This week we welcome acting mentor and career coach Charlotte Thornton to the podcast. Charlotte trained at Mountview and after graduating without an agent, she worked primarily in Fringe Theatre before an encounter with a career coach specifically in LA changed the trajectory of her career. After going on to appear on the West End and at The National Theatre, Charlotte has gone on to coach actors at every stage of their career. Her wisdom and advice was so good to hear and I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. @charlottethornton_coach (Instagram) @charliethornton (twitter) https://www.facebook.com/CharlotteThorntonPage https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn9Vg5D-7qn0lZIDme-LNjg If you enjoy this podcast, please consider supporting us on Patreon patreon.com/user?u=30855788 or over at Buy Me a Coffee buymeacoffee.com/starvingart

Beyoncé's Renaissance: we discuss Beyoncé's house and disco inspired new album – her first solo material in six years - and her huge significance as an artist and cultural icon. Nick is joined by Jacqueline Springer – curator, and music journalist and lecturer, and by Dr Kirsty Fairclough who specialises in popular culture and music. The Arctic is Don Paterson's new collection of poems. The title refers not to the polar region but the third worst bar in Dundee, the resort of survivors of various apocalypses. Other poets are a presence, too, in Paterson's poems ‘after' Gabriela Mistral, Montale and Cavafy. Nick Ahad interviews Don Paterson about this poetic cornucopia. David Byrne is the artistic director and chief executive of London's New Diorama, the Stage newspaper's Fringe Theatre of the Year. He joins Nick to explain his decision to present no public programme for the rest of the year. Free-for-All is a programme that does what it says on the tin – all artworks on the walls of the Touchstones Gallery have been made by people from Rochdale. Artist Harry Meadley joins Nick to explain the concept. And we remember American actor Nichelle Nichols, best known for her role in Star Trek as Lieutenant Uhura, who has died aged 89. Oriana Fox speaks with live artist Daniel Oliver about the daring mix of pre-planning, chance, nakedness and collaboration in his work. Oliver wants audiences to be euphoric about or made uncomfortable by his participatory work, anything but indifferent. In embracing the label dyspraxic along with punk aesthetics, he welcomes the potential for getting things wrong. In fact, he believes that's what makes live art the ideal medium for his work. Taking agency as a neurodiverse artist for Oliver means that if you don't like what he does, you're just ableist.   The first half of this interview was recorded live on Instagram in May 2021 as part of Oriana's digital residency at Mimosa House Gallery. What does it take to make work that is excites people on a national and international level? What are you prepared to do in order to make work you are truly proud of? My guest this week is theatre writer and director Declan Greene. He has a body of work that spans every major theatre institution in the country. He got his start in Melbourne’s literal and figurative underground - staging plays in underground carparks and building sites - and is now of the best regarded theatre makers of his generation. But that doesn’t mean he’s lost his edge.  Declan's work still crosses genres and formats and merges high-brow and low-brow culture, queer performance art, multimedia, in-jokes, bad language, pop art and surrealist absurdity - but always with a view to comment on society or humanity or the profanity of culture - or all of the above. His recent direction of Blackie Blackie Brown - written by Nakia Lui and currently showing at the STC - is no exception. It melds Japanese manga iconography with Tarantino themes for a tale of aboriginal revenge on white-settler injustice. The play is simultaneously visually astounding, shocking, thought-provoking funny and tapping of some current-day zeitgeist that makes it feel truly progressive. Next up, in July this year, the MTC will stage Declan's adaptation of the Lars Von Trier film, Melancholia. And it is Declan’s tenacity that I am most admiring of.  In the decade, he has amassed a huge body of work - averaging the release of two plays a year. When I sat down with Declan for this interview last year, around the time of the release of his play The Homosexuals, I wanted to find out what his creative process looks like in a practical sense - how does he manage to average multiple major works in a year… and before someone was paying him to do so, how did create a lifestyle in which he could get good in the first place? This episode is great for anyone looking to get active in a their ideal career space by pooling passion and resources amongst your creative community. There’s never been a better time to ‘screw it - just do it’.
