Melanie and I talk about Object of Desire all the time and boy, oh boy, this movie really drives home why it's so important. The writers didn't go for the obvious choice here and it makes the movie, and the protagonist, so much more interesting because what Judy wants more than anything in the world is not to perform, but to be with her kids. In terms of tension, it's hit-and-miss. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with David Fantle & Tom Johnson, Authors, “C'mon, Get Happy: The Making of Summer Stock” About Harvey's guest: Today's guests,  David Fantle & Tom Johnson, are co-authors who last appeared on our show to discuss their landmark book entitled, “Hollywood Heyday: 75 Candid Interviews with Golden Age Legends”.   The interviews contained in that book were conducted when our guests were mere teenagers living in Minnesota, visiting Hollywood in the hopes of meeting movie stars.  And boy, did they ever!   Since then, our guests have gone on to have distinguished careers.   David Fantle has been interviewing, writing, and speaking about Hollywood's Golden Age stars for 45 years, and he's an adjunct professor of film at Marquette University.  Tom Johnson is a former senior editor at Netflix, and he's written movie reviews and features for many publications including E! Online, Movie-phone, and People magazine. His writing has been recognized with a Minnesota Newspaper Association achievement award and a National Hearst Foundation award.   They're here today to discuss their brand new book entitled, “C'mon, Get Happy: The Making of Summer Stock”.   This well-researched and illuminating book chronicles how Judy Garland's last MGM movie, and her 3rd and final film with co-star Gene Kelly, was conceived, cast and filmed, despite the troubled atmosphere of drama and heartache, and the sometimes overwhelming obstacles and challenges surrounding the production.   The book is jam-packed with little-known and newly uncovered details about the people in front of and behind the cameras, and it examines the enduring legacy of the movie, including some fascinating insights provided by Judy Garland's daughter Lorna Luft, Gene Kelly's daughter Kerry Kelly Novick, and other celebrities including Savion Glover, Ben Vereen, Tommy Tune and Michael Finestine.    For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about David Fantle and Tom Johnson, go to:https://www.upress.state.ms.us/Books/C/C-mon-Get-Happy #DavidFantle  #TomJohnson #harveybrownstoneinterviews

