This episode is a special one. I sat down with the inspiring Roxanne Glaser—artist, educator, and creator of whimsical nature-inspired doodles—to talk about what it really means to live a creative life.We dive into some deeply personal and powerful topics, like how Roxanne used art to process profound grief after experiencing unimaginable loss and how her creative practice became a tool for healing and self-discovery. We talk about the challenges of having too many choices in creativity (I know I've felt that paralysis!) and how gentle self-discipline and limitations can actually set us free to create more authentically. This conversation is packed with takeaways about building a sustainable creative practice, embracing the seasons of your life, and creating art for yourself—not for external validation.I've also created something special for you to deepen the impact of this episode: the Creative Warrior Activation Sheet, a guided exercise to help you connect with your inner creative warrior and discover how to embrace your unique creative journey. Kellee is overjoyed to introduce all of you to Jackie Schomburg, a workshop leader whose passion in life is helping others get unstuck from various aspects of their lives, create authentic art, and allow people to get out of their own ways. Jackie transitioned from the corporate world when she could feel herself falling victim to the hustle and stress of the corporate world until she was able to break free and pursue her passion of approaching a business that supports vulnerability and showing up as yourself. In online businesses today, social media plays a vital role in building our creative pursuits, which brought Jackie into the Build It Remarkable program and she has come away with a new comprehension of how to market herself to her audience without feeling sleazy or salesy. She has been leaning into showing up more as herself, embracing building her list, and marketing herself knowing that she has a brilliant gift to offer to others.About Jackie Schomburg: Jackie Schomburg is a self-taught abstract mixed media artist, and teacher, living with her husband and three young children in the Chicago suburbs. Her current abstract paintings are focused on identity and the tension between freedom and the need to belong. In addition to exploring this in her own art, Jackie also teaches workshops blending art making and journaling.Jackie's Brave Art & Creative Wellness workshops focus on the process of making art, rather than the finished product itself. Participating artists learn to use mark-making, collage, or grid journals to slow down, de-stress, and stay present in the moment. This process is a highly effective self-care tool that can help calm anxiety, promote positive mental health, boost self-confidence, encourage self-expression, unblock creativity, and help process trauma in a safe space. No artistic experience is necessary.Learn more about Jackie on her websiteConnect with her on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and Pinterest!Sign up for Jackie's newsletterJoin the FREE Brave Art & Creative Wellness Collage Workshop!Tune in to Made Remarkable and uncover the transformative potential that awaits your creative pursuits. Way back in 2019, (seems like ages ago, right?), we had Valerie Bachman as a guest to talk about sound healing in the first season of our podcast. Much has changed in the world since then, and also in Valerie's practice. She joins us in this episode to discuss the power of the subconscious mind, Emotion Code and Body Code, NLP and her amazing healing sanctuary space in Austin, Mandala Hills. Highlights: Mandala Hills continues to grow as a community based around nature, wellness and connection. What is Emotion Code and Body Code? Do these practices work remotely? Valerie walks us through the process -how it enables her to pinpoint the source of an issue. Most things that are out of alignment are due to what one key thing? Are misalignments always due to experiences in your life? Can Emotion Code & Body Code heal or clear into other generations, beyond just the person? Why is it so powerful to do healing work on the subconscious level? The value of both client and practitioner to flow with a session, releasing rigid expectations of what they want to happen. How does NLP work? Our incredible ability to harness our imagination for healing. The two paths that people tend to live from: either running from pain or towards pleasure. Many people don't realize they're constantly focusing on what they don't want. Valuable NLP practices anyone can do, like pattern interrupt and modeling The soaking culture in geothermal pools. Valerie Bachman is a passionate holistic therapist specializing in various modalities including sound, energy, body, mind and subconscious. She has completed Hatha Yoga and Childrens Teacher Training at Yoga Yoga, Austin, TX, attained Master Reiki Level, Certified Hypnosis Consultant, Certified Neuro Linguistic Programming, and Emotion Code and Body Code. Can you be " Addicted to Love"? Sure you can - and according to Robert Palmer, it's great. But is it though? Edited down from 4 hours of discussions spread over 2 days David Greenleaf, Trauma Recovery Specialist and Leela Davis, Creative Wellness coach discuss the pitfalls of what many 12 Step groups refer to as "Sex and Love Addiction." We discuss our own harrowing tales of Love gone wrong, due to the misfortunes and misunderstandings about healthy relating we learned from our family dynamics. We point out that "co-dependancy" is a prominent feature in how Western Cultures have trained us to form romantic relationships for both men and women. We even cover the science of WHY addictions form in the area of