The Jazz Episles were a very short lived Jazz group from South Africa. They were inspired by Art Blakey`s Jazz Messengers and like the early Messengers, they were a co-operative band. The band was the brainchild of pianist Dollar Brand, who after his conversion to Islam became Abdullah Ibrahim. The others in the band were Kippi Moeketsi on alto saxophone (sometimes called the Charlie Parker of South Africa), trombonist Jonas Gwangwa, trumpeter Hugh Masakela. bassist Johnny Gertze, and drummer Makaya Ntshoko. The album was recorded in Capetown in 1960. Sadly due to a variety of circumstances this was their only recording but it shows the strength of the spirit of Jazz that a recording of this quality could be made under the repressive circumstances of apartheid South Africa. The tunes include a trio track and a piano solo track by Dollar Brand. An ensemble tune by Brand and one tune by Hugh Masakela and one by Jonas Gwangwa and three by Kippi Moeketsi. Verse 1 stands as a monument to the qualities of freedom and joy of Jazz music.

Every once in a while, an artist comes along who gets so caught up in the sweep of history that the world seems to create itself for the artist's work, rather than the other way around.  Dollar Brand came of age as a pianist in South Africa in the late Fifties, just in time for the multiethnic explosion of Johannesburg's Sophiatown.  In the wake of the repression that followed the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960, he became a European exile.  Within months, his music came to the attention of Duke Ellington who was so moved that he brought about the LP session Duke Ellington presents The Dollar Brand Trio on Frank Sinatra's Reprise label.     Brand came to New York, subbed for Duke leading the Ellington Orchestra and attended Juilliard.  But experiences with John Coltrane, Don Cherry and the progressive cadre of the Jazz world gave him a new appreciation of his African roots and he incorporated them into his music.  He returned to South Africa, converted to Islam and became Abdullah Ibrahim.  With these changes came a new style of music that embraced the multi-kulti, freedom-loving culture of his native Cape Town.  His song "Mannenberg" became a theme for the anti-apartheid movement.   After South African police fired on children during the Soweto Uprising of 1976, Ibrahim publicly came out in support of the African National Congress and subsequently returned to New York.  Here he found a community of open-minded musicians and an audience that was supportive of his distinctively contemplative and deeply grooving music.     After the Apartheid regime fell and Nelson Mandela became president, Ibrahim returned to Cape Town; In 2022, he is still recording and performing throughout the world.     What's that you say?  "Gary Lucas?  That guy's a rocker!  Who is he to talk about Abdullah Ibrahim?"   A rocker?  Guess what: so is Abdullah Ibrahim!  Have you heard Gary's version of Ibrahim's "Bra Joe From Kilimanjaro"?  You will have a whole different understanding of who both of these guys are.  Besides, Gary Lucas is a true musical gourmand of the New York old school and I love to talk about music with him.  I can't wait to hear what he has to say about his fellow iconoclast.  As always, the WKCR archives have delivered some rare beauties for us to cherish.     This Monday (Sept. 19) on WKCR 89.9FM, WKCR HD-1 and wkcr.org.  Next week it goes up on the Deep Focus podcast on your favorite podcasting app or at https://mitchgoldman.podbean.com/   #WKCR #JazzAlternatives #DeepFocus #AbdullahIbrahim #GaryLucas #MitchGoldman #JazzInterview #JazzPodcast   Photo credit: Tore Sætre, CC BY-SA 4.0 , via Wikimedia Commons

This week Tom briefly revisits his theme of local high school dances of yesteryear that featured live bands, give you a preview of some very worldly artists in the lineup for Summerfolk this year and play some tracks to convince you to come out to Electric Eclectics' event at Black Bellows on June 18. In the first camp, tracks from Perth County Conspiracy, Liverpool, Peter Schilling (a German star who scored a hit with english lyrics by Wiarton's David Lodge) and the Forgotten Rebels. To bridge the themes, a 2004 track by Beverley Glenn Copeland, who played OSCVI and the first two Summerfolks. Coming to Summerfolk this year: Cuban powerhouse Okan with a track featuring Rauzzy Ferrer, the world fusion of Moskitto Bar, Anishnabek artist Aysanabee and the amazing Estonian duo Puuluup. Hear a real stunner from South Africa's Abdullah Ibrahim aka Dollar Brand in honour of the Durham Sauntering Band's performance of the track in Owen Sound's Earth Day Parade. Finally, we wrap up with tracks from Debby Friday, Zones and Lee Paradise, who will be on the bill (with a few others) for Electric Eclectic's June 18 shindig.

