Allary, 2023). Hannah Murray will start by looking at the bestseller lists on Amazon.co.uk and The Sunday Times, the oldest and most influential book sales chart in the UK, and seeing what new entries there are. Mark Thompson's latest novel 'Age of Consent' is a coming-of-age romance novel that addresses a taboo subject - a teen boy falls in love with his teacher, challenging our assumptions about love and power. Daniel Wright writes stories rooted in real people, raw emotions, and the world he grew up in. His debut novel 'Northern Monkeys' is a gritty story of working class lads in Bradford. At the heart of the story is The Ointment - a football firm built on pride and reputation. But behind the match day classes are deeper struggles; addiction, poverty, broken homes, love, revenge, and the fight to stay above water. Rupa Mahadevan is an acclaimed author of psychological thrillers. Her debut novel won the Joffe Books prize in 2024. She grew up in India, and has lived in Scotland for over 15 years. Her debut novel 'Nine Dolls' is set in a remote manor house in Scotland. When a group of friends reunite to celebrate the Hindu Dolls festival, they're hit by more than just the storm. ...Bremond Berry MacDougal and Lisa Endo Cooper are the co-founders of 'Quite Literally Books', a small publisher that reissues books by nineteenth and twentieth century American women authors that are compelling reads today. Their latest three to be published are 'The Little Dinner' by Christine Terhune Herrick, 'Who Would Have Thought It?' by Maria Ampara Ruiz de Burton, and 'Herland' by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.Louise Treger is the acclimed author of three novels, including 'Madwoman', which was Book of the Month in The Independent and The Sunday Times. In her fiction she focuses on the lives of historical women whose stories have often been overshadowed by the men they were involved with. 'The Paris Muse' ensures that Dora Maar, a talented woman, who gave her life to Picasso, is no longer overlooked. Kam Bhui is Professor of Psychiatry at University of Oxford. Being of Punjabi Sikh heritage, his fascination with the opulent lives of his ancestors, the Maharajas, led him to create a time-fantasy fusion of historical India and post-colonial Britain. 'The Maharaja's Bodyguard' is a young adult tale of courage, love and lossRussell Luyt grew up in South Africa before moving to the UK. He went on to become a professor in the social psychology of gender, with a particular focus on men and masculinity. Now based in Paris, he has traded lecture halls for quiet cafes, channeling his passion for understanding human behaviour into fiction. 'The Midnight Factory' is part 1 of the Shimmerfall trilogy. It's set in the near future where the Bureau for Virtue ensures the world stays hooked and always watching

Let's go back to the 1800s when the English started playing the game on the Indian subcontinent. It was the newly displaced Indian Royals who first took to cricket, as a proxy to their power struggle. This patronage then slowly extended from the Maharajas to skilled Indian commoners, ultimately growing the game in the country and revolutionizing this sport. Hear about their dedication, influence on talent and lasting impact on the game uniting millions only on A Century Of Stories: Cricket podcast, presented by IDFC FIRST Bank hosted by Cyrus Broacha.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SYNOPSIS:We all know the story. From being simply a group of traders in mid-18th century, by the end of it the East India Company goes on to take control over all of India and its vast population. They achieve this despite being very few in numbers. By getting Indians to fight against Indians. But why did these Indians comply? Not just the soldiers but why did so many Maharajas and Nawabs choose to side with the British? Why did the Indian businesses and tradesmen cooperate? Why did for instance the chivalrous Rajputs instead of fighting the invaders roll out the red carpet? These questions have long baffled us. Until recently when we came across book the ‘The Anarchy: The Relentless Rise of the East India Company! SPEAKER:William Dalrymple is a Delhi-based Scottish historian and art historian, as well as a curator, photographer, broadcaster and critic. He is also one of the co-founders and co-directors of the world's largest writers festival, the annual Jaipur Literature FestivalHis books have won numerous awards and prizes, including the Wolfson Prize for History, the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize, the Hemingway, the Kapuściński, the Arthur Ross Medal of the US Council on Foreign Relations, the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award and the Sunday Times Young British Writer of the Year Award. He has been five times longlisted and once shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize for non-fiction and was a Finalist for the Cundill Prize for History. The BBC television documentary on his pilgrimage to the source of the river Ganges, 'Shiva's Matted Locks', one of three episodes of his Indian Journeys series, which Dalrymple wrote and presented, won him the Grierson Award for Best Documentary Series at BAFTA in 2002His most recent book, published in 2019, is The Anarchy, a history of the Indian Subcontinent during the period from 1739 to 1803, which saw the collapse of the Mughal imperial system, rise of the Maratha imperial confederacy, and the militarisation and rise of power of the East India Company. It was long listed for the Baillie Gifford Prize 2019, and short listed for the Duke of Wellington medal for Military History, the Tata Book of the Year (Non-fiction) and the Historical Writers Association Book Award 2020. It was a Finalist for the Cundill Prize for History and won the 2020 Arthur Ross Bronze Medal from the US Council on Foreign Relations.Link to his podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/empire/id1639561921Explore More at - www.argumentativeindians.comDISCLAIMER:We invite thought leaders from across the ideological spectrum. Historically and traditionally, the arts have enjoyed the patronage of kings. We all know that culture broadens minds. It's an important basis by which society finds expression and happiness. So it is in the larger common good that culture has been encouraged. It binds a society and gives it an identity. And a personality. And sets up the basis for cultural interaction with other societies.People like kings patronise the arts to allow its exponents the freedom to live in their minds and pursue their muse. Musicians, dancers, artists, dramatists and storytellers have enjoyed the patronage of the palace. The