romantic and sexual relationships. And no show would be complete without us sharing a number of different strategies to identify dysfunction in our relationships and learn how to heal ourselves so we can form new healthy relationships. As David says in the show - Strap in for a wild ride!" If the term "love addiction" seemed a curiosity to you before. You will be able to give a TED talk on the topic by the end of the show, especially if you start digging into the extensive resources mentioned in the episode. What does the Global Wellness Summit have in common with one of the biggest music stars in history? Colombian Reggaeton Superstar J Balvin has been very open and honest about his struggles with anxiety and depression — as well as the wellness practices he uses to find relief. To that end, he's co-founded the development of OYE, an app designed to help everyone live better, happier lives. And, like GWS, his team relied heavily on the studies and research conducted by the Global Wellness Institute (GWI). In GWI's 2020 “https://globalwellnessinstitute.org/industry-research/defining-the-mental-wellness-economy-2020/ (Defining the Mental Wellness Economy Report),” GWI had this to say about mental wellness: “It's more than the absence of mental illness — it's the active process of moving from languishing to flourishing. It also helps shift our perspective from stigma to shared humanity. It grows out of grassroots, consumer-driven movements and is multi-dimensional, holistic, and personal.” Clearly, OYE and GWI are aligned in their vision and mission around mental wellness. In this episode, we're speaking to J Balvin's partners and co-founders at OYE: Happiness activist and CEO of OYE Mario Chamorro, and Social Impact Executive Patrick Dowd. Their shared goal is to remove the stigma associated with mental health and to teach people across the Americas how to channel mental challenges into artistic endeavors — what they call “creative wellness.” OYE is the next generation disruption in the wellness world. It is an ecosystem — starting with an app — that embodies and brings emotional and creative wellness to the world, with the purpose of helping the world feel better. In a Health Harris poll, 40% of Hispanic Americans and 29% of Black Americans rated their mental health as poor. 62% of Hispanic respondents say they know several people battling mental illness, but only 41% were committed to speaking openly about it. J Balvin's home country of Colombia is famous for pioneering magical realism, where the line between fantasy and reality is blurred. While many might see it as nothing more than a fairy tale, for Colombians, the magic is real. It informs what is possible in their lives. OYE seems rooted in this belief in magical realism and the possibility of transformation, and when you listen to our inspiring podcast guests you will believe, too, that together we can help the world feel better. This season our theme has been creativity. We tend to think of creativity as art, music, dance and often designate being creative as an afterthought - something we allow ourselves to indulge in after we've done our real work. In our school system, our focus has shifted to exploring educational systems rooted in STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. Notice which topic got left out of that clever acronym. There is no art in STEM. And yet, in the interviews we've conducted this season, we've heard over and over again that some of the world's most innovative thought-leaders and scientists have a creative practice of some kind that supports them in being creative in their field. My guest today is Flora Bowley. Flora is an artist, retreat facilitator, creative catalyst, and author of five books: The Art of Aliveness, Brave Intuitive Painting, Creative Revolution, Fresh Paint, and Earth is Holding You. Her colorful and layered paintings are also used to design calendars, cards, planners, journals, fabric, and unique product lines sold around the world. Flora encourages us to look at the art of our life, to explore how we can use creativity to unlock and unbind ourselves from old ways of being and thinking. I hope that this interview will have you contemplating the role that creativity plays in your daily practice. I hope that you'll explore new ways to break free from the trap of hard metrics that puts you in boxes instead of inviting you to create your own world. Without creativity, science is just repetition. Propagating the same ideas over and over again. Limiting the questions we ask and closing us off to the possibility of finding the elegant solutions to our challenges. Without art, we can't tap into our creativity. If art changes everything, the very first thing it changes is our fundamental relationship with ourselves and our ability to move from inspiration to fulfillment, from idea to innovative solution. Join me for this powerful conversation as we explore the role of creativity in transforming the world. Flora Bowley (pronounced bowl-lee) is an artist, author, and gentle guide whose creative process and soulful approach to living have touched thousands of lives. In her most recent book, The Art of Aliveness, Flora explores the vast ways in which the principles of creativity can serve as fuel for a more alive and awakened way of living in the world – no paintbrushes required. Find The Art of Aliveness at https://florabowley.com/books/ or at https://www.amazon.com/Art-Aliveness-Creative-Return-Matters/dp/1950253104/ Flora believes that creative expression is waiting to unfold within every person who is brave enough to trust, let go, and explore, and it is through this kind of heartfelt expression that truths are revealed, lives transform, and new worlds