What makes Sangiovese a difficult wine to grow and make? Why should you pay attention to the white wines of Tuscany? What do you need to know about Tuscany's Vin Santo? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Susan Keevil You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Two of you are going to win a copy of her terrific book, On Tuscany: From Brunello to Bolgheri, Tales from the Heart of Italy. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck!   Highlights What are some common mistakes people make when comparing Tuscan wines to those from other regions? What are Super Tuscans and how did they come to be? Why did these rebel wines capture the imagination of the world in the 70s and 80s? What's the new Super Tuscan counter culture about? Why did Brunello di Montalcino achieve icon status? What makes Sangiovese difficult to grow and why doesn't it tend to thrive in North America? What motivated Susan to include sections on Tuscan white wines and Vin Santo in the book? How is Vin Santo made and why is there so much variety? What makes Tuscan olive oil so special? How can you best pair Tuscan wines with food? Why would Susan love to be able to share a bottle of wine with Queen Elizabeth II?   Key Takeaways Susan notes that Sangiovese is like Pinot Noir in that it likes certain terroir, particular soils, the winds of Tuscany, and it is quite a sensitive grape. You can't overproduce it. It responds differently to different sites and it's not good in every vintage. It has so many parallels with Pinot Noir. They don't taste the same, but they behave the same. Susan likes an underdog story like the white wines of Tuscany, because they're only like 10% of the wines produced, though she believes that the Trebbiano grape is like the evil twin. In the book, Emily O'Hare writes about grapes like Vernaccia, Vermentino and Ansonica that are producing some great wines so we should watch out for them. There's another lovely story about wines of the small island called Giglio. It was raided by the pirate Barbarossa, and he sent all the inhabitants away to be slaves in Constantinople. But he brought back people from a village in Greece, and they bought the grape called Ansonica with them and so those vines are still on the island today. Susan thinks white wines are going to be more important for Tuscany. If you're going to find a comparison, Susan says that Tokaji is a really good one, because it has that bracing acidity that the Italians love as well. But also, you can't generalize with it. It's a 3,000 year-old-wine, and every farm makes a different version. In the past, they used to collect these grapes because they couldn't handle all the olives and all the grapes all at once. So they would leave some of the grapes in the drying lofts, up in the roofs. They would dry, and concentrate, and the sugars would get sweeter. When everything settled in November or March or February, they would make a wine from these beautiful sweet grapes. And they all have their own natural yeast from the air. And they would seed that yeast into the wine, ferment, and then they would lock it up in its barrel and leave it for seven to eight years. It would shrink, it would ferment. It would stop fermenting. And then at the end of that time, they would open the barrel very carefully, and it was something magnificent, but very, very different. Each producer would have their own.   About Susan Keevil Susan Keevil is the Editorial Director of Académie du Vin Library, where she has played a pivotal role in establishing and nurturing this esteemed wine publishing house. How was Brunello discovered? How did the medieval sharecropping system help to shape Tuscany's wine landscape? What's the origin of the iconic black rooster symbol of Chianti Classico? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Susan Keevil, editor of the beautiful hardcover On Tuscany: From Brunello to Bolgheri, Tales from the Heart of Italy. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Two of you are going to win a copy of her terrific book, On Tuscany: From Brunello to Bolgheri, Tales from the Heart of Italy. Good luck!   Highlights What inspired Susan to take on the monumental task of compiling and editing On Tuscany? How is On Tuscany different from other books about the region? What was the most captivating wine story Susan uncovered while working on the book? What was the most surprising insight about Tuscany that Susan discovered while putting together On Tuscany? Why did the timeframe pose the biggest challenge in compiling the book? How did Susan discover and select literary gems about Tuscany from historic writers? Why was it important to Susan to write about the Etruscans? What surprised Susan about the ancient Etruscans' relationship with wine? How did the medieval sharecropping system help to shape Tuscany's wine landscape? What role did the Medici family play in shaping the wine culture in Tuscany? What was the crisis of Chianti Classico in the 70s and 80s and how did it redefine the future of Tuscan wines? What's the origin of the iconic black rooster symbol of Chianti Classico? Why does Tuscany continue to dominate media and culture when it comes to wine? What's the history behind the Chianti fiasco?   Key Takeaways How was Brunello discovered? Susan says that from 1875 to 1930, the Biondi Santi family hid bottles of brunello bricked up behind a wall. So after the war, they had these wonderful vintages, and they could say, look how it's aged because they didn't know it aged so well at that stage. That was how the discovery of Brunello came about because they brought these cellared wines to feasts and grand occasions with politicians and monarchs. How did the medieval sharecropping system help to shape Tuscany's wine landscape? Susan observes that it made it beautiful to start with, because we're talking about small holdings. Small farmers gave 40% of what they produced to the owner, the feudal lord, but they had to eke out a living too. So they had their plot of vines, their plot of olive groves, and they put up their cypress trees to defend them from the winds. That gave the beauty to the countryside, because it makes it a jigsaw, it gives it texture when you look at the hills. That way of farming has set up the beauty of Tuscany that we know today. But of course, there was a lot of poverty that went alongside it. What's the origin of the iconic black rooster symbol of Chianti Classico? Susan explains that it came from the 14th century when Siena and Florence were warring as to who was going to be the most powerful of those two towns. They had an agreement that they would send out a horse rider - a knight - early one morning, and wherever those two knights met, would be the boundary between Florence and Siena. The Florentine horse rider set off really early, and they got to within 12 miles of Siena. So the black cockerel is all about strength and having the biggest area.   About Susan Keevil Susan Keevil is the Editorial Director of Académie du Vin Library, where she has played a pivotal role in establishing and nurturing this esteemed wine publishing house.