Turn your ideas into a reality with Shopify: https://bit.ly/3oKx0yj After growing up as a global citizen, Rhuigi Villaseñor settled in Southern California and found his twin passions: clothing and hustle. As a teen the young design prodigy used his eye to flip vintage clothes, which fattened his pockets but also deepened his knowledge. Knowing full well what he didn't know, Rhuigi relentlessly networked and apprenticed himself until he got his first break. A single t-shirt design of his, the bandana tee, rang out locally, until, in a moment of serendipity, Kendrick Lamar wore the piece on stage at the BET Awards and everything changed. RHUDE would be born shortly thereafter, and Rhuigi would go on to create a unique language at the intersection of Americana, Luxury and Streetwear that would drive the brand to the pinnacle of cool and also to commercial success. But of course not without his fair share of mistakes and missteps. Tune into this weeks episode to hear how he scaled the business and just kept bouncing back despite every adversity in his path. At the age of 19, entrepreneur Ben Francis founded Gymshark now a global fitness apparel powerhouse valued at $1.3 billion and today, he joins the Disruptive Entrepreneur podcast to discuss he journey from bedroom to board room, the mindset needed to start, grow and scale a brand and why empowering a great team around you can help to drive your business forward.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Luck comes in all different shapes and sizes and it is situational to every individual's upbringing, skillset and circumstances. To some degree, you also make your own luck in life. Intuitive thinking and taking risks can help to set you apart from your competition.   Having the mindset of saying “I don't care what you think, I am going to do it anyway” in business, may work up until a point. However, when you start to build great teams you begin to realise that this mindset cannot continue as you need to build the amalgamation of all the ideas around you. You need to then take those ideas and morphe them into a vision and then learn to communicate them in an eloquent and inspiring way. You have to be able to learn new skills very quickly and be open-minded with them.   You cannot let your failures define you. Some people will allow you to believe that they have never failed, and they tend to be the ones that don't perform as well. Be open about failure and encourage that within your business.   One of the most fundamental truths in growing your business is that the more responsibility you take on, the more meaning your life will have. When you have people reporting to you, you work for them. You need to be there for them, support them and give them the tools to allow them to succeed. You end up working in overdrive to support the people reporting to you.   Within a team, you need different people to form a great team. However, they should all be highly motivated people, that are good human beings that want to create a change within the world.   BEST MOMENTS “Luck comes in many different shapes and sizes. It is situational.” “I think those skills definitely adapt as the business grows.” “Anything negative, I am not going to have anything to do with it.” “The only very few regrets I do have been when I haven't trusted my gut and gone through with something.”   ABOUT THE GUEST At age 19, Francis founded Gymshark out of his bedroom in his parents' house. Now the fitness apparel and accessories brand is one of the fastest-growing companies in the U.K. The Instagram-savvy brand's revenue reached $50 million last fiscal year and is expected to hit $120 million in 2018. “It’s really important to only share information with life-givers.” Listen, as Cayla shares her top three things she learned from starting Mommy Millionaire about three years ago. She will dig into how it started and the journey to where it is today, plus much more on this episode of https://www.mommymillionaire.co/ (Mommy Millionaire). Cayla discusses the YouTube channel she started, the first mastermind she attended that gave her the push to start the podcast, and the three things that allowed her to build a seven-figure brand in a year. The Mommy Millionaire is in the top 100 podcasts for entrepreneurs. Listen in as Cayla shares that you need to put yourself in a room of people you don’t know to listen, learn, and connect. You need to declare that you are worthy of what you are striving for, and you need to stay away from dream stealers and only share information with life-givers, like a coach. It would help if you had someone who will cheer you on, not someone who tries to keep you from reaching your goal. *Cayla has opened The Mommy Millionaire Mastermind one last time* Cayla has found that by being a part of a mastermind, she got in the right room with the right people who caused her to uplevel. What she found is that she really wanted to create a special group of women because she believes when you get females together, we can learn how to harness our feminine energy to build powerful empires. Head over to http://www.mommymillionaire.co/mastermind (www.mommymillionaire.co/mastermind) to fill out an application to join today. In This Episode: [01:40] Hello, my beautiful mommy millionaires! [02:24] Cayla shares that a little over three years ago, she started a YouTube channel. [04:08] Cayla speaks about the first mastermind she attended. [06:02] The number one thing Cayla has learned is to put yourself in rooms where you don’t know anyone. [07:09] Cayla created a seven-figure brand in one year because she declared. My guest today is Amy Lacey, founder of the multimillion dollar brand, Cali’flour Foods!  After being diagnosed with lupus in 2010, Amy realized she needed to change her eating habits and set out to recreate foods that no longer worked for her like the pizza nights that her family enjoyed together every week. Her Cali’flour products have won numerous awards and  have been featured by everyone from Dr. Oz to “Whoopi’s Favorite Things” on The View. Pianist and 2019 NEA Jazz Master Abdullah Ibrahim combines the musical influences of his childhood in Cape Town, South Africa, which include traditional South African songs, gospels and spirituals, and Indian ragas, with the improvisation of jazz to create a sound that is distinctly his. Born Adolph Johannes Brand in 1934, he was known professionally as Dollar Brand before changing his name when he converted to Islam in 1968. Ibrahim, along with Hugh Masekela and Kippi Moketsi, formed the short-lived but impactful septet The Jazz Epistles who recorded the first South African jazz album, Jazz Epistles, Verse 1. Because of the limits imposed on black South Africans by the repressive apartheid government, Ibrahim left the country. He traveled first to Zurich, where he met Duke Ellington who recorded him, and then to New York City, where he met everyone else and played in Carnegie Hall. He returned to South Africa briefly and in the mid-1970s composed what became the people's national anthem, “Mannenberg.” Exiled once more, he returned to South Africa at the invitation of Nelson Mandela and performed at Mandela's presidential inauguration. In this podcast episode, Abdullah talks about his many diverse musical influences, his deep love of jazz (which he calls “the highest form of music”), living and performing under apartheid, exile, and the musician as healer. We pack a lot into this podcast, but Ibrahim has had a long, rich life.

