Kevin Stoller is joined by longtime educator and podcast host Steve Miletto to unpack the 1984 film Teachers, a gritty dramedy that offers an unflinching critique of the American public school system. Directed by Arthur Hiller and starring Nick Nolte, Teachers dives headfirst into the dysfunction, bureaucracy, and burnout often hidden behind school walls. Set in a troubled urban high school, the story centers on idealistic teacher Alex Jurel, who's caught between his desire to make a difference and a system that seems determined to maintain the status quo. With subplots involving a mentally ill teacher who was never removed, a student lawsuit, and apathetic staff, the movie blurs the line between satire and sobering reality. Kevin and Steve discuss how many of the themes from Teachers—such as disengaged leadership, systemic failure, and student disillusionment—still resonate in today's schools. Their conversation explores what's changed (and what hasn't) in the decades since the film's release, the importance of strong school culture, and how educators can lead with purpose in the face of institutional challenges. It's a raw and honest discussion about the role of teachers, the need for systemic change, and the heart it takes to truly connect with students. Takeaways: Teachers (1984) offers a satirical yet sobering critique of the American public school system, many of which still resonate today. The character of Alex Jurel represents the struggle of passionate educators trying to make a difference within a broken system. The episode explores how authentic relationships and emotional intelligence are still the most powerful tools educators have. The discussion underscores the mental health toll on both students and teachers in rigid, outdated school environments. Despite the challenges, the film and the conversation both reinforce why committed, caring educators matter more than ever. About Steve Miletto: Steven Miletto, EdD has been an educator in Georgia(US) for 38 years. He has served public school families as a history teacher, assistant principal, high school principal, and RESA (Regional Education Service Agency) Executive Director in the Heart of Georgia RESA (8 years) and now with North Georgia RESA (3years). They're here! Join BP, Coop and Justin as we analyse the iconic original Poltergeist movie. Poltergeist is a 1982 American supernatural horror film directed by Tobe Hooper and written by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais, and Mark Victor from a story by Spielberg. It stars JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, and Beatrice Straight, and was produced by Spielberg and Frank Marshall. Plot Poltergeist focuses on a suburban family whose home is invaded by malevolent ghosts that abduct their youngest daughter. In the years since its release, the film has been recognized as a horror classic. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, named by the Chicago Film Critics Association as the 20th-scariest film ever made. Steven Spielberg involvement Accounts differ as to the level of Spielberg's involvement, but it is clear that he was frequently on set during filming and exerted significant creative control. For that reason, some have said that Spielberg should be considered the film's co-director or even main director, though both Spielberg and Hooper have disputed this. Sequels and Remake The film was followed by Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986), Poltergeist III (1988), as well as a 2015 remake, but none had the critical success of the original. The Poltergeist Curse The Poltergeist franchise is believed by some to be cursed due to the premature deaths of several people associated with the film (including Heather O'Rourke and Dominique Dunne), a notion that was the focus of an E! True Hollywood Story. Poltergeist was also featured on Season 1, episode 3 of Cursed Films. Popular Culture "Bad Dream House", the first segment of "Treehouse of Horror", the first episode of the annual The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Halloween specials, is partly a parody of Poltergeist. Spice Girls pays homage to the film in their 1997 music video for the song "Too Much". The Family Guy episode "Petergeist", Peter Griffin discovers an Indian burial ground when he attempts to build a multiplex in a backyard. When he takes an Indian chief's skull, a poltergeist invades the Griffins' home. The episode used some of the same musical cues heard in the film and recreates several of its scenes. American Dad! also parodied the film with the season 10 episode "Poltergasm", in which the Smith house has become haunted by Francine's unsatisfied sex drive, and Roger plays Ruby Zeldastein, a parody of Tangina. The 2001 comedy horror film Scary Movie 2 parodies the movie's clown doll attack in Robbie's bedroom, as well as Diane's levitation. #poltergeist #theotherside #ghost #haunt #movie #horror #1982 #80shorror #carolanne #jobethwilliams #reverendkane #tangina #clown #familyguy #drawntogether #podcast #completeguidetohorror #stevenspielberg #screamqueens

