Hello everyone! Our Q&A is finally here! A big warm thank you to all who submitted questions. It really does mean the world to us. For the very astute among us, you may notice a couple things right away: 1) This is a Part 1. We have been known to take our time with our responses to things. And that is on display here. 2) We did not get to every question. Contrary to Zoe's declaration. Even on the upcoming Part 2. So be on the lookout for a follow up, to the follow up. When will this be? That sounds like a scheduling nightmare I wouldn't count on that being right away. Episode 1 From Scott via email: (Based on Still Wakes the Deep episode) If you were able to give your ideal game pitch, what would the game be and to who would you make the pitch, seeing that they would be the best to carry out your idea (e.g. Naughty Dog, The Chinese Room, Giant Sparrow, or maybe try to get a one on one with Lucas Pope?)? (Based on Neva): Stars in the night sky sometimes seem to get brighter, sometimes dimmer, or sometimes fade out entirely: here in 2024, is there a game that stands out that you think you would either raise or lower its ranking from when you reviewed it? Is there a game that you think would be worth a second shot, either one that fizzled out (Starfield) or one that you rated low that might be worth another look, like seeing if you actually hated a book from school for the book or because high school said you had to read it? Is there anything on the horizon that has your interest gaming-wise, either one that would end up on the podcast or one that you'd play for yourself? (Full disclosure: asking this as I am still watching the trailer for Dispatch which hits a ton of buttons for me) From Ben via email: As the darlings of indie darlings what do you think AI is going to do to the current AAA/indie funding models/ the industry in general? How do you think the balance between creation and curation is going to be affected? What music do you play to when you aren't listening to in-game music (if such a thing happens)? I mean obviously one would never be so disrespectful to Darren Korb but you know, other games maybe What do you think of Bungie's possible demise (again)?

Moopsy! As Lower Decks is back for the last time, we're looking at three animated Star Trek episodes, specifically ones about strange creatures. The Eye of the Beholder brings us weird dopey-looking elephant slug things who are actually more evolved than humans! A Tribble Called Quest brings us all kinds of mutant tribbles including a bizarre horrible Tribble with a face! On June 18th 2024, British game developer The Chinese Room released a horror game that hoped to combine elements of John Carpenter's "The Thing" with motifs found in movies like "Midsommar", and The Lighthouse. That's a pretty bold and ambitious plan to say the least! That game was Still Wakes the Deep. Described as a first person psychological horror game, Still Wakes the Deep sees the player take on the role of Caz McCleary an electrician aboard the Beira D oil rig in the North Sea in the year 1975. Haunted by decisions in his past, including a more recent violent altercation, and the loss of trust from his wife and partner Suze, Caz must navigate a crumbling infrastructure aboard the oil rig, a slew of electrical issues, and the cosmic horrors of the unknown on his journey back to his home and family. In a game filled with a cast of wonderfully realized characters, superb voice acting, and heavy themes, it is perhaps the lack of real mechanical depth in the game that leaves the most room to be desired. This is a game that asks many intriguing questions about psychology, grief, and body horror, it's just a shame that the ways it gives you in gameplay to explore those themes is surface level. All in all though, Josh and Colin had a wonderful time playing this game. It doesn't overstay its welcome, and respects your time. If you're looking for a game to play during the upcoming Spooky season that can accompany a longer game, this may be the one for you! Coming up next month on Surviving the Horror, Colin and Josh will be sinking their teeth into the newly released Silent Hill 2 Remake. We hope you'll join us then, and thank you for listening!

