We've been a circus at times but now we're a Dogga and Prancing Pony show! Time to Restump Podcast the withdrawal of the 4 points from the Kanga bank. When you get over the line in a last gasp effort against a team serially occupying cellar dwelling real estate, you're usually disappointed and rarely anything more than relieved. However, on this occasion, North deserves the credit. They brought and applied a pressure level none of us saw coming and it was all but good enough to beat us.However, in what is another step in the right direction and a feather in our cap, we found a way to win when previously we may not have done. Is this the maturing filtering through? The age and experience factors gradually starting to take shape? Can we just dip our lids, applaud and enjoy the Voss gloss? A two-time club discard, what a revelation Paddy Voss has been. From outside looking in, not only has he played his part in transforming our former robotic and predictable manner, he has created energy with his enthusiasm and made a material contribution. We say the Saints game was the catalyst for Freo's turnaround, but has it been the Prancing Pony instead? He came in the game after and has kicked 10 goals in his 5 games since. And while we're on the topic of discarded players, Corey Wagner deserves a standing ovation. Luke Davies Uniacke was cutting us to ribbons, ending the first half with 20 touches and a goal. Second half, Mr Longmuir said, “Mr Davies Uniacke, meet Mr Wagner.” LDU ended the game with 27 touches. Tristian Xerri was always going to be a problem but we saw some good improvement in Sean Darcy and while Luke Jackson didn't have his substantial midfield impact, he still found a way to influence the game. However, had it not been for the great Josh Treacy's defensive acts, we may be singing a different tune today. Sure, you expect Cyclonic performances in wet weather, but his game saving mark backing into a pack of Kangaroos deep in defence with just moments to go, has been undersold. His subsequent kick out of bounds on the full… we won't mention that.We won the game so the coaches obviously got it right, but there was a little disappointment in the subbing off of Neil Erasmus. For someone who has lacked opportunity and hasn't put a foot wrong since his return, maybe there were grounds for keeping him on. But with Fyfe looking for minutes, Nathan O'Driscoll playing superbly at Peel, Alex Pearce thereabouts, Izzy Dudley set to return and Brandon Walker closing in, there might be a few selection headaches and disappointments in the near future. Not a bad problem to have though. It was the first of the five vital games that will determine our September quest and we got the dishes done. And at the end of the day, that is all we really needed to do. We now need to feast on the next four and sure up some percentage given the tightness of the battle for top eight spots. It's a short turnaround as this Thursday night we take it to the Dons who are coming off a belting at the hands of Geelong. We need to be ready for their response. All in all it was a better win than a win over a bottom placed team suggests. We were made to work for it and we had to earn it. However, we got shown that we're still susceptible to pressure and if a top eight team dropped it on us, they also probably wouldn't allow us to score as freely and get away with it. Just some assessable balance food for thought. It's more a bank the 4 points and move on but there's always plenty to bang on about. So, if you're not ready to robotically put it behind us and be all methodical about it, feel free to join us on the pod to squeeze every last ounce of eSend us a textSupport the show

J.R.R. Tolkien was a pretty good nonsense poet. You can find this poem in the chapter "At the Sign of the Prancing Pony" in The Fellowship of the Ring, as well as in Tales from the Perilous Realm. It was originally printed on its own in The Adventures of Tom Bombadil. Enjoy!