are born. She lives and creates in Portland, OR. If you would like to learn more about Flora visit https://florabowley.com/ Listeners can receive a 90-minute class with teachings from Flora's book, The Art of Aliveness, as well as a selection of featured videos from her online painting courses. In this inspiring conversation, we talked about so many things, including alignment, slowing down, flexible self care, and most of all, following your own inner voice to follow what’s right for you personally. TOPICS DISCUSSED • Shifting paradigms within the business industry and rewilding with creative, authentic, unique approaches that embody who we are • Natalie’s background in art and philosophy, and how she discovered that she’s “good at business” • Natalie’s journey into online business and how that’s developed since her first business, an MLM • Having the audacity to try something risky and believe that it can happen, while also planning for the unexpected • The benefits (on both Natalie and her clients) of being process-oriented • The benefits of slowing down, and how social media reinforces the opposite • Being a workaholic and ingrained beliefs about work inherently being hard • Dismantling the idea that worth is connected to work • How “following the rules” hurts our creativity, and giving ourselves permission to do things our own way • Natalie’s biggest personal hurdle • Risking changing the stability of a norm • Navigating how to make space for something new • What Natalie’s daily alignment practice looks like and how she adapts it to fit her needs, balancing structure and flexibility • Giving ourselves what we need in an intentional way, and self-compassionately adjusting as needed • Giving ourselves permission to have our own preferences and learn our own identities • Plant communication, wildcrafting, and plant allies, which has affected how Natalie views her own energy cycles • Creating sacred rituals out of any action to infuse them with meaning • Self care as soul nourishment, not as a means to an end • Nature and embodied movement as self care • Natalie’s advice for business owners who want to be more intentional about seeking fulfillment in all areas of their lives RESOURCES MENTIONED Dance Church Minneapolis MORE FROM NATALIE Website Instagram SoulSistersOnFire Facebook group MORE FROM LEXIE Alexandria Astrology MORE FROM REBECCA Rebecca, the Pianist Coaching for Creative Wellness
Such a wonderful chat with Courtney Cosgriff about what to plant in your garden to raise your vitality and to help pollinators thrive. We discuss different approaches to beekeeping and how to do so more holistically. We also discuss ways to honor and celebrate the bees. “Honeybee Herbals is a business that is dedicated to providing Earth centered healing and education in the hopes of restoring our connection to the natural world. Honeybee Herbals is inspired by the divine connection between honeybees and plants, and harnesses this inspiration to heal communities through empowering individuals with tools to heal themselves. I came to the world of herbalism, beekeeping, and earth centered traditions because like many others my heart ached to see not only what we were doing to this earth but also how much of ourselves we had lost in the process. In 2011 I had two near death experiences both car accidents, the first one led me to travel through Oregon where I met a beekeeper and the second one was caused by a wasp stinging me in the eye. It took some time but eventually I came to the conclusion that these and the many other honeybee related events that followed were not simple coincidences but rather signs pointing me to a deeper calling. So I listened and began a long journey of studying with various mentors until forming my own path and relationship to honeybees centered around a deep reverence and fascination with the history, myth, and magic surrounding them. In addition to beekeeping I am passionate about education and activism on behalf of pollinator conservation. In the winter of 2016 I was hired as the resident beekeeper and educator at The GrowHaus in Denver. Since then I’ve taught in many of their education programs geared towards various age groups. I think the honeybees have many valuable things to teach us and I am passionate about sharing their wisdom with many. When I fell in love with the Honeybee I fell in love with the world. My journey as an Herbalist and Nutritionist also began with the honeybees. When I planted my first garden for the honeybees I knew very little about the magic the plant kingdom possesses. With time I became mesmerized by the plants watching the honeybees travel from flower to flower the thyme, lavender, sages, and hyssop with their beautiful flowers and intoxicating aromas. I was captivated and inspired by this beautiful connection between honeybees and plants. In 2012 I began school at Metropolitan State University of Denver. It was during this time that I was experiencing a lot of health issues myself while also seeing those I love most suffer deeply. I started to take classes centered around holistic therapies and I was captivated. I didn’t grow up in a household that exposed me to these therapies but when I found them I feel I found a big part of myself. I graduated from Metropolitan State University in 2016 with my Bachelor’s of Science in Integrative Healthcare. After graduating I wanted to dive deeply into plant medicine and nutrition so I continued my studies at The Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism. It was here where I really fine tuned my vision as well as going on a deep journey of personal healing and discovery. In June of 2018 I graduated from this school as a Certified Clinical Herbalist and Nutritionist and Flower Essence Practitioner with over 1,900 hours in clinical training and education. I also hold a Permaculture Design Certification from the Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute and an Herbal Wilderness First Responder Certification from The Human Path.It is my vision to utilize my education and skills to bring earth centered healing and education to communities around the world in hopes of helping to restore the balance between humans and the earth through finding healing and balance within ourselves.”