Good morning, There's much discussion over flags and marches and what it means to be British at the moment. This has meant the legitimate concerns of some have led to my own legitimate concerns for my family's safety. As an immigrant and a visible ethnic minority in the town in which I live, I can feel a sense of dis-ease and fear about whether or not I'm welcome in the nation which I have called home my whole life. It's within this climate of hyper-vigilance that I boarded a local bus and braced myself for some racist words from one particular man – someone I had judged based on the colour of his skin. To me, he looked like the type of person who might not like me. I thought he might shout some abuse, or tell me to go back to where I came from. Instead he showed me kindness. He held my son's buggy for me as I struggled with mine and my kids' belongings, giving up his seat so we could sit down. I could have wept at the simple humanity of it. And the shame of me pre-emptively judging another based on a perceived difference. All around us we see evidence that our society is fractured and fragmented and polarised. The horror of the scenes in Northern Ireland, and the sadness as we remember MP Jo Cox's murder 10 years ago this week. We're told time and again that we have more in common than what divides us. But I wonder whether this suggests we need to find our commonality before feeling a shared humanity. Maybe it's recognising our difference and choosing decency, kindness, and even love despite those differences that we should value. The Christian tradition can help us here in the example of the early Church – people from many different backgrounds and cultural and religious traditions – came together, sharing everything they had, not because they were the same, but because of a commonality found outside their individual circumstances and characteristics. Their differences were the point. This week, I attended the Sandford St Martin awards honouring the best in religious broadcasting, where a special award went to the BBC's Pilgrimage. The show takes well-known figures in British life with different beliefs – the devoutly religious, the agnostic, and the vehemently atheist – on a journey towards sacred sites including Santiago de Compostela, Holy Island and the Vatican. Perhaps the show's beauty lies not in the pilgrims' sameness, but in their difference. The commonality is not in their beliefs, but in their shared purpose, getting through a gruelling journey; spiritual and personal transformation taking place along the way. I find this a beautiful metaphor for this moment in which we find ourselves - One which might help us to meet the challenges ahead of us, where we might see our differences, and choose kindness and togetherness, anyway.

Eleanor Barraclough explores the hidden histories of the Viking Age by focusing on the real lives of Norse individuals through everyday objects rather than modern myths. A primary example is a 1200 AD runic message discovered on a sliver of wood in Bergen, Norway, from a woman named Gytha who writes "Gytha says that you should go home" to her husband while he was drinking in a tavern. While Gytha's message is clear, her husband's attempt at a response on the other side is completely unintelligible, likely due to his inebriated state. These spiky runes were often carved into hard surfaces like wood, stone, or even bone to serve as private, personal communications. Barraclough, who has a background in Old Norse language and literature, derived the title of her book, "Embers of the Hands," from an Old Norse kenning for gold which she repurposed to symbolize precious human stories found in historical ephemera. The Viking Age itself is traditionally marked by the shocking 793 AD raid on the rich monastery at Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, which sent terror-filled shockwaves across Europe. This era is characterized by a vast diaspora reaching from Arctic Scandinavia to the North Atlantic and eastward down Eurasian waterways to the Islamic Caliphate. 1/81600 SCANDANAVIA
We come to the final episode in our Perelandra series. With Ransom having defeated the Unman and being nurtured back to health by this perfected world, he encounters the eldila, Malacandra and Perelandra, who bring him to the King and Queen on the Holy Island. There he learns of the temptation of the King and the recovery of the Queen, of a world saved by the virtue of its founding parents. Confused, still, by the Unman's assault on his imagination during their ride on the fishes, Ransom seeks clarity on the meaning of the small over against the immensities of Maleldil's creation. In answer, Malacandra and Perelandra offer him the vision of the Great Dance, how each individual and each community--because they are rooted in Maleldil himself--are the center and thus, infinitely loved and valued.
