Actress Nichelle Nichols is best remembered for playing Lieutenant Uhura in the original Star Trek series. Landing the role was a personal win for Nichols, making her one of the first African American women on a major TV show. But a greater win was to come of it. Nichols had actually resigned from Star Trek after its first season, to return to her theater work. But then she met Martin Luther King Jr., who urged her not to leave. For the first time, he said, African Americans were being seen on TV as intelligent people who could do anything, even go to space. By playing Lieutenant Uhura, Nichols was achieving a greater win—showing Black women and children what they could become. It reminds me of the time James and John asked Jesus for the two best positions in His kingdom (Mark 10:37). What personal wins such positions would be! Jesus not only explained the painful realities of their request (vv. 38–40) but called them to higher goals, saying, “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” (v. 43). His followers weren’t to seek personal wins alone but, like Him, use their positions to serve others (v. 45). Nichelle Nichols stayed with Star Trek for the greater win it provided for African Americans. May we too never be content with a personal win alone but use whatever position we gain to serve others in His name.

A story of boldly going where no one had gone before! Nichelle Nichol's role as Lieutenant Uhura in the original Star Trek series was groundbreaking. Civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. praised her work for defying stereotypes and revolutionizing portrayals of Black individuals on television. Her influence and advocacy for more diversity at NASA sparked new interest in space travel and helped to recruit brilliant STEM talents like Dr. Sally Ride, Colonel Guion Bluford, and Mae Jemison.SYNOPSIS: While Jonathan and Mr. Redge are at the Once Upon a Time Con, they come across an artist booth called Deep Space Drawings by Deanna. They meet Deanna, who is a fan of Star Trek and has created artwork inspired by the series. They share Nichelle Nichols story and her role as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura and how it was one of the first non-stereotypical portrayals of a Black woman on television. They also talk about how Martin Luther King Jr. convinced Nichelle Nichols to stay on the show because of the positive impact her character had on the civil rights movement. Besides her role as Uhura, Nichelle Nichols also created new interest in space exploration and opened the doors of opportunity for more people of color to work at NASA. Impressed by Deanna's art and inspired by the story of Nichelle Nichols, Redge decides to purchase some of Deanna's paintings. He declares himself a Trekkie and expresses his eagerness to explore space. The episode concludes with the hosts and Deanna bidding farewell and wishing each other to "live long and prosper." They then head to the Cosplay competition, with Redge's dragon costume expected to be a top contender.Go to the episode webpage:https://jonincharacter.com/nichelle-nichols/ If you liked this story about a hidden hero of history who inspired space exploration, you may also like Episode 5 on Mary Golda Ross, whose pioneering work helped put humans into space: https://jonincharacter.com/mary-golda-ross/ CREDITS: This episode has been a Jonincharacter production. It works… bitches“ https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=n6hxo1sC-dU Intro/Outro-Music: A Few Moments Later by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Episodenbilder: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynn_Margulis#/media/Datei:Lynn_Margulis.jpg, Self-published work by Jpedreira, CC BY-SA 2.5 https://www.flickr.com/photos/nasahqphoto/46506443632, NASA/Joel Kowsky https://thebridge.agu.org/files/2019/08/Pluto_Kelsi-Singer.jpg, Photo by Rayna M Tedford/WUSTL Photos
On this week's episode of Random Trek, Captain Ingle and I take a look at an installment of the first animated series in the Star Trek franchise. On this episode, the U.S.S. Enterprise encounters a planet populated by women who, like the sirens of Greek mythology, lure the men of the crew. However, their charms are ineffective on the female crew members. Lieutenant Uhura and Nurse Chapel must figure out a way to break the spell that has their fellow crewmates enthralled. In this episode we celebrate and explore the films of legendary film-maker, John Carpenter! Carpenter is such a unique director, a man who has always done things his own way, with a real talent for story-telling. The Planet 8 crew will start by discussing Carpenter's early life and how he became a film-maker.We move on to a discussion of the qualities that define John Carpenter's style. Obviously