We're going back...back...back to sequels this week with the cult classic dud, "Grease 2"! It's off-kilter and amusing for about 45 minutes, and then it really goes into a ditch, but in the meantime we get Didi Conn, Lorna Luft, Eve Arden, Dodie Goodman, Adrian Zmed, Peter Frechette and of course, Michelle Pfeiffer as Stephanie, who's a total ketchup abuser and maybe kind of a jerk, and Maxwell Caulfield as the impossibly hot nerd Michael. 'Tis the Season for Ian and Pat to try something a little different! Every year the guys discuss a Christmas movie, but they're closing out 2022 with the oddly dark CBS production of The Judy Garland Christmas Show from 1963.Filmed mere days after the assassination of Garland's dear friend, John F. Kennedy, this ostensibly heartwarming holiday musical feels like the production itself has been traumatized. Garland and her real-life family invite an unseen live studio audience into their fake home for an evening of song, dance, and comedy that (especially through the lens of modernity) comes off as alternately corny, creepy, and wrong. As a matter of fact, Pat's comedy troupe, Famous in the Future, will be performing a lively send-up of the special this week. Here he talks about how A Judy Christmas came to be, and what folks can expect to see at the Den Theatre in Chicago. It's time to finish that "book report" on "Edgar Allan Poe" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 1971's You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown and 1982's Snoopy! The Musical on episode seventeen of My Favorite Flop.   ABOUT YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN Based on the characters created by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz in his comic strip Peanuts, You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown shares the story of a day in the life of everybody's favorite blockhead, Charlie Brown. The musical features music and lyrics by Clark Gesner and a book by John Gordon. Following an unprecedented run of 1,597 performances off-Broadway, the musical finally opened to mixed reviews on The Great White Way on June 1, 1971 and closed 32 performances later. Many critics had felt that much of its original charm had evaporated during the transfer. Despite that, the musical became a popular staple in the amateur theater market and is known as one of the most beloved musicals of all time. In 1998, a significantly revised version of the musical set out on a national tour before opening on Broadway the following year. It featured new dialogue by Michael Mayer, who also directed, and additional songs and orchestration written by composer Andrew Lippa. The character of Patty was replaced with Sally Brown, inspired by the same change Schulz made in the animated TV adaptation in the 1980s. The cast featured Anthony Rapp as Charlie Brown, B.D. Wong as Linus, Ilana Levine as Lucy, and Stanley Wayne Mathis as Schroeder. Also featured were Kristin Chenoweth and Roger Bart as Sally and Snoopy, with each winning the Tony award in the respective category. Despite its Tony wins, the musical failed to gain an audience and closed after just 149 performances.   Original Broadway Cast Dean Stolber as Charlie Brown Liz O'Neal as Lucy Stephen Fenning as Linus Carter Cole as Schroeder Lee Wilson as Patty Grant Cowan as Snoopy ABOUT SNOOPY! THE MUSICAL An official sequel to You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Snoopy! The Musical shares the story of a day in the life of everybody's favorite beagle, Snoopy. The musical features music by Larry Grossman, lyrics by Hal Hackady, and a book by Warren Lockhart, Arthur Whitelaw, and Michael Grace. Despite You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown's Broadway failure in 1971, it had already become a worldwide sensation, and producer Arthur Whitelaw felt that it needed a follow-up. This time, however, he would both write and direct the piece. Snoopy! The Musical premiered on December 9, 1975 at the Little Fox Theatre in San Francisco, California and, despite mixed reviews, ran for 7 months. The musical was then produced Off-Broadway at the Lamb's Theatre in 1982 starring David Garrison as Snoopy. The show performed 152 performances until it closed on May 1, 1983. The Off-Broadway production received similar reviews to the San Francisco production. Later, when Lorna Luft replaced Peppermint Patty, a new song was written for her, entitled "Hurry Up, Face". This song was used in later productions, including the West End later that year. The 1983 West End production was a critically acclaimed success and ran for 479 performances. A revised version of Snoopy! The Musical opened Texas State University in 2017 with a new song co-written by Andrew Lippa and restored material that had been cut from previous versions of the show. This version, now called The World According To Snoopy, is available to license alongside the original.   Original Off-Broadway Cast David Garrison as Snoopy Terry Kirwin as Charlie Brown Vicki Lewis as Peppermint Patty Kay Cole as Lucy Stephen Fenning as Linus Deborah Graham as Sally Brown Cathy Cahn as Woodstock

There's gotta be more to life than just makin out.  We watched Grease 2 with the hilarious Drew Droege and we want more than the boy next door - we want hell on wheels!  It’s more than just a gender swapped rehash of Grease - it gave the world one miss Michelle Marie Pfeiffer. The amount of gorgeousness when Stephanie Zinoni (Pfeiffer) and Michael Carrington (Maxwell Caulfield) share the screen can power a small town. The new crop of T-Birds fronted by Adrian Zmed are WAY cute and the Pink Ladies are serving Lewks- not the least of which is Lorna Luft giving full drag queen. This movie is full on bananas, with more grown adults playing teens, decidedly un-50’s music and the flimsiest secret identity since Clark Kent’s horn-rimmed glasses.  We still think “Cool Rider” could have been a hit on the radio. Today I spent a chunk of my day going through closets, finding discs of unlabelled photographs and other bits and pieces that have piled up in the nooks and crannies of my house. I came across a set of interviews I did at a rather loud party at the Tavern on the Green in New York City in 2009 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the release of The Wizard of Oz. That day I mixed and mingled with some of the original Munchkins like Karl Slover, who was just two feet tall when he played the first trumpeter, Villager Munchkin Ruth Duccini, member of the Lollipop Guild Jerry Maren and Judy Garland’s daughter Lorna Luft, while enjoying Wizard of Oz themed drinks like the Gin Tornado. But mostly I soaked up the stories from some of the folks who were there when Judy Garland was swept away to a technicolour OZ. Today I banged the interviews together in a podcast, the first project from the newly dubbed Isolation Studios. I enjoyed doing it and somehow the movie makes perfect sense for right now. “Someplace where there isn’t any trouble? Do you suppose there is such a place, Toto? There must be. It’s not a place you can get to by a boat or train. It’s far, far away… behind the moon… beyond the rain.”

