The Castello di Ama wine ghosts are some of the most elegant bottlings of Tuscany, thanks to their location in one of the highest parts of Chianti Classico. The estate was leading the way in the creation of the ‘Gran Selezione' and in the single vineyard wines in the area. Oh, and they were also the first ones to bottle single-varietal Merlot in the region! You could also hear Lars Granat Jensen, the CEO of Rare Wine Invest, praising the estate in our last episode, which might leave you with an extra incentive to look into the Castello di Ama wines more intensely. 1:27 - Intro & Terroir & History 11:52 - Gran Selezione 14:27 - Sangiovese and its clones 23:23 - Warming Climate & New Varieties?! 26:54 - Single Vineyards Characters 31:35 - Elevage 35:30 - Who is the typical Castello di Ama drinker?
Also gibt es beide blind ins schwarze Glas.
The first of a three-part journey into Chianti Classico. in this episode we look at the past, present and future of the denominazione with our special guest, Giovanni Manetti, Chariman of the Chianti Classico Consorzio and proprietor of the venerated Fontodi estate in Panzano. This is Manetti's second term as the Chairman , where he has been a driving force of innovation and evolution, helping to re-establish Chianti Classico as one of Italy's, and the world's, leading quality wine-producing regions. The creation of the Gran Selezione category at the top of the quality pyramid, as well the introduction of UGAs (Unità Geografiche Aggiuntivi), added geographic mentions within the greater Chianti Classico territory, are just two of the invigorating projects which Manetti has championed and pushed through. The Thieves deliver the latest news regarding Gran Selezione regulations and the new UGAs, but focus first on the history of the region from Etruscan settlements in the 8th century BC, to the legend of the gallo nero, the mezzadria sharecropping system that shaped Chianti Classico as we know it today, Barone Ricasoli's 19th century 'recipe' for Chianti, the 1970s crisis (fiasco?), and the renaissance of quality wine. There is much to unpack in this multi-faceted region, so important and recognizable to wine lovers around the world.A happy 307th birthday to Chianti Classico, an anniversary for which we give thanks to the Grand Duke of Tuscany and patron to the arts, Cosimo dei' Medici III, who famously demarcated the wine region of Chianti in 1716 and created the first legal appellation of origin for wine in the world. Tuscan aficionados won't want to miss this episode that reveals how Chianti Classico's past has set the stage for its modern renaissance. This episode has been produced in partnership with the Chianti Classico Consorzio and financed according to EU regulation 1308/2013.

- Hvordan smagte vin i middelalderen? - Hvad betyder 1,5 procent på alkohol i vin? - Hvad er Renés holdning til VA? - Er aromatilsætning en stor ting i Italiensk vin? Vi smager på 1. Castello dei Rampolla - Sammarco Vino da Tavola Castello dei Rampolla 2015 2. Isole Olena - Chianti Classico Fattorie di Isole e Olena 2016 3. What changes are on the horizon for Chianti Classicos? James talks with Giovanni Manetti, the owner of Fontodi Winery and president of the Chianti Classico Consortium, to find out how Gran Seleziones are doing in the marketplace. Giovanni takes James through sales of Gran Seleziones, the new subregion classification being applied to Gran Seleziones, and changes in the blend – specifically the minimum amount of sangiovese allowed, among other changes. He also breaks down whether winemakers can buy grapes for Gran Selezione and whether the consortium will still have a tasting panel.
Episode 570 Monty Waldin interviews Tommaso Bojola of La Castellina Winery. About Tommaso: Tenute Squarcialupi - La Castellina di Tommaso Bojola is a winery which extends for 140 hectars, with 40 hectars of vineyard producing mainly Chianti Classico, located in the South West side of the valley, bordering with the town centre of Castellina in Chianti. The historical centre of the winery is the ancient Palazzo Squarcialupi (XV sec.), where there is an ageing cellar, the direct sale, the farm restaurant Taverna Squarcialupi and the Hotel Palazzo Squarcialupi. The Tenute Squarcialupi – La Castellina Farm originates from the powerful Squarcialupi family, in the medieval period, while he started the management of the winery in 1989, together with his wife Monica and later on with his son Cosimo. From 2008 they produced organic grapes and from 2020 organic wines too, authentic wines representing their territory. Together with his son Cosimo just graduated in oenology; together they are introducing new winemaking techniques such as the drying of the Merlot grapes (Supertuscan Reale), the late harvest (Ch. Class. Tommaso Bojola), the spontaneous fermentation (Ch. Class. Squarcialupi Annata), the longtime maceration (Ch. Class. Squarcialupi Riserva e Gran Selezione), the amphora vinification (Ch. Classico Cosimo Bojola) and the vinification without the addition of sulphites (Rubisco 2020). Vine smagt i denne episode:
If you find wine from Italy confusing, and/or want to get a better understanding of wines from Tuscany, then this is the episode for you. Listen to show host Joe Janish get the download on Tuscan wines from winemaker Giovanni Folonari, whose family has been making wine in Tuscany for over 100 years. Giovanni explains the following: - the differences between Chianti, Chianti Classico, and Chianti Classico Riserva - the new Chianti designation: Gran Selezione, and why Italians insist on confusing the world - when and why you should choose from these different types of Chianti (hint: it has something to do with what you're eating) - how a winemaker can get arrested for breaking Italian wine laws (it's true -- you can!) - where the term "Super Tuscan" came from, and what it means - why the term "Super Tuscan" might mean nothing at all - what "Super Tuscans" you might enjoy, and why - how to choose Tuscan wines - the simplest, fool-proof rule for pairing food with Tuscan wine (or any wine, for that matter) And much more.