we'll talk about his work with his film soundtracks, but there are so many other aspects to a "John Carpenter film" - the 'slow burn' or building of suspense, his use of unusual camera angles or long takes, his distrust of authority figures, and so much more.As we go through Carpenter's style, we'll talk about his films, lingering on some of our favorites, including The Thing (we dedicated a whole episode to it -you can hear it here), Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, They Live, and Big Trouble in Little China. But we also talk about some of his films that aren't on our favorites list too, just to balance things out.Without a doubt, Carpenter has an impressive and varied portfolio that includes some real classics. If all he had ever done was make The Thing, he would be a master, but he's made so many films that exhibit incredible skill and style. He's truly an amazing film-maker.For the Sensor Sweep this week, we sadly note the passing of Nichelle Nichols, famed for her portrayal of Lieutenant Uhura on the original Star Trek. Nichols was 89. Beyond the impact she had in her role as one of the very first African American women on TV who wasn't in a subservient role, Nichols went on to work with NASA to recruit women and people of color into the astronaut corps. A constant presence on the convention circuit, she was known for her warmth and beautiful smile. She will be greatly missed. That's it for this go round. On July 30th, actress Nichelle Nichols passed away at the age of 89. While best known for portraying Lieutenant Uhura in Star Trek, she also played a huge role in shaping NASA in the late 1970s, so we thought it was a great time to discuss that, and the link between space flight and Star Trek. We asked Emily's boss at Celestis, Charles Chafer, if he'd like to come and talk about this, as it's something he's very passionate about too.Full show notes: https://spaceandthingspodcast.com/Show notes include links to all articles mentioned and full details of our guest, plus videos of any launches.Image Credits: NASASpace and Things:Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/spaceandthings1Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/spaceandthingspodcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/spaceandthingspodcast/Merch and Info: https://www.spaceandthingspodcast.comPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/SpaceandthingsBusiness Enquiries: info@andthingsproductions.comSpace and Things is brought to you And Things Productions https://www.andthingsproductions.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/spaceandthings. Intro regulars: Schumann Resonance News for 7 places on Earth, the spikes happening in the otherwise calm baseline of 7.83 Hertz! Sun activity, cosmic radiation news, solar wind news, CME and sunspot news. NASA's all sky cameras fireball news for the USA. Intro: I discuss signs and wonders that the Universe throws our way.. I tell the story of the crazy white tomcat that broke into my house so that he could steal a little bit of food and chase around my cat and then sleep on the shelf and play possum when I try to remove him. Is this the second installment of the crazy cat lady kit? I discussed what a white cat means and also a few fun facts about white cats that you probably did not know. Also discussed are a couple more #ascensionsymptoms Tonight's Topic: The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ! (Part 25) We read chapters 148 through 153 and we will start with 154 next week. Several more places were caught that were the religious over zealousness but the rest of it were true. Jesus or rather brother Yeshua came and sat with us during the reading of this and he told me that the reason why Lazarus kept having issues with his health and dying is because he had an immune disorder. Back then they didn't know what it was called but he was a very loving beautiful man and everyone loved him greatly but he had always been sickly. This time is the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the tomb after 4 days dead. I started this show at 12:33 and ended it at 2:22 for those of you keeping score with Angel numbers. We also hear about Jesus cursing the fig tree and that it was dead the very next day. And also he cured a blind man again but this time it was with the man's Faith rather than spitting in his eye and rubbing dirt in his eye and making him wash his face with ocean water LOL. We get a couple good laughs with this one. When I started the second half of the show was moments after I found out that Nichelle Nichols had passed on to heaven and so I dedicate this episode to the lovely "Lieutenant Uhura". Now she joins several of her other cast members from Star Trek the Original series in the Great Beyond.
