I welcome to the show, again, and this time for a much longer and more thorough conversation, Luca Paschina, the head winemaker and GM of Barboursville, the historic property in the Monticello AVA of Virginia. Luca was on the show in 2016, originally on episode 162. Barboursville has a long history, which starts around the same time as its current owners' wine history -- the Zonin family of Veneto (found 1821). We discuss Thomas Jefferson and his role in trying to get Virginia wine started. Luca tells us about Gianni Zonin, who purchased Barboursville in 1976 and created the first world class winery in Virginia. He is still the owner today. Luca has been the head winemaker of Barboursville since 1990. He gives us an excellent retrospective on what he has learned in these decades and the key terroir points about the Monticello AVA. tell us the . We also touch on some of the challenges and the advantages of the region and we are pretty honest about separating the wheat from the chaff. This is a very honest look at Virginia, and frankly a great way to tell if a winery you visit knows what they are talking about. If they don't follow Luca's advice, likely the wine isn't going to be very good! This is a great show and I hope it motivates you to look more into the excellent wines of Virginia! _______________________________________________________________________ Full show notes and all back episodes are on Patreon. NYC rapper G.L.A.M. “Been That Ill” is Black Caviar’s fourth collaborative single with G.L.A.M., following 2018’s “Killa Shit Funk” and 2019’s double single release on Dim Mak Records with “Alright Alright Okay” & “Zonin.” Leading the single with G.LA.M.’s impressive vocal delivery, she lays down a high-energy flow on “Been That Ill,” which is perfectly met with stunning production from Black Caviar. Heavily inspired by New Orleans bounce music fused with playful dance elements, “Been That Ill” has all the necessary ingredients to make waves on the club and festival circuit this summer. “Been That Ill” comes weeks after Black Caviar’s new single “On My Own Masters,'' with the latter track heating up on Spotify playlists worldwide including Dance Rising, Operator, omw, and Friday Cratediggers. Viognier and Cabernet Franc are most closely associated with Virginia wines, but at Barboursville Vineyards, Italian varieties such as Vermentino, Fiano and Nebbiolo flourish, notes Luca Paschina, estate general manager/winemaker. The temperate climate and alluvial soils of Virginia's Piedmont region attracted Italy's Zonin family, who acquired this Barboursville in 1976 to plant vines. Paschina discusses terroir and Barboursville's signature wines including its iconic Octagon. www.bbvwine.comThe Connected Table SIPS! Fabio Zonin is a StrongFirst Certified Instructor. He is a former powerlifter, natural bodybuilder, and the owner of fitness centers. He has authored many articles for Italian popular magazines and websites that are dedicated to fitness, bodybuilding, and strength. How have things been in Italy over the last 90 days for you? Fabio says that it is getting better in Italy. Italy did not have the experience to deal with the COVID. Italy is open again, however, they do have their rules with social distancing, sanitization, and masks. Within the organization of Strong First, you have been evolving and shifting as well, can you give us some insights into some updates on that? How are you working out Strong First now? Strong First is a company that is based on live events, and the events were often rescheduled or canceled, it was difficult in the beginning. Managing events were not easy, so Strong First worked on creating a stronger online presence to help their customers to stay strong at home. Strong First turned some of their in-person events into online live events. Strong First sees their events becoming smaller. Does Strong First have first branded gyms or studious? Strong First has gyms that have specific requirements. It needs to have certified instructors. Strong First reached over 50 gyms and then COVID occurred, it will take a few months before they start creating and reopening gyms. How many certified coaches does Strong First have? What are some of the numbers you guys have as far as your community? Strong First has 4000 instructors worldwide in over 50 countries. Coaches need to recertify every 2 years, and Elite Instructors need to recertify every 3 years. Strong First had to give extended recertification dates for coaches due to COVID. Pablo was on the Joe Rogan podcast. How did that affect the community? Do you see any traction? How did that affect the community? What was the result of that? It increased traction, from people who did not know who Strong First was. Pablo is a natural-born leader, and it was a great podcast. The podcast piqued interest from outsiders and was great for the community. Is there any particular technology that you guys are looking at right now to kind of step into the next evolution fo what this industry may look like? Strong First is looking int a training app and a streaming system for online training to provide a window to our instructors to be seen. Technology and going online will help people be coached by different people and in different countries. It can be difficult finding a trainer that fits your time but using different times zones can change this. How do you think the fitness industry is going to be fundamentally different? Zonin is concerned that going too fast into going online may affect quality. Zonin has been basing a lot of his feedback on his online sessions on the feedback using people’s faces, and the transition to online made it difficult to see how people reacted. When COVID started, a lot of people turned to be an online presenter, you need to learn how to present in front of a camera and the way you teach. So many social media gifts did not give away quality workouts, the student has no idea how to figure out what is good or what is bad. Castello di Albola Chianti Classico In this episode, Rob, Scott, and Becky all review the classic Chianti Classico from Castello di Albola. Further, we have another game of Pro v. Con, however, this time we see The Unlicensed take on The Wine Guy. Will this be an even matchup, or does Scott need to take on a 6 year old for that to be possible? We shall see...on The Wine Vault.
