Is there a place for ancient traditions like pilgrimage in our fast-paced modern world? This episode dives right into that fascinating question! We'll explore how these sacred journeys can still profoundly impact us today despite their roots in a long-gone era. This weekend, I had the chance to witness something truly special as my wife and her interfaith minister friends embarked on the final stretch of St. Cuthbert's Way to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. It was a walk not just through the shifting sands but through time itself, retracing the footsteps of monks from Melrose Abbey. Their journey involved rich rituals around water, passage, and renewal, sparking insightful shifts within participants. Just goes to show, there's always something deeply transformative waiting at the heart of a pilgrimage. But the magic of pilgrimages isn't confined to religious paths alone. Whether it's the renowned Camino de Santiago or a gruelling endurance race, these experiences challenge us, pushing us toward proving our worth to ourselves. The essence lies in undertaking a task, not because it's easy, but because it's demanding. It's about breaking through personal barriers and uncovering new aspects of ourselves. So, what do you think? Could your next big endeavor be a modern-day pilgrimage that helps you discover more about yourself? Let's chat about it some more. If this episode resonated with you, feel free to share it with a friend or drop some stars our way—trust me, they brighten our day! Until next time, thank you for joining me on this journey of exploration and discovery.
What makes the tiny island of Lindisfarne a “thin place” where the spiritual and physical worlds seem to meet? How does living in such a close-knit community shape one's identity? And what secrets lie beyond the tourist paths on this ancient sacred site? LK Wilde and J.F. Penn talk about their love of Lindisfarne.Laura is […] The post Thin Places and Tidal Shores: Lindisfarne, Holy Island, With LK Wilde appeared first on Books And Travel.
Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, is a tidal island in England connected to the mainland by a narrow road. Twice a day, the sea covers the causeway. Signs alert visitors to the dangers of crossing during high tide. Yet, tourists regularly disregard the warnings and often end up sitting atop submerged cars or swimming to raised safety huts where they can be rescued. The tide is predictable, as sure as the rising sun. And warnings are everywhere; you can’t possibly miss them. Yet, as one writer described, Lindisfarne is “where the reckless try to outrace the tide.” Proverbs tells us that it’s foolish to be “reckless and careless” (14:16 esv). A reckless person has little regard for wisdom or wise counsel and doesn’t practice attentiveness or diligent care for others (vv. 7–8). Wisdom, however, slows us down to listen and ponder so that we’re not carried away by rash emotions or half-baked ideas (v. 6). Wisdom teaches us to ask good questions and consider the implications of our actions. While a reckless person charges forward with little regard for relationships or consequences—or often truth—a “prudent [person] gives thought to his steps” (v. 15). While we’ll sometimes need to act decisively or swiftly, we can resist recklessness. As we receive and practice God’s wisdom, He’ll give us the guidance we need when we need it.

The episode was recorded on the breathtaking Holy Island of Lindisfarne, United Kingdom, where the Vikings first invaded the UK, an island you can only drive to in low tide. It was a great experience to visit, but it had a poor internet connection, so unfortunately, the audio quality of this episode is a little inadequate.
Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, lies some 11.5 miles to the south east of Berwick-upon-Tweed, just off the coast of Northumberland. Only accessible at low tide, the island still possesses a mystical air, no doubt from its time as a Christian pilgrimage site. Probably most famous as the production centre of the Lindisfarne Gospels, or the island that gave the folk-rock band Lindisfarne their name, the island was also the centre of the Cult of St Cuthbert in the Middle Ages. But what folklore or legends has the island accrued over the years? Let's find out in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! Today we are joined by author and publisher Mark Nemglan to discuss his new title from Scarlet Imprint, Avalon Working. Avalon Working is equal parts grimoire and devotional, gazeteer and visionary journey. The work passionately argues for Glastonbury as centre of emergence and initiation, a latter-day Eleusis. Through essay and ritual, the author invites readers to actively participate in the Holy Island's unfolding destiny, in partnership with its spirits and powers, to co-create its mythopoeia and, in doing so, forge a new Avalonian covenant. In the Plus show Mark goes into detail regarding the rituals and spirits associated with Glastonbury and the strange encounters people have had on the Tor and Mark shares with us his own incredible experience. A fascinating show hosted by Ruth O'Hagan in conversation with Carol McNamara in studio. Ruth and Carol spoke about Edna's funeral mass in St. Joseph's Church in Tuamgraney, her burial on Inis Cealtra/Holy Island, featuring Tommy Holland, Edna's 2nd cousin who shares some of Edna's Lineage in the footsteps of Brian Boru. There were local stories about Edna and her impact on the area, while sharing some truths that are now no longer rural legends. Joining live from Cork was Dr Maureen O' Connor, the Senior Lecturer from the School of English and Digital Humanities in UCC. Maureen brought us into the study of Edna O'Brien over the many years of her international academic career. There were several reflections on Edna, and her impact, throughout the show: - Roisin Bugler a local Poet from Mountshannon, where Edna has been laid to rest, created an incredibly beautiful poem in honour of Edna's passing. - Local writer and playwright Tara Sparling, who like Edna, is also from the village of Tuamgraney, spoke to Ruth and the listeners about growing up in a place where the immediacy of a leading role model of Irish and female writing, made writing tangible. - Trish Murphy Psychosexual Therapist and Irish Times Columnist, in a recording, offers insight on Edna's impact on sexuality and desire. Ruth also recorded several fascinating interviews on Inis Cealtra / Holy Island before and after Edna's funeral, such as John McColgan of River Dance fame as well as Journalists Helen Quinn and Marian Richardson. The show also includes some pieces of Edna's favourite music, and soundscapes from her burial on Holy Island. As originally broadcast on SBCR on Sunday 11th August 2024
Large crowds descended on East Clare today to pay their respects to the late literary great, Edna O'Brien. The Tuamgraney native was remembered as a worsdmith, extraordinary women and fabulous mother at her funeral mass this afternoon. The voice of Edna O'Brien speaking in 2015 where outlined her fearless approach to her 1963 debut novel "Country Girls" which would epitomise her legendary career to come. The book was initially censored in Ireland and denounced by the Church for highlighting taboo social issues. Throughout the course of her over 60-year vocation, O'Brien penned over 30 texts and was described during her funeral mass as someone who gave courage and spoke for those who were rendered dumb. Chief Celebrant Fr Donagh O'Brien said she was a wordsmith and a truth teller who paid the price for her bravery. St.Joseph's Church in Tuamgraney was packed to capcity for the service, with many more paying their respects watching from screens outside. Those in attendance included President Michael D.Higgins and First Lady Sabina, while Commandant Colonel Claire Mortimer represented the office of Taoiseach and Tánaiste. Irish Actor Stephen Rea was among those who delivered a reading during the ceremony, A number of gifts were also brought to the altar to celebrate Edna's life, they included copy of Ulyesses by James Joyce, a portrait of Samuel Beckett and flowers from her childhood home at Drewsboro House, which she was said to have described as "her home of homes". The French Legion of Honour was also brought up to recognise a lifetime of extraordinary achievement, as well as the budda to recognise her spiritual exploration. The eulogy was read out by Novelist Andew O'Hagan who paid tribute to Edna for wonderfully sharing her world with others. In Accordance with her wishes, Edna O'Brien was laid to rest at the ancient monastic settlement of Holy Island on Lough Derg. Speaking during the mass, her son Marcos Gelber said that although she will rightly be remembered for her literary works, she was a fabulous mother who showered her family with love.

