Bilbo wakes up from his nap just in time to pass the Old Took; Alan and Shawn wake up from our nap just in time to pass the two-hour mark. Join The Man of the West and The Lord of the Mark as Sam finally figures out where Frodo is going in the last of our three episodes on The Grey Havens - and the final episode of our six-season journey through The Lord of the Rings. Gildor makes an appearance; Frodo makes a sacrifice; Sam makes the long journey home in silence (where the nights are gettin' strange since he's gone). We fanboy over Círdan, discover there was room for Shadowfax, and talk about a most Anglo-Saxon ending. Also, Bilbo and Frodo have words for Celebrimbor.

In light of the recent U.S. celebration of Thanksgiving, it seemed fitting to discuss the parallel cases of hospitality offered to Frodo by Gildor and Faramir, which both give Frodo many reasons to be thankful. Join your host, Ken Pilot, as he interviews Steve Madden, Founder and Creative Chief of his eponymous Footwear and Accessories brand, Steve Madden.Key Highlights:Steve Madden's Early Career: Steve Madden's career in retail began when he got a job at a shoe store in Cedarhurst, Long Island. He got the job by mentioning he was Johnny Madden's little brother, and the owner hired him on the spot. This marked the beginning of his journey in the shoe business.Creative Influence in Shoe Business: Steve started working in the shoe business during a creative period, particularly in men's shoes. Platform shoes, especially for men, were in trend during the mid-'70s. The store owner, whom he looked up to, fancied himself as a shoe designer, and this environment fueled Steve's interest in the creative side of the shoe business.Mentorship at Gildor: After working at Toulouse, Steve joined Gildor, a well-known shoe retailer. Larry, the son of the owner, became a significant mentor for Steve. He emphasized attention to detail, such as maintaining perfect displays, which left a lasting impact on Steve's approach to business. The Influence of Sobriety: Steve's journey towards sobriety played a pivotal role in his success. He mentions that getting sober was one of the most significant factors in his achievements. It allowed him to focus and make better decisions for his business.Impact of Jordan Belfort: Steve acknowledges that meeting Jordan Belfort, also known as the Wolf of Wall Street, had both positive and negative consequences. Jordan's entrepreneurial spirit provided encouragement to Steve. However, the financial dealings with Jordan and his associates led to legal troubles and eventually Steve going to prison. Despite this, Steve recognizes the role Jordan played in his journey.Appreciation for Teamwork: Steve emphasizes the importance of having a strong team. He credits his success to the people around him, highlighting the pivotal role of his childhood friend, Jamie Carson, who became CEO in his absence and played a crucial part in protecting the company during a challenging period.International Business: Steve Madden's brother, John Madden, played a significant role in building the international business of Steve Madden. John's skill set, including his charm and ability to build relationships, complemented Steve's more hands-on approach to business. International business has experienced tremendous growth, expanding to approximately 50 countries and showing substantial potential for further expansion. Steve Madden is an advocate for using business and trade as a means to foster international relations and promote prosperity. He believes that trading with other nations can lead to mutual understanding and peace..The Steve Madden Group: owns several other brands, including Betsy Johnson, Dolce Vita, BB Dakota, Big Buddha, Blondo, and Greats. Steve Madden is open to further acquisitions, particularly in the apparel sector, with a focus on good management and innovative ideas.Steve Madden is an entrepreneur, an award-winning designer, and a business titan whose eponymous company is currently worth over 3 billion dollars. He is also a recovering addict and a devoted family man. Over the past thirty years, the provocative shoe designer built a booming brand and nearly lost it all to “The Wolf of Wall Street,” only to rebound by giving back and creating a global empire. In 1990, with a mere $1,100 in the bank, Madden followed his intuition and set out to create the next big thing: a company able to anticipate consumer needs and subsequently deliver collections that were both cutting edge and highly saleable. Channeling his creative energy to produce a variety of silhouettes and vibrant styles in his Queens-based factory, quickly his dream became reality and the Steve Madden brand was born.30 years later, with over 200 stores across the globe, the acquisition of notable brands such as Dolce Vita, Betsey Johnson, and Blondo, to name a few, standout collaborations with stars including Sydney Sweeney, Nessa Barret, Cardi B, Winnie Harlow, Ja Rule, Keyshia Cole, and Kendall and Kylie Jenner, the designer and entrepreneur continues the hustle. While Madden can recognize success, he is mindful of his humble beginning and support he has received on his journey to achievement. As a recovering addict as well as someone who has learned to manage his ADD, Madden is an active philanthropist and mentor who supports several organizations that help those in need of a second chance.A native New Yorker, Steve currently resides in Manhattan with his children, and is more present than ever at his company's Long Island City headquarters, the various showrooms throughout Manhattan and his namesake stores worldwide.