We dedicate this episode to the memory of Nichelle Nichols. Her portrayal of Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek inspired millions.Welcome back to The Cosmic Companion. RODDENBERRY ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES #TALKTREK, A CAMPAIGN WITHIN YEARLONG #THINKTREK CELEBRATION HONORING STAR TREK VISIONARY GENE RODDENBERRY'S CENTENNIAL YEAR Bill Nye, LeVar Burton, George Takei, Michelle Yeoh, Alison Pill, Santiago Cabrera and Many More Partner With Roddenberry Entertainment to Recite 100 of Gene Roddenberry's Inspirational & Insightful Quotes in Honor of Late Creator's 100th Birthday, August 19, 2021 As part of the yearlong #thinkTREK campaign, honoring Star Trek creator and visionary Gene Roddenberry, over sixty notable celebrities, creatives, and scientific leaders have collaborated with Roddenberry Entertainment to share 100 of Mr. Roddenberry's most impactful quotes over the course of the 100 days leading up to his 100th birthday on August 19, 2021. As part of the sub-campaign dubbed #talkTREK, the videos will post daily across Roddenberry Entertainment's social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, beginning on May 12. Accompanying the video quotes, is a 100 episode, limited series, daily podcast called "Quoting Gene Roddenberry" hosted by famed blogger Trent Vanegas (Pink is the New Blog) and actress Rachel True (The Craft). Each short-form episode begins with an audio reading of the day's quote from the video campaign, followed by a lively discussion between our hosts and that week's guest host. The conversations are invigorating deep dives into the meaning, history, ethos and impact of Gene Roddenberry's words. Currently, guest hosts include actor Ming Chen, actress Mary Chieffo, Oscar nominated screenwriter Josh Olson and more. During the same 100 days as our videos, and coordinated to match the video quotes released, Amazon's Alexa will be able to respond to the prompt "Alexa, play the Rodenberry daily quote?" - providing that day's quote through the Alexa voice app. "My father, Gene Roddenberry, was an ordinary man with an extraordinary vision for the world - one of unconditional love, diversity, and unity of all people - and that vision is shown through not only Star Trek, but through the words he spoke in his lectures, his interviews and his writings. To have members of the Star Trek franchise and celebrity fans bring those words back to life is a very exciting way to celebrate a momentous year in his history," says Rod Roddenberry. Noteworthy participants in the #talkTREK campaign include Bill Nye, LeVar Burton (Star Trek: TNG), George Takei (Star Trek: TOS), Michelle Yeoh (Star Trek: Discovery), Alison Pill (Star Trek: Picard), Santiago Cabrera (Star Trek: Picard), Michelle Forbes (Star Trek: TNG), Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: TNG, Star Trek: Picard), Jerry O'Connell (Star Trek: Lower Decks), Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Comic Book Men), Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas, Nixon), Brenda Strong (Star Trek: TNG, Desperate Housewives), and many more. #talkTREK is one component of a yearlong, multi-faceted celebration of Roddenberry's creative genius and his contributions to culture and the humanities. In an effort to promote Roddenberry's ethos of kindness, inclusivity, and always working to better yourself, Roddenberry Entertainment and Star Trek fan communities are encouraging everyone to #thinkTREK: to see and act on Star Trek's philosophies in our own personal relationships, in daily life, and in the world. The #thinkTREK campaign initiatives include not only #talkTREK but also #seeTREK, #beTREK, and #makeTREK, each playing out online and across social media. Thousands of Star Trek fans have engaged with the #seeTREK and #beTREK campaigns by submitting examples of where they see Star Trek out in the world (like in a pie presented to look like the Starship Enterprise), and of real-life people and stories who represent being Star Trek, which means reflecting the values embraced by the series, like an astronaut who achieved his dreams after starting out in life as a farmworker. In #buildTREK, master builder Samuel Hatmaker is designing and building a series of four iconic moments from the series out of toy bricks, the first of which was Captain Kirk and Lieutenant Uhura's Kiss, which was shared by Collider. For more information on Roddenberry Entertainment and their centennial celebrations, please visit Roddenberry.com/thinktrek, or follow their social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Also this year, The Roddenberry Foundation has donated $100,000 to the Comic-Con Museum to support renovation and programming plans, recognizing the Museum's efforts to highlight inclusivity, innovation, and creativity while honoring Gene Roddenberry's legacy.

