Not many wines ascend to the status of 'icon'. But Sassicaia is one of them. The beauty is that it's not a flashy wine - quite the opposite ('old school' might be a more appropriate description). What's more, its ascent to the wine stratosphere is largely accidental - this scented, elegant Bordeaux blend from Bolgheri in coastal Tuscany was only ever intended as a quaffing wine for friends and family on the Tenuta San Guido estate, a farm initially dedicated to breeding horses, growing crops and a wildlife reserve. How times change. In this episode, we peek behind the scenes of Sassicaia, asking what really makes this fine wine tick, talking to the key people, tasting the top vintages, busting myths and asking the difficult questions. Price is one - it's gone up significantly of late. Fraud is another - Italian police recently broke up a gang running a fake Sassicaia operation to the tune of €2m. Priscilla Inchisa della Rochetta, Brett Flemming and Nicolas Clerc MS shed light on all these issues and more.Along the way, we recommend our all-time favourite Sassicaia vintages, and touch on things like the 'secret' Sassicaia, The Divine Comedy, sommeliers kissing each other, Desperate Dan, World Cup penalties, Italian stallions and lobster pie. Thanks for tuning in. To download the transcript CLICK HERE In today's episode, I have more than your average wine story. I will be talking all about Super Tuscans: An Italian wine category created from rebellion and innovation when a group of daring winemakers decided to break all the rules, planting French grapes in Italian soil. In the 1980s, these wines took the wine world by storm and they still are some of the most highly desirable wines in today's wine scene. So, by the end of this episode, you will know the history behind this wine style, the key players and the desirable wines, but also I will be talking about some more affordable versions too.   And you should hopefully also feel more excitement when opening up a Super Tuscan knowing it is a wine that broke all tradition, represents innovation and is a perfect blend of history and modernity.  This episode is sponsored by Wickham Wines, A small business themselves focusing on top quality wines. We now journey into the fascinating world of Barbera, the grape variety that has seen a revolution due to Braida's founder, Giacomo Bologna who believed in this grape when so many others had pigeon holed it as ‘just for cheap wine production'. His dedication to experiment and innovate with barriques has led to their flagship wine Bricco dell'Uccelone being one of the most famous Barberas being made.   By the end of this episode, you'll acquire a nuanced understanding of its bright acidity, lush fruit notes, and the diverse expressions it unveils. In this episode Stevie sits down with Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta More about today's winery Tenuta San Guido is a property of approximately 2,500 hectares, of which around one hundred are under vineyards. The company was the first to produce a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine back in the 1940s thanks to the experiments and vision of its founder, Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. The choice of this variety and the use of barriques for aging laid the foundations for the "Bolgheri" model. The company is the only one to have vineyards suitable for claiming DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, a typology born as a sub-area of the Bolgheri DOC already in 1994 and converted to an autonomous DOC in December 2013. The company's wine par excellence is Sassicaia, the whose first vintage on the market dates back to 1968. After a very long and extremely warm few months, it looks like summer is finally on its way out. This will undoubtedly cause some sadness to those of us that cannot imagine their lives away from the sea. While it will be a long time until we finally get to swim in the sea and bask in the sun, this doesn't mean that we're not allowed to spend some time in our favourite vacation spots while the weather doesn't turn ugly and cold. Tuscany has many great places where you can have a great day trip by the sea in autumn but few are as charming as one of the most exclusive villages on our coast. This fishermen's village became a hot spot for intellectuals and artists around 150 years ago, slowly turning into one of the most interesting places you can go to have a relaxing and very culturally enriching vacation. For a few decades this was the favourite refuge of movie stars, artists, politicians and a place where you could always meet interesting people. Now things have slightly changed but it's still a great place to visit. This is why this week, What's Up Tuscany will bring you to the coast to tell you everything there is to know about one of my favourite places in the whole world, the lovely village of Castiglioncello. If you listen to the full episode you will learn how it all began around 150 years ago, when, completely by chance, a group of talented artists chose to spend their summers in this tiny village. They loved the nature and scenery so much that they started incorporating what they saw in their paintings, which became the best advertisement ever for the developing resort. I will also tell you how famous