Cabaret performances are often known for bringing alive the Great American Songbook from the 1920s through the 1950s for contemporary audiences. But modern-day cabaret does much more than preserve the past—it also promotes and fosters the new generation of American composers and creates a uniquely vibrant musical and theatrical experience for its audiences. So You Want to Sing Cabaret is the first book of its kind to examine in detail the unique vocal and nonvocal requirements for professional performance within the exciting genre of cabaret. With a foreword by cabaret legend Lorna Luft, So You Want to Sing Cabaret includes interviews from the top professionals in the cabaret industry, including Michael Feinstein, Ann Hampton Callaway, Roy Sander, Sidney Myer, Jeff Harner and many others. There are also chapters devoted to crafting your show, lyric connection, “do-it-yourself” production and promotion, and working with your musical team. David Sabella and Sue Matsuki have crafted the perfect one-volume resource for both the aspiring cabaret singer and the singing teacher who seeks to learn more about this unique art form. The So You Want to Sing series is produced in partnership with the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Like all books in the series, So You Want to Sing Cabaret features online supplemental material on the NATS website. With no movies to review and my television show "Pop Life" on hiatus I'm finding things to keep myself busy. Today I spent a chunk of my day going through closets, finding discs of unlabelled photographs and other bits and pieces that have piled up in the nooks and crannies of my house and I came across a set of interviews I did at a rather loud party at the Tavern on the Green in New York City in 2009 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the release of The Wizard of Oz. I mixed and mingled with some of the original Munchkins like Karl Slover, who was just two feet tall when he played the first trumpeter, Villager Munchkin Ruth Duccini, member of the Lollipop Guild Jerry Maren and Judy Garland's daughter Lorna Luft, while enjoying Wizard of Oz themed drinks like the Gin Tornado. But mostly I soaked up the stories from some of the folks who were there when Judy Garland was swept away to a technicolour OZ. So, I banged the interviews together in a podcast, the first project from the newly dubbed Isolation Studios. Somehow the movie makes perfect sense for right now. "Someplace where there isn't any trouble? Do you suppose there is such a place, Toto? There must be. It's not a place you can get to by a boat or train. It's far, far away... behind the moon... beyond the rain."

Almost everyone already knows the story by heart, but the  spectacle of Dorothy’s fantastic adventure never ceases to dazzle viewers no matter how many times they see it. And this time, “dazzle” is the key word, because the movie has been re-mastered for IMAX 3-D presentations.

The boys welcome the multi-talented Scott Nevins to the show this week. He's a regular on truTV's The Smoking Gun Presents, he's a cover model, he's an actor, he's a stand-up comedian, he's...damn...he's everything! This hottie updates us on his new part-time gig as the new cruise director for RSVP Vacations, he updates us on his land tour dates, we go behind-the-scenes of his hit television show, he tells us about his favorite people to impersonate, his friendship with Lorna Luft, and he even sings as Judy Garland for us. It's a conversation that was meant to be 15-minutes, but we were having so much fun, time got away from us. We think you'll dig the whole thing. The boys also discuss the douches of the week, including Pat Robertson, Rick Santorum and Carson Daly; bisexual dolphins in Australia; Scott and Steve clash over the Celebrity Apprentice; Madonna news, including her afternoon of tweets and her new Truth Or Dare perfume; the Atlantis sex scandal photo; the new Pipe underwear model who just happens to be one of the hosts' favorite DC bartenders; and, much, much more. They also discuss their latest adventures in New York City for Dale's birthday late last week, including a Human Rights Watch reception with Ricky Martin and Scott's sister; a performance of Evita on Broadway; a run in with our very own Justin Luke at his 20Something party at the XL MegaClub; and, an overnight stay at the brand new Out NYC hotel, where they found a ginger cactus in the bathroom. (Oh, and the boys partied with Swish Super Listener, Edward!) Oh, and we feature Scott & Steve's Doing Our Fitness video, from a recent trip to the gym. Looks easy...but it wasn't. At least for them. See the video at "swishedition" on YouTube. All that, plus we announce our newest Twitter winner. And if you regularly listen to all our craziness, you too could be a Swishy Prize Pack winner. This week, we announce our brand new contest. Listen carefully to learn how to win.
