Bungalow Terrace reads like an insider's account of the lives of The Beatles, The Four Seasons, and The Beach Boys all rolled into one. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it to you.

In this episode Ben and I discuss how all companies need to think like media or marketing companies. Why? Tune into to hear this great insight. And what has Ben's extensive research identified as the #1 problem in most companies with culture/ performance. It's not what you think. It's not bean bag chairs, ping pong tables or free snacks. Hear how craft, cause and community are three tenants you can build a modern workplace culture around. Ben's over arching message is "stop guessing and start measuring!" In his culture architect, strategic advisor and writing career, Ben Ortlip worked with some of the world's top brands, including Coca-Cola, Ritz-Carlton, Mercedes-Benz, AT&T, UPS, and Chick-fil-A. Episode #43 - Riki McManus began with her own talk show on KQRS Radio in Minneapolis while still in high school. She went on to the commercial industry in Minneapolis as On Camera and Voice Over Talent. McManus continued as an agent and then became the Director of Plaza Three Model and Talent Agency. She opened the first casting company in Minnesota, where Purple Rain was the first feature she casted. Since then, she has cast approximately 20 feature films. She won a Clio Award for a self-promotion piece she did with The Fallon Agency in Minneapolis for her company. Our screening took place at the Minnesota Discovery Center the largest museum the largest museum complex in Minnesota outside the Twin Cities. For her short, Riki brought Rated Directed by John Fortson with his directorial debut that won 14 Best Short FIlm Awards at Festivals. We have to say our audience would have given it award as well. The subject matter of the film is so relevant in our technilogical world, it's a short about social media commenting how kind we are in our society. We had The Rustic Pig pack a school lunch for each of our audience members to enjoy during the screening. The feature Riki brought to screen was Purple Rain, which was not only Prince's debut feature, but also the first feature Riki worked on as well. She tells stories of when she met Prince, the difficulties in casting the film, and experiencing one of Prince's famous free concerts. So check this out and don't forget to drink some champagne and celebrate Prince as we did on this very memorable night at the Minnesota Discovery Center. Credits: Host - Justin Joseph Hall Production & Event Space - Minnesota Discovery Center Food - The Rustic Pig Post-Production - Quatre-Vents Editor - Billie Jo Laitinen Sound Mixer - Hans Bilger Production Assistant - Elizabeth Chatelain Production Company - Fourwind Films The theme song of Season 7 is New Tires by Silent Partner.
Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to professional photographer Donavan Freberg, son of actor, musician, author, advertising executive, comedian, musician & radio personality Stan Freberg & mother Donna Freberg. On the first part of this episode, we learn from Donavan about his years growing up in a somewhat dysfunctional (his words) but very loving home (also his words). We learn that every day was Christmas in the Freberg home and that school was more of an suggestion than a firm commitment. We also learn how and where Stan Freberg literally (my words, not his) came up with the term “Grammy”. On top of that we learn that mother Donna was Frank Sinatra's assistant and likely was the person who booked both Stan and Josh's mother Edie Adams on The Frank Sinatra Show in 1958. We also talk about Stan's career in advertising where he won 21 Clio Awards, his puppet Orville the Moon Man and how his dad got into show business, when he literally (our words) got on a bus and said, “Take me to Hollywood,” and landed on the doorstep of a talent agent. In the second half of this episode, Donavan was brutally honest & raw and frankly it gets a bit dark. We've tackled this topic of aging parents on previous episodes and it's always a bit gut wrenching. It also hits home with our host Josh Mills who has his own story on this very topic. When hangers-on latch on to the celebrity, and look to grab whatever specialness and the fame they crave for themselves, in order to get what they want well…. take a listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story. And this one is all too familiar.