Maharajas of Mysore—many of them—have pursued the arts themselves. The most notable among them being Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar—the last Maharaja of Mysore before his kingdom acceded to the Union of Indian states in 1947. He was a thinker, a published philosopher, a patron of the arts—but importantly, he, a patron without bias. While there is a rich legacy of Carnatic music patronised by him, Wadiyar fulfilled the last wish of legendary composer Richard Strauss. This is a little known fact.In 1950, he sponsored a performance at the Royal Albert Hall, by London's Philharmonia Orchestra led by German conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler and with soprano Kirsten Flagstad singing Strauss's final composition, Four Last Songs. The Maharaja was an accomplished musician too. Schooled in Carnatic and Western classical music, he tried to make meaning of the two forms and worked tirelessly to find a blend—later admitting that is was difficult. (As a musician, I want to say that unfortunately too many musicians have been pitiless in this pursuit.)Chronicling this unusual Maharaja is my guest today, Deepti Navaratna, author of an unconventionally structured biography of Wadiyar, titled The Maverick Maharaja. But as I researched her, I realised that she is unusual. By my reckoning, she is a wonderful Carnatic singer. And she is a neuroscientist, which means she is licensed to dissect brains in a laboratory.Scientific research is a linear and process driven discipline and conclusions are reached by goals and planned milestones. Surprises are often not welcome. The other side of her, is music. And the point of musical composition is to defy linearity while sticking to a framework of rules and conventions. The point of music is surprise.Maybe the two are connected. And maybe it takes a maverick to make the connection. Let's find out.ABOUT DEEPTI NAVARATNAA musician and neuroscientist, she served as the Regional Director, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts. She directed the centre's research, academic and outreach activities at the intersection of arts and sciences. She is currently the TV Raman Pai Chair of Excellence and Professor of Humanities at the National Institute Of Advanced Studies, Bangalore.Buy The Maverick Maharaja: https://amzn.to/3ALLovEThe Mysore Anthem composed by the Maharaja of Mysore, JC Wadiyar and imagined by Dr Deepti Navaratna: https://youtu.be/axLDJ-HtQIcWHAT'S THAT WORD?!Co-host Pranati "Pea" Madhav joins Ramjee Chandran in "What's That Word?!", where they discuss the word "MAVERICK".WANT TO BE ON THE SHOW?Reach us by mail: theliterarycity@explocity.com or simply, tlc@explocity.com.Or here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theliterarycityOr here: https://www.instagram.com/explocityblr/

Today's destination: Bundi, RajasthanNearest Airport: Sanganer Airport, JAINearest Railway Station: Kota Railway Stn, KOTAPrerequisites - N/APacking - Pack light, carry extra liquids as it can get hot during the dayTime of the year - November to February is the best time to visit; you could also visit in October for the Bundi festivalLength of the itinerary: 3-4 daysItinerary Highlights: We start the journey by describing the beautiful views that one drives past while approaching Bundi by road. Raghavan and Ranjani also remember being reminded of Hogwarts as they approach Bundi on their road tripThe couple start off by going around the town and the first place they check out is Krishnaji's Chai - one of the best tea shops in Bundi. The rest of the day is spent walking around the town given that it was already late evening. The team starts off the next day with a visit to the Taragarh fort and the Garh palace or the Bundi palace. It is advisable to visit the fort first while the temperatures are still low. Some of the monuments the couple find at the Bundi palace includes Hathi pol, Chatar Mahal, Badal mahal, Chitrashala, Jhoola chowk among others. One can find the very popular Bundi miniature paintings as well as a wholesome fill of Rajasthani architecture on display at the fort and palace. The duo then enjoy some home cooked meals at Jai's with the likes of Gatte ki subzee and Dal batti choorma. Other popular food options include pyaas ki kachori, dal ki kachori as well as poha.Next the couple head to the potter's village of Theekarda, from where a majority of the pots and cutlery to the neighboring villages and cities is produced. The next day's agenda included a visit to the popular stepwells of Bundi - some of them include Rani ji ki Baori, Dabhai kund or Dabhoji ki baori. Some popular lakes include Naval sagar lake, Kanak sagar lake, Phool sagar lake. Another popular palace is the Sukh Mahal that was made famous by author Rudyard Kipling of Jungle book fame who penned his novel “Kim” while staying in this palace. Also popular in Bundi are cenotaphs built for the Maharajas - the popular ones being Kshar bagh and 84 pillared cenotaph which gives a good sample of the chattri architecture of Rajasthan. Things to buy include the popular Kota Doria sarees, a dying work of art that goes back to several centuries. One should also check out the Bundi market to pick up some curios, trinkets, bangles and souvenirs. Dont miss checking out the miniature paintings all across the streets of Bundi. There are also rock paintings dating back to over 10,000 years ago as well as the Garodia Mahadev temple and canyon. It can be easy to think of the recent history of India—especially for those who aren't from there—as a straight line, from the Mughal Empire, through the British Empire, to independent India. That, of course, is hugely simplistic, missing the mess of competing polities, interests, and people that made up Indian history over the last few centuries. Manu Pillai's False Allies: India's Maharajahs in the Age of Ravi Varma (Juggernaut, 2021), looks at a few of these political actors: the Maharajas of India, who led the “princely states”. Not quite sovereign entities, not quite directly-ruled colonies. Pillai portrays the stories of a few of these princes and princesses through the life of famed Indian artist Ravi Varma as he travels around India in the latter half of the nineteenth century. In this interview, Manu and I talk about the princely states, the Maharajas, and why Manu chose Ravi Varma to tell the stories of the Indian princes. Manu S Pillai is the author of the award-winning The Ivory Throne: Chronicles of the House of Travancore (HarperCollins India: 2015), Rebel Sultans: The Deccan from Khilji to Shivaji (Juggernaut: 2018), and The Courtesan, the Mahatma & the Italian Brahmin: Tales from Indian History (Context: 2019).
