On tonight's program: The Florida Legislature is moving to make it a lot tougher for citizens to put proposed changes to the state constitution on the ballot. Even though opponents say such proposals are often very popular; Lawmakers struggle to craft a plan that saves the state's condominium owners in the midst of a multi-faceted crisis; It appears things haven't been quite as bad for Florida property insurers as first thought; Online scammers consider Florida's older residents a prime target. But a bill working its way through the state senate could nab more of the bad actors; It seems there's a good reason the Florida National Guard has been doing double-duty as corrections officers during the past few years; Governor DeSantis has turned thumbs down on a new management plan for a critical marine sanctuary, even though many experts say it's the best they could come up with; And despite all the focus on private space firms like Elon Musk's, NASA is still the prime driver of America's space program.

DeSantis Vows to Send Haitian Migrants to Martha's Vinyards

The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, is responding to the current crisis in Haiti with a commitment to protect his state from unauthorized migration. He expressed these views during a recent conversation with Dana Loesch from TheFirst TV. DeSantis, previously speculated as a 2024 Republican presidential hopeful, revealed his strategies to manage the situation. Given the deteriorating situation in Haiti and the significant number of residents fleeing the country, it is expected that Florida may experience a considerable influx of immigrants. In light of this, Governor DeSantis is mobilizing 250 members of the Florida National Guard, in combination with state troopers. Their mission will be to secure the Florida coastline and act as a first line of defense against illegal migrant entries. The resignation of Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has plunged Haiti into a state of uncertainty, escalating the crisis. With few options available to manage the growing migrant presence in his state, DeSantis is considering alternative actions that respect human dignity while maintaining the rule of law. DeSantis highlighted the limitations faced by Florida when dealing with this crisis. He said, 'When Florida faces a situation like this, if we have residents from another nation on our soil, and we intend to repatriate them to their homeland, we need authorization. It's not as straightforward as it might appear.'  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Florida Governor DeSantis Dedicates Troops to Aid Texas in Border Crisis

Real News Now Podcast

Florida's Republican leader, Governor Ron DeSantis, has recently declared his decision to dispatch elements of both the Florida National Guard and the Florida State Guard towards Texas. This initiative comes as a response to assist Texas Governor Greg Abbott in managing the elevated flow of undocumented immigrants, which has been a noticeable trend during President Biden's regime. The surge of undocumented arrivals into Texas hit a historical milestone last month, as federal agents reported encounters with 302,034 individuals, surpassing all previous records. Compared to the former record of 269,735 encounters in September 2023, also under Biden's tenure, this increase marks substantial growth in the numbers. Further amplifying concerns, at least 19 of those apprehended were present on the terrorist watchlist. This detail indeed raises eyebrows and intensifies the importance of controlling borders and ensuring their security. Governor DeSantis spoke on the issue, reaffirming states' rights to uphold their territorial integrity. He expressed satisfaction over Florida's increased backing for Texas in their efforts to manage the border situation. His conviction views safe borders as an essential characteristic of a sovereign nation. DeSantis has planned to send up to a battalion of National Guard members, roughly totaling 1,000 soldiers, to offer support based on Texas' needs. This commitment from Florida's gubernatorial office signals substantial backing for Texas in its border management operations. This deployment isn't the first time Florida has committed military resources to assist Texas; similar helps have been provided since 2021. The sustained assistance reflects Florida's dedication to aiding fellow states in moments of increased pressure and challenges. Florida State Guard Director Mark Thieme affirmed the readiness of their forces to work closely with Texas in a show of unity against this pressing concern. They are ready to assist their comrades in Texas who are currently facing the sharp increase in undocumented immigration. Thieme expressed the Florida State Guard's capabilities to swiftly respond to emergencies, maintain public safety, and offer humanitarian support as and where needed. Their readiness conveys the extent to which Florida is committed to tackling the surge and augmenting border security. The condition of the U.S. southern border has significantly declined in recent times under the Biden administration. The