I interview Marc Scanlan who developed rhabdo after Initial Entry Training with the Florida State Guard. What makes his case intriguing is Marc is also a fitness trainer, highly skilled with kettlebells and he was well hydrated. Despite his superior physical fitness level and frequent hydration breaks (He was wearing a CamelBak hydration pack), he began showing the telltale signs of rhabdomyolysis. This interview highlights that even very athletic people can get rhabdo and dispels myths about this medical condition that everyone needs to know. We begin today's discussion by observing the budding of a national divorce in Western North Carolina. It's become abundantly clear that the feds are not really interested in helping, nor are the people interested in accepting the help. We are headed toward red state self-sufficiency, and this effort will be led by veterans. To that end, we're joined by retired Marine Colonel Mark Thieme, who is now executive director of the new Florida State Guard. He explains the need for the Guard and all of the lifesaving work they have done during natural disasters, as well as missions in North Carolina and at the Texas border. Unmoored from bureaucracy and from any federal control, Thieme is able to recruit talented people with the desire to serve and efficiently utilize their skills for maritime and aviation operations, reconnaissance, and search and rescue to augment the other state agencies. They are light and nimble to focus on the need of the hour. They have gotten so many recruits that they already had to turn away people. The Florida Guard has also been a landing place for veterans who left the service but still want to protect Americans without dealing with woke politics. Are state guards the wave of the future and also the ultimate fulfillment of our Founders' vision of state-based militias? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It is incontrovertibly clear that we have a broken social compact. Today, I juxtapose what our federal government is doing for illegal aliens, Ukraine, and Iranian allies to what it is not doing in Western North Carolina. The seeds for a national divorce are there, as we see conservative Americans and the Florida State Guard step up to help the victims of the hurricane. I make the case for the creation of robust State Guards in red states and sheriff's posses at the county level so that conservatives can channel their patriotism, love, talent, and energy into service they believe in. I also delve into the shocking criminal alien numbers and why those figures don't capture the full universe of criminality. Unfortunately, we have weak Republican governors who don't share our values. Why? As I note at the end of the show, a story out of Idaho demonstrates that the root problem of what ails red America lies in weak or subversive church leaders. Learn more about your ad choices. The Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, voiced his plans recently regarding the potential influx of unauthorized immigrants from Haiti. Hinting at a unique solution, DeSantis suggested that these individuals may be relocated by the state of Florida to the predominantly progressive Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. These comments came forward during a conversation with Dana Loesch, a prominent conservative radio speaker. The looming possibility of a sizable wave of illegal immigrants from Haiti reaching Florida shores was the main topic of their discussion. Given Haiti's political instability, aggravated by the rise of highly aggressive street gangs, the likelihood of such an scenario is increasing. Stressing the pressing need to anticipate and deflect any incursion of unauthorized immigrants, Governor DeSantis pointed out Florida's geographical challenges. Unlike Texas, which shares a border with Mexico, Florida, enveloped by waters, does not have the ability to send back unauthorized immigrants before they land on its shores. As part of a greater plan to tackle this issue, DeSantis introduced the potential implementation of a transport program. This program would handle those Haitian individuals reaching Florida shores, particularly the Florida Keys, and their subsequent relocation. 'It's likely Martha's Vineyard will be their next stop,' the Governor hinted. Against the backdrop of fears concerning a substantial surge of unlawful entry attempts by Haitians, DeSantis affirmed the dedication of Florida. He stated that they had been committing significant resources to thwart the arrival of unauthorized vessels from countries including Haiti. In light of the grave circumstances in Haiti, DeSantis gave specific orders to several state government divisions. He summoned the Division of Emergency Management, the Florida State Guard, and state law enforcement agencies to take action. DeSantis's directive resulted in the deployment of more than 250 additional officers, soldiers, along with over a dozen aerial and maritime vehicles to Florida's southern coastline. The mission being to staunchly safeguard the state from any potential unauthorized entry attempts. DeSantis expressed his state's committed efforts to boost the U.S. Coast Guard's interdiction actions, admitting its limitations in resources. His message was clear: the continued arrival of illegal immigrants to Florida cannot be entertained. The backdrop against all these, the horrendous conditions in Haiti, have deteriorated further in recent times. Notably, illicit takeover attempts over the Port-au-Prince jail have unleashed thousands of criminals back onto the already distressed streets of Haiti. The small yet resilient country of Haiti has been subjected to continuing turmoil. Major earthquakes have caused widespread devastation while unforeseen political assassinations have further destabilized the