This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Allyssa Leaton (@thelesbianpassport), a lesbian travel content creator, and talk about her experiences traveling as a solo queer woman. Allyssa grew up in the Bible Belt not knowing the word ‘lesbian', let alone what it meant. Now she proudly serves as much-needed queer representation in the travel space, inspiring hopeful LGBTQ+ travelers and finding all the best gay hotspots around the world.  Although Allyssa has visited more than 20 countries at only 25 years old, she does not make her travel decisions with ticking boxes in mind. Instead of always going to a new country, she has made repeat trips to her favorite places, including Buenos Aires (the city she credits as having the most sapphic-inclusive queer scene) and Iceland (a place where being gay was such a nonissue that Allyssa felt cultural whiplash). As an introvert, Allyssa has found herself thriving as a solo traveler, loving the freedom provided by solitude. I'm joined by Commercial Pilot and Content Creator, Allyssa VanMeter, also known as FlyAllyssa on Instagram and Tiktok. Allyssa didn't experience aviation until she was an adult, when she took a helicopter tour over the Lake of the Ozarks. The new perspective of the world was enough to let the aviation bug take hold. Allyssa was a successful hairstylist and salon owner. When she found aviation, she wasn't exploring it as a career change. She flew for fun and became exposed to all sorts of aviation along the way, attending any event she could afford to. She started an Instagram account out of her pride for being a pilot, which expanded into sharing photos or her flying and her trips. This network expanded into a large following, where she continues to inspire others as she shares her adventures in aviation. Allyssa would eventually work to realize a dream in flying, now working as a commercial pilot for commercial real estate. Hear Allyssa's story on this episode of Fly the Transition. I haven't shared much about my sexuality on this podcast, but I identify as bisexual (or possbily pansexual- still figuring that out), but I thought it was really important to release an episode about what being a queer traveler can be like because representation matters!  I will say I am fully aware that Allyssa's experience as a lesbian traveler is not all-encompassing of what every LGBTQ+ person will experience on their travelers.  I had a lovely conversation with Allyssa Leaton! Suicide Prevention  Hope and Resilience:  My Sister's Story  TRIGGER WARNING: Please note that this episode contains a discussion of suicide, self-injurious behavior, depression and/or reference of other mental health disorders that may act as triggers.   In this very personal episode of Pediatric Meltdown, Dr Gaggino talks with her sister, Alyssa, who attempted to take her own life 19 years ago. As with many who attempt suicide, there were many factors that may have contributed. Risk factors include a history of trauma, mental health disorders, relationship difficulties that can all add up until the individual is overwhelmed and feels hopeless. Dr. Gaggino and her sister talk about the dark times, but also talk about Alyssa's recovery and incredible resilience. But first, some facts and figures  Suicide is defined as death caused by self-directed injurious behavior with intent to die as a result of the behavior. A suicide attempt is a non-fatal, self-directed, potentially injurious behavior with intent to die as a result of the behavior. A suicide attempt might not result in injury. Suicidal ideation refers to thinking about, considering, or planning suicide Suicide was the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10-14 and 25-34 , the third leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 15-24, and the fourth leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 35 and 44. In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak speaks with Allyssa King of the American Royal Society. The American Royal Livestock Show is happening again this fall! The American Royal has been Advocating for Agriculture Since 1899. It's a non-profit organization based in Kansas City since 1899. We provide opportunities for youth and adults from around the country to compete in our Livestock Show, ProRodeo, and Horse Shows. Many people know us for our World Series of Barbecue®, which is actually our largest fundraiser. Events including the barbecue allow us to give over $1 million annually for youth scholarships and support agriculture education programs.Allyssa King began her career at the American Royal as an intern nearly 14 years ago. Upon completing her internship, Allyssa came to the realization of her passion for the American Royal. Allyssa was given an opportunity in 2012 to expand her skills, with the Equine Manager position. The following five years found Allyssa, developing and expanding the horse events. 2017 found Allyssa back at her roots as the American Royal Livestock Manager. Getting back to what she loved, Allyssa expanded, increased and developed the American Royal Livestock Show helping to make it what it is today. Allyssa is proud and blessed to be able to work along so many amazing team members and volunteers, that all make the American Royal Livestock Show a success. In the past five years, the Royal has expanded breeding cattle shows, breeding lamb and goat shows and the Royal Elite Drive.Allyssa is active in her community as an Executive on the Johnson County Fair Board and volunteers at the Johnson County spring livestock shows. 2022 finds Allyssa moving on to her next adventure at the American Royal as the Director of Communications.