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 14, 2023 is: harbinger HAHR-bun-jer noun A harbinger is something that foreshadows, or gives an early indication of, something that will happen in the future. // When the star running back went down with an injury in the team's first game, it turned out to be the harbinger of a disappointing season. See the entry > Examples: “Whether a subtle whiff of campfire on a cool autumn breeze or the less-than-subtle lure of a pumpkin spice latte, the spicy, savory harbingers of fall spark a shift in the food and wine we crave.” — Anna Lee Iijima, The Chicago Tribune, 14 Sept. 2022 Did you know? In J. R. R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, four hobbits—pursued by riders in black—seek safe harbor in the village of Bree. Unbeknownst to the hobbits, the innkeeper of The Prancing Pony, Butterbur, was made aware of their potential arrival by the wizard Gandalf some months prior (“... I was asked to look out for hobbits of the Shire ...”). When you consider the oldest, now-obsolete definitions of harbinger, there are multiple harbingers in this section of the tale. The first is Butterbur himself: coming from the Anglo-French herberge, meaning “lodgings,” harbinger was used as long ago as the 12th century to mean “one who provides lodgings.” Later on, harbinger was also used for a person sent ahead of a main party to seek lodgings. Those sent ahead would announce the approach of those following behind (the hobbits did not send Gandalf to Bree, but he did still herald their eventual arrival—making him a harbinger of sorts), which is how our modern sense of harbinger came to be used for someone or something which foretells a future event—such as how the hobbits' arrival is a harbinger of the evil pursuing them and threatening all of Middle Earth.
There is an inn, a merry old inn…

The hobbits arrive in Bree, a village in which both humans (Big Folk) and hobbits (Little Folk) make their homes. At the village gate, they answer some suspicious questions before being let through. As they pass through the gate, a dark figure climbs the gate and follows them. They get rooms and supper at The Prancing Pony, where Barliman Butterbur is the harried innkeeper. After supper, Frodo, Sam, and Pippin join some of the other guests in the common room, while Merry remains in the private parlor provided by Butterbur. Frodo, going by the name Mr. Underhill, pretends to be a writer planning a book on hobbits living outside the Shire in order to account for their presence. Amidst the chatter, Frodo notices a stranger smoking a pipe and watching him. This man introduces himself to Frodo as Strider. The stranger warns Frodo not to let Pippin talk too much, and Frodo realizes Pippin is telling the story of Bilbo's disappearance during his birthday speech. Rather than let Pippin finish, Frodo interrupts with a song of his own. Yet as he finishes his silly song, he disappears, having inadvertently placed his finger through the Ring in his pocket. Strider chastises Frodo as the room erupts in suspicious and puzzled murmuring. The Fellowship of the Ring: Written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Soundtrack composed by Howard Shore. Audiobook narrated, produced, and edited by Phil Dragash. Art by Jian Guo.