Not many wines ascend to the status of 'icon'. But Sassicaia is one of them. The beauty is that it's not a flashy wine - quite the opposite ('old school' might be a more appropriate description). What's more, its ascent to the wine stratosphere is largely accidental - this scented, elegant Bordeaux blend from Bolgheri in coastal Tuscany was only ever intended as a quaffing wine for friends and family on the Tenuta San Guido estate, a farm initially dedicated to breeding horses, growing crops and a wildlife reserve. How times change. In this episode, we peek behind the scenes of Sassicaia, asking what really makes this fine wine tick, talking to the key people, tasting the top vintages, busting myths and asking the difficult questions. Price is one - it's gone up significantly of late. Fraud is another - Italian police recently broke up a gang running a fake Sassicaia operation to the tune of €2m. In this episode Stevie sits down with Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta More about today's winery Tenuta San Guido is a property of approximately 2,500 hectares, of which around one hundred are under vineyards. The company was the first to produce a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine back in the 1940s thanks to the experiments and vision of its founder, Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. The choice of this variety and the use of barriques for aging laid the foundations for the "Bolgheri" model. The company is the only one to have vineyards suitable for claiming DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, a typology born as a sub-area of the Bolgheri DOC already in 1994 and converted to an autonomous DOC in December 2013. The company's wine par excellence is Sassicaia, the whose first vintage on the market dates back to 1968.

First, if you haven't checked out my new site – shout out to Polly Hammond, my dear friend and a complete rockstar at www.5forests.com!   This time, we decided to do this show as a good set up for next week's show with Stefania Fuselli, one of the sisters who runs Le Vigne di Silvia, an outstanding family winery that the Patrons and I visited while in Bolgheri. I am so excited to share that winery with you, but I felt it would be a better experience if we first explained what Bolgheri is, since as MC Ice points out, it's still a little obscure to many people.   Map: Wikipedia The bottom line: Bolgheri is the birthplace of the ‘Super Tuscan' movement   Bolgheri is a small DOC on the Tuscan coast in the province of Livorno, where the hills taper off to the sea. Bolgheri itself is a tiny village (blink and you may miss it!), famed for a cypress-lined avenue that is one of the most photographed sites in Italy! Bolgheri is home to the OG “Super Tuscan” wine – Sassicaia (Tenuta San Guido), which now has its own DOC – Bolgheri Sassicaia (the only monopole in Italy). Photo: Bolgheri Mountains. When we were on our last day of the Patron trip in Tuscany, we had our final dinner in Bolgheri at a fairly new winery, Le Vigne di Silvia. This farm is owned by a family that was as kind as they could be. It was everything you could hope for when visiting an Italian family -- great food, welcoming hospitality, homey vibe, and great wine!  Photo: Stefania Fuselli, left. Silvia Fuselli, right. Credit: Le Vigne di Silvia Le Vigne di Silvia was started by Silvia Fuselli, famed former pro footballer (soccer player), her brilliant sister Stefania, the star of this podcast, and her parents.  Photo: From left to right Silvia Fuselli, Carlo Fuselli, Stefania Fuselli, Lavinia Fuselli. Credit: Le Vigne di Silvia   There's nothing better than finding a family-owned winery where the wines are great and the people making them as wonderful. The Vermentino (Giochessa) was outstanding, the Artemio (Cab/Cab Franc blend) silky and lovely, and the Itinerante (all Cabernet Franc) nuanced and layered.    Stefania shares her family's story, how the winery got started, and shares great information about Bolgheri.   The show is such a great look at what it takes to start a winery (and about the history of immigration in Italy too!).