For this episode of Sustainably LB, I got to sit with Rose Gildor, Founder, Owner and Creator of OA Shoppe. OA Shoppe is a preloved, circular fashion centered business with a unique concept located here in Omaha, NE in the Millard neighborhood. Rose's shop is built on the rent-a-rack model where individuals rent space in the shop per week and essentially curate their racks to speak to those that have a similar style or those wanting to experiment with their wardrobe. And while rack rental is the focus of OA Shoppe, Rose has a passion for community and hosts a variety of events that connect those who share a common interest - preloved fashion. I am so honored that I got the chance to chat with Rose and discuss the pain points, as well as the reasons to celebrate the strides the resale and preloved fashion community is making. It always helps when you focus on the solution rather than the problem. Fashion is cyclical and we continue to see trends coming full circle and that is a big reason as to why the preloved market has true staying power. And arguably, many times the styles and quality were way better the first time around.I hope that you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed our conversation. Although Frodo has good reasons for his slowness—he doesn't want to create gossip—he is also feeling reluctant to leave the Shire. He is inclined to wait until his 50th birthday. Gandalf agrees to this, and advises Frodo to travel toward the Elven realm of Rivendell, ruled by Elrond. Frodo announces he is selling Bag End to the Sackville-Bagginses, his unlikable cousins, and moving to Buckland—in a different part of the Shire. The townsfolk find this surprising, but chalk it up to his various eccentricities. One day, Gandalf announces he must leave and investigate something worrisome he has learned about, but tells Frodo he will be back for the birthday party. However, he does not show up, and Frodo decides to move forward with the plan without him. Frodo celebrates his birthday with his good friends, and then says good-bye to Bag End. Merry and another friend, Fredegar Bolger, go on ahead to get Frodo's new house ready. Later, walking along the road in a melancholy way, Frodo overhears a strange voice asking Sam's father, the Gaffer, about "Mr. Baggins." Soon after, Sam, Pippin, and Frodo set out. After a few days on the road, they hear another traveler coming up behind them. Frodo, feeling wary, decides they should hide and let the traveler go past. Once hidden, the four hobbits watch as a large black horse appears, carrying a figure clothed in a black robe and hood. Sniffing sounds come from inside the hood, and Frodo feels an urge to put on the Ring. He resists the urge, and the rider moves on. Sam reveals that this rider is the one that asked his father about Mr. Baggins. The hobbits decide to continue on, more cautiously. Later that evening, the black-cloaked rider overtakes them again, and Frodo once again feels the urge to put on the Ring. A company of Elves happens by, however, and the rider retreats. The leader of the company of Elves, Gildor Inglorion, recognizes Frodo, and allows the hobbits to travel with them after hearing about the Black Riders. The hobbits stay up late talking and eating with the Elves, and Gildor is uneasy about pursuing Black Riders, who he believes are servants of the Enemy, and that Gandalf did not show up when expected. He advises Frodo to leave for Rivendell without delay. The Fellowship of the Ring: Written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Soundtrack composed by Howard Shore. Audiobook narrated, produced, and edited by Phil Dragash. Art by Jian Guo.

Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about Oriana's choice of topic: the Shire. The homeland of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins and many of Middle-earth's hobbits in general, and the entry point for nearly every reader to Tolkien's imaginative geographical and creative landscape, the Shire often seems like an idyllic and nostalgic English utopia, an untroubled land where the beer is good, the family trees are all spelled out carefully and there's not much to worry about aside from the occasional wolf or Orc raid over the centuries. Yet Tolkien himself said he didn't view it as a utopia, and both as sociopolitical organization and as physical location, the Shire has more going on with it than might be seen at first glance, even by some of its most well-known inhabitants. What is the sense of history among the hobbits of the Shire, and how do they regard their land and their sense of who they are? What does the Shire being a seemingly safe place truly reveal when the Scouring is necessary at the end of the grand story? Who are the authorities, if there are any, that keep this seeming anarchist fantasy going as a functioning concern, and does that cover monetary issues as well? And is that the only linguistically blessed fox in the Shire, much less Middle-earth as a whole?SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle. You're listening to Tea with Tolkien, a Podcast for the Hobbit at Heart.Join us as we chat about the works and faith of J.R.R. Tolkien, and strive to carry a little piece of Middle-Earth into our own daily lives. This is the second in a seven-part book club series on The Lord of the Rings. These episodes will be released on the first of each month from now through March to accompany our Book Club as we're reading The Lord of the Rings! If you'd like to join our book club, you can visit www.teawithtolkien.com/book-club.Book Two Recap: Major Themes You Do Not Have to Go Alone: In this book, we see the formation and departure of the Fellowship of the Ring. Finally, the quest has fully begun. While Frodo is willing to take the burden of the Ring onto himself, he acknowledges that he doesn't even know where to begin in terms of getting it to Mordor. And Elrond understands that he cannot go alone. However, he doesn't send him forth with a host of great warriors -- rather he sends him in a small group meant to represent all the peoples of Middle-Earth, a group formed largely around friendship! So we see the theme of Fellowship carrying through into Book II. The life-saving, life-giving virtue of friendship. Rivendell & Lothlorien: In this book we are introduced to two of the great homes of Elvendom in Middle-Earth, Rivendell and Lothlorien. Within the bounds of these two realms, the world feels different entirely. It has been preserved and protected by the power of the Elves, and serves as a refuge for those who visit. Heroic Leadership Requires Sacrifice: Looking at Gandalf and Aragorn specifically, we see in this book the way that great leadership requires sacrifice. In Gandalf's case, he was willing to give up his own life to protect the Fellowship from the Balrog. In Aragorn's case, we see that he is willing to deny his own desires -- both to stay in Rivendell and to go straight to Gondor -- for what he realizes are the greater good of the Fellowship. The Protection of Elbereth: Despite being referenced several times by hobbits and elves even in these first two books, the character of Elbereth remains relatively unexplained throughout The Lord of the Rings. However, with a little help from The Silmarillion, we can begin to understand her more clearly. Elbereth Gilthoniel is the Sindarin name for Varda, one of the Ainur and Queen of the Valar. As the creator of the stars and most beloved by the Elves, the name of Elbereth is invoked in times of distress, darkness, and great need. Her beauty is beyond measure or description, and she is feared and hated most by Melkor. In Three is Company, Gildor says to Frodo, “May Elbereth protect you!”; in A Knife in the Dark, Frodo cries out, “O Elbereth! Gilthoniel!” as he is stabbed by the Morgul blade. And as we journey deeper into the story of The Lord of the Rings, her name will be invoked many more times—keep an eye out for it. I'll see you over on our Discord chat for Book II! I hope this episode was helpful and will spark some good discussion. If you aren't a part of our discord server yet, you can join by signing up for our Book Club with your email address at www.teawithtolkien.com/book-club. I'll be back on November 1st to begin our discussion of Book III, which is the first half of The Two Towers. Discord Chat Discussion Prompts:Keep in mind these are just meant to spark discussion and you don't have to answer every one of these! Thoughts on The Council of Elrond: Did you learn anything new? How has reading the Council of Elrond in light of the Silmarillion changed your perspective (if this isn't your first time reading it)? Discuss Saruman's plans as recounted in the Council of Elrond. Do you think he is lying to Gandalf, or do you think he truly believes that he can still achieve his original purpose in the end? Do Balrogs have wings? The Elves as “Perilous and Fair”? Discuss the different approaches towards Galadriel from the different members of the Fellowship as they enter into Lothlorien, especially that of Gimli and Boromir. How has Gimli's heart softened towards the Elves? At what point did this change occur, and how is its timing significant? How does Galadriel's gift to Gimli mark the beginning of a renewed friendship between Dwarves and Elves? Of all of Galadriel's gifts, which stood out to you as the most interesting or meaningful? How did each gift correspond to its recipient, equipping them according to their needs? Have you noticed any other characters in The Lord of the Rings thus far that remind you of Mary? If so, who and why? Thoughts on Boromir: Do you feel sympathetic towards him? Do you find him relatable?