number of undocumented immigrants in December nearly matches the total count apprehended throughout the fiscal year of 2017, revealing dramatic shifts. A total of 303,916 individuals were arrested by the federal officials during the fiscal year 2017 at the U.S. southern border. Given the parallel figures, the challenge of migration poses a pressing national concern deserving attention and resolution. Recent monthly encounter rates at the southern border are comparable, if not greater, than the populations of several major American cities. This comparison underscores the gargantuan task of managing such immigration flows and highlights the urgency of finding suitable measures. U.S. cities like Orlando, Newark, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Spokane, Irving, and Lubbock all have populations similar to or lower than the recorded monthly encounters of undocumented immigrants. Such comparisons provide a relatable scale to comprehend the magnitude of the issue. This ongoing situation increases the need for robust plans and policies. The high influx of undocumented immigrants showcases the urgency to reassess and strengthen border security, where individual states like Florida and Texas are taking the lead. The proactive and unified response from the states showcases their commitment to safeguarding the country's sovereignty. Their actions serve as a call to the entire nation, reminding all states of the crucial role they play in maintaining the nation's security and stability. The vigilant action taken by states such as Florida and Texas towards this issue is commendable. Whether it is a task of keen vigil to maintain public safety or prompt humanitarian steps, the resources and responsibilities of the states are being efficiently manned to tackle this significant border issue. Ron DeSantis expanded a state of emergency to include more counties as the southern U.S. braces for Hurricane Idalia to make landfall Wednesday. While 33 of Florida's 67 counties were under the previous executive order, DeSantis' updated order issued Monday now includes 46 counties. The National Weather Service said Tuesday that Idalia is "expected to rapidly intensify into an extremely dangerous major hurricane" before making landfall. DeSantis said Monday that Idalia is expected to develop into at least a category 3 hurricane by the time it makes landfall, according to CBS News. The National Weather Service states that with a category 3 hurricane, "devastating damage will occur," and things such as utilities, trees and well-built homes may incur major damages. In preparation for Idalia's landfall, DeSantis fully activated the Florida National Guard, and 5,500 are expected to be mobilized to respond to the storm. Additionally, dozens of public schools have closed down and the state government is taking additional steps to ensure people have access to food. Biden posted Monday on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that he spoke with DeSantis "to inform him that we've approved the Emergency Declaration for Florida as they prepare for Hurricane Idalia," and he said, "Florida has my full support as they prepare for Idalia and its aftermath." https://www.theblaze.com/news/kyle-rittenhouse-sued-by-estate-of-the-child-molester-he-blew-away-in-self-defense Kyle Rittenhouse sued by estate of the convicted child molester he blew away in self-defense Kyle Rittenhouse shot three attackers who mobbed him during a leftist riot in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Aug. 25, 2020. Two of the three are no more. He was cleared of all charges in 2021. Despite being found not guilty by a jury of his peers, Rittenhouse has since had to fight various efforts to paint him as a villain and to punish him for defending himself. The most recent attempt comes in the form of a civil lawsuit filed by the convicted child molester Joseph Rosenbaum's estate Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. Texas Scorecard reported that the suit names Rittenhouse as a defendant along with local sheriff's departments, Kenosha officials, the City of Kenosha, the City of West Allis, and various counties, demanding "compensatory and punitive damages" for the "wrongful death" of Rosenbaum. The Washington Post noted that Rosenbaum spent most of his adult life in prison after preying upon five preteen boys. It appears his life on the outside was marked by rage and rootlessness. For instance, one month prior to his demise, Rosenbaum's fiancée, Kariann Swart, pressed charges against him for domestic abuse. Just hours before catching four bullets, the homeless and bipolar 36-year-old had been released from a hospital following a suicide attempt, reported NPR. Fresh out of the hospital, Rosenbaum joined in the destructive riots that kicked off in response to the non-fatal police shooting of Jacob Blake, whom state prosecutors indicated had been wanted on a felony warrant and was armed with a knife. Rittenhouse's lawyers claimed during his murder trial that Rosenbaum attempted to "engage" the youth, at which point Rittenhouse attempted to flee. Rosenbaum gave chase, threw