It's time to find a Cool Rider as we discuss the standalone sequel ‘Grease 2' starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Maxwell Caulfield. Released in 1982 we return to the famous Rydell High with its T Birds and Pink Ladies. Despite missing the main stars of the original film there are lots of cameo returners and a new batch of catchy songs. Join us if you're a Girl for all Seasons!
We gotta go back, back, back to school AGAIN! Sandy's cousin, Michael (Maxwell Caufield) has come back to Rydell High under the watchful eye of Frenchy (Didi Conn). Trying to fit in with the T Birds (Adrian Zmed, Christopher McDonald, Peter Frechette, Leif Green) he realizes he needs a motorcycle in order to be the Cool Rider that head Pink Lady, Stephanie (Michelle Pfeiffer) needs. The rest of the Ladies (Lorna Luft, Alison Price, Maureen Teefy) question Stephanie's loyalty to the gang while being the girls for all seasons.
Our girl for all seasons Eureka O'Hara joins me to talk the mirth, magic and mayhem of the undercover feminist cult classic GREASE 2! We get into what a T-Bird could mean these days, the majesty of Michelle Pfeiffer, shooting dance numbers before the songs are ready, the chaotic grandiosity of producer & impresario Allan Carr, the impact of RSO & Robert Stigwood on our culture, fan theories about Grease's Sandy - and our own theories about Frenchie, John Travolta, Maxwell Caulfield's brief moment of Hollywood Heat, Cool Rider and much much more. There's gotta be more to life than just makin out. We watched Grease 2 with the hilarious Drew Droege and we want more than the boy next door - we want hell on wheels! It’s more than just a gender swapped rehash of Grease - it gave the world one miss Michelle Marie Pfeiffer. The amount of gorgeousness when Stephanie Zinoni (Pfeiffer) and Michael Carrington (Maxwell Caulfield) share the screen can power a small town. The new crop of T-Birds fronted by Adrian Zmed are WAY cute and the Pink Ladies are serving Lewks- not the least of which is Lorna Luft giving full drag queen. This movie is full on bananas, with more grown adults playing teens, decidedly un-50’s music and the flimsiest secret identity since Clark Kent’s horn-rimmed glasses. We still think “Cool Rider” could have been a hit on the radio. On this week's LadyWatch agenda: Ryan and Jason try to uncover Wilson mysteries of the Heart, plus Martha Stewart ruins everyone's day at Yankee Stadium, the NutriBullet that is Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole in Broadway's 'War Paint', Jane Seymour brings a battery of fragrances to a store near you (and not a whiff of Dr Quinn to be found), Maggie Smith's complicated relationship with Downton Abbey continues, Sheryl Crow has words for Madonna's words, Georgia Engel is a cool rider on a Vespa, Dee Wallace and her bloody and controversial new artsploitation venture with a deformed Cleetus in the Outback, Salma Hayek throwing phones at dinner parties, and a lot of talk about celebrity penises. Sorry about the last part.
Greetings Earthlings. We come in peace. To watch Grease. Grease Two. Here you will hear recorded evidence of our experience. That’s Jim, Maddy, and me. Instead of the traditional narrative I’ve used to introduce podcasts, I thought I’d give you various [thoughts] and “quotes” from the experience. [Have you heard about the fan theory that Sandy was in a coma throughout the entirety of Grease and at the very end died? It’s a thing. The writer of the musical, Jim Jacobs, disputed it…here. So I suppose it’s untrue. But it’s still a compelling theory.] [Jim, a girl for all seasons, ah-ah-ahhh…ah-ah-ahh…ah-ah-ahh.] “In biker heaven, Cool Rider and Stephanie get to be together in matching jackets.” [There is a stage adaptation of Grease 2. I think I wanna see it.] [The song from the rock-a-hula luau, which I always sing as, “hock a loogie luau,” sounds, looks, and feels like one of those horrid Kidsongs videos from about 10 years ago. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re probably better off leaving well enough alone.] “Everything is better with twins.” “Who doesn’t want a pool of enchantment?” “How do we rhyme together? Oh good…feather.” “Does pause EVER work?” [Ultimately, I believe the entire thesis of Grease 2 is summed up in the diner scene with Michael and Stephanie talking about hamburgers and Hamlet. Stephanie says, “You know I figured out what Hamlet’s big problem is.” She then gets immediately side-tracked by the fact that the diner never puts ketchup on the hamburger. “How can you eat a hamburger with no ketchup?” She’s absolutely right. “Shoot that over here.” Having fixed the hamburger situation, she hits us with this spot-on, low-brow, assessment of Hamlet. And me, which is why I now love the movie. “You know what his problem is? No laughs. The guy’s gotta lighten up, right?”] I mean, right!? Anyway, today we present to you the thrilling and hilarious conclusion of our time spent with the T-Bones, Pink Ladies, et al, “Matching Jackets in Biker Heaven (Grease Two, pt 3).” Oh…music. It’s all Beatles today. “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” and “Blackbird.” Two of my favorites, and appropriate for this anniversary which is certainly founded in anger, sadness, and tragedy but, as is always the case if we allow it, transformed into a vessel of healing, hope, and love. God, or whatever it is you place your faith, bless you all. -G
Have you seen the movie Grease 2? Yes? Good! Do you love it? Hate it? Love to hate it? Hate to love it? Well…have I got something for you. Jen and Jim, both of whom actually love to love said sequel, sat with Greg, who had, for most of his adult life, simply hated it. Maddy came along for the ride because, a.) Jim is just awesome, b.) So is Jen, and c.) both of them consistently called Greg on his bullshit and assholery throughout the recording. You may remember the, “Llewellynsanity” trio of podcasts from several weeks back. Well, the “Grease Two” trilogy, the first of which is just below, is a continuation of the same evening. That means quite a few ounces of alcohol have flowed by the time you hear Greg, quite obviously inebriated and having just tripped over the recorder and lost an entire podcast’s length of material, say, “Driven to Drink.” Here you’ll also hear the classic (…classic, really? Perhaps…) songs, “Cool Rider,” and “Reproduction.” Strap in, comb some oil-based pomade through your locks, and throw on your goggles and helmet so that nobody recognizes you. We present to you, “The Balmudo Triangle (Grease Two, pt 1).”
Masks and lycra firmly in place, Erica and Emily fly their way through Dynamic Duets or Duos or whatever the Why Did They Air This On Thanksgiving? episode was called. Actually, they kinda liked it, but you can piece stuff like that together by listening to the episode. Oh, and Marley still sucks and someone needs to sing Cool Rider from Grease 2 before Emily explodes. Agree with us on our Facebook group or send email to gleekast@gmail.com. Happy Thanksgiving, as if ANYONE AT FOX CARES.