politicians, writers and actors chose Castiglioncello to spend their holidays and why this brought many well-off people in town. Today you can go there and walk in their footsteps, from the castle that has taken the place of the house where the Macchiaioli stayed to the stocky tower that dominates the little bay to the little museum where you can see copies of their masterpieces. While you're at it, I will describe you the many coves and beaches where you can have a great day by the sea, a bunch of stuff to do in this interesting town and a couple great places where you can have a great meal. Summer may be far away but you won't be disappointed if you spend a couple of days in Castiglioncello. If you give it a chance, it will steal your heart.Email: podcast@larno.itFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/larno.itTwitter: @arno_it / @WhatsupTuscanyLINKS TO SOURCEShttps://www.thegrandwinetour.com/en/famous-italian-art-sites/castiglioncello-macchiaioli-tuscanyhttps://www.visittuscany.com/it/citta-e-borghi/castiglioncello/https://tuscanyplanet.com/castiglioncello/https://www.iltirreno.it/cecina/cronaca/2022/07/08/news/venduto-lo-storico-hotel-miramare-di-castiglioncello-diventera-un-albergo-di-lusso-1.100048757BACKGROUND MUSICPipe Choir - Bom Bom Breakthrough (Instrumental)Pipe Choir - Children of the Son (Instrumental)Wayne John Bradley - Pick You UpMike Chino - Calm and HarmonyIncompetech - Leopard Print ElevatorPipe Choir - Ignite to Light (Instrumental)Wayne John Bradley - Blues Rock Original InstrumentalAll released under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licensehttps://soundcloud.com/pipe-choir-2/pipe-choir-bom-bom-breakthrough-creative-commons-instrumentalhttps://soundcloud.com/pipe-choir-2/pc-one-children-of-the-son-creative-commons-instrumentalhttps://soundcloud.com/ayneohnradley/pick-you-up-slow-poprock-style-instrumental-creative-commonshttps://soundcloud.com/argofox/mike-chino-calm-and-harmonyhttps://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1500077https://soundcloud.com/pipe-choir-2/pipe-choir-ignite-to-light-creative-commons-instrumentalhttps://soundcloud.com/ayneohnradley/blues-rock-original-instrumentalcreative-commonshttp://www.pipechoir.com/

What's Up Tuscany

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 18, 2023 22:30

What is a Cape Wine Master? Should you buy wines based on medals won from competitions? What does the future of wine recommendations look like? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with international wine and spirit judge, Dr. Winnie Bowman. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Highlights Why did Winnie transition out of her previous careers and into the wine industry? What is a Cape Wine Master, and how is it different from a Master of Wine? How costly is it to become a Cape Wine Master? What are some of Winnie's earliest memories of wine? Which types of sweet wines is South Africa known for? What are some challenges faced by women working to make a name for themselves in the wine industry? How did a vertical tasting in Rome feature in Winnie's best moment of her wine career so far? How did Super Tuscan winemakers defy traditional wine regulations and come out on top? What interesting notes did Winnie notice in tasting 50 years of Sassicaia wines? How does tasting technique help you avoid palate fatigue? What have been some of the most interesting wine competitions to judge? Which hard-to-find grapes has Winnie encountered while judging wine competitions? How do wine competitions and the medals they award impact consumer decisions?   Key Takeaways I was interested to learn what a Cape Wine Master is and how that differs from Master of Wine. Winnie also had some great insights into whether we should buy wines based on medals won from competitions and how those competitions themselves are run. I loved her story about tasting through 50 years of the cult Tuscan wine Sassicaia and that 1950s vintage still had power and grace - it wasn't tired.   Join me on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube Live Join the live-stream video of this conversation on Wed at 7 pm ET on Instagram Live Video, Facebook Live Video or YouTube Live Video. First, if you haven't checked out my new site – shout out to Polly Hammond, my dear friend and a complete rockstar at www.5forests.com!   This time, we decided to do this show as a good set up for next week's show with Stefania Fuselli, one of the sisters who runs Le Vigne di Silvia, an outstanding family winery that the Patrons and I visited while in Bolgheri. I am so excited to share that winery with you, but I felt it would be a better experience if we first explained what Bolgheri is, since as MC Ice points out, it's still a little obscure to many people.   Map: Wikipedia The bottom line: Bolgheri is the birthplace of the ‘Super Tuscan' movement   Bolgheri is a small DOC on the Tuscan coast in the province of Livorno, where the hills taper off to the sea. Bolgheri itself is a tiny village (blink and you may miss it!), famed for a cypress-lined avenue that is one of the most photographed sites in Italy! Bolgheri is home to the OG “Super Tuscan” wine – Sassicaia (Tenuta San Guido), which now has its own DOC – Bolgheri Sassicaia (the only monopole in Italy). Photo: Bolgheri Mountains.