In this conversation, Dr. Paul Sloan discusses the relationship between Jesus and the law, challenging common misconceptions about the Pharisees and the nature of ritual purity. He emphasizes that Jesus' teachings and actions should be understood within the context of Israel's restoration and the covenantal framework established in the Old Testament. The discussion highlights the importance of understanding the law not as a means of works righteousness but as a reflection of God's covenantal love and grace. In this conversation, Paul Sloan discusses the relationship between Christ, the law, and the concept of restoration in the context of eschatology. He emphasizes that Christ's ministry is a fulfillment of the law rather than an abolition, and that the restoration of Israel involves a new heart and obedience to the Torah. The conversation also explores the implications for Gentiles regarding the law, particularly in light of Acts 15, where the early church debated the obligations of Gentile believers. Sloan argues that while the law remains significant, its application differs for Jews and Gentiles, and he highlights the importance of understanding Paul's writings in this context.Pre-order my novel, The Long Road to Holy Island: https://amzn.to/4sISAC9Get access to my book club, show notes, ad-free episodes and more: https://patreon.com/gospelsimplicity Make a one-time donation: https://paypal.me/gospelsimplicityBook a meeting: https://calendly.com/gospelsimplicity/meet-with-austinRead my writings: https://austinsuggs.substack.comBuy the book: https://amzn.to/4sRM0cdDr. Sloan's Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jesus-and-jewish-law/id1791111864Follow Dr. Sloan on X: https://x.com/paulthomasloanAbout the Guest: Paul Sloan, Ph.D. (University of St. Andrew's) is Associate Professor of Theology at Houston Christian University. Adispatch from the holy island, via Alabama. Two guys from Muscle Shoals, Alabama -0 the city that quietly wrote half the soul records you've ever loved — making shoegaze concept albums about a tidal island off the coast of Northumberland. On paper, it shouldn't work. In practice, Holy Island, the debut from Adam Morrow and Jamie Sego's Sister Ray Davies, is one of the more beautifully stunning records to land this year: motorik folk, walls of fuzz, delay pedal disco, and genuine literary heft, released via the always excellent Sonic Cathedral and drawing comparisons to mid-period Flying Saucer Attack, Souvlaki-era Slowdive and a long-lost Spacemen 3 outtake. They are, by their own admission, complete beginners as DJs. We handed them the airwaves anyway. What came back is exactly what you'd expect from two people who learned to hear music through Nuggets compilations and Delia Derbyshire records, who want biblical noise and dream of piloting the Grateful Dead's Wall of Sound. It's a mix that's charming and oddly coherent: dub basslines, psych and proto-electronic tangents, the kind of selection that could only have been assembled by people who think in pedals and reverb tails rather than BPMs. A journey with a clear first step, even if the destination remains gloriously unclear. Not a DJ mix in any conventional sense, just an excellently varied record collection let loose.

A landmark visitor attraction officially opens today in East Clare following a €4.3m refurbishment of a historic building. Described as the region's "most ambitious tourism project to date", the Old Rectory in Mountshannon, which has been standing since 1905 has been transformed to house the Inis Cealtra Visitor Experience. The centre offers panoramic views of Lough Derg, a first floor café, with a modern exhibition space showcasing stories about Holy Island and East Clare's heritage. Clare County Council Tourism Director Siobhán McNulty says it's an exciting new venture.

In this episode of the Anglotopia podcast, host Jonathan Thomas interviews photographer and adventurer Quintin Lake about his remarkable journey walking the entire coastline of Great Britain. Over five years, Quintin captured the beauty and diversity of Britain's shores through his photography, documenting the challenges and discoveries he made along the way. The conversation explores his inspiration, preparation, memorable encounters, and the profound impact the journey had on his perspective of Britain and himself. In this conversation, Quintin Lake shares his extraordinary journey of walking around the coast of Britain, discussing the challenges and insights gained along the way. He reflects on the beauty of capturing the perfect light in photography, the rich history of places like Northumberland, and the differences in camping rights between Scotland and England. Quintin also highlights the role of social media in enhancing his travel experience, the importance of both natural and industrial landscapes, and the evolving appreciation of architecture. He shares anecdotes of wildlife encounters, the impact of the pandemic on his journey, and the meticulous process of selecting photographs for his book. Finally, he reveals his future plans to climb and camp on the mountains of England and Wales, emphasizing the joy of exploration and discovery. Producer's Note: You'll want to watch the YouTube/video version of this episode if you can, as Quintin shared a ton of pictures with us that he gave us permission to put into the video (we've also set up a gallery you can browse as well, see links below) Links The Perimeter Book - Amazon Link Quintin Lake's Website Quintin Lake's Walk Blog Gallery of Pictures from the Walk Quintin Lake Instagram