Rekha Sharma played Tory Foster on Battlestar Galactica and Commander Landry on Star Trek: Discovery – both phenomenal roles for a Fijian Indian Canadian woman who grew up watching Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek and dreaming of a career in showbiz, despite the fact that there weren't a lot of people who looked like her working in the film and television industry. But Rekha made it happen, and in this raw and revealing conversation with Sabrina Furminger, she reflects on her journey from little dreamer to science fiction mainstay. Also: Was Tory Foster really a bad person? What does Star Trek: Discovery feel like behind the scenes? All that – as well as Rekha's impression of Edward James Olmos and her thoughts on giraffes – in this special episode of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast. Episode sponsor: Fish Flight Entertainment

This Weeks Community Question Is: CQ: Does Star Trek need Star power to entice new fans? Do you think the addition of an Actor like Will Smith or Brie Larson would help or hurt Star Trek? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan “It's Interview Time” With Dawnn Lewis Kelvin Pike had “Punch it”. Prime Pike had “Hit it”. Lorca? “Go”! Picard posthumously procured Prime Pike's “Engage” from “The Cage”. So who could blame Cerritos Captain Carol Freeman for wanting to follow Starfleet trailblazers by conjuring up her very own catch phrase - though “It's Warp Time” may need a little work. This week, Dawnn Lewis - the voice of the aforementioned Captain Freeman - talked with TV Guide about her love of Star Trek, the Captain's relationship with her daughter, and what she wants to do next. Lewis told TV Guide about her history with Star Trek, saying ”I used to risk getting into trouble in order to watch Star Trek because it would come on when my brothers and I were supposed to be asleep. We would get in front of our little, small black-and-white TV with blankets and sheets covering us to make a tent to muffle the sound so that we could watch the adventures of Captain Kirk, Lieutenant Uhura, and Mr. Spock traipsing through the galaxy” In regards to Captain Freeman's relationship with her estranged Daughter - Ensign Beckett Mariner, Lewis said ”Their relationship reminds me of growing up a preacher's kid. [...] you often find that the preacher's kids are probably the baddest kids in the church. They are trying to break every rule, trying to be everything except what their parents have been trying to encourage everybody else to be. So even if you're one of the best parents, sometimes your kids can still make choices that you really wish they would not make.” Dawnn Lewis, who is currently working with Lower Decks co-star Jack Quad on Amazon's “The Boys”, talked about what she wants to do next, telling reporter Keisha Hatchett ”Please make me an alien in Discovery, Picard, somewhere. Please make me an alien. I want to do it” CBS All Access Gets a New Name - Paramount+ Have you been waiting with bated breath for the announcement of CBS All Access' new name? So call your family, get your resume up-to-date, bathe yourself, and get ready for the big reveal! But seriously, you should clean yourself up. On Tuesday September 15th, Viacom CBS dropped the news that starting in early 2021, the service formerly known as CBS All Access would soon and henceforth be called - Paramount+. With Paramount+, we're excited to establish one global streaming brand in the broad-pay segment that will draw on the sheer breadth and depth of the ViacomCBS portfolio to offer an extraordinary collection of content for everyone to enjoy.”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnfDBLIprkQ&feature=youtu.be Deadline reports that ViacomCBS' other streaming service - Showtime - will continue to operate independently from the newly named Paramount+, but that the Australian “10 All Access” will fall in-line with its US counterpart. No definitive announcements were made about price, tiering, or availability outside of the US and Australia - which are undoubtedly big questions that need answering. Keep listening, we'll let you know more when we find it out!. From StarTrek.com ”The Television Critics Association (TCA) was proud to bestow the Heritage Award upon Gene Roddenberry's landmark 1966 sci-fi epic Star Trek, in recognition of the groundbreaking series which brought the future to life — illustrating a unique vision that is equal parts hopeful and cautious as it explored issues such as bigotry, religion, politics, sexism, and human rights through timeless stories of love, war, intrigue, and adventure in outer space — with the help of a strong cast that was among the first to feature an African-American actress in a significant leading role.”