EP12 - Metal Allergies & Breast Implant Illness w/Dr. Corrie Materie, DC Dr. Corrie Materie was a Chiropractor with a thriving Canadian practice until she was sidelined by breast cancer and thoroughly disabled due to allergies and toxicity from bi-lateral breast reconstruction after her total mastectomy.  Dr. Materie had a long history of reactivity to metals dating all the way back to her earliest childhood recollections. This included ear-piercings and a massive reaction to just the surgical instruments once her tonsils were removed. It even escaped her awareness that metal was the culprit when she had worsening reactions as she played the flute in school and Dr.'s called it “Impetigo”, despite the fact that her flute was clean and she did not heal until a physican expressed that it might be nickel, advising tape over the portion that contacted her mouth….problem solved.  While in chiropractic college, way back in 1996, she began to experience mysterious health symptoms, eventually becoming able to tie the maladies to mercury fillings, and they resolved near immediately once removed. Yet, even her colleagues and caregivers rolled their eyes at her “crazy notions”.  Every surgery seemed to land her in the midst of turmoil, taking her twice as long to heal, with many times the normal complication rate, and sometimes even life-threatening sepsis. She shares multiple surgical examples with her as the guinea pig. Eventually she was prescribed Prednisone prior to surgical procedures and it held symptoms at bay temporarily.  Questioning healthcare providers about the potential of metal allergies, Dr. Materie was dismissed time and time again. She did figure out she had a methylation defect (MTHFR mutation), which affected detox pathways, and for a time just resigned herself to that as the root cause.  Enter cancer and breast reconstruction surgery post-mastectomy, Dr. Materie wakes from anesthesia a changed woman. After the Prednisone wore off she had severe cardiac and blood pressure issues, sweats, swelling, pain, inflammation and the development of a Parkinson's-like tremor. Dr.'s ran every test under the sun. All results  normal.  On a whim, Dr. Materie went to the website for her Allergan breast implants to find a long list of metals and petrochemicals within the various parts of the prosthesis. It appeared she had her answer, along with the answer for why her skin was off-gassing a foul chemical smell that only she could notice.  At just 11 weeks post-op, the breast implants were explanted and the majority of Dr. Materie's symptoms cleared immediately. You don't want to miss the rest of the story! In this episode you will learn: How a material that looks as plain as silicone can be infused with harmful & even deadly metals and petrochemicals. Even when explanted, toxic byproducts can remain in the capsules left behind.  About metal compounds in chemotherapy agents.  ~Links and Resources~ To see the images that accompany this episode click HERE.  ~To learn more visit HeavilyMetalled.com. ~ Check out the “Heavily Metalled” resource page: https://www.heavilymetalled.com/resources ~ Follow Heavily Metalled on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HeavilyMetalled ~ Follow Heavily Metalled on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heavilymetalled/ ~ Subscribe to Heavily Metalled on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@HeavilyMetalled ~ Check out our sponsor MELISA.org ***Many WONDERFUL, supportive special-interest communities exist for metal allergies and diet, hardware issues, medical devices, etc., online and on social media. Consistency? I'm not familiar with a band by that name. Here on Terminus we refuse to color inside the lines of show structure, and so we have a big ol' 2021 style episode for you- or, most of the way. We were supposed to cover 4 records but then our computers exploded so we've just got 3, but never fear, we'll have more expanded Terminus Double Stuf episodes coming to make up for it. The theme for today? Being really ugly and weird and gross. First up: new Impetuous Ritual. One of a triumvirate of Australian noise-ridden black/death bands (the others being Portal and Grave Upheaval,) IR concentrates on pure force delivered through inscrutable yet detailed riffing, dynamic, ever-morphing rhythms, and an expansive soundscape owing to the deep and resonant yet cluttered and noisy production. Beneath the chaos, though, lies the bones of a black metal band deeply invested in second wave traditions and even a pagan flair, pointing to a future potentially even stranger than the present. Next is the surprise return of extreme doom/noise/free improv/Wiggles cover band Khanate with their first new material in 14 years. A perennial favorite of TDMG, Khanate is a band to which few immediate comparisons can be made, creating a sort of torture doom out of exclusively non-metal parts. "To Be Cruel" is an endurance test, sure, but it's also a deep exploration of intensely personal human misery, where minimal yet highly detailed compositions sketch out delicate shades of negative emotion in a way few bands can match. Finally we arrive at the second record by Abraded, an Ohio death metal outfit which rejects the Maggot Stomp style which dominates much of the state in favor of something stranger. Drawing on a range of influences from Impetigo to the Razorback bands and possibly even GBK/Arghoslent, Abraded play death metal in the spirit of the late 80s, without established rules w/r/t timbre, song structure, aesthetic coherency, etc. Post-thrash chug riffs and sprawling prog rock solos not-so-peacefully coexist with frothing goregrind vocals and bizarre synth backing- really, no review is a replacement for listening to this thing. 