Playwright and performer Sandra Tsing Loh returns to the podcast (after four years!) to discuss her surprise hit play Madwomen of the West, which featured a superstar cast including Caroline Aaron, Marilu Henner, Melanie Mayron, and JoBeth Williams. After the Los Angeles theater establishment deemed the show too woman-centric, Sandra mounted an independent production, which she eventually took to New York and London. She now has a new one-woman show — a 70-minute "You'll Never Eat Lunch In This Town Again”-style rant — about the “journey” of that production called I'll Burn That Bridge When I Get To It. I'll Burn That Bridge When I Get To It will be performed for just two nights at the Odyssey Theater in Los Angeles. November 16 and November 23. Info and tickets here. GUEST BIO Sandra Tsing Loh is the author of several books, including "The Madwoman in the Volvo: My Year of Raging Hormones," which was selected as one of the New York Times' 100 Most Notable Books. Her previous book, "Mother on Fire," was inspired by her hit solo show about Los Angeles public education. Her off-Broadway solo shows include "Aliens in America" and "Bad Sex With Bud Kemp." Her comic memoirs include The New York Times New and Noteworthy "Madwoman and the Roomba"; The New York Times 100 Notable Books "Madwoman in the Volvo"; "Mother on Fire"; "A Year in Van Nuys"; and "Depth Takes a Holiday." The Los Angeles Times named her 1998 novel "If You Lived Here, You'd Be Home By Now" a 100 Best Fiction Book. (Bonus) The Day After is an American television film that first aired on November 20, 1983 on the ABC television network. The film postulates a fictional war between the NATO forces and the Warsaw Pact over Germany that rapidly escalates into a full-scale nuclear exchange between the United States and the Soviet Union. The action itself focuses on the residents of Lawrence, Kansas; Kansas City, Missouri; and several family farms near American missile silos.[1] The cast includes JoBeth Williams, Steve Guttenberg, John Cullum, Jason Robards, and John Lithgow. The film was written by Edward Hume, produced by Robert Papazian, and directed by Nicholas Meyer. The film was broadcast on Soviet state television in 1987,[2] during the negotiations on Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. The producers demanded the Russian translation conform to the original script and the broadcast not be interrupted by commentary.[3] More than 100 million people, in nearly 39 million households, watched the film during its initial broadcast.[4][5][6] With a 46 rating and a 62% share of the viewing audience during the initial broadcast, the film was the seventh-highest-rated non-sports show until then, and in 2009 it set a record as the highest-rated television film in US history.[6]
"Now clear your minds. It knows what scares you. It has from the very beginning. Don't give it any help, it knows too much already. Now, open the door." It's our season six premiere and we watched "Poltergeist" from 1982 and this house is clean! Poltergeist may very well be the definition of "Mama Slay Cinema" with JoBeth Williams, Beatrice Straight and the legendary Zelda Rubinstein bustin' ghosts and saving the children from the other side. Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper re-wrote the haunted house trope bringing it to a brand new house in a sleepy suburb and a generation never looked at a staticy T.V. the same way again. The creepy lullaby score by Jerry Goldsmith only adds to the Amblin-esque quality of this '80s classic and not for nothing but Craig T. Nelson was making us feel some type of way serving '80s dad realness and we thank him for his service. Two hours of upper-middle-class naval-gazing? A poison pill of nostaliga? An exericize in self-loathing? A critique of ex-hippies who sold out? Or an attempt at excusing "going straight" and embracing being a yuppie? Maybe it's all those things. Or maybe that's putting too much weight to put on a movie that's mostly a small drama about people coming together after a friend's suicide. WoHos!This week we looked at two movies related to Ghosts: POLTERGEIST (1982) & THE OTHERS.POLTERGEIST deals with the sins of capitalism and consumerism in the guise of some disruptove ghosties. Mac enjoyed this more than I did. I felt super sad at the depiction of the teenage daughter as an object of sexual attention and nothing much else.Strong performances by JoBeth Williams, Beatrice Straight, Zelda Rubenstein, and Craig T. Nelson together with the gnarly practical effects are enough to recommend this film for both of us. We give it 4 TV's!I was much more jazzed about the atmospheric THE OTHER by the ever-impressive filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar. Mac and I split on the rewatchability of this film. What do you think?I gave it 4.25 keys and Mac gave it a straight 4 keys. This ep is tangent-heavy. We talk about oversharing strangers, materialism, the 80s and what should be left to the dustpin of history as well as ownership/property, photographing dead people, and the relationship between mind and body.Coming up next are two special shows featuring friends of the show and esteemed WoHos, Stefan MacDonald