Four time Tony Awards nominee David Korins lets us into his world as he talks about his creative process and the intricacies of set design. He shares insights into his work's detailed and often granular nature, emphasizing the importance of even the smallest elements in creating a believable world for actors and audiences alike. He discusses set design for complex productions like “Beetlejuice”, and how he and director Alex Timbers viewed the house as a character itself, which led to numerous model versions to perfect the design. For “Hamilton”, he recounts starting with imaginative sketches and how the final design emerged through collaboration and feedback. While it might not make sense to the audience at times, David underscores the importance of (unseen) detailed set elements, and how they play an important role in helping actors perform authentically. He reflects on coming up with set designs for different mediums and finding new techniques to make his visions come to life, highlighting the evolving role of technology in set design and using Dear Evan Hansen and “The Who's Tommy” as examples. With countless visions realized, David reveals that ultimately, he gets his motivation from the desire to help others realize their own. David Korins is an internationally recognized award-winning creative director and designer responsible for creating 360-degree, fully immersive, holistic experiences for some of the biggest stars, brands, and events worldwide and in theatre and Broadway. He brought to life the environments for smash hits like “Hamilton”, “Dear Evan Hansen”, “Beetlejuice”, and “Mrs. Doubtfire”, among many others. He's worked as a creative director for Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Sia, and Andrea Bocelli to bring their musical visions to the stage. His film and TV experience includes series on HBO, CBS, Bravo, IFC, and PBS. He received the 2016 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special for “Grease: Live”. His scenic designs were seen last season in the play, “Just for Us”, and this season's “Here Lies Love” and “The Who's Tommy”. Last week we the wonderful singer and actress Olivia Newton John. This multi platinum recording artist, won 9 grammies, sold over 100 million records and even holds a Guinness World Record for shortest gap between number one albums, an unbelievable 154 days, but it was the movie Grease which catapulted her into super-stardom. Grease was the most successful musical of all time and it's no wonder. With great performance from John Travolta, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conway and, of course, Olivia Newton John, Grease is a silly joyous and endlessly entertaining film. John and Steve thought the only way to do this film justice was to go live with it on their YouTube channel, this Sunday, September 4th at 5PM Pacific Time. Hamilton director Tommy Kail is back again this week and I am reminded, by Tommy, that no one thinks I'm laid back. In this episode Tommy talks about the casting process including how Hamilton has the feeling of a family reunion, and he gives his opinion on what happens in the very last moment of the show. In non-Hamilton related topics, Tommy tells the story of how he and Lin-Manuel Miranda ended up in the Sex and the City movie, his experience directing Grease LIVE!, and why "Mona Lisa" by Slick Rick is a defining song for him. Thomas Kail won a Tony for directing Hamilton on Broadway. Now he's up for an Emmy after directing the TV musical Grease: Live on Fox. He tells us how having a specific vision for your project up front can save money in the long run. Then, actor Sterling K. Brown, also Emmy-nominated for his portrayal of Chris Darden on the FX limited series The People vs. O.J. Simpson, shares how he transformed into the complicated prosecutor.
We interrupt your August to get you in the room with the guy who created the Room Where it Happens...it's "Hamilton" Set Designer David Korins! David and Cory chat about the evolution of his Tony nominated set for the cultural phenomenon and the myriad of ideas, inspirations, and evolutions that led up to the set we see today. He also takes us into the design process for "Grease Live" and how he and Tommy Kail created an immersive, interactive world that set a new bar for live television musicals. Other topics include David's strong social media presence and how he's using Instragram to reveal a part of the process not usually shared, how he's grown his studio into a full-service design firm with often over a dozen employees, how he utilizes his array of assistants and associates, and how setting new goals each year helps inform the projects he takes on and the relationships he pursues. David is a giant in the world of scenic and production design with projects ranging from theatre to retail, to film and TV, to restaurants and industrials, but if you want to hear a Non-Stop account of What Comes Next, why he wouldn't be Satisfied to Take a Break, and how he continues to Blow Us All Away, then Meet Him Inside our exclusive interview. In this episode, your hosts talk about Grease: Live, the newest live TV musical to air on US television. Shannon spends a lot of time reveling in the new age of theatre that we're heading towards, obviously taking a moment to reference the wonder that is Hamilton. Becca spends time questioning the moral of Grease and digressing into a discussion about the Shrek franchise. Oh listeners, if only we had the rights to music from Grease! We would be singing "Hopelessly Devoted to You" because we love you all so much. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other.