A Clare election candidate believes he's not at a disadvantage despite living in another county and admitting he's not up to speed with local issues. Stonemason, Michael Loughrey from Gort is running for the newly formed "Irish People" party in the Ennistymon electoral area. In August, some current members of the party, including Loughrey caused controversy during a protest against a library book in East Clare when they erected a banner on the 12th century monastic tower at Holy Island, which is a protected structure. Loughrey insists he has what it takes to tackle problems in North Clare though.
review To celebrate forty years of wandering through time and space in style, the Sixth Doctor and some of his best friends are about to find themselves in the adventure of his lives... 1. The Exaltation by Jacqueline Rayner Hints of a temporal anomaly bring the Doctor and Mel to Arunopal on the day King Otho steps down as ruler. But Otho has a dilemma - which of his five sons should succeed to the throne? He has a deadly game in mind to solve the problem - and the target is a certain Time Lord... 2. Escape from Holy Island by Chris Chapman The history books tell us that on the 8th of June, 793 AD, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne was burnt to the ground by Viking raiders. But history also records that "fiery dragons were seen flying in the sky" - can that be true? With time running out, the Doctor, Peri and a young HG Wells mobilise the island's monks as the real raiders of Lindisfarne thunder over the North Sea - and they don't look like Vikings... 3. Sibling Rivalry by Robert Valentine The Doctor, Constance and Flip are stuck on an alien planet in the middle of a civil war. To make matters worse, the Sontarans have invaded. To make matters worse still, two of the dastardly quins - the volatile Clarent and the odious Dellan - are both on the scene... and the Doctor may not survive their furious competition. 4. Children of the Revolution by Robert Valentine With their plans causing havoc, wicked quins Clarent and Dellan are at loggerheads. But as the schemes of Sontaran Battle Marshal Skurr reach their climax, the only thing more dangerous than the brothers' competing against each other... is the brothers joining forces. 5. The Thousand Year Thaw by Chris Chapman Once every thousand years, the frozen planet of Zycros thaws, revealing the most fertile soil in the universe. For a brief window, Zycros becomes the farming capital of the cosmos, and that brings with it many visitors - including a small blue box and its two occupants, keen to stretch their legs. But as the ice melts and the temperature rises, the Doctor and Peri realise that this pleasant stroll may be the last one they ever take together... 6. The Firstborn by Jacqueline Rayner The Quins have succeeded in their quest - a little too well. Multiple Doctors congregate on Arunopal, bringing with them a terrible threat to reality... This release comes with a bonus audiobook: The Ultimate Poe by Andrew Collins. **Please note: the Collectors' Edition CDs are strictly limited to a pressing of just 1,500 copies**

Today we will be talking about the viking raid on Lindisfarne, as well as the history leading up to the raid. Lindisfarne was a small island off of the Northeastern coast of England, which at the time was considered to be part of the kingdom of the Northumbrian king, Oswald. The island became home to Lindisfarne Priory which was founded by St. Aiden at the request of King Oswald, which why the island is now also known as the Holy Island. Gerard Madden is a native of Whitegate, County Clare, and is the author of numerous books dealing with local history and the ancestry of Irish families. He authored the histories of Holy Island, Scariff, Mountshannon and Tuamgraney. He is also editor and frequent author of the East Clare Heritage Sliabh Aughty Journal and a boatman of 32 years. This conversation was recorded while I was with my daughter Isabel of five years, after a boat tide to Holy Island recently. Gerard or 'Ger' as he is known around here is a prolific writer and historian as well as a boatman. He is suggesting in this interview that the Child Burial ground, the most sacred spot on Holy Island, be restored without delay and that the planned Interpretative Centre be forgone, as we have the most beautiful island right there in front of us. They rained terror and destruction on Christian lands across Europe as far as Spain and Constantinople, before turning their attention away from raiding towards permanent settlement and the founding of new societies, from Ukraine to Normandy to Greenland. There has never been an explosion of exploration and aggression quite like the Viking expansion of the early Middle Ages -- we discuss the motives behind the expansion, which are rooted in the religious mismatch between Scandinavia and mainland Europe, the technologies that made it possible, the prizes and targets at which they aimed, the victories and setbacks that they encountered, the imprints that they left behind, and the winds of change that ultimately brought an end to the Viking adventure. An East Clare Councillor is hopeful the Holy Island visitor centre could be open before the end of next summer. Newly announced rural regeneration funding will see nearly €7.5m shared between two key projects in Clare, with almost €4 million set aside to develop the tourist centre in Mountshannon and over 3.5m allocated to the Kilrush Maritime Training Centre. Clare County Council will also pledge €1m toward the Mountshannon venture and €700,000 to the West Clare project. Fine Gael Councillor from Whitegate, Pat Burke has been telling Clare FM's Rebecca O'Sullivan that this funding is a major step towards boosting tourism in East Clare.