The new game from The Chinese Room, Still Wakes the Deep, is a surprisingly great horror walking sim that is super reminiscent of Alien and The Thing. Thanks again to RAF Regular Alex Kozina for joining us this week! https://twitch.tv/kozibearlive https://twitter.com/alexkozina
Storytelling-strong, narrative-rich video games are the catch of the day, with reviews of Still Wakes the Deep from The Chinese Room, as well as Don't Nod's Jusant, plus we go hands-on with Courtisans by Pandasaurus Games. Well hello there dear listener, and welcome back to another episode of Trophy Talk! In episode 115 we have some more trophy lists to review for your consideration as well as all the normal run of the show including Patreon topics, and shout outs to our fantastic community members and the platinum's they've earned in the past two week period! The game's this episode run the gambit. First, Josh reviews the list for the upcoming Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, a game that appears to take a refreshing stance on some storied mechanics in Souls games. Strangely the price point for Flintlock is much lower than we would have imagined as well which points to this experience being shorter (which is a good thing). Next up Darryl reviews the first person narrative horror game Still Wakes the Deep, developed by The Chinese Room, a studio in Scotland... who would have guessed! The game looks great though, and being a first person narrative spin on horror, is one that's right up Darryl's alley. Lastly, Colin takes us to the era of the Viking in Volgarr the Viking II, an 80s arcade inspired action side scroller known for its brutal difficulty and demanding mechanics. While this game is short, and seemingly simple, the first Volgarr was one of the hardest games that Colin has ever played. As noted, this episode of course features some Platinum shout outs from our Discord, appeals to our Rage God, and answers to your Patreon submitted questions. What is our favorite animation in all of gaming? What PS2 classics do we want brought to the PS4 and PS5 next? Do our spouses ever help us earn trophies, or accidentally make us miss a trophy at the last second? Only the play button has the answers. Thank you for listening, and enjoy!
Er Still Wakes the Deep et gyserspil, du bør spille? Still Wakes the Deep er et første-persons gyserspil udviklet af engelske The Chinese Room og udgivet af Sumo Group Limited. The Chinese Room har tidligere skabt de roste spil Dear Esther, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs og Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.

(Folge #126) Sendungshinweis: FM4 Game Podcast 27. Juni 2024, 0-1 Uhr.
If you've taken Linguistics 101, you know what language is. It's a system for conveying meaning through speech. We build words out of sounds, and then complex ideas out of those words. Remarkably, the relationship between the sounds and the meanings they convey is purely arbitrary. Human language consists, in other words, of abstract symbols. Now, of course, there are also sign languages, but these operate in the same way, just in a different medium. This, anyway, is the view of language that has dominated and defined linguistics for many decades. But some think it gets some pretty fundamental things pretty wrong. Some think we need a new picture of language altogether. My guest today is Dr. Neil Cohn. Neil is Associate Professor at the Tilburg Center for Cognition and Communication, in the Netherlands; he is also the director of the Visual Language Lab at Tilburg. For about two decades, Neil has been studying the rich properties of graphic systems—especially comics—and has built an argument that some constitute full-blown languages. His latest book, co-authored with, Joost Schilperoord, is titled A Multimodal Language Faculty. It challenges that longstanding, deeply held view of what language is. Instead, the book argues that the human language capacity combines three different modalities—the vocal modality (as in speech), the bodily modality (as in gesture), and the graphic modality (as in comics and other visual narratives). And each of these modalities is naturally able to support full-blown languages. Here, Neil and I talk about the basic assumptions of modern linguistics and where those assumptions come from. We discuss the idea that there are three expressive modalities that come naturally to humans, with each modality optimized for certain kinds of meaning. We talk about Neil's career, not only as an academic, but as an illustrator. We discuss cross-cultural differences and similarities in comics, and how comics have changed over the last century. And, finally, we consider how Neil's framework challenges current theorizing about the evolution of language. Along the way, Neil and I touch on sign languages and homesign systems, visual style