They make their way across the countryside as the sun rises in the sky and the temperature warms. Coming to a tall stone pillar, they let their ponies stray about on the grass as they sit in the cool shade of the stone and have lunch. The next thing they know, they wake "from a sleep they had never meant to take." The air is heavy and the ponies distressed, and they swiftly pack up and leave, but the mist only becomes thicker. Frodo, suddenly alone, becomes disoriented, wanders in the dark, and finally hears a cold voice saying, "I am waiting for you!" A dark figure takes him in a cold grip, and he falls unconscious. When he wakes, he realizes he has been captured and entombed by a Barrow-wight. As he gathers his courage, he sees his friends lying nearby, arrayed with treasures and dressed in white. A long sword has been laid across their three necks. Frodo hears an incantation, and sees a creeping hand going toward Sam. Grabbing a sword, Frodo hacks the hand from its arm, and calls out for Tom Bombadil. After a short silence, Frodo hears Tom's voice singing as he approaches. Tom banishes the Wight, and helps Frodo carry the others to safety. Sam, Merry, and Pippin wake up. Tom finds the ponies which had wandered off, and has each hobbit claim a sword from the many treasures in the wight's barrow. He accompanies them to the borders of his lands, and advises them to make for The Prancing Pony, an inn in the village of Bree. The Fellowship of the Ring: Written by J.R.R. Tolkien. All this plus hilarious stories from their many years as friends, and experienced advice for the cast of Amazon's The Rings of Power series. Warning: some mature language.
In the second half of our time in Bree, we dive into the larger Bree-land, its four towns, and why the area is such an important place in northern Middle-earth. The 4 Personal QuestsWelcome, Adventurer to the first episode of Becoming The Hero. I'm Justin Lewis and I'll be your DM for today. You might think DM means dungeon master as in from Dungeons and Dragons. While I am an excellent Dungeon Master, that's not what DM stands for on this show. No, here DM means development master. I'll explain more about that later. If you're listening to the show for the first time Becoming The Hero is The Personal Development podcast for nerds who see amazing heroes in their books, comics, games, or movies and desperately want to be like their heroes. This is the show to help you become like them. Do you know that feeling you feel when seeing a cool scene in a movie? I want you to have that feeling about yourself. It's going to take some mental shifts and also some work, but I truly believe that everyone can have lives they feel you can write a book or make a movie about. So let's get into it. You're probably thinking that now we need to talk about “setting goals” and being “SMART” about it. You're right…. And you're wrong. You don't need goals. You've likely been setting goals your entire life. You've probably hit some and missed some. You need something more. You need a personal quest. Cast your mind. Think about Tolkein's Lord of The Rings, or Lucas' Star Wars, or Rowling's Harry Potter (and yes I know the faux pas I committed in having you compare Tolkein and J.K. Rowling, but just go with it for now). The hero in each of those stories doesn't set goals. Instead, they set out to accomplish something. Frodo set out first to take the ring to Gandalf at the Prancing Pony and then to Rivendel and then to Mordor. Luke set out to get off of Tatooine and then to help Princess Leia and then finally to become a Jedi like his father before him. Harry set out to become a wizard, and then pass his years in school and then fight He Who Must Not Be Named over and over and over again. I'm not saying that writing down goals isn't worth your time. You're going to be doing a lot of writing because you won't remember everything you think of. Instead, I'm saying you need to add a little more adventure into your life. Add more excitement and let that help fuel you onto the greatness you so truly desire. “Oh Great and Wise DM Justin, what kinds of personal quests are there?” Well, I'll tell you incredibly handsome and humble inner voice. In my estimation, there are exactly 4 types of personal quests. Everything else is just specifics. You can set out to acquire resources. You can set out to build relationships. You can set out to develop skills. And you can set out to further a cause. If you think of another category, please email me as I'd love to be illuminated. But seriously, all your personal quests fall into these categories. “Can I choose all of these quests?” Of course, you can inner voice, however, I don't know that I'd recommend it. You see, by choosing the quest, you also indicate exactly what VICTORY looks like. Accomplishing the quest happens in part because of the specificity. Do you want an example of unspecificity? Think about the movie Forrest Gump. Forrest is an amazing individual, but at a certain point, he loses all specificity in his life. He decides all he wants to do is run, so he does. He doesn't have any aim or goal, he just wants to run. That works for him because that's what he wants. He runs and runs and finally at one point, he decides he doesn't want to run anymore. His quest was to run. It wasn't to run any distance or reach any destination. In that regard, he did reach his goal, but for you and I, we'll need something a little more specific. So let's briefly talk about these 4 personal quests and then I'll give you today's side quest. Acquiring Resources:The goal of this quest is to “slay the beast” and “get the loot”. Whoa…. Hold your horses. I'm not...

Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about Ned's choice of topic: Ralph Bakshi's animated film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. A heavily promoted effort at the time due it being both the first ever version of Tolkien's work done for film as well as due to Bakshi's notable reputation as the most well known American animator since Walt Disney and Chuck Jones, the 1978 movie was a reasonable success but not a smash, and the fact that it was only the first half of a planned two-film sequence – but not marketed as such – led to confused audiences and an upset Tolkien reader fanbase. At once a surprisingly faithful if still heavily redacted version of the book and a very unusual mix of animation styles that grew out of Bakshi's earlier movies, the film has retained a cult following since, and the resulting contrast with the later Peter Jackson movies has proven illuminating to both. What makes the sequences like the Flight to the Ford both compelling viewing and something of a slog? Which voice actors bring a notable depth to their characters along with the script and animation efforts – and which ones end up undercutting their characters completely? How does the shifting between particular animation styles, even within scenes, both act as intriguing experiment aiming to solve particular problems and yet also a confusing mess? And what is up with that incredibly generic musical score?SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle. Jackson riffed on this scene for a reason. And Jared did bake a cake for Megaphonic's Kitchen Party!