In this episode Monty Waldin interviews Alessandro Gallo, general manager as well as vineyard manager and wine maker at Castello d’Albola, an estate in Radda in Chianti, Tuscany, which belongs to the Zonin family. Alessandro, who is originally from the Langhe region in Piemonte, has been living and working in the area for 15 years and tells Monty about the Chianti Classico terroir of Radda in Chianti. The village of Radda in Chianti is one of the highest in the appellation and the most historical for Chianti Classico production. Castello d’Albola grows mostly Sangiovese, which is cultivated up to 600 meters on the sea level. The estate also grows Chardonnay at 700 meters to make their Poggio alle Fate white wine; they also grow Cabernet Sauvignon for their “Super Toscano” Acciaiolo. Monty and Alessandro discuss the difference between the Chianti Classico Riserva and the Gran Selezione and Alessandro presents some of Castello di Albola’s flagship wines: Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva, and the Gran Selezione Santa Caterina and Il Solatio. Tune in to learn more about the Chianti Classico soils and wines and discover Alessandro’s passion for steak!

We can’t believe we are saying goodbye this week to one of the triumvirate of our show, and yet here we are waving sayonara to Tony! He is moving over to the dark side (aka brewery side) with our friends from Sierra Nevada, and so of course we decided to have a party with friends who have been with us from the start! We welcome old-timers Aubrey Herbert & Joe Zonin - plus newcomer Connor Desmonds! To help make it extra special, Jenn and Aubrey raided their secret stashes for some epic whales: Rodenbach Vintage 2012, Sierra Nevada Barrel-Aged Narwhal 2015, Beer Geek Speedway Stout Mikkeller/Alesmith Collab 2014, and a Sierra Nevada Bigfoot 2008! The news was easy with the help from our intrepid staff (that would be you guys!) culling the beer world for stories! We start with one from Chip via The Washington Post asking that if craft beer is booming, is that bad news for the U.S. economy? Next Bill D finds from Gallup that Americans still favor beer over other alcoholic beverages! Then we get a companion set from Frank C and the Toronto Star with the news that Ontario Premier Doug Ford says there will be buck-a-beer by Labour Day weekend, although he should have asked first because craft brewers have turned him down! Finally Michael R has Food & Wine’s list of the 25 most important American craft beers ever brewed, and Scott F sends us VinePair’s question for 10 brewers: what’s the best stadium beer? We have your answers to last week’s #caskquiz “what beer have you found this summer that has dazzled you?” This week we want you to tell us “what’s the lowest price you have paid for a craft beer?” We so love hearing from you! Please send in feedback and beer suggestions by calling us at (919) 502-0280, Tweeting us, following our Instagram or friending us on Untappd, posting on and liking our Facebook page, or emailing us! And please rate & review us in iTunes or Stitcher if you haven’t done so!
You know, some of the world's most respected wines are made right here in Northern California. However, I do like to branch out and learn about wineries across the country...and the world. I thought you might be interested as well. In this podcast I’m reaching across the globe to talk with Brand Marketing and Communications Manager, Jelena Meisel of Italy’s Zonin1821. They're a nearly two centuries old vine growing and winemaking company, the largest private and family wine producer. Their web address in the states is ZoninUSA.com. The number "1821" signifies the year the company was formed. Jelena joined me on the phone to fill us in about the family and brands. Someday I hope to see a few of the properties in person. If you get a chance, visit the website to see them. Bellissima!