vs visual language, Peircean semiotics, animal tracks, cave art, emoji, upfixes, sand drawing, Manga, the refrain "I can't draw," and the idea that the graphic modality is the only one that's truly unique to our species. After this episode we'll be taking a bit of a summer break, but we'll be posting some old favorites to tide you over. Alright friends, hope you enjoy this one. On to my conversation with Neil Cohn. Enjoy! A transcript of this episode will be available soon. Tune in as Seth Vargas (Movie Friends) rejoins Arthur on 2CC for a breakdown of Blindsight by Peter Watts, the 2006 hard science-fiction and cosmic horror novel that will provide plenty of dense and cerebral material to occupy your brain. The concept of self-awareness and the burden it puts on humanity, an inventively scientific depiction of vampire mythology, and an explanation of the Chinese Room comprise just a few of the talking points for this bookish episode. Jared is a researcher at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence. Until the summer of 2023 he was a lecturer at the University of Washington School of Computer Science. While there he created a class on the philosophy of AI and created and taught an ethics course as well as teaching technical artificial intelligence courses. His satirical novel "The Strength of The Illusion" was published in the summer of 2023. Previous Sentientism guest Mark Solms called it "extraordinary". In Sentientist Conversations we talk about the two most important questions: “what's real?” & “who matters?” Sentientism is "evidence, reason & compassion for all sentient beings." The video of our conversation is here on YouTube. We discuss: 00:00 Clips! 00:56 Welcome 02:23 Jared Intro - AI research, teaching philosophy, AI ethics and AI tech - "What are the right things to do and how do we bring those things about" - "AI is a sandbox... to test out these ideas" - Jared's philosophical novel, "The Strength of the Illusion" "A timely meditation on what happens when artificial intelligence clashes with human stupidity" - "#philosophyofmind ... what it means to think, to learn..." 05:12 What's Real? - "I grew up with a father that derided religion" - A "very atheistic upbringing... in some parts I regret" vs. "more religious community centred upbringings" - Not convinced re: god or spirituality but "that's not to say that I want to discount the feelings of religious experiences" - William James - Irish grandmother "she hates the #catholic church with a passion" - Father is a doctor encountering lots of "anti-science" - Joining a gospel choir at University "I'm not religious but it's a really fun and enlivening way to approach life" - "It's not been my life to combat religion... the 'Four Horsemen'... Dan Dennett, Sam Harris..." - "I think there's value in being kind to each other when you talk about this [religion]" - "Few people are willing to actually debate the tenets of their beliefs... that's the tension between science and religion" - "The unwillingness, by design, to accept alternative hypotheses and test their views is what perpetuates religion" - Spirituality: "I haven't been drawn... it seems a bit like #mysterianism... an appeal to mystery before the facts are out." - "Could we not explain consciousness, morality... I think that we can eventually explain those things through rigourous science" - Rejections of the possibility of explaining consciousness: Searle's Chinese Room, Nagel's "What Is It Like To Be A Bat?"... "These appeals are in a sense spiritual... they're appealing to some sort of mystery" - "That explanation does not need to be a let down -just because we can explain the illusion doesn't mean that the illusion doesn't exist" - "There's a degree of bad blood"... history of scientists denying or avoiding or deriding things because the evidence isn't yet there to enable study (e.g. #behaviourists ignoring mental states) - "Scientists are imperfect and can be mean" - Do AIs have epistemology - JW: "are they learning, can they know things?" - #llms (large language models) like OpenAI's #chatgpt "Do they understand language?" - "They... seem to be able to use language OK... they make errors but humans make errors too" 21:25 What & Who Matters? 44:24 Who Matters? 01:09:25 A Better Future? This week gasp in suspense and delight as Danny and Dr Mike, without any computer assisted aides whatsoever, tightrope walk across the twin philosophical concepts of the Turning Test and the Chinese room! You will hold your breath as the Turning test brings us closer to the idea that the machines could take over and then laugh in relief as Searle arrives to save humanity (for now) with the Chinese Room thought experiment! Yes, the future and your job is safe for a while as Philosophy?WTF?? prove that humanity will win and the machines have no chance... probably.
