Did you know that humans now have a shorter attention span than goldfish? Unbelievable, right?  But according to research, our attention span has markedly decreased since the turn of the century. In 2000, it was 12 seconds. By 2015, it had shrunk to a mere 8.25 seconds. The question now is: How does that information affect your approach to business strategy? When you are a company decision-maker who needs to use consumer data and insights, you're not going to read a 200-plus page report.Listen to my conversation with Camille Nicita, CEO of Gongos Inc., who shares how to take all that consumer knowledge and create customer-focused strategies that will give you a market advantage. Listen to Episode 701 to learn more!Other Resources Mentioned:Gongos.comThriving Points:If you don't like change, you'll like irrelevance a whole lot less. - Camille NicitaThe market is always changing. Welcome to another exciting and informative episode of the Data Gurus podcast! Today, Sima is happy to have Camille Nicita, the CEO of Gongos, joining her as her guest for the show. Camille is one of the four founding partners of Gongos. In this episode, Camille shares her early career experiences and the journey she has been on since the founding of Gongos thirty years ago, which culminated in her becoming CEO. She also discusses the step-by-step transformation of Gongos and explains what they do to meet their clients' needs in a world of big data. How Gongos came about  While she was doing an internship at an automotive group for a research company, John Gongos asked Camille and three others to join him when he decided to go out on his own and do a startup. Camille was young and had no commitments at the time, so she took a leap of faith and agreed. A great experience Camille found getting thrown in at the deep end a good learning experience! From the get-go, she loved being part of Gongos because she was with a group of smart people with whom she enjoyed doing things. Restless dissatisfaction Part of the DNA of Gongos is continuous improvement. Every year since she started working at Gongos, Camille has continued to learn, grow, and become better than she was before. At Gongos, they call never resting on their laurels restless dissatisfaction. Seeding the future of the organization As the company grew, Camille started to interview people, recruit talent, and place the right people in the appropriate positions. She always kept her eye on the future and where the organization was going. She made sure that she always took on board the kind of talent that would seed the future of the organization. Camille's path to becoming CEO Throughout her years at Gongos, Camille always took on new challenges and opportunities. Early on, she became a member of the leadership or strategy team that determined the key direction of the company. She took on many different roles and learned as much as possible about the organization. She also stayed at the forefront with all her client interactions. She listened carefully to what her clients needed and brought back what she learned and fused it into all the areas of the organization. That primed her well to become CEO. Camille never aspired to be CEO  In 2012, John Gongos passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. Camille was COO and a minority shareholder at the time. When John passed, she became the controlling shareholder. It was natural that she also became the CEO because she honored John and felt that he would have wanted her to do it. A new vision After John passed away, Camille and the other leaders in the organization rallied together to prove to the world that they could carry on running Gongos in the same successful way as before. Big data was coming onto the scene at the time, so they also took the opportunity to create a new vision for the organization. Customer-centricity At Gongos, they have always been into customer-centricity and helping their clients make good decisions. When their clients started to rely on data that was not created by them, they started looking at their capabilities beyond qualitative and quantitative research that could help them to help their clients thrive in a world where data is abundant. Challenging data The most challenging data for them to work with was big, messy sets of enterprise data. They soon learned that they needed to structure that data to work with it. They also needed to have data engineers on their team in addition to data scientists, to structure the messy data. New talent They started bringing into the organization people who are potentially good researchers with business acumen who could also consult well with the clients. Gongos now has a great combination of talent that includes researchers, data scientists, consultants, strategists from various walks of life,

