We're so lucky he's so funny. Wow, that was fun! Somebody Feed Phil's Phil Rosenthal started at the top, of his life that is... taking us from being 5 yrs old and only wanting to make people laugh, hating Hebrew school, getting the leads in his High School and college plays, surely destined to be a star, but... working odd jobs, co-writing and co-creating a smash stage show (which ran for decades), but screwed Phil royally... heading to Hollywood to be a star... not so much. To hear Phil tell there've been lots of failures, and disappointments, downtime... and yet... there was Coach which led to Everybody Loves Raymond, which Phil got on his terms through his moxie, then to Russia and Exporting Raymond which put him at last in front of the camera... then some failed pilots, culminating in his life's dream... all the things he loves... travel, family, food, and the funny. Season 3 of Somebody Feeds Phil debuts on Netflix this Friday, May 29th. If you missed seasons 1 and 2, no matter. You can watch these in any order, and I trust, seeing one, you'll want to savor them all (BYOF). Everybody loves Phil. With damn good reason. On this week’s On Story we’ll hear from Everybody Loves Raymond Executive Producer and Somebody Feed Phil creator and host Phil Rosenthal on the common thread between travel shows and sitcoms, the unifying power of food and the late great Anthony Bourdain. And later, Rosenthal discusses his comedy documentary, Exporting Raymond.  In 1995 Phil Rosenthal created the hit CBS comedy Everybody Loves Raymond. He served as Showrunner and Executive Producer for all nine years of the series run which earned more than 70 Emmy nominations. Rosenthal’s new Netflix series Somebody Feed Phil follows Rosenthal as he travels the globe taking in the local cuisine and culture. I sat down with Phil to discuss food, family, and the new season of Somebody Feed Phil, which is out July 6th on Netflix. Clips of Somebody Feed Phil courtesy of Netflix, Inc. Following the creation of the hit CBS comedy Everybody Loves Raymond, Rosenthal is asked to adapt the series for Russian TV. He chronicles this journey through the comedy documentary, Exporting Raymond. The film follows Phil as he travels to Moscow to recreate the show for Russian audiences as Everybody Loves Kostya. Throughout the film, Rosenthal faces a series of challenges. Eventually, Rosenthal and the Russian creators come to an understanding despite the obvious culture and language barriers. The documentary premiered at the 17th annual Austin Film Festival in 2010. Rosenthal spoke with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang writer/director Shane Black at the Historic Paramount Theatre during the 17th annual Austin Film Festival in 2010. Phil Rosenthal is one of Todd’s favorite people within the TV industry to talk to, because he loves making television — whether he’s writing it or starring in it. He's probably best known for creating the Emmy-winning series Everybody Loves Raymond, starring Ray Romano. The show ran for nine seasons, winning the Emmy for Best Comedy Series twice, and it has gone on to a healthy life in reruns. Rosenthal spent several years after Raymond left the air creating new sitcom pilots, translating Raymond for the Russian audience (which he covered in the very funny documentary Exporting Raymond), and trying to get his dream project off the ground. Now, not only is that dream project happening, but it’s in its second season on Netflix. Somebody Feed Phil follows Rosenthal as he travels the world’s great cities, looking for their most delicious dishes, whether it's incredibly spicy soup in Bangkok or an unexpectedly tasty taco (made from “a part of the cow” rarely eaten in America, Rosenthal says) in Mexico City. He joins Todd this week to talk about his show, why not having a poker face is great for making a food show, and which comedies he loves on TV right now. Learn more about your ad choices. Turns out not everybody loves Raymond which creator Phil Rosenthal quickly discovered when he set out to document the turning of the American series into a Russian sitcom in Exporting Raymond. Rosenthal tells host Robin Milling at the 26th annual Santa Barbara Film Festival that the beloved show about an every man and his family got lost in translation. "I have Ray Romano in my head so I'm looking for a guy like that from the (Russian) TV show who should be every man, a guy who likes to be left alone and is not very demonstrative. They didn't cast that guy, but he's the exact opposite of Ray like a serial killer!"