One of the most common complaints that foreigners make is that Tuscans are a bunch of nostalgia junkies, so attached to the past of their region to do anything in their power to keep everything exactly as it is. The average Tuscans doesn't care much about these accusations but it's true that this land seems to never change at all in the centuries. Despite some corners of our cities seem stuck in the Renaissance, this is just an illusion. Things change, sometimes in unexpected ways. When I was little, my family used to rent a vacation flat in a small seaside resort between Leghorn and Grosseto. Aside from the great beaches and the crystal blue sea, I particularly looked forward to the peaches you could only buy there, the best I've ever eaten. According to my father, the wine was nothing to write home about. We had no idea but just a few miles from our little flat, next to a road made popular by a Nobel laureate, a remarkable character had embarked on an impossible mission: create a new wine from nothing, beating the French masters at their own game. Many laughed at his attempts and there were a few painful failures on the way but in the end the determination of Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta won the day. His "alien" wine, which had nothing to share with Tuscan winemaking tradition, is considered by many experts as the best wine on the planet. The tale of how this nobleman that loved nature, thoroughbred and wine managed to turn his impossible dream into reality is as fascinating as not widely known. That's why this week What's Up Tuscany will bring you to Bolgheri, on the Etruscan Coast, to tell you the story of the Sassicaia, the "new wine" that has taken the world by storm. Let us know if you like this kind of episode or if you'd rather us talk about food, local specialties, travel tips or hidden corners of our region. Chianti over centuries had become the equivalent of Italian red wine and grew to be a style rather than a wine that represented a place. The key producers in the Chianti Classico region were aristocrat Florentine families with interestingly up to the Second World War, a run their estates with a system known as sharecropping. Landowners allowed farmers the use of the land in return for half of the production, which resulted in little incentive to improve quality. Central Tuscany saw the very first attempt to define a wine production area legally by Grand Duke Cosimo III de 'Medici in 1716, with the boundaries outlined and criminal penalties on any merchant or customer buying wines falsely claiming to be from these areas. This law was never really used, though it was intended to protect the good reputations of these wines and to prevent fraud. The creation of Sassicaia in 1968 and Tignanello in 1971 inspired the category of Super Tuscans and led to similar wines produced in the 1980s in the Chianti Classico region. Chianti Classico became an autonomous DOCG in 1996. In other words, it is no longer a sub-zone of Chianti. My guests today are Frances Di Savino and Bill Nesto MW co-authors of ‘Chianti Classico: The Search for Tuscany's Noblest Wine.' With which we explore the history of Chianti Classico, how those decisions tarnished the images of Chianti and what the contemporary producers are looking to change that.Bill is a Master of Wine who teaches in two colleges at Boston University: Metropolitan College, Fran is a corporate attorney who has a background in medieval and Renaissance studies and is Bill's partner in life and on the wine roadRemember to Subscribe and leave a Review! I 2016 over tar Descours familien fra Frankrike aksjemajoriteten i Biondi Santi. Many lovers of our region envy us "natives" as we are lucky enough to live a few miles from a wealth of historic, architectural and natural landmarks unparalleled anywhere else. Sometimes, though, living in a postcard-picture region has a long list of drawbacks that can turn your life into a nightmare. Ask the residents of the many towns and villages that are touched from mass tourism for reference. The arrival of hordes of tourists makes that many of the historic shops downtown are replaced by restaurants, bars, ice cream and souvenir shops overflowing