. The son of Star Trek creator, head of the Roddenberry Podcast Network, and our friend - Rod Roddenberry - accepted the award. Once again, we'd like to congratulate Star Trek on this well earned award! RUMOR REPORT: Will Smith Being Eyed for Trek! No, we aren't talking about the background actor that appeared as a Ventu in Voyager's seventh season episode “Natural Law” - though we aren't taking anything away from THAT Will Smith's performance or career, either. We are talking about “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air”. One of the “Bad Boys”. “Hancock”. THAT Will Smith. Photo Courtesy of Memory Alpha From WeGotThisCovered ”According to our intel – which comes from the same sources that told us Captain Pike would be getting his own spinoff long before Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was announced – the studio are keen to recruit Will Smith to play a Starfleet captain. Although, at this time, it isn't yet clear exactly what movie they're eying him for.”. Scott Campbell, the writer of the story, goes on to say that the studio is also looking to add Robert Downey Jr. and Brie Larson to the franchise and that ”it would certainly appear that the studio [is] actively seeking an injection of star power to ensure that the next installment in the franchise can make it into production sooner rather than later.” Will Smith. Five unique 1-of-1 ships are being Dutch auctioned for the event, starting at an eye-watering $100,000. The Disco USS Enterprise NCC-1701 has already sold, fetching $873.50. Up for auction at the time of recording is the USS Shenzhou, currently priced around $50,000 and ticking down. And coming up after the Shenzhou are the Klingon Sarcophagus ship, the USS Yeager, and finally the USS Discovery herself. A new Star Trek: Discovery Crate is also available now in CSC as part of the event. The $20 loot box contains 5 items, either Star Trek Ships or Star Trek Ship Skins. The Skins can also be converted into a collectable currency used to acquire the Star Trek Ships in-game.
This week on Episode 478 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out’ why Dawnn Lewis thinks Mariner is like a preacher's daughter, CBS All Access’ new name, Star Trek’s TCA Heritage award, and a trip to Bel Air! In Star Trek gaming, Timelines celebrates its newest event, and Crypto Space Command goes to Black Alert. Then, Dr. Robert Hurt joins us for this week’s Astrometrics Report Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Question Is: CQ: Does Star Trek need Star power to entice new fans? Do you think the addition of an Actor like Will Smith or Brie Larson would help or hurt Star Trek? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan “It’s Interview Time” With Dawnn Lewis Kelvin Pike had “Punch it”. Prime Pike had “Hit it”. Lorca? “Go”! Picard posthumously procured Prime Pike’s “Engage” from “The Cage”. So who could blame Cerritos Captain Carol Freeman for wanting to follow Starfleet trailblazers by conjuring up her very own catch phrase - though “It’s Warp Time” may need a little work. This week, Dawnn Lewis - the voice of the aforementioned Captain Freeman - talked with TV Guide about her love of Star Trek, the Captain’s relationship with her daughter, and what she wants to do next. Spock traipsing through the galaxy” In regards to Captain Freeman’s relationship with her estranged Daughter - Ensign Beckett Mariner, Lewis said ”Their relationship reminds me of growing up a preacher's kid. [...] you often find that the preacher's kids are probably the baddest kids in the church. They are trying to break every rule, trying to be everything except what their parents have been trying to encourage everybody else to be. So even if you're one of the best parents, sometimes your kids can still make choices that you really wish they would not make.” Dawnn Lewis, who is currently working with Lower Decks co-star Jack Quad on Amazon’s “The Boys”, talked about what she wants to do next, telling reporter Keisha Hatchett ”Please make me an alien in Discovery, Picard, somewhere. Please make me an alien. I want to do it” CBS All Access Gets a New Name - Paramount+ Have you been waiting with bated breath for the announcement of CBS All Access’ new name? Were you spending the time anxiously awaiting the rebrand of the On-Demand Streaming service? Have you forgone relationships, job opportunities, and basic hygiene for fear of missing the news when it finally drops? Well friends, the wait is over. CEO Bob Bakish said in a press release ”Paramount is an iconic and storied brand beloved by consumers all over the world, and it is synonymous with quality, integrity and world-class storytelling. With Paramount+, we’re excited to establish one global streaming brand in the broad-pay segment that will draw on the sheer breadth and depth of the ViacomCBS portfolio to offer an extraordinary collection of content for everyone to enjoy.”