Turn right at Land's End: The story of his 7000 mile British coastal walk Notes from a Small Island Kingdom by the Sea UK National Trails Mountains of Britain Land's End to John o'Groats Walk Thames Path Walk Takeaways Quintin Lake walked the entire coastline of Great Britain over five years. His journey was inspired by a meditative walk along the River Thames. Preparation for the walk involved both physical and mental training. The journey was broken into manageable stages, often using historic counties as guides. Quintin faced significant challenges, especially in the rugged terrain of Scotland. He encountered many memorable people along the way, including a farmer in Dumfries and Galloway. The experience changed his perception of Britain and its diverse landscapes. Quintin's photography captures the beauty and drama of Britain's coastline. He emphasizes the importance of being present and contemplative while walking. The journey taught him resilience and self-knowledge through overcoming physical challenges. Capturing the perfect light is essential for photography. Northumberland offers a rich tapestry of history and beauty. The right to roam in Scotland allows for more freedom in camping. Social media can enhance travel experiences by connecting with locals. Industrial landscapes hold as much value as natural ones. Architectural appreciation evolves over time and is not static. Photographing transient landscapes captures moments that may not last. Selecting photographs is a meticulous process that requires careful consideration. Wildlife encounters can lead to unforgettable moments in nature. Future adventures can continue to inspire and lead to new discoveries. Sound Bites "I'd been a travel photographer for about 25 years and I'd always associated inspiration with the exotic... And then about 12 years ago, I got meningitis and was physically very limited... when my strength came back, I decided to do a kind of meditative slow walk down the River Thames... And the pictures were some of the best I'd ever produced." "The Norwegians have this great expression, the doorstep mile, the hardest part of any journey is taking the first step. I'm a great believer, just kind of go." "It was 10 times harder than I imagined it would be in the end. But at the beginning I had the naivety of thinking, you know, I just started from London, walking down the South coast and it seemed quite low stakes." "I truly had a cosmic experience... I walked to Holy Island, those six kilometers in moonlight... I've got these strange pictures of these things in moonlight. And then I camped on the bay there where the Vikings landed on the north of the island in the sea grass." "My first day at Gretna Green into Scotland, I was pulling this 'I'm lost' line when the farmer beckoned me over. But all he wanted to know is if he could advise me the best way across his field, if I needed any food and if I wanted any water." "I've never understood why people don't visit kind of nuclear power stations with the same reverence as cathedrals. To me, I don't see a difference there. They are the kind of modern wonders and they're kind of extraordinary and they're visually extraordinary." "I strongly resist the idea of Britain being entirely a sort of historical palimpsest... the fascinating thing is that you have these layers of history of Norman Tudor, the whole thing, it's all there, wherever you look, but then you also have these modernist things." "There were five otters that just walked past me. I had my hand on the jet boil stove and I just gently turned the sound down and just kept completely silent and they walked past me." "What I hope it achieves is the kind of lived experience of what it's like to do a walk like that. That you can walk through a firing range and see blown up tanks. Then you can walk onto a beach and see a bunch of kids windsurfing. Then you can see some piece of classic picturesque England with thatched cottages and pubs and people with dogs." Is there a place for ancient traditions like pilgrimage in our fast-paced modern world? This episode dives right into that fascinating question! We'll explore how these sacred journeys can still profoundly impact us today despite their roots in a long-gone era. This weekend, I had the chance to witness something truly special as my wife and her interfaith minister friends embarked on the final stretch of St. Cuthbert's Way to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. It was a walk not just through the shifting sands but through time itself, retracing the footsteps of monks from Melrose Abbey. Their journey involved rich rituals around water, passage, and renewal, sparking insightful shifts within participants. Just goes to show, there's always something deeply transformative waiting at the heart of a pilgrimage. But the magic of pilgrimages isn't confined to religious paths alone. Whether it's the renowned Camino de Santiago or a gruelling endurance race, these experiences challenge us, pushing us toward proving our worth to ourselves. The essence lies in undertaking a task, not because it's easy, but because it's demanding. It's about breaking through personal barriers and uncovering new aspects of ourselves. So, what do you think? Could your next big endeavor be a modern-day pilgrimage that helps you discover more about yourself? Let's chat about it some more. If this episode resonated with you, feel free to share it with a friend or drop some stars our way—trust me, they brighten our day! Until next time, thank you for joining me on this journey of exploration and discovery.
