Introduction: The Problem We Can't Ignore We live in a world where the food we eat is supposed to nourish us, but what if it's actually making us sick? Pesticides, soil degradation, and nutrient-depleted crops are all part of our modern food system, contributing to rising cases of neurological disorders, metabolic diseases, and immune dysfunction. The research is clear: exposure to certain pesticides has been linked to cognitive decline, Parkinson's disease, and an increased cancer risk. At the same time, the way we farm today is stripping our food of the vital nutrients our ancestors took for granted. So, the question isn't just about avoiding chemicals—it's about finding food that truly fuels life. The solution? Organic, regenerative, and locally grown produce. Let's break down the science and give you real reasons why it's never been more important to care about where your food comes from. The Science Behind Pesticides and Health Risks The Hidden Dangers of Conventional Farming Pesticide residues in conventional food contribute to long-term health risks, including cognitive decline and neurodevelopmental disorders in children. According to Holzman (2012) in Organic Food Conclusions Don't Tell the Whole Story, "Pesticide dietary risk is a function of many factors, including the number of residues, their levels, and pesticide toxicity." (Holzman, 2012). Organophosphate pesticides, commonly used in industrial agriculture, have been directly linked to Parkinson's disease. As Mie et al. (2017) state in Human Health Implications of Organic Food and Organic Agriculture, "Epidemiological studies have reported adverse effects of certain pesticides on children's cognitive development at current levels of exposure." (Mie et al., 2017). Pregnant women consuming conventional produce showed higher levels of pyrethroid insecticides in their bodies compared to those eating organic. Curl et al. (2019) in Effect of a 24-week Randomized Trial of an Organic Produce Intervention found that "3-Phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA, a biomarker for pyrethroids) concentrations were significantly higher in conventional produce consumers compared to organic consumers." (Curl et al., 2019). The Cancer Connection The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified several pesticides used in conventional farming—such as glyphosate and malathion—as likely carcinogens. Hemler et al. (2018) in Organic Foods for Cancer Prevention—Worth the Investment? found that "Participants with the highest frequency of organic food consumption had a 25% lower risk of being diagnosed with cancer during follow-up compared with those with the lowest frequency." (Hemler et al., 2018). The Nutrient Density Solution: More Than Just Pesticide-Free Higher Nutrients in Organic & Regenerative Foods Organic fruits and vegetables contain higher levels of vitamin C, essential minerals like magnesium and iron, and more powerful antioxidants. Maloney (2014) in Comparative Study on Nutritional Quality and Detection of Pesticide Residues states, "Organic foods are better in taste, appearance, firmness, and nutrient content when compared to conventional foods." (Maloney, 2014). Organically grown produce has 20-40% higher levels of antioxidants than conventionally grown produce, which help protect against inflammation and chronic diseases. According to Mie et al. (2017), "Differences in the composition between organic and conventional crops include a modestly higher content of phenolic compounds in organic fruit and vegetables." (Mie et al., 2017). The Simple Steps to Better Food Go Organic Whenever Possible – Reduce your pesticide exposure and increase the nutrient density of your food. Support Local & Regenerative Farms – Look for farmers using soil-restoring practices that make food healthier. Grow Your Own – Even a small backyard garden or balcony pot can produce pesticide-free, nutrient-rich food. Buy Seasonal Produce – Seasonal food is fresher, richer in nutrients, and often grown closer to home. Prioritize the Dirty Dozen – If you can't go 100% organic, at least choose organic versions of the most pesticide-laden produce, like strawberries, spinach, and apples. Conclusion: Take Back Control of Your Health Our food choices today impact our health for decades to come. Science shows that organic, regenerative, and locally grown food isn't just a trendy choice—it's a necessity. From reducing pesticides to boosting essential nutrients, switching to better food sources is one of the most powerful steps you can take to live a longer, healthier life. So, are you ready to make the change? Bibliography: Holzman, D. (2012). Organic Food Conclusions Don't Tell the Whole Story. Environmental Health Perspectives. Curl, C., et al. (2019). One day, several decades ago, the writer Winnie Holzman was shopping in a Manhattan bookstore where a particular cover caught her eye. It showed a woman with a green face, a black hat pulled down over her eyes. The book was “Wicked” by Gregory Maguire, a retelling of L. Frank Baum's “Oz” stories from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West. “When I turned it over and read the little précis on the back, it blew my mind,” Holzman said. “I thought it was such a brilliant premise.” The book ended up on Holzman's bookshelf, with its enigmatic cover facing out.Years later, the composer Stephen Schwartz contacted Holzman to ask if she'd be interested in adapting Maguire's book for the stage. The musical they wrote together opened in 2003, and it is now one of the most successful shows in Broadway history. The producers started talking about a movie adaptation, but Holzman was cautious: “We had to really kind of clear our minds and kind of reconceive the whole story.”The film version of “Wicked” opened in 2024, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, and with a screenplay by Holzman and Dana Fox. It is one of the highest-grossing movies of the year and is nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.Winnie Holzman joins Gilbert Cruz, the editor of the Book Review, to discuss the benefits and drawbacks of adapting your own adaptation. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Annelle Sheline, research fellow in the Middle East program at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, to discuss the reporting around a recently brokered ceasefire deal in Israel & Gaza. Then, she speaks with Jael Holzman, senior reporter at HeatMap News, to discuss her recent piece entitled "The Growing Push to Ban Renewable Energy in Oklahoma." First, Emma runs through updates on Netanyahu's torpedoing of the alleged ceasefire, including an escalation killing dozens more in Gaza, ProPublica's report on Biden's suppression of dissent over Gaza, Trump's CEO cabal, the US' TikTok Ban, Trump's AG nom, the FTC's report on UnitedHealthcare's overcharging of cancer patients by nearly 1000%, and compensation for women's college basketball players, before expanding briefly on the odd power plays between Trump and Biden over the developing TikTok Ban. Dr. Annelle Sheline then joins, diving right into this week's development of a predictably brief ceasefire in Gaza, including Netanyahu's immediate refusal to abide by its requirement and the following escalation resulting in some 70 dead, unpacking why Bibi has once again sabotaged a deal, why Trump still wants peace for his inauguration, and why Netanyahu's sights for the second Trump Administration are set on the West Bank. Next, Dr. Sheline and Emma shift to unpacking the future of the normalization attempt between Israel and Saudi Arabia – a process that the Biden Administration happily picked up off of Trump 1.0 – and the genuine danger of Trump extending the guarantee of uncritical military support that we provide Israel to Saudi Arabia as well, before wrapping up with a conversation on the particular role the Biden Administration's support for Israel's genocide in Gaza had on undermining support for Kamala Harris' candidacy. Jael Holzman then looks to Oklahoma as she walks Emma through the developing push to ban renewable energy projects locally, exploring how the expansion of the industry alongside a growing reactionary movement helped bolster this drive, despite its obvious potential negative impacts. Expanding on this, Holzman and Emma briefly explore the evolution of this “Green MAGA” movement as exemplified by RFK Jr., and the increasing problem of a green energy incentive structure based on tax credits, before wrapping up by tackling the extractive and material incentives for Trump's fantasy land grab of Greenland. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they dive deep into the exposé of Elon Musk's gamer fraud, talk with Jersey Boy from Milwaukee about engaging in disagreement, and watch Sam Husseini's righteous and confrontational action at Blinken's final press conference. Jay from Oregon unpacks some finer details of the nurses' strike, Pete Hegseth shies away from promising not to be a hypocrite, and Jeff from CA shares his insight into Hegseth's problematic history when it comes to a Defense Secretary nomination, plus, your calls and IMs! Eco Atlantic Oil & Gas Ltd chief executive Gil Holzman talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's strategic moves and plans for 2025. Holzman explained a key development—the completion of a $12 million equivalent share buyback through a swap with Africa Oil, reducing the share count by 16%. He emphasised that this enhances shareholder value by increasing each shareholder's stake in the company's assets. Holzman highlighted Eco Atlantic's portfolio of eight exploration licenses across Namibia, South Africa, and Guyana. He noted that the licenses include some of the hottest oil and gas exploration areas globally. Significant plans for 2025 include potential farm-out deals, drilling activities, and advancing partnerships with industry leaders such as TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy. Additionally, Holzman announced the appointment of Emily Ferguson, a seasoned professional with 22 years of experience, to Eco Atlantic's board of directors. Ferguson's extensive background in exploration and geoscience, including her work with TotalEnergies, is expected to be a valuable asset to the company. Eco Atlantic is gearing up for an active year, with plans in motion across its global licenses. Holzman thanked Africa Oil for its collaboration and emphasised the impact of the reduced share count on the company's future activities and shareholder returns. Fairness has played a pivotal role throughout history, with the pursuit of equality and justice helping to shape the world that we live in today. Fairness also plays out in our everyday lives and in the lives of children as they grapple with real-life moments that feel “unfair.” "Fairness" in the context of social and emotional development refers to a child's growing ability to treat others equitably and considering the needs and perspectives of others. The idea of “fairness” pops up in things like taking turns, sharing, and making decisions. In this episode, three 6-8 year old children, Bodhi, Aubrey, and Will, visit with LKBH host Todd Loyd to talk about fairness. They then travel to the Land of Qook-a-lackas to help two Qook-a-lacka friends — Principal Quella and Korrik, the President of the Qook-a-berry Preservation Society — to restore fairness to the Land through a process of “qook-a-lation.” The kids listen to both sides of a conflict, ask questions, and then suggest fair solutions. Our guest stars on this episode are Vella Lovell, who plays the role of Principal Quella and Meredith Holzman, who plays the role of the President of the Qook-a-berry Preservation Society, Korrik. Sound design and mixing is by Ryan Marth, and the ukulele music you hear is by actor and composer Bill English. Please learn more about the episode online at playsparkler.org.