discussing VIDEODROME and Martin Harries discussing DR. TERROR's HOUSE OF HORRORS.On the next main show, we will be covering films about aliens: STARSHIP TROOPERS & SLASH/BACK.Thank you for all your support. A dark and sober look at the consequences of a nuclear war between the US and USSR, full of panic and confusion, and surprisingly light on sensationalism, released at the height of the Cold War. Still one of the highest-rated tv programs of all time, and possibly influential enough to get Reagan to come to the table for armament talks. Starring Jason Robards, JoBeth Williams, John Cullum, Steve Guttenberg, John Lithgow, Amy Madigan, and William Allen Young. Directed by Nicholas Meyer and written by Edward Hume. As All Hallows' Eve approaches with a creeping intensity, Spooktober Spooktacular continues with two iconic cinematic ghost stories that have left an indelible impact with audiences of every subsequent generation: Poltergeist and The Sixth Sense. But before we exercise these spirits, we unpack and sort through our thoughts on the latest Martin Scorsese's historical epic Killers of the Flower Moon, look for answers in the satisfying labyrinth of The Blair Witch Project, and muse over the highs and lows of Hulu's small screen comedy-mystery Only Murders in the Building. Join us as we enter a pair of old dark houses that is our double feature: listen as we try to suss out the Spielbergian elements within Tobe Hooper's 1982 supernatural horror before taking stock of the innumerable hallmarks that at once put Shyamalan on the map in 1999 and established a formula he's yet to ever succeed outside of. In the pop culture pantheon there are those few and proud performers who have indelibly imprinted the landscape to the point where our digital age invites new fans to discover and embrace their iconic work. Among these are Dinah Manoff and JoBeth Williams.Dinah breathed delightful life into Pink Lady Marty Maraschino in Grease. She has starred in Soap, Empty Nest and Neil Simon's You Oughta Be In Pictures. JoBeth's portrayal of Diane Freeling in Poltergeist is on repeat every Halloween and her turn in the generation-defining drama, The Big Chill is a boomer must. These two ground-breaking creators have much to share with us, including their exciting new projects.Dinah's brilliantly hilarious work of fiction is called The Real True Hollywood Story of Jackie Gold. We recommend you listen to the audio version, performed by a cast of gifted actors. Dinah wrote what she knows but not exactly. Jackie is a world famous, tabloid darling narrating her story from deep within a coma induced by an ill-fated, paparazzi dodging balcony leap. Dinah was simply raised by show-biz parents Lee Grant and Arnold Manoff in the star-sprinkled Malibu Colony.Dinah shares her mom's journey from being Dinah's harshest critic to her biggest fan girl, and the harrowing story of her dad's McCarthy-era blacklisting. We also learn how Dinah's parenting of her own kids has taken a very different path.JoBeth is currently starring, with Peter Strauss in the stage play, Love Among The Ruins. It is running through November 5th at North Hollywood's El Portal Theatre. JoBeth and Peter are taking on roles portrayed by Katharine Hepburn and Sir Laurence Olivier and rising beautifully to that challenge! She comes to us with spooky, inside-Poltergeist secrets, corset-wearing horror stories from Wyatt Earp, and tips on how to handle a nude scene with a five-year-old co-star from Kramer vs. Kramer. And, as President emeritus, JoBeth shares how we can all lend assistance to struggling actors through the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.Plus, Weezy is strongly recommending Timothy Egan's disturbing examination of the KKK in the 1920s, A Fever In The Heartland. And Fritz is very keen on Ken Burns' American Buffalo on PBS and Amazon Prime. All that plus an inspiring clip from Illinois Governor J.B. Peter Strauss burst on to the scene in the wildly popular 1976 miniseries "Rich Man, Poor Man" as successful entrepreneur Rudy Jordache, alongside Nick Nolte as the hard luck brother, Tom. He went to a prolific career on film, television and stage. His most recent role was headlining "Love Amid the Ruins" with JoBeth Williams at the Laguna Playhouse, and he also recently starred in "The Outgoing Tide" here for the Ojai Performing Arts Theater nonprofit group. He won an Emmy in 1979 for "The Jericho Mile" about a prison lifer who trains for the Olympics. It was Michael Mann's first directing credit. In a sign of his range, Strauss also played the President of the United States opposite Ice Cube in "XXX: State of the Union." We talk about his wide-ranging career with hundreds of acting credits. He has called Ojai home for more than 35 years and is deeply involved with horticulture, and was the spokesperson for Miracle-Gro for years. He travels widely collecting plants, specializing in succulents. We talk about Ojai and climate change, how the town has changed over the decades and what we need to do to secure the future. We did not talk about the transmigration of souls, Ernie Kovacs or summer homes in Nantucket.