What makes the tiny island of Lindisfarne a “thin place” where the spiritual and physical worlds seem to meet? How does living in such a close-knit community shape one's identity? And what secrets lie beyond the tourist paths on this ancient sacred site? LK Wilde and J.F. Penn talk about their love of Lindisfarne.Laura is […] The post Thin Places and Tidal Shores: Lindisfarne, Holy Island, With LK Wilde appeared first on Books And Travel.
Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, is a tidal island in England connected to the mainland by a narrow road. Twice a day, the sea covers the causeway. Signs alert visitors to the dangers of crossing during high tide. Yet, tourists regularly disregard the warnings and often end up sitting atop submerged cars or swimming to raised safety huts where they can be rescued. The tide is predictable, as sure as the rising sun. And warnings are everywhere; you can’t possibly miss them. Yet, as one writer described, Lindisfarne is “where the reckless try to outrace the tide.” Proverbs tells us that it’s foolish to be “reckless and careless” (14:16 esv). A reckless person has little regard for wisdom or wise counsel and doesn’t practice attentiveness or diligent care for others (vv. 7–8). Wisdom, however, slows us down to listen and ponder so that we’re not carried away by rash emotions or half-baked ideas (v. 6). Wisdom teaches us to ask good questions and consider the implications of our actions. While a reckless person charges forward with little regard for relationships or consequences—or often truth—a “prudent [person] gives thought to his steps” (v. 15). While we’ll sometimes need to act decisively or swiftly, we can resist recklessness. As we receive and practice God’s wisdom, He’ll give us the guidance we need when we need it.

The episode was recorded on the breathtaking Holy Island of Lindisfarne, United Kingdom, where the Vikings first invaded the UK, an island you can only drive to in low tide. It was a great experience to visit, but it had a poor internet connection, so unfortunately, the audio quality of this episode is a little inadequate.
Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, lies some 11.5 miles to the south east of Berwick-upon-Tweed, just off the coast of Northumberland. Only accessible at low tide, the island still possesses a mystical air, no doubt from its time as a Christian pilgrimage site. Probably most famous as the production centre of the Lindisfarne Gospels, or the island that gave the folk-rock band Lindisfarne their name, the island was also the centre of the Cult of St Cuthbert in the Middle Ages. But what folklore or legends has the island accrued over the years? Let's find out in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! Today we are joined by author and publisher Mark Nemglan to discuss his new title from Scarlet Imprint, Avalon Working. Avalon Working is equal parts grimoire and devotional, gazeteer and visionary journey. The work passionately argues for Glastonbury as centre of emergence and initiation, a latter-day Eleusis. Through essay and ritual, the author invites readers to actively participate in the Holy Island's unfolding destiny, in partnership with its spirits and powers, to co-create its mythopoeia and, in doing so, forge a new Avalonian covenant. In the Plus show Mark goes into detail regarding the rituals and spirits associated with Glastonbury and the strange encounters people have had on the Tor and Mark shares with us his own incredible experience. Large crowds descended on East Clare today to pay their respects to the late literary great, Edna O'Brien. The Tuamgraney native was remembered as a worsdmith, extraordinary women and fabulous mother at her funeral mass this afternoon. The voice of Edna O'Brien speaking in 2015 where outlined her fearless approach to her 1963 debut novel "Country Girls" which would epitomise her legendary career to come. The book was initially censored in Ireland and denounced by the Church for highlighting taboo social issues. Throughout the course of her over 60-year vocation, O'Brien penned over 30 texts and was described during her funeral mass as someone who gave courage and spoke for those who were rendered dumb. Chief Celebrant Fr Donagh O'Brien said she was a wordsmith and a truth teller who paid the price for her bravery. St.Joseph's Church in Tuamgraney was packed to capcity for the service, with many more paying their respects watching from screens outside. Those in attendance included President Michael D.Higgins and First Lady Sabina, while Commandant Colonel Claire Mortimer represented the office of Taoiseach and Tánaiste. Irish Actor Stephen Rea was among those who delivered a reading during the ceremony, A number of gifts were also brought to the altar to celebrate Edna's life, they included copy of Ulyesses by James Joyce, a portrait of Samuel Beckett and flowers from her childhood home at Drewsboro House, which she was said to have described as "her home of homes". The French Legion of Honour was also brought up to recognise a lifetime of extraordinary achievement, as well as the budda to recognise her spiritual exploration. The eulogy was read out by Novelist Andew O'Hagan who paid tribute to Edna for wonderfully sharing her world with others. In Accordance with her wishes, Edna O'Brien was laid to rest at the ancient monastic settlement of Holy Island on Lough Derg. Speaking during the mass, her son Marcos Gelber said that although she will rightly be remembered for her literary works, she was a fabulous mother who showered her family with love.