a sack of belongings at him, then, according to witness testimony, attempted to disarm the then-17-year-old by force. Footage of the incident shows that it was only when the 17-year-old appeared cornered in a car lot did he open fire. In addition to claiming Rosenbaum was a peaceful protester who "was not a danger to himself or others," the Rosenbaum estate cast Rittenhouse in the lawsuit as a menace who "fired his assault rifle indiscriminately multiple times," despite the 17-year-old's documented restraint and sure aim. While Rosenbaum can be seen on film chasing down the boy, the suit alleges that "there was no justification for Defendant Rittenhouse to point his weapon at Joseph Rosenbaum." https://www.foxnews.com/media/federal-judge-dismisses-university-wyoming-students-lawsuit-trans-sorority-member Federal judge dismisses University of Wyoming students' lawsuit against trans sorority member University of Wyoming sorority members’ lawsuit for the inclusion of a transgender student in their organization was dismissed by a federal judge on Friday. In March, several current and former members of the University of Wyoming’s Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority sued the national sorority to revoke the membership allowing what they described as "peeping" transgender student Artemis Langford. Despite the women’s descriptions of Langford’s alleged actions, the judge ruled that the school did not violate any policies by allowing the student to join. "The University of Wyoming chapter voted to admit - and, more broadly, a sorority of hundreds of thousands approved - Langford. With its inquiry beginning and ending there, the Court will not define ‘woman’ today. The delegate of a private, voluntary organization interpreted ‘woman’, otherwise undefined in the nonprofit's bylaws, expansively; this Judge may not invade Kappa Kappa Gamma's freedom of expressive association and inject the circumscribed definition Plaintiffs urge," the judge said. The ruling continued, "Holding that Plaintiffs fail to plausibly allege their derivative, breach of contract, tortious interference, and direct claims, the Court dismisses, without prejudice, Plaintiffs' causes of action." The lawsuit brought by seven members of Kappa Kappa Gamma claimed that Langford violated sorority policies by joining a sorority despite not being a woman or making efforts to appear female. https://dailycaller.com/2023/08/29/biden-ukraine-funding-deal/ Biden Seeks Long-Term Military Aid to Ukraine to Prevent Next President From Scaling Back Funding The Biden administration is seeking to hammer out a long-term Ukraine aid agreement with European allies in hopes of both preventing Russia from gaining an edge on the battlefield and hamstringing a future president’s ability to scale back U.S. commitments, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. The scheme emerged during sideline talks among Group of Seven leaders at a NATO summit in July, and so far involves negotiations between the U.S. and Ukraine, and between the United Kingdom (U.K.) and Ukraine, according to the WSJ. It’s an attempt, in part, to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin he can simply wait until a new American administration, as several top GOP political contenders have expressed intention to reduce or eliminate U.S. aid that makes up the brunt of Western support. Building up Kyiv’s defense forces in the long term can theoretically deter Russia from invading again, officials calculated, according to the WSJ. Former President Donald Trump has maintained a lead in Republican primary candidate polling and could face a second showdown with President Joe Biden in the 2024 election. Trump has claimed he could solve the war “within 24 hours.” At the first Republican primary debate Wednesday, several candidates indicated they would support drawing down aid for Ukraine. Eighteen countries not belonging to the G-7 wealthy democracies, including the Netherlands and Sweden, have also agreed to the long-term security assistance pledge for Ukraine, according to the WSJ. European capitals want to cement support and restrict ways countries could renege on pledges, fearing what might happen during a second Trump administration, according to the WSJ. At present, Western European nations lack the industrial and financial capacity to match the billions in annual military aid provided by the U.S. Since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the U.S. has devoted more than $40 billion worth of weapons and equipment, as well as training and investment into U.S. weapons companies, for the purpose of aiding Ukraine’s resistance. The aid has exposed weaknesses in American military readiness and industrial base capacity, provoking criticism that the U.S. should be using those funds to shore up defenses with an eye toward China as the war in Ukraine drags on with no end in sight. However, the practical workings of the agreement pose significant hurdles to the Biden administration’s goals, the WSJ reported, citing officials. A sitting president has limited ability to bind his successor to any initiative or policy.

