South African bassist, composer, and arranger Herbie Tsoaeli is affectionately known, in certain circles, as Malume, a term of respect for older men who serve as elders. In this episode, we discuss his origins and inspiration. He was raised in Cape Town during the 1976 Soweto Uprising and describes the effects of Apartheid on his development. His parents, wanting him to be a doctor, were initially disappointed by his musical path, but he found himself called by legends like Coltrane and Abdullah Ibrahim. He talks in-depth about playing with some of the greatest South African musicians: Bucs Gongco, Winston Mankunku Ngozi, Hugh Masekela, Bheki Mseleku, and many others. Before parting, we discuss his concept of the term "African Time" and its many meanings.. https://herbietsoaeli.com

The hosts begin by exploring the latest addition to the Star Wars canon, The Acolyte, created by Leslye Headland (Russian Doll). Amandla Sternberg and Lee Jung-jae lead the who-dunnit mystery, and while there is a lot to admire about the show's visuals and depiction of the Master Jedi, The Acolyte often sags under the baggage of the vast Star Wars mythology and suffers from fundamental pacing problems. Then, the three tackle Godzilla Minus One, a genius and emotionally rich parable about wounded masculinity and the national trauma felt in a post-WWII Japan. The kaiju film, released at the end of last year, won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2023, and immediately shot to No. 1 on Netflix when it hit the streaming service last week. Finally, the panel is joined by Dan Charnas (author of Dilla Time and The Big Payback) to discuss Sabrina Carpenter's “Espresso” and his very sharply framed piece for Slate, “The Musical History Lesson Buried Beneath the Song of the Summer.”  In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel tackles: children's birthday parties. We had the great fortune of meeting saxophonist Keith Loftis when he was playing with The Baylor Project this spring at Earl Klugh's 20th Weekend of Jazz at The Broadmoor. We knew then that we wanted to continue our backstage conversation in a formal ATJ episode.     Over the course of his musically wide-ranging career, Keith's performed with the likes of Benny Carter, Cedar Walton, Nancy Wilson, Frank Foster, Alvin Batiste, Clark Terry, Bobby Shew, Joe Williams and Ray Charles; he's traveled extensively around the globe performing regularly throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and parts of the Middle East with legendary South African Jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim; master drummer Michael Carvin; the Roy Hargrove Big Band and the Frank Foster Loud Minority Big Band. As we found out when we met him, he's also a main fixture in the 6x Grammy nominated The Baylor Project featuring other great friends of ours, Jean & Marcus Baylor. And if that weren't enough, Keith's also a touring member of 4x Grammy award winning bassist Christian McBride's A Christian McBride Situation and The Christian McBride Big Band.     We talk with Keith not only about his eclectic and fascinating background, but about one of our personal favorite albums, his 2021 release ‘Original State'.

The Jazz Episles were a very short lived Jazz group from South Africa. They were inspired by Art Blakey`s Jazz Messengers and like the early Messengers, they were a co-operative band. The band was the brainchild of pianist Dollar Brand, who after his conversion to Islam became Abdullah Ibrahim. The others in the band were Kippi Moeketsi on alto saxophone (sometimes called the Charlie Parker of South Africa), trombonist Jonas Gwangwa, trumpeter Hugh Masakela. bassist Johnny Gertze, and drummer Makaya Ntshoko. The album was recorded in Capetown in 1960. Sadly due to a variety of circumstances this was their only recording but it shows the strength of the spirit of Jazz that a recording of this quality could be made under the repressive circumstances of apartheid South Africa. The tunes include a trio track and a piano solo track by Dollar Brand. An ensemble tune by Brand and one tune by Hugh Masakela and one by Jonas Gwangwa and three by Kippi Moeketsi. Verse 1 stands as a monument to the qualities of freedom and joy of Jazz music.

Every once in a while, an artist comes along who gets so caught up in the sweep of history that the world seems to create itself for the artist's work, rather than the other way around.  Dollar Brand came of age as a pianist in South Africa in the late Fifties, just in time for the multiethnic explosion of Johannesburg's Sophiatown.  In the wake of the repression that followed the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960, he became a European exile.  Within months, his music came to the attention of Duke Ellington who was so moved that he brought about the LP session Duke Ellington presents The Dollar Brand Trio on Frank Sinatra's Reprise label.     Brand came to New York, subbed for Duke leading the Ellington Orchestra and attended Juilliard.  But experiences with John Coltrane, Don Cherry and the progressive cadre of the Jazz world gave him a new appreciation of his African roots and he incorporated them into his music.  He returned to South Africa, converted to Islam and became Abdullah Ibrahim.  With these changes came a new style of music that embraced the multi-kulti, freedom-loving culture of his native Cape Town.  His song "Mannenberg" became a theme for the anti-apartheid movement.   After South African police fired on children during the Soweto Uprising of 1976, Ibrahim publicly came out in support of the African National Congress and subsequently returned to New York.  Here he found a community of open-minded musicians and an audience that was supportive of his distinctively contemplative and deeply grooving music.     After the Apartheid regime fell and Nelson Mandela became president, Ibrahim returned to Cape Town; In 2022, he is still recording and performing throughout the world.     What's that you say?  "Gary Lucas?  That guy's a rocker!  Who is he to talk about Abdullah Ibrahim?"   A rocker?  Guess what: so is Abdullah Ibrahim!  Have you heard Gary's version of Ibrahim's "Bra Joe From Kilimanjaro"?  You will have a whole different understanding of who both of these guys are.  Besides, Gary Lucas is a true musical gourmand of the New York old school and I love to talk about music with him.  I can't wait to hear what he has to say about his fellow iconoclast.  As always, the WKCR archives have delivered some rare beauties for us to cherish.     This Monday (Sept. 19) on WKCR 89.9FM, WKCR HD-1 and wkcr.org.  Next week it goes up on the Deep Focus podcast on your favorite podcasting app or at https://mitchgoldman.podbean.com/   #WKCR #JazzAlternatives #DeepFocus #AbdullahIbrahim #GaryLucas #MitchGoldman #JazzInterview #JazzPodcast   Photo credit: Tore Sætre, CC BY-SA 4.0 , via Wikimedia Commons

After last episode's extravaganza we decided to keep our focus on larger ensembles for this outing.  It's a mix of historical issues (some better engineered than others) and two nearly brand new releases.  What do they have in common?  Ain't none of them trios.   Pop matters gets historical as we contemplate Pitchfork's deathless mediations on the "oldness" of Steely Dan.  Jazz Station Big Band – MOODS; Woody Herman – MOODY WOODY ; Dollar Brand – AFRICAN SPACE PROGRAM; Michael Leonhart – THE NORMYN SUITES.
