How long can an emperor not be an emperor. The official record stands at 25 years, that is how long Friedrich III had stayed out of the core areas of the Holy Roman Empire. That meant 25 ears of Imperial Diets without the presence of an Emperor, 25 years of stasis on the challenges of the time, the reform of the empire and the defense against the Ottoman expansion. But sometime in the late 1460s the apathic emperor Friedrich III, dubbed the Imperial Arch Sleepy head awakes and does what he had never done before, something. And that something turned into a lot of things, some related toimperial reform, but the most significant something for European history was a marriage, well, an engagement for now, followed by a flight down the river Mosel away from the intended father of the bride. Yes, it is that famous marriage, just not in the way you may have thought it happened. Die beiden sind Quereinsteiger, aber voller Leidenschaft und Gastfreundschaft: Gabriele und Michael Borchert. In Ediger-Eller haben sie vor 25 Jahren ein Weingut gegründet, dazu nicht mal eine Handvoll Ferienwohnungen. Mittlerweile ist ihr Springiersbacher Hof die Keimzelle für Wein (mit 3 ha in Steil- und Steilstlagen – der Calmont gleich nebenan lässt grüßen), Destillate und knapp ein Dutzend Ferienwohnungen. Nach Langeweile klingt das nicht, aber wenn's Spaß macht, ist das ja keine Arbeit. Oder etwa doch? Tonight, we are trying a Kabinett Riesling from Mosel, Germany. Just for some added fun we also have an Emma Reichart Dry Riesling from Rheinhessen, Germany. So what is a Kabinett (Cabby – Net) and what are other words used to describe the sweetness in German wines. Trocken is the German word for dry. Kabinett has crisp acidity, green apple, citrus and delicate floral notes. Good for an aperitif and pair nicely with light seafood dishes and salads. Dry to a little sweet. Spatlese is a late harvested wine so will have riper stone fruit, touches of honeyed and tropical notes, and acidity. These wines pair well with spicy foods and soft cheeses. Auslese is made from fully ripe fruit and may even have some “Nobel rot”. It has flavors of apricot, honey, and caramelized apple. Pairs with desserts and strong blue cheese. Hint: you can often tell the level of sweetness from the alcohol level. Anything over 11% alcohol will typically be dry. Less than 11% will probably have some level of sweetness. Tonight, our two wines are: 2023 Karl Kaspar Riesling Kabinett. It is an off-dry Riesling with a classic Mosel profile. Intense mineral and floral aromas, low alcohol and a wonderful balance between sweetness and crisp acidity. The grapes come from two single vineyard sites of stoney, slate soil. Grapes of different ripeness levels are used. 45% Riesling Spatlese from middle Mosel and 55% Riesling Kabinett from the lower Mosel. Fermented in stainless steel tanks. Serve well chilled. Excellent aperitif or with fish or poultry. 2024 Emma Reichart Dry Riesling. This wine was purchased from Trader Joe's for $5.99 and comes from the Rheinhessen region of Germany. Flavors of peach, citrus, and slate. Crisp. The wine received a Bronze Award and a score of 88 from Decanter. This is considered a medium-dry wine with residual sugar from 5 to 18 g/L. It has 11.5% alcohol.We both liked the wines and gave them a three rating. Denise liked the Emma Reichart, but I found it to be a little sweet and lacked the balance of the Karl Kaspar. Next week, we return to the USA. We will taste the hybrid wine grape Baco Noir. The wine comes from New York, and we will also talk about its wine industry.

Am Gaumen saftig und frisch, mit harmonischem Spiel aus zarter Süße und lebendiger Säure. Die Schiefermineralität sorgt für Klarheit und Spannung – ein unkomplizierter, aber charaktervoller Wein, der perfekt zu asiatischen Gerichten, leichten Fischspeisen oder einfach zum Feierabend passt. 2023 Dr. Loosen Weißburgunder Trocken Ein eleganter Weißburgunder mit feinem Duft nach Birne, Pfirsich und einem Hauch Passionsfrucht. Am Gaumen treffen saftige Frucht und eine kühle, mineralische Frische auf dezente Holznoten – typisch für die Schieferböden der Mosel. Harmonisch, rund und dabei wunderbar trinkanimierend – ein Burgunder, der zeigt, wie vielseitig die Mosel neben dem Riesling sein kann. 2024 Riesling Kabinett edelsüß „Alte Reben“ Der „Ohligsberg“ ist eine der Spitzenlagen an der Mosel – sonnendurchflutet, vom Schiefer geprägt und bekannt für filigrane, verspielte Kabinettweine. Dieser Riesling duftet nach Orange, Birne, Aprikose und einem Hauch Mango. Durch die spontane Vergärung gewinnt er an Tiefe und Komplexität, während die feine Fruchtsüße perfekt mit der lebendigen Säure harmoniert. Ein leichter, hochpräziser Wein, der die Kunst der Mosel-Kabinette meisterhaft zeigt. Anna Zenz ist die 77. Deutsche Weinkönigin. Sie wurde am 26. September 2025, in Neustadt an der Weinstraße gewählt. Ihr zur Seite stehen Emma Meinhardt aus Saale-Unstrut und Katja Simon von der Hessischen Bergstraße als Deutsche Weinprinzessinnen. "Auf ein Glas" war