Today's Episode: ChatGPT is the hot topic of the day and, much like when google first came out, it still feels magic to use. However, it raises several bigger questions to match. Some are practical, but many are a bit deeper. On the practical side: what happens when AI is doing all the work, will enough be left for us? How should we renumerate people to survive, if not for work? On the philosophical side: does AI ACTUALLY understand me? What does it even mean to understand? If AI reaches the point where for all intents and purposes it perfectly mimics (or even improves on) understanding...does it matter that there's no thinking, feeling thing behind the code? I mean, how do I know that anyone else is more than an input -> output machine with a conscious experience inbetween? My own is the only one I can verify afterall. We discuss this and more in our first episode exploring AI, focusing on understanding. We explain the distinction between functional and phenomenal understanding and use thought experiments like The Chinese Room to highlight the point. Support the show: Please leave us a review! Professor J Mark Bishop reflects on the trickiness of language, how LLMs work, why ChatGPT can't understand, the nature of AI and emerging theories of mind.Mark explains what large language models (LLM) do and provides a quasi-technical overview of how they work. He also exposes the complications inherent in comprehending language. Mark calls for more philosophical analysis of how systems such as GPT-3 and ChatGPT replicate human knowledge. Yet, understand nothing. Noting the astonishing outputs resulting from more or less auto-completing large blocks of text, Mark cautions against being taken in by LLM's disarming façade.Mark then explains the basis of the Chinese Room thought experiment and the hotly debated conclusion that computation does not lead to semantic understanding. Kimberly and Mark discuss the nature of learning through the eyes of a child and whether computational systems can ever be conscious. Mark describes the phenomenal experience of understanding (aka what it feels likes). And how non-computational theories of mind may influence AI development. Finally, Mark reflects on whether AI will be good for the few or the many.Professor J Mark Bishop is the Professor of Cognitive Computing (Emeritus) at Goldsmith College, University of London and Scientific Advisor to FACT360.A transcript of this episode is here.
Join comedians Rachel Fairburn and Kiri Pritchard-McLean as they explore a shared passion, serial killers. Each episode the pair will talk all things murder and macabre and have a right laugh doing it. Episode 97 has a few parts and takes a look at Charles Manson and The Manson Family. Part 4 is by far the most brutal episode as Rachel and Kiri go through the murders committed by the family. This episode is extra special too as it comes from "The Chinese Room". Just a heads up, Kiri does yelp at the end out of genuine fear so mentally prepare for that.

YT: https://youtu.be/_KVAzAzO5HU Panel: Dr. Tim Scarfe, Dr. Keith Duggar Guests: Prof. J. Mark Bishop, Francois Chollet, Prof. David Chalmers, Dr. Joscha Bach, Prof. Karl Friston, Alexander Mattick, Sam Roffey The Chinese Room Argument was first proposed by philosopher John Searle in 1980. It is an argument against the possibility of artificial intelligence (AI) – that is, the idea that a machine could ever be truly intelligent, as opposed to just imitating intelligence. The argument goes like this: Imagine a room in which a person sits at a desk, with a book of rules in front of them. This person does not understand Chinese. Someone outside the room passes a piece of paper through a slot in the door. On this paper is a Chinese character. The person in the room consults the book of rules and, following these rules, writes down another Chinese character and passes it back out through the slot. To someone outside the room, it appears that the person in the room is engaging in a conversation in Chinese. In reality, they have no idea what they are doing – they are just following the rules in the book. The Chinese Room Argument is an argument against the idea that a machine could ever be truly intelligent. It is based on the idea that intelligence requires understanding, and that following rules is not the same as understanding. in this detailed investigation into the Chinese Room, Consciousness and Syntax vs Semantics, we interview luminaries J.Mark Bishop and Francois Chollet and use unreleased footage from our interviews with David Chalmers, Joscha Bach and Karl Friston. We also cover material from Walid Saba and interview Alex Mattick from Yannic's Discord. This is probably my favourite ever episode of MLST. I hope you enjoy it! With Keith Duggar. Note that we are using clips from our unreleased interviews from David Chalmers and Joscha Bach -- we will release those shows properly in the coming weeks. Filmmaker Kogonada adapts a heady sci-fi story written by Alexander Weinstein into a thoughtful, melancholic piece about the nature of existence, artificial intelligence, and the ethics of personhood. In episode 241, Luke & James consider the “Chinese Room thought experiment,” debate Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, the power of immigrants being able to name themselves, the opening credit dance, depression in a relative utopia, Colin Farrell's lack of emotion, the difference between written and video essays, and the value of historical preservation vs. violating privacy. They end by casting their votes on which was better: the short story or the movie!