He’s the owner of the coveted 10 timers jacket and he’s in the bar! Yes our good friend Joe Zonin returns to celebrate Carolina Brewing’s 23rd anniversary with us! Plus he shares some outstanding beers with us: Be Like Mike New England IPA, Irish Dry Stout, and a special treat, the Belgian-Style Quad Beer Army Collaboration! At long last MegaMergerMania returns, in two stories! First up in The Drinks Business we learn that Australia’s Lion is acquiring London’s Fourpure Brewing, and we follow with Food & Wine reporting that six foreign craft beers owned by AB-InBev are about to make their US debut. Next up Craftbeer.com (thanks Michael Radziwon!) shows that Denver’s Brewability Lab is giving special needs adults a job and purpose, then The New York Post profiles a female beer sommelier, and The New York Times uncovers America’s craft beer diplomacy. We close over at Call to the Pen where we see the San Francisco Giants are charging nearly $20 for craft beer! We have your answers to last week’s #caskquiz which asked “do you have a beer cellar? Is it organized?” This week we want to know “have you ever traded beer with a stranger? What was swapped?” We so love hearing from you! Please send in feedback and beer suggestions by calling us at (919) 502-0280, Tweeting us, following our Instagram or friending us on Untappd, posting on and liking our Facebook page, or emailing us! In this podcast Monty Waldin meets Francesco Zonin (Zonin 1821) for an interesting discussion on marketing Italian wine and the different psychological perceptions of wine in different cultures. Fran-cesco talks about his father’s “wine” travels in the 70s in places like Australia, New Zealand, Chile, California, Brazil, Argentina, and his stop in Virginia where the family owns Barboursville Vineyards. Francesco talks about the complexities of marketing and communicating Italian wines in today’s rich landscape of social media and communication technologies.
In this episode, Francesco Zonin of the Zonin Family Winery talks to Monty Waldin about the challenge to communicate the uniqueness of Italian wine, since Italy has a huge grape biodiversity. Francesco also talks about the Italian wine culture and how wine is synonymous with community: in Italy people “live wine” with family and friends. Italian Wine Podcast, hosted by wine writer Monty Waldin, explores family histories, wine-making traditions, and personal stories of renowned producers of Italian wine.

To follow up on the Virginia wine podcast, conversations with Luca Paschina of Barboursville Vineyards, who has been making wine in Charlottesville for 25 years, and a quick snippet of Kelly White of Glen Manor. Both will highlight why VA wine is so unique. A few things on the podcast: 1. The recordings were in tasting rooms. If you don't like ambient noise, skip this one. 2. You'll hear my dad and Frank Morgan of Drink What You Like blog and Virginia wine expert asking questions as well. I travelled heavy this time! Most of the podcast is a conversation with Luca Paschina of Barboursville Vineyards in Charlottesville, Virginia. They are a standard-bearer for quality in the region, as one of the oldest and finest producers: We discuss Luca's background -- his schooling in the Piedmont of Italy, his experiences, and how he wound up in Charlottesville working for the Zonin family at Barboursville in 1990 Luca explains the improving reputation of Virginia and how Barboursville works to promote the region by making excellent wine We get NERDY -- talking about everything from vineyard management, to diseases that California nurseries have been sending their way and the economics of that, to use of oak, yeast, and wine fads. Then we talk about grapes, and there is some tasting of the Vermentino and the Bordeaux blend, Octagon (at one point I say "Sauvignon" and I'm talking about Cabernet Sauvignon, BTW). Next we have a 5 minute snippet of a conversation with Kelly White of Glen Manor. Kelly gives us specifics on vintage, how it works for them, and some examples of extreme vineyard management Then she discusses how they make wine and their philosophy and work ethic. These wines are top notch, and much of the magic comes from their orientation and ideas about great wine. Then we wrap! Enjoy!
Meeting with winemaker Lorenzo Zonin, Podere San Cristoforo, Tuscany at restaurant 19 Glas in Gamla Stan,Stockholm.