0:00:00 - Intro 0:03:17 - Impetuous Ritual - Iniquitous Barbarik Synthesis (Profound Lore) 0:52:36 - Interlude - Averse Sefira - “Helix in Audience” fr. Episode 37: Honey in MedicineSmoking cessation update. Honey in medicine. Uses, precautions, honey-related terms. Macroglossia and presbycusis are defined. Jokes about honey. Today is January 15, 2021. The American Thoracic Society approved a clinical practice guideline regarding pharmacologic treatment of tobacco dependence in adults. This guideline was published in May 2020 in the American Journal of Respiratory and Clinical Care Medicine. Seven recommendations about initial medications used in smoking cessation were given, five are STRONG recommendations and two are CONDITIONAL recommendations.Let’s start with the STRONG recommendations for tobacco-dependent adults in whom treatment is being initiated:Varenicline over a nicotine patch is recommended. Remarks: Be prepared to counsel your patients about the relative safety and efficacy of varenicline compared with a nicotine patch.Varenicline over bupropion is recommended. In patients who are not ready to quit smoking, treatment with varenicline rather than waiting until patients are ready to stop tobacco use is recommended. In patients with comorbid psychiatric conditions, including substance-use disorder, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and/or bipolar disorder, varenicline over a nicotine patch is recommended. For tobacco-dependent adults for whom treatment is being initiated with a controller, extended-duration (>12 weeks) over standard-duration (6–12 weeks) therapy is recommended. A controller is a medication with a delayed onset of effect that reduces the frequency and intensity of smoking (i.e. varenicline), whereas a reliever is a medication with acute effect to reduce cravings (i.e. nicotine gum). CONDITIONAL recommendations:Varenicline plus a nicotine patch over varenicline alone is suggested (conditional recommendation, low certainty in the estimated effects).Varenicline over electronic cigarettes is recommended. Remarks: serious adverse effects of e-cigarettes have been reported. The recommendation will be reevaluated if these reports continue.   Quotes about honey: You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. No bees, no honey; no work, no money.Honey is sweet but bees sting.Be like the honey bee, anything it eats is clean, anything it drops is sweet, and the branch it sits upon does not break (Iman Ali, Pakistani actress)When you go in search of honey you must expect to be stung by bees (Joseph Joubert, French moralist)Life is the flower for which love is the honey (Victor Hugo, French poet)______________________________Claudia: Today we have a special episode to honor those with a sweet tooth. We will talk about the ultimate nature candy: honey. Yes, we will talk anything related to honey in medicine.But... what is honey? It is a sticky, sweet, clear yellowish-brown fluid made by bees. How? you might wonder; well they collect nectar in their honey stomach or what they call the “crop” and as you might be guessing they create honey by vomiting this digested nectar. Hector: Let’s start with honeycomb lung. Claudia: Honeycomb lung — This is something many medical students and residents might hear for the first time and think huh? Unfortunately hearing a patient has honeycomb lungs is not at all “sweet news.” Honeycomb lung is indicative of end-stage pulmonary fibrosis, and many disorders such as Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, sarcoidosis, hypersensitivity pneumonia, and eosinophilic granuloma can progress to end-stage fibrosis, but cannot be detected by pathologists at this stage of the disease. For that reason, biopsy of extensive honeycomb lung is not helpful and should be avoided. This Honey-comb appearance of lungs in CT scan has been found to be common in COVID-19.Hector: Yes, honeycombing fibrosis seems to follow ground-glass opacities(1) in COVID 19 patients. Honeycombing are small cystic spaces with irregular thickened walls made out of fibrous tissue. A friend told me this bold statement: “A CT scan is more sensitive than PCR to detect COVID-19”. That puzzled me, and I had to look it up. The American College of Radiology issued a statement saying that “viral testing remains the only specific method of diagnosis. Confirmation with the viral test is required, even if radiologic findings are suggestive of COVID-19 on CXR or CT. CT is reserved for hospitalized, symptomatic patients with specific clinical indications for CT.”