stressed nation. Amidst these tribulations, the street gangs have intensified their devastating activities. Attacks on Haiti's principal international airport and local police stations have become growing concerns. Instances of looting in multiple ports and buildings have been reported, showcasing a further slide into chaos. The blockage of humanitarian aid shipments by these gangs has added another layer to the country's ongoing woes. All these incidents narrate the mortifying fate of a country in the throes of a crisis. It shines a light on why DeSantis is anticipating a surge of unauthorized entries from Haiti. Florida, facing its unique geographical and political challenges, is in a precarious position. However, Governor DeSantis appears to chart a proactive route for his state. The unveiling of plans to supplement the U.S. Coast Guard's efforts and a potential transport program might provoke broader discussions on immigration policy and state sovereignty. Ultimately, these strategies serve to emphasize a crucial point — that the prioritization of state security need not undermine compassion, but can, instead, lead the way in fostering constructive discourse on the way forward. With a careful strategy in mind, Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis, hailing from the GOP, has greenlit the mobilization of the state guard to pre-emptively secure Florida against a potential swell of unauthorized Haitian immigrants. Haiti is currently navigating through a turbulent phase replete with disorder as violent factions have taken over the reins of the national capital, fragmenting the infrastructure and putting a strain on its economic steadiness. Reflecting on the heightened insecurity stemming from Haiti, DeSantis has decided to fortify Florida's coastline with a robust addition of 250 Florida State Guard personnel and law enforcement officers, as was announced on a recent Wednesday. Governor DeSantis voiced his concerns over Florida's increasing misgivings about unauthorised vessels originating from nations like Haiti. In a Wednesday proclamation, he stated, 'As the governor, I recognize the severity of the situation in Haiti, hence in response, I have sanctioned the deployment of over 250 officers and soldiers along with an array of more than ten aircraft and sea vessels to Florida's southern coastline to shield our citizens'. In DeSantis' perspective, there's no state that's worked harder to amplify U.S. Coast Guard's meddling efforts. He sternly warned against the breach of Florida's borders by unlawful immigrants. Owing to geographical factors, the challenge of impending Haitian immigration has been an uphill battle for Florida.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On tonight's program: Oral arguments get underway in the Florida Supreme Court regarding a proposed constitutional amendment's language guaranteeing the right to an abortion; Two Democrats in the Florida Legislature are trying to convince their mostly Republican colleagues the right to contraception needs to be enshrined in Florida law; One measure being debated at the Capitol makes it a crime to harass poll workers; And Governor DeSantis is hoping the Florida Senate will confirm his choice to head up the Florida State Guard.
Florida's Republican leader, Governor Ron DeSantis, has recently declared his decision to dispatch elements of both the Florida National Guard and the Florida State Guard towards Texas. This initiative comes as a response to assist Texas Governor Greg Abbott in managing the elevated flow of undocumented immigrants, which has been a noticeable trend during President Biden's regime. The surge of undocumented arrivals into Texas hit a historical milestone last month, as federal agents reported encounters with 302,034 individuals, surpassing all previous records. Compared to the former record of 269,735 encounters in September 2023, also under Biden's tenure, this increase marks substantial growth in the numbers. Further amplifying concerns, at least 19 of those apprehended were present on the terrorist watchlist. This detail indeed raises eyebrows and intensifies the importance of controlling borders and ensuring their security. Governor DeSantis spoke on the issue, reaffirming states' rights to uphold their territorial integrity. He expressed satisfaction over Florida's increased backing for Texas in their efforts to manage the border situation. His conviction views safe borders as an essential characteristic of a sovereign nation. DeSantis has planned to send up to a battalion of National Guard members, roughly totaling 1,000 soldiers, to offer support based on Texas' needs. This commitment from Florida's gubernatorial office signals substantial backing for Texas in its border management operations. This deployment isn't the first time Florida has committed military resources to assist Texas; similar helps have been provided since 2021. The sustained assistance reflects Florida's dedication to aiding fellow states in moments of increased pressure and challenges. Florida State Guard Director Mark Thieme affirmed the readiness of their forces to work closely with Texas in a show of unity against this pressing concern. They are ready to assist their comrades in Texas who are currently facing the sharp increase in undocumented immigration. Thieme expressed the Florida State Guard's capabilities to swiftly respond to emergencies, maintain public safety, and offer humanitarian support as and where needed. Their readiness conveys the extent to which Florida is committed to tackling the surge and augmenting border security. The condition of the U.S. southern border has significantly declined in recent times under the Biden administration. The number of undocumented immigrants in December nearly matches the total count apprehended