为你读英语美文 · 第408期 主播:永清坐标:北京The Lord of the RingsThe Fellowship of the RingChapter 3 Three is CompanyIn a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power-the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron's evil dominion. The Fellowship of the Ring第3章Three is Company打动我的一些文字,作者是J.R.R. Kyle and Dan, from The Babylon Bee, along with Jonathan Watson, from TheOneRing.Com where you can join a growing fellowship of Tolkien fans, get to one of their favorite chapters of The Lord of the Rings: In The House Of Tom Bombadil! Who the heck is this weird guy dancing and singing in the old forest? What did Tolkien say about who Tom is and what does he have to teach us? How is this detour in the old forest to Tom’s house essential to the story? Tom Bombadil is awesome and by the end of this episode, we think you’ll agree. Chapter 7 summary: The hobbits enter the house and seem to be enchanted by Goldberry. Frodo even bursts into song when he sees her. Frodo asks her who Tom Bombadil really is and she tells him that Tom is simply Tom: the master of wood, water and hill. He has no desire to own anything and he has no fear. Frodo asks Tom if he had heard their cry for help or if he had just happened to come by at the right time. Tom said that he had been expecting them. They eat and go to bed. The Hobbits all have nightmares, except Sam. Frodo dreams of man on a tower taken away by a large eagle and then black riders, Pippin is back in the willow tree, and Merry thinks he is about to be drowned. The next day it rains, so Tom begins to tell them stories. He tells them about the old forest and the trees like Old Man Willow. He warns them about the barrow downs and the spirits. The Hobbits lose track of time. Frodo once again tries to find out who Tom Bombadil is by asking him directly. Tom asks Frodo to show him the Ring. He is completely unconcerned about the ring or Sauron. He teaches them a rhyme to call him for help and tells them they must leave the next day. Topics Discussed Who the heck is Tom? "Tom was a paradoxical creature, one moment defeating ancient forces with hardly an effort, the next capering and singing nonsensical songs." "Eldest, that's what I am... Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn... He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless - before the Dark Lord came from Outside." “He is Master of wood, water, and hill.” But he doesn’t own it! “That would be a burden,” says Goldberry. He also “just is as you have seen him” and is “not afraid.” Tom always seems preoccupied about his own business and seems to forget the needs of his guests. ‘Tom, Tom! your guests are tired, and you had near forgotten! Who the heck is Goldberry? She is full of joy and laughter and is described as “enthroned.” The paradox of Bombadil in that he is good but is not concerned with the shadow vs the Hobbits "you cannnot shut the world out forever" Kyle’s tweet thread about his favorite passage in Lord of the Rings: (though he reserves his right to say that a lot over the course of this show) Dan thinks it is odd that Tom just happens to have a feast set, four mattresses, four pairs of hobbit slippers, vessels of cold and hot water just waiting for the hobbits in the guest room. Tom says he was waiting for them. “Farmer Maggot, whom he seemed to regard as a person of more importance than they had imagined. ‘There’s earth under his old feet, and clay on his fingers; wisdom in his bones, and both his eyes are open,’ said Tom. It was also clear that Tom had dealings with the Elves, and it seemed that in some fashion, news had reached him from Gildor concerning the flight of Frodo.” Our zeitgeist and its need for big, epic heroes, and its intolerance of quirkiness and things that are uncool. Whether the morning and evening of one day or of many days had passed Frodo could not tell. He did not feel either hungry or tired, only filled with wonder. ‘Who are you, Master?’ he asked. ‘Eh, what?’ said Tom sitting up, and his eyes glinting in the gloom. ‘Don’t you know my name yet? That’s the only answer. Tell me, who are you, alone, yourself and nameless? But you are young and I am old. Eldest, that’s what I am. Mark my words, my friends: Tom was here before the river and the trees; Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn. He made paths before the Big People, and saw the little People arriving. He was here before the Kings and the graves and the Barrow-wights. When the Elves passed westward, Tom was here already, before the seas were bent. He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless – before the Dark Lord came from Outside.’ Tom holds up the superweapon of Sauron and laughs at it like it’s child’s play. And can even make it disappear??? Tom can see invisible Frodo? Some stuff from Silmarillion is mentioned like Valar and Maiar and hopefully the slides on the video help. Tom doesn’t fit any established category in Middle-Earth. Is Tom Bombadil right to be unconcerned with fighting evil? From the heart of the Shire, through the depths of Moria, to the ends of Middle-Earth, it’s The Babylon Bee Reads The Lord Of The Rings! In this episode of The Babylon Bee Reads, Kyle and Dan are joined by Jonathan Watson, creator alongside his two friends of TheOneRing.Com, which can also be followed on Facebook. Kyle, Dan, and Jon continue their fellowship in reading through The Fellowship of the Ring, this time in Chapter 3 Three’s Company, where three hobbits encounter black riders and elves in their very own Shire. The story so far: The Shadow of the past summary- Gandalf has told Frodo all about The Ring and that he is no longer safe in the Shire. Samwise is recruited to accompany Frodo. In this chapter: Frodo has to slip out of the Shire unnoticed so he hatches a plan of pretending to move to a new house in Crickhollow beyond/near Buckland where his Brandybuck side lives while the plan is really to make for Rivendell. Plans to leave on his 50th birthday Life lesson: “What is to be my quest? Bilbo went to find a treasure, there and back again; but I go to lose one, and not return, as far as I can see.’ ‘But you cannot see very far,’ said Gandalf. Something spooks Gandalf who leaves suddenly to try to get news/ he tells Frodo to not use the ring! He promises to be back in time for the birthday party and to set off with Frodo (this does not happen- dang wizards). Frodo’s wine is not included in the sale of Bag End to the dreaded S.-B.s. and does not offer her any tea when Lobelia comes with an inventory list. Frodo leaves for a leisurely night hike to set out with Sam and Pippin and hears unpleasant voice asking about him at the Gamgees. They get their packs and Sam says farewell to the beer barrel in the cellar. Sam’s character: ‘I am sure you have given me all the heaviest stuff,’ said Frodo. ‘I pity snails, and all that carry their homes on their backs.’ ‘I could take a lot more yet, sir. My packet is quite light,’ said Sam stoutly and untruthfully. They walk, encamp, banter, eat, walk, eat, walk on a southern side road running through hill country eastward when they hear hooves coming up behind them. Frodo wants them to hide and “curiosity or some other feeling was struggling with his desire to hide.” The rider seems to have an invisible nose and is using it to smell for someone. They begin traveling alongside the road a stone’s throw to avoid detection. They encounter a rider again and then run into the elves who take them to a wood hall. Gildor! The Black riders are scared of the elves. The hobbits see the distinction between the Black Riders and the Elves. What is the significance of the songs they sing in this chapter? Gildor offers protection for the hobbits and is impressed with Frodo, naming him “Elf Friend.” Gildor tells Frodo and the hobbits to carry on without Gandalf and to avoid the black riders. Gildor tells the hobbits that he’ll send word to any other allies about his journey, although Frodo will discover that the elves are increasingly leaving Middle Earth. Three is Company - Weeks pass, and Gandalf becomes impatient with Frodo's lack of preparation for leaving.