It’s a folksy, repetitive number that’s also bright and somewhat festive and also easy-going and fluid. It was my introduction to the music of Abdullah Ibrahim a few decades ago, when he still performed under the name Dollar Brand. It made me a fan. The next of his albums that I got hold of is titled “African Space Program” and features an album cover photo of the broad, dusty Savannah – a nice play on the concepts of folkways and modern progress. I hope you relax into the easy rhythms of the piece. I also came to know Joni Mitchell’s music way back then – must’ve been the 70’s. A friend told me about this album. “The Hissing of Summer Lawns”, is another title that I love, with album art depicting a group of people carrying a python across an expanse of green that fronts a cityscape of both residential homes and skyscrapers. Art & Music. Ideas, Images & Sounds. Mostly old classic works this Set. But give a good listen to the very outstanding newer music. Buble with an oldie but goodie, Ashley Henry with a dynamic pulser, and Polish Mazolewski teaming with American Gonzalez for a very playful and conceptual piece. Playlists for all past Sets of Jazz Gumbo will be found at jazzgumbo.blogspot.ca This set was broadcast and recorded shortly after the passing of Hugh Masekela on January 23rd. I never got to see Masekela live, but enjoyed his music from the time of his big hit in the 60’s with “Grazing In The Grass”. The album I played from here, “I Am Not Afraid” has been a favorite for decades. It was only after years of listening to his music, and that of his countryman Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly known as Dollar Brand), and later to Ladysmith Black Mambazo, that I came to recognize the particular South African-ness of this music. There’s a beautiful melancholy in it that evokes a depth of feeling. It’s music that – like the tune I played this night – can’t help but tell a story. It’s just so full of life and memory. How many of the musicians who contributed to this Set have passed, I couldn’t say. Oscar Peterson passed not so many years ago, and in tonight’s offering he makes a dazzling tribute to Ellington, who passed long before him, and to Billy Strayhorn, who wrote “Lush Life”, one of the sweetest, most melancholy tunes ever written. What a thing it must be to leave music behind, and to forever be able to touch hearts with melody and harmony and rhythm, as these great musicians have done. They spread joy, they spread love, and so remain deeply engaged with life. Thrive! Kirby Obsidian

Elvin Jones was one of the most compelling and inventive drummers in the history of Jazz. In 1965 he left the John Coltrane "Classic Quartet" and struck out on his own leading his bands that he dubbed "The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine". These were groups of various sizes that he led until his passing in May of 2004.This was one of his first records post-Coltrane and Elvin put together a fine band for this Atlantic date done in March of 1966.Elvin's older brother is here on cornet and it's the magnificent Thad Jones. Hank Mobley is on tenor saxophone and he lives up to his name as "the welterweight champion of the tenor saxophone". On piano is the South African guru of Jazz, Dollar Brand aka Abdullah Ibrahim. This is an early recording by Dollar as he had just moved to New York from Europe via South Africa. On bass is the lesser known but strong Don Moore, On one tune Elvin and Thad's cousin takes over the piano chores on electric piano and his name is Steven James. A varied program of originals by Brand, Mobley, Thad Jones and Elvin and electric pianist Steven James make up this fine and often overlooked record. Midnight Walk is a fine documentation of the beginning of Elvin Jones' career as a bandleader.