In this Film Ireland podcast Gemma Creagh talks to Robert Manson, writer and director of Holy Island. Holy Island is a story about two lost souls, Rosa and David, trapped in purgatory in the form of a run-down port town. They meet awaiting a boat to leave the island, both longing to return home. Together they are forced to traverse an abnormal maze, piecing together their past lives through shared conversations and memories. In the end, only one of them can be saved. The other must fall. Holy Island is in cinemas from 14th October 2022.
A Clare Independent TD is criticising the Department of Heritage for a 'bureaucratic response' to Clare's application to have two sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Tentative List. In response to a question from Scariff-based TD Michael McNamara, Minister Darragh O'Brien states that the Burren failed to be included as a 'revised application needs to be drafted to incorparate aspects of the Galway Burren'. In relation to Holy Island, the Housing Minister stated that 'a robust narrative for oustanding universal value was not sufficiently demonstrated'. Deputy McNamara says a failure to communicate has led to lost opportunities for Clare.

Boarding a small passenger ferry at Tenby, you set sail for Caldey Island through a swell that rocks the boat like a toy in the bath. Before long, you reach the holy island. A 1,000-year-old Catholic monastery sits hidden within its wooded heart, but your first instinct is to walk the beach that stretches east from the tiny harbour wall. The sand is soft, warmed by the summer sun, and the breeze gentle. You find a spot to sit, down by the waves.BBC Countryfile Magazine's Sound Escapes are a weekly audio postcard from the countryside to help you relax and transport you somewhere beautiful, wherever you happen to be.Recorded by Daniel Graham. In this episode I will cross the Shannon Estuary to the Holy Island of Scattery or in its Irish name Inis Cathaigh, from the golden beaches of Ballybunion, Beale and Littor the sight of a round tower breaks the Irish skyline with the backdrop of County Clare, this is the holy Island of the Shannon Estuary called Scattery Island. During the periods 1846 and 1847 onwards our ancestors who left our green shores to America,Canada, Australia and England took one last look across the Shannon at this special place before they left, indeed many may not have ever visited the holy island but in their dreams kept their Irish connection with the area. I will take a short look at its early history and relate the story of St Senan and the serpent and the visit of a West Cork Saint called Conaire. This is again is a snap shot, I will be back again in the future with a special unique program on Scattery.

Gwion designs/makes/prints his own pedals under the name Holy Island Audio and his pedals are used by a lot of artists spread about the music scene, plus not to mention some pretty big names that follow the socials. He also plays in Better Than Mending who have just released a new EP. We speak lots about how the love of achieving new sounds while playing guitar led to creating ones from scratch, the design process and lots of music and tech speak too for the guitar nerds. Definitely check out all the cool things Gwion is doing on the Instagram page, you may want to try a pedal for yourself. And Better Than Mending's new EP "Spineless" is a great listen if you're into your Converge/We Never Learned To Live/Palm Reader type bands. It was cool to listen to something new that sounded like the band was smashing it out live in a room together for a change.Much love too for the Angel Teeth Pedal, hearing I was being sent one at the end of the Podcast made my week.