throughout the fiscal year of 2017, revealing dramatic shifts. A total of 303,916 individuals were arrested by the federal officials during the fiscal year 2017 at the U.S. southern border. Given the parallel figures, the challenge of migration poses a pressing national concern deserving attention and resolution. Recent monthly encounter rates at the southern border are comparable, if not greater, than the populations of several major American cities. This comparison underscores the gargantuan task of managing such immigration flows and highlights the urgency of finding suitable measures. U.S. cities like Orlando, Newark, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Spokane, Irving, and Lubbock all have populations similar to or lower than the recorded monthly encounters of undocumented immigrants. Such comparisons provide a relatable scale to comprehend the magnitude of the issue. This ongoing situation increases the need for robust plans and policies. The high influx of undocumented immigrants showcases the urgency to reassess and strengthen border security, where individual states like Florida and Texas are taking the lead. The proactive and unified response from the states showcases their commitment to safeguarding the country's sovereignty. Their actions serve as a call to the entire nation, reminding all states of the crucial role they play in maintaining the nation's security and stability. The vigilant action taken by states such as Florida and Texas towards this issue is commendable. Whether it is a task of keen vigil to maintain public safety or prompt humanitarian steps, the resources and responsibilities of the states are being efficiently manned to tackle this significant border issue. It's been a few weeks, but we're back. We talk about some of what we've been up to over the last month, then jump into two news items. First up is an opinion piece by NYTimes contributor David Brooks that suggests professionals (or the professional class) are condescending and dismissive of the working class, which has led them to feel disenfranchised and choose as their representative Donald Trump, who they think sticks it to the professional class (or elites). We discuss this op-ed, tackle the issue of elites again, and then wonder why these individuals chose a billionaire, elite-educated, New Yorker as their champion. The second story we discuss is the renewal of the Florida State Guard by Ron DeSantis, which has been a disaster. The training was a mess, people complained, and the mission is unclear. Tom accurately describes this as both (a) a nothing burger and (b) a disturbing sign that DeSantis wants his own personal guard. We then wrap up with a brief discussion of the killing of a man in Provo by the FBI who had made repeated death threats against Biden and other politicians.

Ralph and our resident constitutional scholar, Bruce Fein, discuss how they compiled letters they sent to various government officials and representatives that have gone unanswered into a book titled “The Incommunicados” and how this unresponsiveness violates our First Amendment right to petition our government for redress of grievances. Then Washington Post opinion columnist, Helaine Olen, highlights the corporate equivalent, how hard it is to reach a human being for customer service and how all of this plays into the free-floating anger and general unrest of an American population that feels unheard.Bruce Fein is a Constitutional scholar and an expert on international law. Mr. Fein was Associate Deputy Attorney General under Ronald Reagan and he is the author of Constitutional Peril: The Life and Death Struggle for Our Constitution and Democracy, and American Empire: Before the Fall.Today, I couldn't have gotten through to members of the Senate or House on the auto safety issue. We couldn't have gotten through for them to even consider (much less pass) the auto safety legislation that they did in 1966. Because I could get on the line and even if I couldn't get a member, I could call and get the chief of staff or get the legislative director in order to have access. I could go down to Capitol Hill and get the hearings, get the media attention, and get the law to save millions of lives. So, this is serious. It isn't just a matter of literary courtesy here.Ralph NaderWhat we have in the right to petition for the redress of grievances is an effort to prevent a repeat of the deaf ear that King George was turning to the grievances of the colonists. And the right to petition implies a corollary obligation to respond… That's the heart of what democratic discourse is about. Part of what holding government officials accountable is about— requiring them to explain their decisions. They don't have to agree with us, but they can't just ignore us and treat us as though we're not human beings.Bruce FeinHelaine Olen is an expert on money and society, and an award-winning columnist for the Washington Post. She is co-author of The Index Card: Why Personal Finance Doesn't Have to Be Complicated and the author of Pound Foolish: Exposing the Dark Side of the Personal Finance Industry. This is part of why Americans are so angry. Is our lives as consumers. In the United States we often confuse our consumer lives with being a citizen. We think if the phone line isn't working if the airline isn't working, if we can't get through to the doctor's office, there's something wrong with the state of the country. And every time one of these interactions deteriorates, there's this sense of ‘things don't work,' which I think is pervasive in the United States… and I think it translates into this free-floating anger that then gets turned around and leveled at random people at the government, fill in the blank.”Helaine OlenThere's this dominant narrative out there right now that American