In a booming economy, running a successful law practice can feel effortless. The engine chugs along--often with only minor supervision. But when the economy changes and inflation comes into play, the practice model must also evolve. This episode of Great Practice, Great Life explores how to maintain a well-oiled machine when attorneys and practice employees alike are struggling to overcome increasing expenses and stagnant wages amidst inflation. Glenn Finch is a longtime friend of Steve's and a partner at Atticus. Married for 20 years with four children and five grandchildren, Glenn is also a Colonel in the Florida National Guard, has a black belt in martial arts, is a master scuba diver, and served for 12 years as a Senior Pastor for three multi-staffed churches in Florida. From their perspectives as experienced Practice Advisors, Steve and Glenn explore different and unique ways to continue marketing a law practice when clients tighten their budgets in the face of increasing necessary expenses. In this episode, you will hear: Why Glenn is passionate about creating resilient practices while facing inflation. Why competing with increasing wages is a zero-sum game. How satisfaction helps retain employees. What “sharpening the client mix” means and why it's a key strategy. I'm Candice, 41 year wife, Mom and working part time outside of the home. We are an Air Force family nearing military retirement with 3 kids. Our eldest son is 23 currently serving in the Florida National Guard, a 16 year old son and our youngest daughter is 9.I started my IF journey the summer of 2018 when we were stationed in Illinois. I originally started the process of getting weight loss surgery at the beginning of that year. Before I hit my “that's it” wall…. I really had accepted that I would just be overweight the rest of my life and ignored it.I had not struggled with my weight or any body image issues when I was younger/school age. I was probably 125/ 130lbs in High School. I don't even think we had a scale. Maybe I tried the subway diet to drop a few lbs at some point lol. It was never something I really worried about. I wasn't super athletic but I did play sports. My husband and I had our son earlier than we would've planned. So I was a young Mom at 18. After the birth of my first son I gained allot of weight rather quickly (like 80lbs). It never even crossed my mind during pregnancy that weight would even be an issue. My Mom had always been in amazing shape and the women in my family were small for the most part. Same on my Dad's side. I personally believe it had allot to do with my hormones. I had really never had any breakout/acne before but my skin went crazy with painful cystic acne at that time too. It definitely had a negative emotional effect on me. I ended up doing a round of medication/acutane and it cleared up my skin issues for the most part. My weight continued to start to climb from there over the years. Independent Historian and Storyteller James Bullock portrays Black Seminole sense bearer Abraham at the capture site of Osceola under a white flag of truce. (Courtesy images)   Living historians portray many personas, some historical, some not. The Seminole Wars podcast has invited a number of such reenactors onto this program. Their main task is interpretation without judgement as well as to "fill in the blanks" the history books don't cover. For instance, the Black Seminole translator Abraham enjoys a somewhat checkered reputation. Was he double-dealing the Seminoles in the agreements he brokered with the U.S. Army? What might have been his motivations for acting as he did? Should we analyze his life and reputation based on these key decision points? Do we moderns judge him by today's standards versus those of Abraham's time? To examine this, we are honored to chat with the distinguished independent historian James Bullock. Bullock is an A.S.C.A.P writer and publisher, playwright, and tour guide.  At public events, he has portrayed Abraham, one of many personas the professional actor takes on. James Bullock is the recipient of the 2006 Interpretive Guide Award from the Castillo de San Marcos, U.S. Park Service.  He is also the author of the play Freedom Road.  He has been a speaker for the U.S. Army Reserve and Florida National Guard and has led tours and presentations at Fort Mose for various Florida schools and St. Louis Urban League.  Bullock is also a re-enactor in the Flight to Freedom Program, National Park Service.  He has acted in community theatre in various plays including Majigeen, To Kill a Mockingbird, Omnium Gatherium, Of Mice and Men, and A Raisin in the Sun. And today he discusses Abraham in historical context.     1880s illustration of Abraham (Above). Growing up in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Steve knew he wanted to join the Army after he graduated from high school. “I wanted to jump out of airplanes, so I was in the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg.” he says. After serving 4 years in the Army and 2 in the Florida National Guard, he decided to move on. “I realized the military was great, but financially, it just wasn't what I was looking for in life.” In 1999, he and some buddies from the 82nd Airborne headed down to Boca Raton to attend Florida Atlantic University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in sociology. After stints in the mortgage industry and B2B sales, he got into the job fair industry, traveling across the Southeast and Southwest to conduct events. Within a few years, though, Edwards noticed a slowdown in business. “Everybody was working, they couldn't come to job fairs and turnout was low.” He recalls, or they were opting to apply for jobs online instead. “It