(2) Do not use CT for COVID-19 diagnosis.Claudia: Next term is Honeymoon cystitis — Now why would you ruin a honeymoon which is supposed to be fun with the not so fun word cystitis.? Well because this uncomfortable infection is common in sexually active women and it makes sense that it can occur more often in newly-weds during a much-anticipated vacation. Hector: Recurrent urinary tract infections are a common problem in sexually active women. Anatomy is to blame of this problem. Sexual intercourse may cause local irritation of the urethral meatus and lead to cystitis ("honeymoon cystitis"). Claudia: Honey-colored crusts are present in Impetigo — This one is not as pretty as it sounds. Think of honey equals pus for this “honey colored crust”. Impetigo occurs most commonly on the face and can present with bullae, honey-colored crusts, erythema, edema, and exudate.Hector: A very very important topic is Honey in infants— Because it must not be given to them! And here is why.  Infant botulism occurs when C. Botulinum spores, which can live in honey, are ingested, colonize the GI tract, and release a wicked toxin. In the US, most cases are thought to result from ingestion of environmental dust and soil containing C. botulinum spores.  Claudia: The incidence of reported cases of infant botulism is highest in Utah, Pennsylvania, and California, states in which soil botulinum spore counts are high.  Hector: Did you know Utah is called the beehive state? Infant botulism has been associated with the ingestion of raw honey, but telling people “Don’t give honey to your babies” has not changed the incidence of infant botulism in the United States.[Insert joke here: Hey, a patient was admitted to the ICU because of botulism. Dr Saito: Did it take care of his wrinkles?Claudia: Honey has a high fructose content, and it is part of the FODMAPs (fermentable oligo-, di-, mono-saccharides and polyols). A diet low in FODMAPs is recommended in patients with IBS. So, if you have IBS, honey is likely not the best sweetener for you. Now, let’s talk about Honeymoon phase of type 1 diabetes — A few weeks after the diagnosis and initiation of insulin therapy, a period of decreasing exogenous insulin (such as lispro or lantus) requirement occurs, commonly referred to as the "honeymoon" or remission phase of diabetes. During this period, the remaining functional beta cells in your pancreas secrete some endogenous insulin resulting in reduced exogenous requirement, so you give yourself less of the injectable insulin. Hector: I had a real case with this condition. He is a male patient on his mid 20s. He was diagnosed with diabetes let’s say in October 2019. He was admitted to the ICU because of DKA. His A1C was >11. He was sent home on insulin and then in January 2020 he decided to stop insulin “to see if he really needed it”. He came to me in July 2020, and I freaked out, I thought, “this guy’s sugar is going to be 500 and A1C will be in the double digits”. My surprise was that his insulin was 5.3! Claudia: Close monitoring of blood glucose is critical as hypoglycemic episodes are likely if the insulin is not adjusted appropriately. Some clues that the honeymoon phase in type 1 diabetes may be ending are: rising blood glucose levels, higher A1C, and increasing exogenous insulin need, that’s why monitoring is very important. The duration of this phase is variable and may last several months to several years. Hector: Let’s talk about folk medicine. This treatment has been known for centuries: Use of Honey in common cold – honey is an option for treating cough in children who are older than 1 year old with common cold symptoms. Honey can be given straight in 0.5 to 1 teaspoon or diluted in liquid like tea or juice. Corn syrup may be substituted if honey is not available. Honey has a modest beneficial effect on nocturnal cough and is unlikely to be harmful in children older than one year of age. Just as a reminder of what we covered earlier: Honey should be avoided in children younger than one year because of the risk of botulism.Claudia:  In a randomized trial, 300 children (one to five years of age) with upper respiratory infection and nocturnal cough were assigned to receive a single dose (10 g) of honey (eucalyptus, citrus, or labiatae) or placebo (a date extract similar to honey in appearance and taste) before bedtime; caregivers completed a symptom survey on the days before and after the intervention; 270 children completed the study. Symptoms improved in all children after the intervention. However, children who received honey had greater mean improvement in cough frequency (1.85 versus 1.00 points), severity (1.94 versus 0.99 points) and bothersomeness (2.16 versus 1.25 points) than those who received placebo. Hector: Adverse effects such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting occurred in five patients, approximately evenly distributed among each of the honey and the placebo groups. The findings of this trial were confirmed in a 2018 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials (mean difference in cough frequency -1.62, 95% CI -3.02 to -0.22)[3]. Honey also reduced cough frequency compared with no treatment and diphenhydramine.Claudia: Given the relative safety and low cost of honey, the World Health Organization (WHO) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggest it as a potential treatment for URI in young children who are older than one year. The American College of Chest Physicians suggests that honey is more effective than placebo for cough due to the common cold. Hector: Now we can talk about one of the favorite topics of Dr Tu (listen to our episode 6 about wound care), let’s talk about the use of Honey in wound care — Did you guys know that honey has been used since ancient times for the management of wounds? Honey has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity due to its high osmolarity and high concentration of hydrogen peroxide.  Claudia: Medical-grade honey products are now available as a gel, paste, and impregnated into adhesive, alginate, and colloid dressings. Based upon the results of systematic reviews evaluating honey to aid healing in a variety of wounds, there are insufficient data to provide any recommendations for the routine use of honey for all wound types; specific wound types, such as burns, may benefit, whereas others, such as chronic venous ulcers and ingrown toenails after surgery, may not. Hector: Honey in chemoprophylaxis in partial-thickness burns — so this is an interesting one; as we mentioned a couple of minutes ago honey has a broad spectrum antimicrobial activity, remember? High osmolarity and hydrogen peroxide content. Partial thickness burns are prone to rapid bacterial colonization which can potentially become an invasive infection. It makes sense that we can use honey for partial thickness burns.Claudia: Anything more significant than sunburn or superficial burn since those do not need topical antimicrobials, normally, non-perfumed moisturizing cream is all that is needed. Silver Sulfadiazine can also be used but tends to delay healing. Modern hydrocolloid and silver impregnated dressings can be superior but surprise → honey “the ancient wound medicine” is still an effective treatment.Hector: Great, we talked about honeycomb lung, honeymoon cystitis, honey-colored crusts in impetigo, honey in infants, honeymoon phase of type 1 diabetes, honey in common cold, wound care and burns. Fun fact: Honey can be stored indefinitely. Jokes about Honeyby Katherine Schlaerth, Manuel Tu, Claudia Carranza, Gloria Villegas, and GracieWhy do bees have sticky hair? --> because they use honey combs. How do bees get to school? --> on the school buZZZWhat kind of bees make milk? --> BOO beesWhat do you call a bee that lives in America? --> a USBeeWhat does a bee sit on? --> it’s Bee-hind What kind of bees live in graveyards? --> zom-beesAnd remember, a bee that will not stop eating will eventually become a little Chuh-Bee!____________________________[Music] Speaking Medical: Macroglossiaby Xeng Xiong, MS4Your tongue can say a lot about your health. Today, I will go over the medical term macroglossia which means enlargement of the tongue. Symptoms associated with macroglossia may include drooling, speech impairment, difficulty eating, snoring and airway obstruction. Macroglossia is an uncommon anatomical abnormality and is usually a sign of an underlying condition. Some of the diseases associated with macroglossia are Down syndrome, hypothyroidism, tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, and angioedema. Examination often reveals an enlarged appearance on the lateral margins of the tongue caused by crowding against the teeth.  It is important to consider macroglossia as a sign of an underlying disorder and proceed with focused diagnostic testing, including possible biopsy. Treatment should be directed at the underlying disorder. Thanks for listening to macroglossia and have a Tongue-tastic day!____________________________Speaking Medical: PresbycusisHi, I’m Dr Rodriguez and I am presenting the Medical Word of the week. If you remember, in episode 28, we talked about presbyopia, so today I will teach you about presbycusis. Presbycusis is just one form of hearing loss that happens as you age. Presbycusis affects more than half of all adults by the time they reach the age of 75. Presbycusis is a progressive sensorineural hearing loss that mostly affects hearing of high-pitched sounds. That means that a person with presbycusis might have trouble hearing a bird chirping, phone ringing, crowded places but still be able to hear a truck rumbling.Multiple factors can influence the onset and severity of presbycusis, including white race, loud noise exposure, ototoxins (such as aminoglycosides), ear infections, smoking, hypertension, diabetes. In a patient with presbycusis, an audiogram will show decreased pure tone thresholds with relative preservation of word recognition. Even though hearing aids may offer some help, only a small percentage of patients actually receive effective treatment with amplification. Auditory rehabilitation, when available, is usually practiced in combination with hearing devices in presbycusis. For patients with severe presbycusis with poor response to conventional amplification, cochlear implantation offers hope to restore hearing. So, remember the medical word of the week: presbycusisAlyssa: Before you go, let me ask you a serious question. Many people told Beethoven that he would not make good music because he was deaf, but did he listen?