Earlier this year I had the pleasure of visiting a number of producers in Chianti Classico. To hear those shows check back to episodes 61 - 67. Sadly, while there I missed the chance to visit one of the region's most iconic estates, Ricasoli at Castello Brolio in Gaiole. Fortunately, when I returned home, I had the opportunity to meet with Francesco Ricasoli. During his visit he previewed the release of Raritas, a line of three single vineyard Chianti Classico wines that are the highest most distinguished expressions of wines produced on the Brolio estate. Technically Gran Selezione wines, Francesco calls these "Cru" bottlings. We met to discuss this project and how it fits into the idea of Gran Selezione, his research from which these wines were born, and of course to taste some delicious wines
In this episode Monty Waldin interviews Alessandro Gallo, general manager as well as vineyard manager and wine maker at Castello d’Albola, an estate in Radda in Chianti, Tuscany, which belongs to the Zonin family. Alessandro, who is originally from the Langhe region in Piemonte, has been living and working in the area for 15 years and tells Monty about the Chianti Classico terroir of Radda in Chianti. The village of Radda in Chianti is one of the highest in the appellation and the most historical for Chianti Classico production. Castello d’Albola grows mostly Sangiovese, which is cultivated up to 600 meters on the sea level. The estate also grows Chardonnay at 700 meters to make their Poggio alle Fate white wine; they also grow Cabernet Sauvignon for their “Super Toscano” Acciaiolo. Monty and Alessandro discuss the difference between the Chianti Classico Riserva and the Gran Selezione and Alessandro presents some of Castello di Albola’s flagship wines: Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva, and the Gran Selezione Santa Caterina and Il Solatio. Tune in to learn more about the Chianti Classico soils and wines and discover Alessandro’s passion for steak!
Cesare was born with the taste of Sangiovese in his mouth, as he says it. He's 4th generation to be making wine in Chianti Classico, and we dig into so many topics that are very relevant in today's wine world. From the introduction to the Gran Selezione tier to what is happening with the branding of Super Tuscans and how they're involving. I also always enjoy hearing how the next generation is gearing up to take over. Please note, this podcast will sound better if listening while riding a Ducati at 200 mph (actually don't do that, but listen and you'll get it)!
In this episode Monty Waldin meets Leonardo Bellaccini, oenologist at San Felice Group in Castelnuovo Berardenga in Chianti Classico, Tuscany. Monty and Leonardo talk about viticulture and climate change as well as the markets for Chianti wines. Leonardo also discusses the tradition of vin santo and food and wine pairings with Chianti Annata, Riserva, and Gran Selezione. Tune in also to find out San Felice’s future plans of expansion!
We welcome our new Italy co-host, Filippo Bartolotta, a native Florentine, wine expert, writer, and travel company owner. This fabulous normal wine guy tells us about himself, about Italian wine culture, and about how to get the best out of Tuscan wine! The Show Notes: 1. Chianti is hard to recommend by appellation, the producer is more important ("heart and land"). Still, the best areas for Sangiovese are on the northern slopes. Areas between Florence and Siena like: Castelnuovo Berardenga, Castellina, Gaiole, Radda, Barberino Val d'Elsa, San Casciano are great. Colli Pisane, Colli Fiorentine, Colli Sienese have good wines as well. 2. Classico is a safe bet for an old school Chianti with: A light color licorice orange peel violet cherry terroir! 3. Chianti Classics a minimum of 80% Sangiovese but can be 100%. It includes native grapes like Colorino or Canaiolo, and Merlot, Cabernet, and Syrah in small proportions. 4. Classico also has a Riserva tier (aged a min of 24 months with a minimum of 12.5% alcohol to guarantee the fruit is ripe), and Gran Selezione (aged 30 months in barrel, 13% alcohol minimum). Example: Montevertine (especially Le Pergola Torte), 5. We talk about how Super Tuscans raised the bar. We discuss Tiganello by Antinomy, Cepparello 6. The best producers pay attention to climate, clonal selection and tension between acidity, fruit and terroir. 7. Great producers In Montalcino: Tenuta di Renieri Pietroso Tenuta Le Potazzine Fuligni Le Ragnaie In San Gimignano (Vernaccia): Sono Montenidoli, Cesani Panizzi Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara La Lastra San Quirico Il Lebbio I know we promised a list of more Tuscan producers, but it's been hard to get a hold of those names since Filippo is the wineman to the stars : ) For now, we can use this list from an article he penned for Decanter a while back... http://www.decanter.com/wine-travel/italy/top-10-tuscan-wineries-to-visit-13770/2/