was affecting my pocketbook”. Looking for a better way to connect employers to job candidates, Edwards seized on the concept of virtual job fairs. “People don't have to travel,” I said, “This is going to be the future,” he recalls. Steve bootstrapped Premier Virtual with personal savings to launch the business. Once he got the business off the ground he knew he had an idea he could monetize. He was in several mentoring programs along the way as he knew he had a great idea and could sell it but didn't know everything. He was involved with the VMT, FAU Tech Runway and the FAU Veterans Entrepreneurship Program which is sponsored by Veterans Florida. At the end of the program they conduct a pitch competition for the Entrepreneurs and their business ideas and the winner from each school goes on the represent their school at the State competition. Steve represented FAU and then won the Statewide competition as well. This program, and the early pitch competitions he won, although not significant amounts, were still welcomed since he was self-funding the business. In 2019, his startup began building a software platform for virtual job fairs. It launched last March, just as COVID-19 arrived – a bit of serendipity that catapulted Premier Virtual to almost instant success. “We went from nobody knowing who we were to being ranked as one of the top virtual platforms out there,” says Steve. During its first 10 months, the Premier Virtual platform has powered over 2,500 virtual hiring events which has helped more than 25,000 companies connect with over 250,000 job seekers. The company has grown from 3 employees to more than 20 and earned prestigious awards including 2021 Best Companies to Work for in Florida. Approximately 200 workforce development boards across the country, including CareerSource Florida, which oversees 24 regional partners statewide, have chosen their platform for virtual hiring events. Premier Virtual also has licensing agreements with The Air Force, Army, and several National Guard units. Steve says individual companies, colleges, and other organizations are quickly coming on board and that they would have never participated in job fairs if it weren't for virtual, and he's bullish on the company's future. “Covid-19 got our name out there, but now people have embraced the technology and how much more efficient it is. We've just begun to scratch the surface of what virtual hiring events will do for employers and job-seekers alike.” https://premiervirtual.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/stevenedwards23/ https://www.facebook.com/premiervirtual/ https://www.instagram.com/premiervirtual/ https://twitter.com/premiervirtual9 https://youtu.be/WhYvM5n9YMk --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/support

More than 1,000 gas stations in the Southeast reported running out of fuel, primarily because of what analysts say is unwarranted panic-buying among drivers, as the shutdown of a major pipeline by a gang of hackers entered its fifth day Tuesday.Government officials acted swiftly to waive safety and environmental rules to speed the delivery of fuel by truck, ship or rail to motorists and airports, even as they sought to assure the public that there was no cause for alarm. The Colonial Pipeline, the biggest fuel pipeline in the U.S., delivering about 45% of what is consumed on the East Coast, was  hit on Friday with a cyberattack by hackers who lock up computer systems and demand a ransom to release them. The attack raised concerns, once again, about the vulnerability of the nation's critical infrastructure.A large part of the pipeline resumed operations manually late Monday, and Colonial anticipates restarting most of its operations by the end of the week, U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said.Motorists may still feel a crunch because it takes a few days to ramp up operations, but she said there is no reason to hoard gasoline."We know that we have gasoline; we just have to get it to the right places," she said.S&P's Oil Price Information Service put the number of gas stations encountering shortages at more than 1,000."A lot of that is because they're selling three or four times as much gasoline that they normally sell in a given day, because people do panic," said Tom Kloza, an analyst with S&P. "It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy."The pipeline runs from the Texas Gulf Coast to the New York metropolitan area. The states most dependent on the pipeline include Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas, Kloza said.In Virginia, 7.7% of the state's nearly 3,900 gas stations reported running out of fuel Tuesday, according to Gasbuddy.com, which tracks supply. In North Carolina, 8.5% of almost 5,400 stations were out, the company said. There were scattered reports of higher gasoline prices, but prices were rising even before the pipeline incident heading into the busy summer driving season. Nevertheless, Granholm warned gas station owners, "We will have no tolerance for price gouging."To ease brief shortages, the White House is considering temporarily waiving a law that says ships delivering products between U.S. ports must be built and manned by Americans. The Transportation Department also is relaxing some workforce requirements and enlisting railroads to deliver fuel inland. And the Environmental Protection Agency lifted some fuel quality requirements on an emergency basis."We're looking at every option we have across the federal government and all of the federal agencies," Granholm said.In Georgia, Gov. Brian Kemp suspended state taxes on motor fuels through Saturday. Georgia collects a gasoline tax of 28.7 cents per gallon and a diesel tax of 32.2 cents per gallon."It will probably help level the price at the pump off for a little while," Kemp said. However, he urged people not to hoard gasoline, saying he expects the situation to be resolved soon."You don't need to go out and fill up every 5-gallon can you've got," the governor said.Scattered gas stations in metro Atlanta were out of fuel Monday and Tuesday. In Georgia, nearly 6% of about 6,400 stations had run out of fuel, Gasbuddy.com said.In Florida, drivers in some areas faced long lines, and 3% of gas stations had run out.The state's governor, Ron DeSantis, declared a state of emergency Tuesday evening in response to the gasoline. The move activates the Florida National Guard, as needed, and directs state emergency management officials to work with federal and local officials.Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam also declared a state of emergency.Dave Gussak drove from one station to the next in Tallahassee, Florida, in search of gas, seeing a line nearly a mile long at the pumps outside a Costco. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the United States' top infectious disease expert, estimates that concerts and other live venues may be able to safely reopen some time this fall. The virus' spread first began to impact U.S. concerts in early 2020, with a large wave of tours and events being canceled in March. Fauci emphasized that a safe reopening will depend on a swift and effective rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine in order for the U.S. to achieve herd immunity, with 70 percent to 85 percent of the population receiving the vaccine - There's an old saying that it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile. In that same vein, a new study reveals it seems to take more of your brain to argue with someone than it does to agree. A team from Yale University finds there is more “brain real estate” active when two people are disagreeing with each other compared to when they are in sync. The study finds that when two people disagree, their minds activate more cognitive functions to counter the information they're hearing. When two people have the same opinion however, their minds show calm and synchronized activity “similar to a musical duet.” - Have you ever been to someone's home and they have all the shoes by the front door outside of the house? You should do the same at your house. The University of Houston did a study and found that 39 percent of shoes contained bacteria C. diff (Clostridium difficile). C. diff infections can cause multiple health conditions such as bad diarrhea which can also progress to colon inflammation and further serious health problems, especially if it doesn't respond to antibiotic treatment effectively. In another study done by the University of Arizona nine different forms of bacteria were found on the bottom of shoes.  In 1842, Colonel William J. Worth, Commanding in Florida, unilaterally "announced" the end of hostilities between the US Government and the Seminole Indians of Florida. He ordered a reburial of many Soldiers who had perished in the seven-year Second Seminole War. Despite its inconclusive ending, the war had been an important proving ground for the Army and its West Point trained leadership. Although falling short of its goal of total Seminole removal to the Oklahoma Territory, the Army had succeeded in forcibly relocating the majority of the approximately 5,000 Seminole who called Florida home when the war commenced It did this at the staggering cost of $40 million and the deaths of some 1,500 military as well as an unaccounted number of civilian and Seminole deaths. In the Everglades, the Army abandoned efforts against the 500 or so remaining defiant and unconquered Florida Seminole.  On August 15th, then, hundreds of regular Army soldiers marched through St. Augustine. They were escorting seven wagons carrying the remains of the fallen soldiers. These included those of Major Dade's ill-fated column who died in a Seminole ambush on December 28, 1835, which is traditionally marked as the start of the Second Seminole War. The column bore the remains to their final resting place, a garden next to St. Francis Barracks. One finds them in graceful cochina pyramids in the St. Augustine National Cemetery. This subsequent re-interment procession was a solemn remembrance, not a victory march. For more than a decade in today's St. Augustine National Cemetery, The West Point Society of North Florida has organized an annual commemoration of this first event, as a means of keeping faith with those fallen, and to bring attention to all who suffered and sacrificed – soldier, citizen, and Seminole alike – during this long, difficult struggle.   Joining us today is Joseph Naftzinger, a retired Army Colonel and West Point Graduate of the U.S. Military Academy Class of 1960. He discusses the strong ties to the Second Seminole War demonstrated through the outsized role of many U.S. Military Academy graduates -- and how it served as a proving ground for some who went on to command armies in the Mexican and American Civil wars. Familiar names include Joe Johnston, Joseph Hooker, William Sherman, and Braxton Bragg, among others. Worth was a former Commandant of Cadets at West Point, and five of the seven officers who perished in Dade's Command were U.S. Military Academy graduates. Joe also describes the somber 1842 March of the Fallen and how it has been commemorated in recent years with a march led by soldier re-enactors atop two elegant mules pulling a US flag-draped caisson representing the remains brought to St Augustine for interment from temporary burial locations, including the Dade Battlefield. This is an annual living history event held each August 15.