____________________________[Music] Question of the week: Diabetes managementby Claudia Carranza, MD Q: What is the first treatment approach for type 2 DM? For example, for a patient who had polydipsia, polyuria for a few weeks and at your office had a random BG of 210. ________________________Now we conclude our episode number 37: “Honey in Medicine.” We started with an update on medications used for smoking cessation. Then, Dr Carranza and Dr Arreaza presented medical conditions related to the word “honey”, and they explained evidence-based uses of honey in medicine. Dr Rodriguez defined presbycusis, and future Dr Xiong explained macroglossia. You may ask, “what does smoking, honey, deafness, and big tongues have in common?” The answer is: Family Medicine. Remember, the question of the week is: What is the first treatment approach for type 2 diabetes? The listener with the best answer will receive a prize! Impetigo is a common bacterial skin infection, characterised by blisters or vesicles which then rupture and develop a crusted lesion. It is also known as school sores, as it is so common in kids and spreads like wildfire amongst classes if not treated and general measures taken to prevent spread.    It is caused by staphylococcus and group A streptococcus. Although impetigo is usually very responsive to topical or oral treatment, a number possible complications do occasionally occur, with the most serious being rheumatic fever from group A streptococcus.    You don't want to miss:  How to differentiate impetigo from other rashes Important differentials to consider How to describe impetigo to a parent  Treatment of impetigo Complications of impetigo Tips to help prevent the spread of impetigo    Links and resources:   Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourekiddingright.pod/ and  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourekiddingrightpod-107273607638323/   Our email is yourekiddingrightpod@gmail.com   Make sure you hit SUBSCRIBE/FOLLOW so you don’t miss out on any pearls of wisdom and RATE if you can to help other people find us!   (This isn’t individual medical advice, please use your own clinical judgement and local guidelines when caring for your patients)

I am needing some guidance on where to begin. I am wanting to have some of your functional lab test performed at the beginning of the year but not sure which one to start with. I live a healthy lifestyle, work out 6 days a week with weights and hiit/Tabata, rarely eat out and buy all organic. The time I go to bed I am learning is far to late (between 12-1 am).  I have been having odd issues creep up over the last 2 years. I have developed a skin disorder called dermatographia, also called skin writing. Basically when I scratch an itch it gets really red and swells. I also have high cortisol levels (24 in the morning and around 21 at 5pm). My cortisol binding globulin is also high. I struggle with anxiety and have all my life. My fasting glucose is also a little high (around 100); however my a1c is normal at 5.1. Lastly, I have a sore in my nose that I cannot get to heal. My initial thought was pre diabetes, but I am not overweight and with my a1c being normal, I am stumped as to what is going on. I am a 33 yr old female, 5'7", 133 lbs. any insight would be greatly appreciated.   Thank you so much!  Lance: Hi Dr, I work with people who have long-term illegal drug use in their past. My clients are in early recovery and I firmly believe that nutritional changes can prevent more negative consequences in their lives. I will be using your MM podcasts to uplift and help them set new goals for success. What type of nutritional changes would you initially suggest for people who have anywhere from 5 - 30 plus years of Methamphetamine use? Denise: I have RA that I am trying to control with the AIP protrocal but after 2 years  of this I am still having problems. If I try the FOOD sensitivity  test would it show much when I have been on such a restricted diet . I HAVE severe brain fog and some hand joint inflammation and bad hair loss. Do you or your team have any advice for me. I recently  found your podcasts and love it. I hope you can help me. I HAVE SEEN 2 functional  medicine doctors that did a lot of testing but it did not help much. I went to someone who reads energy and she did help  some by adding sunflower oil that stopped the dehydration problem. Then adding B vitamin helped some brain dysfunction. Any help would be appreciated.  