The Nicks discuss whether Nicholas is in love with Aragorn and whether Frodo can trust Strider, the long-expected physical description of our main character, the danger outside, and a letter that is only 3 months late. From the A Way With Words podcast episode entitled Pig Latin - 29 January 2017 -- "Why do so many people begin their sentences with the word So? In linguistics, this is called sentence-initial so. The word So at the start a sentence can serve a variety of functions." Maps Map of Middle-earth LoTRproject.com interactive map - Caution: spoilers for new readers! Notes for this episode What Happened Last Time?: Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry take their leave of Tom Bombadil at the road outside of Bree, after a short walk they arrive at the gate at night and are greeted none-too-kindly by Harry the gatekeeper who is astonished that 4 Shire-hobbits have arrived after dark. Finding the Prancing Pony, and having a pleasant dinner Merry stays behind and/or goes for a walk in the town while Frodo, Sam, and Pippin visit the common room. They are greeted warmly by the locals, and find their stories welcome, though bordering on too much info. Frodo - trying to divert attention away from too many questions - accidentally makes their position much worse and raises more questions about themselves than ever. Where Are We in the Narrative?: Frodo and co. have finally made it to Bree after setting out from the Shire (small delays in the Old Forest and the Barrow Downs aside.) Gandalf is still MIA and word is spreading that he is unaccounted for. A mysterious Ranger knows perhaps more than we’d like of Frodo Baggins of the Shire, and Rivendell seems a lofty distance away………………*OMINOUS* The Story in this Chapter: (We didn't keep to our notes in the same way as other episodes) Words we use differently - faggot Strider - serious, friendly?, scared, knowledgeable, full of warnings, rascally look, quick ears, hunter, can avoid being seen, laughs, smiles, older than he looks, knows the lands from the Shire to the Misty Mountains (more?) Reminds me of the CONSTANT VIGILANCE of Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody Overheard the hobbits on the road out of the downlands Has been looking for Frodo Hopped the gate Things he says that show he knows things and/or is a friend Knows Tom Bombadil He knows what chases them, and their number (not given) He knows Frodo’s first name, not just Baggins “The secret” Later mentions the Ring, no one mentions it before. He speaks the verse Shows the broken blade Mentions that he learned of Frodo’s leaving the Shire from Gildor Inglorion Bill Ferny Swarthy sneering fellow Swarthy means dark skinned (additional sources #1) Would sell anything to anybody and make mischief for amusement Friendly with a Southern stranger Strider’s face and body language when speaking of the black riders He is really afraid of them, which should scare the hobbits even more “You fear them, but you do not fear them enough” Sam - voice of reason? Caution Stereotype of a vagabond Frodo’s leadership “Caution is one thing, and wavering is another” Assumes that the riders have missed him. Before the night is over the Black Riders will have heard of Frodo Butterbur Arrives Apologies aplenty - though weak First descriptions of Frodo’s physicality (it’s only chapter 10) Stout, red cheeks, taller than some, fairer than most, cleft chin, perky with a bright eye. Frodo Baggins - Number 1 Bagshot Row - Bag End - Hobbiton in the Shire Mid Year’s Day - Summer Solstice We would think of this as the first day of Summer EncArda - Mid-year’s Day - The day that marked the middle of the year Also called Loëndë, the day that fell in the middle of the year was an important feature in many of the calendars of Middle-earth. On a modern calendar, Mid-year's Day would be 22 June. (Additional Sources #2) If Gandalf is not with him - he may be in trouble Trouble is not far off - the black riders Dogs yammering - geese screaming Butterbur slammed the door on them They’re getting a lot of rejection Blocking Strider Would never leave Bree The idea makes him scared MORDOR - The Shadow in the East Butterbur even more scared The worst news in Bree Story of Bilbo known in Bree - people putting it all together Merry is still missing The Letter - Post Scripts Gandalf was in haste and had to add three addendums to make sure he told all 1 - don’t use it again - an assumption? 