with all sorts of tacky knick-knacks that have nothing to do with the products of our land. Lured by the prospects of renting to tourists, many landlords turn their flats into bed and breakfasts or places to offer on AirBnB. The locals, sooner or later, move away, starting a vicious cycle that in a few short years turns a vibrant community in a desert that comes to life only during the summer months. More and more towns are therefore turned into open air museums, where the most vital members of the community are slowly cast aside. Looking for the lowest common denominator to lure tourists have pushed local governments to cast aside centuries old traditions to try to reinvent themselves as beacons of "high culture". The events they organize sometimes lure wealthier tourists but have nothing to do with our real culture. How can we make sure that Tuscany isn't turned into a sort of "Renaissance Disneyland"? As far as we're concerned, we should go back to our centuries-old traditions. Our popular culture has nothing "low" about it, we should stop being ashamed of it. Tuscany lovers from all over the world would be thankful for it. What is your take on it? Are you aware of events and initiatives that are trying to recover old traditions in towns and cities in your area? With the judicial addition of select international grape varieties we get the big dogs like Sassicaia, In this episode we check out some lesser- known wines from Montecucco. The we slide over to Abruzzo ( next door) for a little sip of everyone's favorite, affordable, pizza wine; Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. INTERVIEW AND TASTINGA few months ago we announced the best 100 wines of the world in 2020 in our Top 100 Wines of 2020 report, and top of the list was Argentina's Chacra Pinot Noir Patagonia Treinta y Dos 2018. As well as winning our Wine of the Year award, it was also our Argentine wine of the year. We gave a special nod to this great pinot of Chacra because it is also from biodynamically farmed grapes and from a special place at the end of the world in Patagonia. The man behind this wine is Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, who founded Bodega Chacra in 2004 and is also one of the shareholders of Italy's famous Tuscan estate of Tenuta San Guido, producers of Sassicaia. He and James had a discussion about this amazing wine and discussed the winery's goal to create wines that express the climate, micro-climate, and terroir of Argentina's Rio Negro region of Patagonia. Chacra's pinot noir vineyards were originally planted in 1932 ("treinta y dos") and they are now organically certified. Piero's spectacular pinots show there's more to Argentina's excellent red wines than bold, bright malbecs. In this podcast, you can hear them taste the Chacra Pinot Noir Patagonia Treinta y Dos 2018 and talk about some of the factors that made the wine so good and how biodynamic practices influenced the wine. "If you work very hard, excellence can be achieved and that lifts everyone up," commented Piero. Listen to the podcast for the full discussion.

This week we welcome Piero Incisa of Bodega Chacra. Piero comes from one of the oldest and most celebrated winemaking families in Italy. He's the grandson of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta -- who broke with Tuscan tradition in the 1940s to create Sassicaia, one of Italy's most sought after wines -- and the nephew of Nicolo’ Incisa della Rocchetta, who currently manages the family’s winemaking enterprises. Piero spent his childhood on the family estate in the Maremma district of Tuscany After discovering a pinot noir grown in Patagonia, Piero decided to start his own winery in Argentina. He founded Bodega Chacra in 2004 in the Rio Negro Valley of Northern Patagonia after buying an abandoned vineyard. Apart from producing delicious wines, Chacra is notable for it's biodynamic farming practices. This holistic approach sees the farm as a single, living organism and each element is balanced to create a self-sustaining ecosystem. Joe and Piero sit down to discuss how Chacra got it's start and what this farming philosophy, which is growing in popularity worldwide, means for the winemaking process.