SINCERELY  DENISE  Gary: Hi Dr. Cabral, My name is Gary from Philippines and I'm interested with your book - Rain Barrel Effect. Don't you have any paperback version of the book? I'm interested because I've believe in reversing ailments and my son was diagnosed with autism and I'm following GAPS diet for him and we're seeing improvements. Hope to hear from you. Regards, Gary 1,000th Question: Bree: Hi Dr. Cabral, My 3 year old son has had recurrent impetigo breakouts around his mouth. He was prescribed a topical antibiotic ointment which I put on the sores as soon as they start. It usually takes about 2 weeks for them to clear up. It just doesn't seem normal for him to be constantly getting these sores. There must be something wrong at a deeper level. He's generally healthy otherwise. No major health issues, typical 3 year old. He does have a terrible diet. He pretty much refuses to eat anything green. Sometimes I can get him to drink a smoothie but it has to be pretty mild for him to drink it...so mostly fruit and a bit of spinach. I'm thinking my next step is to get the sores cultured....ugh! What are your thoughts?? Thank you SO much!!!  Kevin: Hi Dr. Cabral, I was wondering if you could provide me with 2 nutrition books that most impacted you? I am going in the nutrition/fitness field and crave to learn more about the topic. Thank you, Kevin Thank you for tuning into this weekend’s Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right! - - - Show Notes & Resources: http://StephenCabral.com/702 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral

Topic intro 21st century pediatricians are getting used to being consulted about child health problems in new and unique ways- via email, by way of video calls, and yes, with texts.  So it was the other day when I got a few texts, with photos, about my 9-month-old great nephew's outer ear and scalp. These texts were sent by my niece, the baby's mother. Her son had developed some redness behind his ear that looked angry to his mom. Interestingly, the previous week, both his six-year-old brother and mother came down with culture proven strep throat.  Very interesting, now little Elliott has a skin infection behind his ear. Could they be related, my niece asked? And my answer was... you bet they're related. Which brings us to today's pedcast topic-skin infections in children.  Specifically we are going to address the following questions: Why do children get more skin infections than adults? Are there different kinds of skin infections in children and if so, how are they classified? What are the best treatments for common skin infections in children? Can skin infections be prevented? And, was there a reason that Grandma insisted that her children wash behind their ears? So sit back and take a listen to today's pedcast that I call, "Grandma Knew, Wash Behind Those Little Ears".   Musical intro Why do kids get skin infections? Let's start with the first question, why do children get more skin infections than adults. If you think of your skin as a barrier to the germy outside world, the answer becomes obvious. Any situations that break that barrier and introduce germs to a broken outer protective layer of skin, you, know, the epidermis of the skin, increases the chance that the child will develop a skin infection. Remember, kids are different than adults in a number of ways: they have thinner skin than adults that is easily torn, they are much more active than adults  making injuries more likely, they definitely have more abrasions and cuts than adults because they move way more, they hang out with children who carry lots of mean germs making inoculation of their broken skin more likely, and they are just dirtier. Their fingers are in their noses, in the trash and dirt, and scratching dirty parts of their bodies far more than adults.  All of these factors increase a child's chance of contracting a skin infection. What germs cause most skin infections? Which germs are most likely to infect a child's skin you may be wondering? It turns out that two nasty germs account for almost all the skin infections in children and their names are probably familiar to you...staph aureus and streptococcus pyogenes. Yes the same strep that causes so much misery in the form of strep throat in children. Both are bacteria that have the ability to latch onto broken skin or even invade the skin and tissues below. In very rare cases, they even make it into the child's blood and cause overwhelming life threatening illness. Fortunately, this is rare. Usually staph and strep infections of the skin stay fairly superficial. When strep is the cause of the infection, crusting of the skin is the most common feature, often with a dried honey look. Staph, on the other hand, tends to go deeper faster, causing pustules and boils along with blistering of the skin, the so-called bullous (meaning blister) type of skin infection. To be complete, I should mention that there are viruses and fungi that can infect skin but these types of infections are much less common. Staph and strep are the big bad players when it comes to skin infections.   How are skin infections classified? Now we are going to talk about how doctors classify skin infection but to do so, we are going to get a little more technical. I'm going to teach you some doctor speak. Impetigo, or infantigo as some people call it, refers to a condition where the very surface layer of the skin becomes infected... you know, the epidermis. Actually,