This week's guest is movie poster illustrator and designer Akiko Stehrenberger. Akiko was born in South Lake Tahoe, California in 1978. A first generation American, she is the second youngest of four children with one sister and two brothers. Akiko's father, designer Mark Stehrenberger is Swiss German and her mother Aichu Yeh from Taiwan—which, until she was eight years old was under Japanese rule— and they met when they emigrated to Los Angeles in the 60's. Akiko's mother spoke both Japanese and Mandarin but fostered more of a Japanese culture. Although she was not a professional artist, she encouraged Akiko to take up drawing and apply for art school; that being the preferred option to her enlisting for the army, which came close to being a reality. And so, in 1997 Akiko began studying illustration and design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. She also worked a variety of jobs to get through college and after she graduated in order to pursue her career and pay off student loans. New York beckoned and she moved from Southern California to learn the trade of becoming a designer and illustrator. When her mother became ill, Akiko moved back to LA. It was also coincidentally at the time when magazines were moving online that she fell into the movie poster industry, which changed the course of her life. In 2004, she officially began her career as a movie poster artist. It would be the film Funny Games, for which her poster was chosen, that put creative directors and the film industry on notice that here was an artist making her mark. Akiko is now a 23-time CLIO Award winner who was deemed the “Poster Girl” by Interview Magazine. Vanity Fair included her Funny Games and Kiss of the Damned posters in their “Best Movie Posters of All Time” list. Her "Da 5 Bloods" is on view at the Academy Motion Pictures Museum. Akiko's portfolio includes Portrait of a Lady on Fire, TÁR, Dune, Beef and Everything, Everywhere All at Once, to name just a few. Akiko combines traditional illustration techniques and modern graphic design to create textural elements with fearless experimentation showcasing her crafty intuition and versatility by capturing the essence of a film in a single image. New Life director John Rosman said: “Akiko is simply one of the best poster artists of all time.” Her first book, Akikomatic: The Work of Akiko Stehrenberger, published in 2020 will be updated with more recent posters later this year for its second edition. Edited highlights of our full conversation. Here's a question. What are you responsible for? This week's guest is Emma Armstrong. She is the CEO of FCB New York. Most recently, the office was named Agency of the Year at the Clio Awards. Both as an office and as a company, the last few years have been stellar by anyone's standards. There are always many reasons for a company's success, particularly when that success is sustained - the hardest kind to achieve. In my conversation with Emma, she described client relationships in a way that stayed with me long after we had said goodbye. Unlocking creative thinking and innovation is hard to do when you are in a vendor-supplier relationship. Because, while creativity is the most powerful business problem solver we have, it requires conditions and an environment not always present when one side is telling the other what to do. Creativity and innovation are fueled by trust. And trust happens when you believe that the person on the other side of the table, or the screen, cares - genuinely cares - about your well-being. The creative industries have many people who do not engender trust. They demand more for less - more output for less money. More commitment for less respect. But the true and full power of creativity is unleashed when all parties take seriously the responsibility that each of us has to the person across the table. Brand, agency, employer, employee. Parent, child, friend. When both of us can put the other person's interests first, well, that's when the world is changed.

In the latest episode of the Empowerography Podcast, my guest is Magdalena Jensen. My name is Magdalena Jensen - I am a certified coach, NVC conflict mediator, Women's Circle facilitator, podcaster and imperfectly perfect human, navigating this earthly experience in the best possible way I can in each and every moment. My mission is to support people to love themselves, to trust themselves and to change the world, beginning with themselves. It's pretty obvious that the current social, economic, geopolitical situation isn't working anymore... change is required. In fact, it is inevitable. I support people like YOU to navigate change, starting with yourself, to deliver a new paradigm, a new way of being, a new earth. I am no stranger to change, myself - in fact, I thrive in change. I was born in the United States and, at 18 yo, took a huge leap of faith and moved to Poland in search of something - a different way of life. Intuitively, I knew that the path I was set up for was not meant for me... This spontaneous leap changed the trajectory of my life for the better. I spent the next 13 years (with a brief stint back in the US to complete a university degree and 6 months in France volunteering with disabled adults), creating a new life for myself in Warsaw. What started as a career in national radio shifted into entrepreneurship in the music industry. I have launched 2 commercial music companies, one pan-European non-profit, been shortlisted for a Clio Award for my work as a creative director and even named a few buildings in Warsaw's financial district while working as a copywriter. My professional career has been diverse and incredibly stimulating. And it burned me out. I lost myself in work. I was not happy. I was not the sparkling version of ME I knew myself to be. In this episode we discuss morning routines, working in the music industry as a woman, transformation, the destruction of the patriarchy and the fact that you are enough. “There's nothing more important or more powerful than staying fresh and staying relevant. There's just a lot that you have to do with your communication and your marketing and your branding to achieve that.” - Kristi PalmerWelcome back to the To Be Blunt podcast! In this episode, Shayda Torabi welcomes Kristi Palmer of Kiva, currently the number one edibles brand in California. Kristi tells the story behind their innovative products and elevated branding and marketing. She also takes us through how they are navigating out-of-state operations and continuing to expand on the untapped potential of cannabis.[00:00 - 05:03] Prediction for Federal Legalization[05:06- 18:03] A Professional, Trustworthy, and Information-Forward Brand[18:04 - 24:36] Customer-Driven Innovation[24:37 - 30:00] Creating Products for Different Consumers [30:01 - 38:28] Insights on Interstate Cannabis Commerce[38:29 - 49:26] Strategies for Succesful Cannabis Marketing[49:27 - 56:43] Authentic Collaboration and Merchandising When Kristi Palmer and her husband Scott founded Kiva in 2010, it was during California's growing medical cannabis days. Frustrated by the inconsistent, low-quality edibles available at local dispensaries, Kristi and Scott saw a unique opportunity: a chance to reinvent cannabis edibles and deliver a more consistent, safe, and delicious product than consumers were used to at the time. They began making cannabis-infused chocolate bars out of their Bay Area home kitchen, and the rest is history. Today, Kiva's award-winning chocolates, mints, gummies, and chews are the most trusted, recommended, and sought-after edibles available. For this, Kiva has become the most recognized edible brand in cannabis with a passionate customer base throughout hundreds of dispensaries in CA, AZ, NV, MI, IL, OH, OK, MA, HI, and now Canada. Kiva has won over 20+ Best Edibles and Best Edibles Producer awards for their portfolio of Kiva and Terra chocolates, Petra mints, Camino gummies, and Lost Farm gummies and chews. In 2020, they also won six prestigious Clio Awards for marketing and advertising excellence in the cannabis industry.Connect with Kristi!Check out KivaConfections.com.