2 - The real Strider - thanks for the poem… Aragorn Broken sword 3 - Poor, poor, Butterbur Gandalf in great danger Not just a firework maker Trust Strider? Trust without proofs “The enemy has set traps for me before now” Wants friendship Pippin - Handsome is as handsome does “You would die first unless you are made of sterner stuff than you look to be” Sam - Play-acting spy “If I was after the ring” ← first-time “ring” is used this chapter “If by my life or death I can save you, I will” Enemy would “Seem fairer and feel fouler” The verse Out of Bree Get lost Go to Weathertop Strider and Gandalf Came back to the area in the Spring Sarn Ford down the Brandywine - 1st of May Strider learned the original plan Strider is troubled about Gandalf’s absence Word came to Strider from elven folk of Gildor had spread the word that Gandalf was missing and that the Riders were about. Also, that Frodo has left Hobbiton - but no news about leaving Buckland (success!) What can hold Gandalf back? - THE enemy? “This business of ours will be his greatest task Merry finally comes in, out of breath, he just saw the black riders! Strider asks for more details, Merry is hesitant (first time he’s met him!) Aragorn tells him he has a stout heart (dare I say surprised at him? Are they already proving more hardy than they look?), but Merry was “drawn somehow” after the Rider. 2 Figures - one Muttering the other whispering or hissing. Something knocked him over, made him feel like he had fallen into deep water. Nobb found him with two men stooped over him… he called over to them and they fled. Nobb shouting is also possibly a brave thing - though he lives in a place where Man-kind and Hobbit-kind are equals - maybe not so brave as typical for him. Strider calls it “the black breath” and declares that the southerner is a spy, and Bill Ferny too! Reassures that the Riders will not openly attack a home….. Yet. Stay here… and do not go to your rooms… we’ll stay together and bar the door. Frodo catches Merry up on everything he has missed while Strider and Nobb grab their luggage. Nobb is proud of creating decoys of the hobbits in their rooms. Pippin (at Frodo’s expense) - “Very lifelike” Uncommon word for Nicholas when he first read this story - “Bolster” A long thick pillow placed under other pillows to add support or bolster them. They block the door with a chair, Frodo draws the curtains and Strider lights a fire and sits in the chair against the door. “Jumped over the moon… very ridiculous of you Frodo,” comments Merry. Strider - “I hope so.” SLEEP! Other comments or observations: What is the timing of the events alluded to in the chapter? Gandalf met Strider - May 1 Gandalf wrote the letter (Mid-Year - June 22)- where was Frodo? How many weeks has Frodo and company lost? For that matter - how long has Gandalf been missing? Notable Difference(s) from Films: Much shorter sequence, Nobb is not involved, nor are any southerners or spies. No letter from Gandalf. We are not told Strider’s true name this soon in the films. Locations/Distance Traveled/Distance apart: Still in Bree/ The Prancing Pony New Characters: Bill Ferny - The swarthy, sneering, Breelander Info/History from Other Titles/Sources: https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/swarthy - Swarthy means dark skinned. If you like tall, dark and handsome men, you find a swarthy complexion attractive. Not everyone with dark skin is swarthy. The word is usually used to describe someone whose skin is weather beaten and darkened by the sun, or has an olive complexion. http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/m/midyearsday.html What to Watch for in the Next Chapter: Back on the road with a new guide - trying to get lost in the wilderness - hoping Strider is a good guy (he is). Concerning Book 1 Chapter 3 of The Fellowship of the Ring, “Three Is Company”... On this episode, we continue our discussion of The Lord of the Rings with Book1, Chapter 3 of Fellowship, Three Is Company. In this chapter, Frodo sets out from Hobbiton and does a whole lot of walking. Of course, he also has a near disastrous run-in with the mysterious black riders and encounters Gildor, a Noldoran Elf of the First Age. Also, thanks to contributions from listeners, we experience a veritable haiku tsunami. I hope you enjoy our discussion. Well the party has found Gildor, but there are a bunch of nasties around him. No problem. OK, maybe some problems if no one can hit anything. In the combat beers we try an interesting offering from New Belgium.
The crew needs to find Gildor, so it's off to Castle Cragmaw, with a few stops beforehand to gather some information, and of course sleep with other party member's families. In the Combat beers we try an autumn offering from The Bruery.