Richard Rushfield sits down with Winnie Holzman, creator of the beloved but short-lived teen drama My So-Called Life, which ran for one 19-episode season from 1994-95 and later became a cross-generational cult hit. The show that launched Claire Danes and Jared Leto also captured adolescent angst onscreen in a totally new way — “School is a battlefield for your heart,” anyone? — that made ABC execs “deeply nervous,” says Holzman, though she was fiercely protected by her EPs and mentors, Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick. A student of poetry and the Stanislavski system, Holzman, in a candid, hilarious and nostalgic conversation, unpacks the emotion and humor that propelled her through multiple 1990s TV successes to the Broadway hit Wicked (she wrote the book of the musical) and its two-part film adaptation, whose first installment is in the Oscar hunt. We catch up briefly on news around the arrest of the alleged UHC CEO assassin. Then, journalist and musician Jael Holzman returns to the show to discuss a new piece she has for Rolling Stone on the potential threats to trans people in the coming Trump administration. We look at the rather grim potential of massively undermining of trans medical care, the equally grim state of Democratic opposition, and the general fecklessness with which Democrats have handled what Joe Biden once called the “civil rights issue of our time” in both policy and rhetoric. Wicked (titled onscreen as Wicked: Part I) is a 2024 American musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, with songs by Stephen Schwartz. It is the first of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name by Schwartz and Holzman, which was loosely based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, which in turn is based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, its sequels and its 1939 film adaptation. The film covers the musical's first act. It stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp and Ariana Grande-Butera[b] as Galinda Upland. Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum are featured in supporting roles. Set in the Land of Oz, mostly before Dorothy Gale's arrival from Kansas, it follows Elphaba as she embarks on her path to becoming the Wicked Witch of the West, and chronicles her friendship with her classmate Galinda, who becomes Glinda the Good. Universal Pictures and Marc Platt, who both produced the stage musical, announced the film adaptation in 2012. After a long development and multiple delays, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Chu was hired to direct, with Erivo and Grande cast in 2021. The film was split into two to avoid cutting plot points and expand the characters' journeys and relationships. Principal photography began in England in December 2022, was interrupted in July 2023 by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, and was resumed and completed in January 2024. Wicked premiered at the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia, on November 3, 2024, and was theatrically released in the United States on November 22. It received positive reviews and has grossed $360.3 million worldwide on a $150 million budget. Wicked Part Two is scheduled for release on November 21, 2025.

Remember, if you are part of the problem, you can be a part of the solution. People fall into bad habits and end up regularly sabotaging themselves and their projects. Chris explains how to recognise and deal with this. Fear is usually what is behind bad outcomes. Analysing the language you use will tell you why you are struggling to progress. Most people hold back too much. Learn to share important information that others may not particularly want to hear in a palatable way that does not isolate others. Chris explains how in the episode. Companies want people to speak up, be honest and stop working in silos or tribes. BEST MOMENTS ‘How you lead in any kind of scenario in life is going to be heavily influenced by psychology.' ‘People are wired to avoid discomfort or exert control or a passive-aggressive combination of the two.' ‘Candour is an essential feature of leadership.' Will talks to musician and climate journalist Jael Holzman (Ekko Astral, Heatmap News) about her experience as a congressional reporter at outlets like Axios and Politico, and the conditions that led her to quit. We discuss the institutionalized bias against accurate reporting on topics like climate change and trans rights & healthcare, the outrageous complacency with baseless stories from the likes of LibsofTikTok, and other incidents of casual “lavender scare” that permeate the D.C. press corp. To jsou hlavní témata aktuálního vydání Money Maker Reportu.
