Throughout its history, groups of armed citizens will threaten to use, or actually use, force to get their point across, either to effect change or to prevent that from happening. But in the 1990s, something changed, and groups formed around new ideologies that sometimes had little to do with objective reality. The Militia Movement was mainly rural, white, far-right Christians who'd been nurtured on conspiracy theories and half truths which they had chosen to believe because these made some sort of emotional sense to them, and because they had an unerring sense that they were right and everyone else was wrong. In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Amy Cooter discuss the complexities and variations within militia groups in the United States, citing examples of constitutional militias, millenarian militias, and border militias noting their varying beliefs and tendencies. Dr. Cooter also highlights how the role of nostalgia and protecting the Second Amendment rights are integral in militias' self-perception. They discuss the difficulty in tracking militia activity, the racial undertones in these militia groups, as well as the legality and legal loopholes that many of these groups fall within.     Key Takeaways: Not all militias are the same. They do not have the same goals, structure, meetings,  life experiences, or beliefs. Border militias tend to be more concerned about migration, whereas others, who live away from the Southern border of the US, are less concerned about immigration. The Second Amendment and nostalgia are two major things that tie militia groups together with a point of commonality. It's become abundantly clear that the feds are not really interested in helping, nor are the people interested in accepting the help. We are headed toward red state self-sufficiency, and this effort will be led by veterans. To that end, we're joined by retired Marine Colonel Mark Thieme, who is now executive director of the new Florida State Guard. He explains the need for the Guard and all of the lifesaving work they have done during natural disasters, as well as missions in North Carolina and at the Texas border. Unmoored from bureaucracy and from any federal control, Thieme is able to recruit talented people with the desire to serve and efficiently utilize their skills for maritime and aviation operations, reconnaissance, and search and rescue to augment the other state agencies. They are light and nimble to focus on the need of the hour. They have gotten so many recruits that they already had to turn away people. The Florida Guard has also been a landing place for veterans who left the service but still want to protect Americans without dealing with woke politics.