Camille Nicita on why belonging is more important than skills

People at Work

A sense of belonging is one of the five basic human needs according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. We want to feel part of something and have an emotional connection to others. This extends into the workplace. To be fulfilled at work, we need to trust those around us, feel a kinship with our coworkers, and be surrounded by those who share the values of the organization. My recent interview with Camille Nicita of Gongos, Inc. shows what this looks like in action. Camille has spent almost three decades creating an organization that emphasizes belonging over skills. This means that hiring, onboarding, nurturing, and advancement of every team member at Gongos is deeply rooted in the company’s values, the first of which is humanistic. More than a “people-first” attitude, Gongos’ humanistic approach helps every person feel that they belong. It’s by belonging that employees do their best work, contribute to culture, and help teams and the organization succeed. That’s why Camille believes that hiring to values is more important than skills. You’ll want to listen to her words of wisdom and draw from the lessons Gongos learned along the way to creating a healthy and empowered workforce, satisfied customers, and a prosperous business. About our guest: Camille believes that centering operations on customers will produce consistent results and bring together decision-makers. She also believes a great employee experience precedes a great customer experience. Hear how this mom of three, and leader of many, lives out that belief every day. Recorded live in Miami, Jamin Brazil interviews Camille Nicita, President and CEO of Gongos. We hope you enjoy this mini series taking you into the minds of some of the most influential CEOs in Market Research. Find Camille Online: LinkedIn https://gongos.com/ [00:02] I have Camille with Gongos.  It’s an honor to have you on the podcast today.  We’re here at the CEO Summit, Insights Association.  You probably don’t even remember this, but we were at a conference at the same time.  I can’t remember where it was, but it was ages ago right when you first started. You had a customer – Dunkin’ Donuts, I believe.  Do you remember that? [00:25] We’ve actually never worked with Dunkin’ Donuts. [00:27] Oh, you’re kidding.  Crap! Maybe it wasn’t Dunkin’ Donuts. [00:30] I’m trying to think.  So, how many years ago would it have been? [00:33] It was a LONG time ago.  Right around I want to say like 2005, 2006, no? [00:38] Oh, Best Buy, maybe. [00:39] Best Buy. [00:40] Best Buy. [00:40] And did you do a custom panel for them? [00:42] Yes.  And it was at TMRE. [00:44] Yes, that’s right.  That’s right. TMRE.   [00:46] That’s it, for sure.  Best Buy, Dunkin’ Donuts.  Best Buy should probably be selling Dunkin’ Donuts. [00:52] So, I tried to do (they would probably agree with you.)…  So, I tried to do a custom panel business at Decipher back in like 2001 and 2002 for a company called Intuit, which you know.  And it just didn’t go well at all. And the reason it didn’t go well is, while the technology itself wasn’t particularly difficult, the systems and the processes and the engagement part of it were really, really, really hard, right?  And I was listening to your presentation; I’m like, “Holy, crap! They’ve cracked the nut; they’ve figured out how to really nail that.” So maybe you could tell us a little bit about your company and maybe the couple-minute sort of overview of where you started and where you are.   [01:36] Sure.  Thanks for asking.  So, let’s see where do we start.  Gongos is what we call a decision intelligence company.  At this stage in the game, we are going on our twentieth year of business.  Gongos started in 1991 as a traditional marketing research custom, ad hoc, qual/quant business.  And we were very, very successful at that for our first 23ish years, but about five years ago is where we sort of evolved into this decision intelligence business, which is still very much rooted in consumer insights.  That’s the core to what we do, but over the last 5-6 years, we’ve build other capabilities around that insights function to really help where we saw pain point with our clients, which was in sort of moving insights farther up the value chain:  I should say farther up as well as starting them farther back in the value chain, so ensuring that our clients are really leading with a customer-centric strategy to fuel their growth. [02:43] It’s interesting hearing how McDonald’s framed it yesterday.  Matt did a great job of asking two questions. I tweeted about that.  Of course, I’m going to forget right now. But I think it was centric to like what is… [02:56] Curiosity. [02:57] Curiosity was the centric – that’s right.  One was an internal question of, basically, “Put yourself in the shoes of the customer.  Get to know the customer.” [03:06] Well, and empathetic approach.  I think we heard somebody else yesterday talking too about (I think it was General Mills.)  I can’t remember the gentleman’s name, but the guy from General Mills talked about, for a week, making their executives live on the budget of a typical customer. [03:26] I love that. [03:27] I do too.  I mean it’s such a…  In order to truly be a customer-centric organization, you’ve got to walk in their shoes. [03:33] Brands have gone through this massive evolution in five years.  In five years, what a CEO cares about has completely changed. I’m not going so far to say that they didn’t care about the customer before,

In this episode, Rhod looks at whether philanthropic giving is always a choice on the part of the donor, or whether it can sometimes be compelled. Topics covered include:   -Compelled by your peers: We look at the part peer pressure plays in philanthropy, both at a micro level (i.e. the effect that "being watched" has on prompting giving) and a macro level (i.e. the notion of a social contract). We also consider a bit of history (including a scathing attack on the culture of giving in Victorian England).   -Compelled by a higher authority: We consider the role governments have played a role in shaping philanthropy through charity law: from the 1601 Statute of Charitable Uses to the emergence of "GONGOs" in modern China. We look at the idea of "percentage philanthropy", and whether it should be seen as philanthropy at all, or merely a form of tax. We also touch on obligations to give in various major religions and what role these play in driving philanthropy.   -Compelled by your own mind: We explore unusual cases of "pathological generosity", where people with brain damage find themselves compelled to give to such a degree that it can adversely affect them and their families.     Related Material   Public Good by Private Means: How Philanthropy Shapes Britain   Eye Images Increase Charitable Donations: Evidence From an Opportunistic Field Experiment in a Supermarket   So are the conditions for philanthropy improving in China or not?