consumers are becoming greedy and grasping and they're abusing the help— which happens, I don't want to say every consumer is a perfect citizen by a long shot— but I think it is partly a response to the fact that people are often treated very very badly. And there's really no one to complain to that will actually do anything about this.Helaine OlenIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantis1. The Screen Actors Guild, SAG-AFTRA, has joined the Writers Guild in going on strike following the collapse of negotiations with the studios. This new strike covers 160,000 actors and coming as it does amid the writers strike, will effectively shut down Hollywood production for the foreseeable future. In a widely shared video, SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher decried the studios for "plead[ing] poverty…[while] giving hundreds of millions of dollars to their CEOs."2. The Intercept reports that AOC has authored an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act requiring “the CIA, Pentagon, and State Department to declassify information related to the U.S. government's role in the Chilean coup that brought dictator Augusto Pinochet to power.” Much of what the public knows about the Chilean coup came out through the legendary Church Committee hearings, and it is encouraging that someone in Congress is interested in taking up that mantle.3. In Florida, a joint investigation by the Tampa Bay Times and Miami Herald uncovered the disturbing reality underlying Governor DeSantis' revamped Florida State Guard. While recruits were initially told they would be trained for a nonmilitary mission – to “help Floridians in times of need or disaster” – they were instead taught how to “rappel with ropes, navigate through the woods and respond to incidents under military command.” Major General John D. Haas, charged with overseeing the program, is quoted saying the State Guard is a “military organization” that will be used not just for emergencies but for “aiding law enforcement with riots and illegal immigration.”4. Longtime civil rights leader and two-time presidential candidate Reverend Jesse Jackson has announced that he is retiring from his role as president of the Rainbow-PUSH Coalition, per The Hill. He had led the group for over 50 years, even after he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2017. President Biden said of Jackson, “I've seen him as history will remember him: a man of God and of the people; determined, strategic, and unafraid of the work to redeem the soul of our nation.”5. Uruguay, the small South American nation sandwiched between Argentina and Brazil, is experiencing its worst drought in 74 years. The situation has become so dire that authorities are mixing salt water into the public drinking water. Now, the Guardian reports that Uruguayans are protesting a planned Google data center that would consume two million gallons of water per day. In response to this crisis, a new group has cropped up – the Commission to Defend Water and Life, backed by the country's trade unions – and their slogan has become ubiquitous: “This is not drought, it's pillage.”6. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, chair of the Progressive Caucus, got herself into trouble this week by calling Israel a “racist state,” in a speech to the progressive summit Netroots Nation, per CNN. While clumsily worded, Jayapal's statement actually vastly understates the issue. According to mainstream groups like Amnesty International, Israel is in fact an “apartheid” state.7. More on Israel, the New York Times reports that “At least 180 senior fighter pilots, elite commandos and cyber-intelligence specialists in the Israeli military reserve have informed their commanders that they will no longer report for volunteer duty if the government proceeds with a plan to limit judicial influence by the end of the month.” While media coverage of the protests against this judicial overhaul has slowed, the protests themselves are very much ongoing and these resignations prove there is significant discontent among secular Israelis. It remains to be seen whether the opposition by mainstream Israeli society to authoritarian creep will substantively address any of the underlying issues, such as the occupation of Palestine.8. In an update to the Guatemala story from last week, Al Jazeera reports that in a statement, “the public prosecutor's office denied accusations that its actions were aimed at derailing the [anti-corruption] Seed Movement's prospects as it competes in the final round of voting.” This prosecutor, Rafael Curruchiche, has “previously targeted anti-corruption campaigners and has been placed on the US Department of State's Engel List for ‘corrupt and undemocratic actors'.” The decision to ban the party has already been reversed by Guatemala's Constitutional Court, the highest court in that country. The party's leader, Bernardo Arevalo, has stated “We are in the electoral race, we are moving forward and we will not be stopped by this corrupt group.”9. The Houston Chronicle reports that “Officers working for [Texas Governor Greg] Abbott's border security initiative have been ordered to push children into the Rio Grande, and have been told not to give water to migrants” These abuses were revealed in an email from a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper who described the actions as “inhumane.”10. Finally, Universal Studios appears to have unlawfully trimmed trees on the public sidewalk outside of their building in Los Angeles, a transparent attempt to discourage picketers by denying them shade during the ongoing heatwave. City Controller Kenneth Mejia has announced that his office is launching an investigation. Ironically, this shows Hollywood executives are perfectly capable of cuts at the top.