zum Antrittsbesuch in Ediger-Eller, dem Heimatort von Anna Tenz. Zum Podcast trafen wir uns aber nicht im elterlichen Weingut, denn die Weinkönigin soll ja nicht den eigenen Betrieb promoten, sondern für den deutschen Wein insgesamt stehen. Also trafen wir uns beim Nachbarn, der uns den (leicht zu Hall neigenden) Saal überlassen hatte. Wein aus Ediger-Eller gab's dann aber doch – auf ausdrücklichen Wunsch eines Podcasters sogar den vom elterlichen Weingut (mehr Wein aus Ediger-Eller dann in einer der nächsten Folgen, ich war anschließend noch im Springiersbacher Hof!). In dieser Folge geht's hoch hinaus, denn es dreht sich alles um eine spektakuläre Art des Weinbaus: die Steillagen an der Mosel. Mit dabei ist Matthias Knebel, einer der prägenden Winzer der Region und bekannt für seine ausdrucksstarken Rieslinge aus den steilsten Terassenlagen überhaupt. Gemeinsam mit Lou und Jonas erklärt er, was die Böden der Mosel so einzigartig macht, welche Rebsorten in Steillagen besonders glänzen und wie man solche Weinberge überhaupt bewirtschaftet, wenn Traktoren längst keine Chance mehr haben. Außerdem klären wir, ab wann ein Weinberg eigentlich als „steil“ gilt und warum Matthias überzeugt ist, dass sich dieser enorme Aufwand lohnt. Wein der Woche: Winningen Von den Terrassen Riesling Knebel Der „Von den Terrassen R“ ist ein puristischer Terrassen-Mosel-Riesling aus 100 % Steillagen. Er präsentiert sich mit feiner Schieferwürze und einer tiefen Mineralität, kombiniert mit hervorragendem Trinkfluss – also Terrassenmosel pur! 11 Monate auf der Vollhefe gereift, wirkt er am Gaumen enorm dicht und schmelzig, ohne dabei die Eleganz des Rieslings zu verlieren. Frage der Woche: Bringen steile Lagen grundsätzlich besseren Wein hervor? „Der klassische Vorteil, dass durch die Hanglage mehr Sonne auf die Reben fällt, war früher tatsächlich wichtig. Heute, im Zeichen des Klimawandels, spielt das allerdings eine kleinere Rolle. Entscheidend sind vielmehr die Kombination aus tief verwurzelten, oft sehr alten Rieslingstöcken, niedrigen Erträgen und den charaktervollen Böden. In der 154. Folge unseres Podcasts "Auf ein Glas" haben wir je drei Weine von zwei renommierten Weingütern – beide Mitglied im VDP – und beide haben in Sonderserien mal etwas andere Weine gemacht, wenn auch mit unterschiedlichem Ansatz. Der Karthäuserhof an der Ruwer wurde 1335 von Karthäusermönchen gegründet und gilt damit als das achtälteste Weingut der Welt. Bekannt vor allem für große Rieslinge, rundet die junge Linie Bruno (benannt nach Bruno von Köln, dem Gründer des Karthäuserordens) das Sortiment nach unten für den Alltag ab – nicht nur mit Riesling, sondern auch mit Pinot Blanc und einem Rosé. Auf Schloss Proschwitz in Sachsen heißt die Sortimentsergänzung Unexpected – und bei den drei unerwarteten Weinen handelt es sich eher um drei Schübe nach oben im Gutsweinbereich, was die Qualität anbelangt. I start by asking for a big favor!! If you have any ideas, please drop a DM on Patreon or send me ideas through the site!   This show has my recommendations for filling a case of wine with classics from around the world. These wines will give you a great idea of what these regions represent and why they are so famed. Even for experienced wine drinkers, I think it's good to go back to the basics and try stuff you haven't had in a while to remind ourselves why they are so good!   The list contains 12 still wines (no sparkling or fortified this time!), whites, reds, and one rosé. The wines are:   Whites: White Burgundy, which is Chardonnay. I recommend the wine especially from the Hautes Côtes de Beaune or Hautes Côtes de Nuits, Côte d'Or Blanc, or Chablis 2. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc – with a twist. Look for wines from the Awatere or Wairau Valleys. 3. German Riesling from the Mosel (for off-dry wines) or Rheingau. I also mention Pfalz for great dry wines. 4. Portuguese Alvarinho – Vinho Verde, specifically from sub-regions of Monção and Melgaço   Rosé 5. Tavel from the Rhône Reds 6. Bordeaux – especially from the Médoc or Côtes de Bordeaux for Merlot-driven wines (Pomerol and St. Émilion) and for bolder, more ageworthy wines with more Cabernet -- Haut-Médoc or Saint-Estèphe or for spendier versions – Graves, Margaux, Saint Julien, Pauillac 7.   Rioja from Spain   8. Italian reds either Chianti Classico (have food with it!) or Roero/Langhe Nebbiolo/Nebbiolo d'Alba/Barbaresco   9. California – Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir (or more specifically Santa Maria Valley or Sta. Rita Hills)   10. Barossa Valley Shiraz (take another look if you haven't in a while!). For more restraint, you can look for Shiraz from Eden Valley, a sub region of the Barossa Valley   11. Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon, especially Maipo Andes/ Alto Maipo is best, due to the higher altitude in this area 12. Right now, it's so hot in much of the country, it's hard to get creative about anything, let alone a new wine that may provide some refreshment. That's what I'm here for!