One of the most common complaints that foreigners make is that Tuscans are a bunch of nostalgia junkies, so attached to the past of their region to do anything in their power to keep everything exactly as it is. The average Tuscans doesn't care much about these accusations but it's true that this land seems to never change at all in the centuries. Despite some corners of our cities seem stuck in the Renaissance, this is just an illusion. Things change, sometimes in unexpected ways. When I was little, my family used to rent a vacation flat in a small seaside resort between Leghorn and Grosseto. Aside from the great beaches and the crystal blue sea, I particularly looked forward to the peaches you could only buy there, the best I've ever eaten. According to my father, the wine was nothing to write home about. We had no idea but just a few miles from our little flat, next to a road made popular by a Nobel laureate, a remarkable character had embarked on an impossible mission: create a new wine from nothing, beating the French masters at their own game. Many laughed at his attempts and there were a few painful failures on the way but in the end the determination of Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta won the day. His "alien" wine, which had nothing to share with Tuscan winemaking tradition, is considered by many experts as the best wine on the planet. The tale of how this nobleman that loved nature, thoroughbred and wine managed to turn his impossible dream into reality is as fascinating as not widely known. That's why this week What's Up Tuscany will bring you to Bolgheri, on the Etruscan Coast, to tell you the story of the Sassicaia, the "new wine" that has taken the world by storm. Let us know if you like this kind of episode or if you'd rather us talk about food, local specialties, travel tips or hidden corners of our region. Email: podcast@larno.itFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/larno.itTwitter: @arno_it / @WhatsupTuscanyI LINK ALLE FONTIhttps://www.poderiarcangelo.it/significato-dei-cipressi-in-toscana/https://magazine.verdidea.com/it/blog/il-cipresso-segno-distintivo-del-paesaggio-toscano-storia-sacralita-e-usi-nella-cultura-rurale-204https://www.tuscanypeople.com/cipressi-in-toscana/https://italyze.me/scopri/curiosita/cipressi-toscana/https://www.sinergiaverde.it/il-cipresso-da-simbolo-della-morte-a-simbolo-dellamore/https://www.codiferro.it/il-cipresso-la-sentinella-verde-del-paesaggio-in-toscana/BACKGROUND MUSICPipe Choir - Bom Bom Breakthrough (Instrumental)Incompetech - Leopard Print ElevatorWayne John Bradley - SummercyclePipe Choir - A Midnight on Jaquay (Instrumental)Wayne John Bradley - Blues Rock Original InstrumentalAll released under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licensehttps://soundcloud.com/pipe-choir-2/pipe-choir-bom-bom-breakthrough-creative-commons-instrumentalhttps://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1500077https://soundcloud.com/ayneohnradley/summercycle-original-indie-style-instrumental-creative-commonshttps://soundcloud.com/pipe-choir-2/pipechoir-a-midnight-on-jaquay-instrumentalhttps://soundcloud.com/ayneohnradley/blues-rock-original-instrumentalcreative-commonshttp://www.pipechoir.com/

Many lovers of our region envy us "natives" as we are lucky enough to live a few miles from a wealth of historic, architectural and natural landmarks unparalleled anywhere else. Sometimes, though, living in a postcard-picture region has a long list of drawbacks that can turn your life into a nightmare. Ask the residents of the many towns and villages that are touched from mass tourism for reference. The arrival of hordes of tourists makes that many of the historic shops downtown are replaced by restaurants, bars, ice cream and souvenir shops overflowing with all sorts of tacky knick-knacks that have nothing to do with the products of our land. Lured by the prospects of renting to tourists, many landlords turn their flats into bed and breakfasts or places to offer on AirBnB. The locals, sooner or later, move away, starting a vicious cycle that in a few short years turns a vibrant community in a desert that comes to life only during the summer months. More and more towns are therefore turned into open air museums, where the most vital members of the community are slowly cast aside. Looking for the lowest common denominator to lure tourists have pushed local governments to cast aside centuries old traditions to try to reinvent themselves as beacons of "high culture". The events they organize sometimes lure wealthier tourists but have nothing to do with our real culture. How can we make sure that Tuscany isn't turned into a sort of "Renaissance Disneyland"? As far as we're concerned, we should go back to our centuries-old traditions. Our popular culture has nothing "low" about it, we should stop being ashamed of it. Tuscany lovers from all over the world would be thankful for it. What is your take on it? Are you aware of events and initiatives that are trying to recover old traditions in towns and cities in your area?