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnfDBLIprkQ&feature=youtu.be Deadline reports that ViacomCBS’ other streaming service - Showtime - will continue to operate independently from the newly named Paramount+, but that the Australian “10 All Access” will fall in-line with its US counterpart. No definitive announcements were made about price, tiering, or availability outside of the US and Australia - which are undoubtedly big questions that need answering. Keep listening, we’ll let you know more when we find it out!. Star Trek Receives a TCA Heritage Award Finally this week, we’d like to congratulate Star Trek on its Television Critics Association Heritage Award! From StarTrek.com ”The Television Critics Association (TCA) was proud to bestow the Heritage Award upon Gene Roddenberry’s landmark 1966 sci-fi epic Star Trek, in recognition of the groundbreaking series which brought the future to life — illustrating a unique vision that is equal parts hopeful and cautious as it explored issues such as bigotry, religion, politics, sexism, and human rights through timeless stories of love, war, intrigue, and adventure in outer space — with the help of a strong cast that was among the first to feature an African-American actress in a significant leading role.”. The son of Star Trek creator, head of the Roddenberry Podcast Network, and our friend - Rod Roddenberry - accepted the award. Once again, we’d like to congratulate Star Trek on this well earned award! RUMOR REPORT: Will Smith Being Eyed for Trek! Now, this is a story all about how Our show got flipped-turned upside down And I'd like to take a minute Just sit right there And tell you how we covered rumors ‘bout Star Trek right here! Click-baity website WeGotThisCovered.com posted a fun bit of rumor this week, saying that ViacomCBS was looking to add one of Hollywood's biggest stars to its Star Trek lineup - Will Smith. No, we aren’t talking about the background actor that appeared as a Ventu in Voyager’s seventh season episode “Natural Law” - though we aren’t taking anything away from THAT Will Smith’s performance or career, either. Although, at this time, it isn’t yet clear exactly what movie they’re eying him for.”. Marvel Comics’s Black Panther was originally conceived in 1966 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, two Jewish New Yorkers, as a bid to offer black readers a character to identify with. The titular hero, whose real name is T’Challa, is heir apparent to the throne of Wakanda, a fictional African nation. The character of Lieutenant Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols, was so vital for African-Americans — the black woman of the future as an accomplished philologist — that, as Nichols told NPR, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. himself persuaded her not to quit the show after the first season. It was a symbol of great progress that she was conceived as something more than a maid New York Times Magazine

CNN remembers "Plato's Stepchildren" (more or less) As part of its current retrospective on the 1960s, CNN highlighted the Original Series episode "Plato's Stepchildren" as an example of how, in that tumultuous decade, "Television [began] to tackle serious issues." As long-time fans know, this third-season episode is best remembered for a moment often touted as network television's first interracial kiss, when the telepathic Platonians force Captain Kirk and Lieutenant Uhura to lock lips. Unfortunately, CNN didn't summarize the episode with 100% accuracy, but it still highlights the importance of Star Trek in breaking new ground. Read the full CNN article, "5 surpising things 1960s TV change." Lost Apollo continues the Five Year Mission in TOS style Since 2009 we've gotten roughly four hours of content from the rebooted J.J. Abrams Star Trek. That's barely one new TV episode per year. At the end of Into Darkness the Enteprise is ready to finally start that famous five-year mission. Of course, we'll never see it in any substance in the theatre. IDW, however, is bringing us the adventure in comic form through the Star Trek Ongoing series. The last issue, "Lost Apollo, Part 1" delivers the goods with a story that feels very reminiscent of The Original Series. Read TrekCore's review by Patrick Hayes.

From wikipedia.org: Nichelle Nichols (born Grace Dell Nichols on December 28, 1932) is an American actress, singer and voice artist. She sang with Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton before turning to acting. Her most famous role is that of communications officer Lieutenant Uhura aboard the USS Enterprise in the popular Star Trek television series, as well as the succeeding motion pictures, where her character was eventually promoted in Starfleet to the rank of commander. Her Star Trek character was groundbreaking in U.S society at the time, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. personally praised her work on the show and asked her to remain when she was considering leaving the series.