A Clare election candidate believes he's not at a disadvantage despite living in another county and admitting he's not up to speed with local issues. Stonemason, Michael Loughrey from Gort is running for the newly formed "Irish People" party in the Ennistymon electoral area. In August, some current members of the party, including Loughrey caused controversy during a protest against a library book in East Clare when they erected a banner on the 12th century monastic tower at Holy Island, which is a protected structure. Loughrey insists he has what it takes to tackle problems in North Clare though.
review To celebrate forty years of wandering through time and space in style, the Sixth Doctor and some of his best friends are about to find themselves in the adventure of his lives... 1. The Exaltation by Jacqueline Rayner Hints of a temporal anomaly bring the Doctor and Mel to Arunopal on the day King Otho steps down as ruler. But Otho has a dilemma - which of his five sons should succeed to the throne? He has a deadly game in mind to solve the problem - and the target is a certain Time Lord... 2. Escape from Holy Island by Chris Chapman The history books tell us that on the 8th of June, 793 AD, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne was burnt to the ground by Viking raiders. But history also records that "fiery dragons were seen flying in the sky" - can that be true? With time running out, the Doctor, Peri and a young HG Wells mobilise the island's monks as the real raiders of Lindisfarne thunder over the North Sea - and they don't look like Vikings... 3. Sibling Rivalry by Robert Valentine The Doctor, Constance and Flip are stuck on an alien planet in the middle of a civil war. To make matters worse, the Sontarans have invaded. To make matters worse still, two of the dastardly quins - the volatile Clarent and the odious Dellan - are both on the scene... and the Doctor may not survive their furious competition. 4. Children of the Revolution by Robert Valentine With their plans causing havoc, wicked quins Clarent and Dellan are at loggerheads. But as the schemes of Sontaran Battle Marshal Skurr reach their climax, the only thing more dangerous than the brothers' competing against each other... is the brothers joining forces. 5. The Thousand Year Thaw by Chris Chapman Once every thousand years, the frozen planet of Zycros thaws, revealing the most fertile soil in the universe. For a brief window, Zycros becomes the farming capital of the cosmos, and that brings with it many visitors - including a small blue box and its two occupants, keen to stretch their legs. But as the ice melts and the temperature rises, the Doctor and Peri realise that this pleasant stroll may be the last one they ever take together... 6. The Firstborn by Jacqueline Rayner The Quins have succeeded in their quest - a little too well. Multiple Doctors congregate on Arunopal, bringing with them a terrible threat to reality... This release comes with a bonus audiobook: The Ultimate Poe by Andrew Collins. **Please note: the Collectors' Edition CDs are strictly limited to a pressing of just 1,500 copies**
Today we will be talking about the viking raid on Lindisfarne, as well as the history leading up to the raid. Lindisfarne was a small island off of the Northeastern coast of England, which at the time was considered to be part of the kingdom of the Northumbrian king, Oswald. The island became home to Lindisfarne Priory which was founded by St. Aiden at the request of King Oswald, which why the island is now also known as the Holy Island. "I think for myself, it's realizing that there is a journey has given me more patience sometimes with myself that it's okay, I haven't arrived. I can still be somebody who's learning and making mistakes." - Kyle WisdomOn this episode of Restoring the Soul, we have a special guest, Kyle Wisdom, who shares his transformative experience on a pilgrimage to St. Cuthbert's Way. Kyle takes us on a journey of anticipation, disappointment, and profound reflections.