-Counrtney Cosgriff from www.honeybeeherbals.coA reminder to Please consider supporting local artists, musicians, healers, farmers and herbalists when possible. It’s a universal truth: In order to be at your creative best, you need to be at your physical best. It’s something that I’ve heard across so many mediums. Everyone from photographers to writers say that they’re more productive, more creative and more inspired when they’re feeling good. I’ve found that it’s true and I’ll bet that you have, too. When we don’t feel right, we just don’t get much done. The hard part is, photography isn’t necessarily an athletic activity. Sure, there will be times when you’re roaming in forests or fields, lugging heavy gear bags around and all the rest. And there will be more times when you’re parked in the driver’s seat of your car, driving a long distance to get to your photography destination. You’ll spend hours and hours at your computer, hunched over whatever project you are in the midst of post-processing. You’ll spend yet more hours on the internet, researching and learning. And there will also be offline learning, times when you’re sitting on the sofa, reading a book. So there are periods of activity and periods where we’re relatively sedentary. From that standpoint, physical wellness can be a tough thing to achieve. But, it isn’t all about the exercise. That’s part of it, certainly, but there’s more to it than that if you want to be at your creative best. Let me lay out some of the things you can do to make sure your creative mind is working as it should. Jez Smith is a photographer. He as created arresting images of world-famous talent such as: Christy Turlington, Cate Blanchette, Serena Williams, Miranda Kerr, Megan Gale and Jennifer Hawkins. And he has shot for publications like: Vogue Italia, Hapers Bizarr UK, Instyle, Elle, GQ and The Australian's Wish Magazine (my personal favourite). When it comes to shooting high-end fashion photography in Australia, Jez Smith has a reputation for being one of the best in his field. Why then, after almost 20 years building that reputation did he decide to move afield and relocate back to London for fresh start? This episode explores a theme that has come up a lot with my guests of late, and that is self-preservation & self care - which is not only necessary for those looking to forge a career doing what they love. It’s as important – if not more important – for those who are already working within the field of their passions - because your livelihood depends on your ability to create. This episode is all about stepping back and taking stock - which is not a ‘one time only’ occurrence. Over the course of your creative career, you may need to do this on multiple occasions. It was interesting for me to be reminded that no matter how successful you are are you still need to be responsible for your well-being. I’m really appreciative of Jez’s openness in talking about issues that were very personal to him – this is a great conversation for anyone who is wrestling with not only the question of HOW to do what they love for a living - But WHY.
What does it take to make work that is excites people on a national and international level? What are you prepared to do in order to make work you are truly proud of? My guest this week is theatre writer and director Declan Greene. He has a body of work that spans every major theatre institution in the country. He got his start in Melbourne’s literal and figurative underground - staging plays in underground carparks and building sites - and is now of the best regarded theatre makers of his generation. But that doesn’t mean he’s lost his edge. Declan's work still crosses genres and formats and merges high-brow and low-brow culture, queer performance art, multimedia, in-jokes, bad language, pop art and surrealist absurdity - but always with a view to comment on society or humanity or the profanity of culture - or all of the above. His recent direction of Blackie Blackie Brown - written by Nakia Lui and currently showing at the STC - is no exception. It melds Japanese manga iconography with Tarantino themes for a tale of aboriginal revenge on white-settler injustice. The play is simultaneously visually astounding, shocking, thought-provoking funny and tapping of some current-day zeitgeist that makes it feel truly progressive. Next up, in July this year, the MTC will stage Declan's adaptation of the Lars Von Trier film, Melancholia. And it is Declan’s tenacity that I am most admiring of. In the decade, he has amassed a huge body of work - averaging the release of two plays a year. When I sat down with Declan for this interview last year, around the time of the release of his play The Homosexuals, I wanted to find out what his creative process looks like in a practical sense - how does he manage to average multiple major works in a year… and before someone was paying him to do so, how did create a lifestyle in which he could get good in the first place? This episode is great for anyone looking to get active in a their ideal career space by pooling passion and resources amongst your creative community. There’s never been a better time to ‘screw it - just do it’.