This week we are catching up with the incredible actress JoBeth Williams. JoBeth is known for her memorable roles in The Big Chill and Poltergeist. Thank you for listening to the following films podcast. Today I'm joined by Linda Yellen, Jill Eikenberry, Patricia Richardson, and Jobeth Williams the director and stars of the new film CHANTILLY BRIDGE. For the first half of the interview I'm joined by JoBeth Williams and after the break in the second half I have a group interview with Linda, Jill and Patricia. Chantilly Bridge reunites a group of lifelong, steadfast friends who are still – in their later years -- chasing their dreams, fighting injustices, and sticking up for their convictions. The women lay bare their lives and deal with important issues that impact all women with humor, humility, humanity, and love. No topic escapes the razor-like wit and insight of these women: equality, sex, menopause, mortality, feminism, parenthood, careers, love, and even “me-too” moments. While women often feel invisible in the world, this film highlights who they are and what they care about. We experience what women are truly like and what they discuss in a setting where no men are present. Chantilly Bridge is also about reconnecting with old friends from the past and the beauty of a shared history. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/followingfilms/support

This week, the 2 Guys deliver up another “Return Slot” episode where they deep dive a specific older film. To kick off our October celebration of horror this year, this episode focuses on the classic 1982 Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg collaboration, Poltergeist, starring Heather O'Rourke, JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, and Zelda Rubenstein. Finally, if you have your own ideas for the podcast, you can also email us with list suggestions at 2guys5movies@gmail.com, and thank you all for listening and your support.
We begin our 7th Scary Movie Month with this 461st Ellises' Analysis. Poltergeist is a slow-burn horror show with an insane finale as Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg throw a bunch of angry ghosts at the loving Freeling family. The movie also has a sense of humour to balance out at least some of the trauma these little children go through. Full marks to the cast. Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams, the novice actors playing their kids and the adults playing the bizarro ghost chasers all keep it real amidst all the pandemonium. We also talked about this movie's supposed curse, about who really directed it and about whether or not it's actually scary to 2 middle-aged podcasters. So don't dig a pool in the back yard if there are vengeful dead people down there, but DO toss your television out into the hall and then GO INTO THE LIGHT (of your cell phone) as we hash out Poltergeist. As for a good way to keep you up at night, so you can battle the spectral kidnappers hiding in your electronics, order Sparkplug Coffee. It's spooky season, so you know what that means - Spook 'em Up Month! A totally common phrase to describe horror movies, which is what we'll be focusing on this October. Directed by Hooper and written by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais and Mark Victor from a story by Spielberg. Starring JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, Beatrice Straight, Dominique Dunne, Oliver Robins, Heather O'Rourke, and Zelda Rubinstein.

Music - Ambient Background Music - Cicada 3301 - CO.AG Music The story behind the screams - The Seaford Poltergeist - Poltergeist 1982Movie Plot - The Freelings are a typical suburban family. Husband Steve sells real estate in their ever-expanding subdivision and Diane is a stay-at-home mom caring for their three kids, Dana, Robbie, and little Carol Anne. Strange things begin to happen in the house, however: cupboard doors open on their own, furniture rearranges itself and chairs go sliding across the kitchen floor. It's a bit of whimsy at first but soon becomes deadly severe when Carol Anne vanishes into a nether world where, oddly, she can only be communicated with through the white noise on their television. A team of paranormal investigators moves into the house. Still, the forces that kidnapped are evil and powerful requiring the services of Tangina, a woman who has dealt with this situation before.Real-life Story The Seaford ‘poltergeist' was an episode of unexplained disturbances reported by a family in Seaford, Long Island, New York, in 1958. The incidents, which were widely publicized, included bottles losing their tops and spilling contents, and household objects and furniture moving with no apparent cause. Investigating parapsychologists attributed the cause to psychokinesis centering on a 12-year-old boy, while skeptics offered explanations in terms of trickery.Crazy Movie Trivia Two of the film's cast members were subsequently murdered: (1) Dominique Dunne (Dana Freeling) was strangled by her former boyfriend John Thomas Sweeney in the driveway of her West Hollywood home on October 30, 1982, and, having been declared brain dead, died five days later at the age of 22 and (2) Lou Perryman (Pugsley) was killed with an ax by a 26-year-old man named Seth Christopher Tatum in Austin, Texas on April 1, 2009. He was 67 years old at the time of his death.JoBeth Williams had a supernatural experience during the making of the film. Whenever she came home from filming, the pictures on the walls of her house were crooked. Every time she fixed them they would hang crooked again. Zelda Rubinstein also had an experience when a vision of her dog came to her and said goodbye to her. Hours later, her mother called her and told Rubinstein that her dog had passed away that very day. Julian Beck (Kane in Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986)) died in 1985 after a long battle with stomach cancer; Will Sampson (Taylor in Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986)) died of complications from a heart-lung transplant; and Heather O'Rourke (Carol Anne in all three movies) died in 1988 at age 12 from cardiac arrest caused by septic shock from a bowel obstruction caused by intestinal stenosis after being misdiagnosed with Crohn's Disease in 1987.Leave a rate/review if you enjoyed this episode.
