A few months ago, mega-star and Czar of the Americana Empire Jason Isbell announced on social media that he was sorry to push back a few dates at large venues across the country to attend his daughter's school play. In this episode, we discuss whether modern families — especially fathers navigating shifting expectations across their various responsibilities — achieve balance or if we should even try to achieve it.In honor of this topic, we discuss work-life balance, the low bar dads have to live up to as parents and some Donnie and Dave's favorite Isbell songs.Donnie also tries to convince Dave it's time to get a cowboy hat. Show Notes02:26: Work-Life Balance: Before discussing Isbell's decision, the guys talk about the term “work-life balance” and whether it has a place in modern family life. They touch on how this may apply to primary, stay-at-home parents and those who work completely remotely. Dave also sneaks in that he is a rocket scientist. 08:47: What does balance look like now? Dave and Donnie touch on what kind of balance is prevalent today in a post-pandemic work, school and family environment. 11:58: Initial reactions to the Isbell news: Dave admits he was very uncomfortable about the news from Isbell -- well more about the news about the news of Isbell's announcement. 17:36: Responsibilities of a Public Figure and the Low Bar for Dads: The guys touch on the similarities to the Eric Church Final Four show cancellations and how the “family first” argument is sort of a copout which leaves the bar incredibly low for dads. This gives Dave a little bit of the ick. 31:02: There's No Easy Right or Wrong Answer for Dads: Is Isbell's situation so much different than the guys that they can't understand his decision? Or is it that there is no easy, straightforward answer when dealing with these issues? It's getting Meta on this podcast. 33:12: The Dad Life Sound Check: In honor of talking all about him for more than a half an hour, the guys talk about their favorite Isbell songs for the Dad Life Sound Check.40:41: Change My Mind-- Dave Can't Pull Off a Cowboy Hat: Dave asks Donnie to change his mind about why he, too, can wear a cowboy hat. If you look on TV or in the movies you see that dads are not often presented in the best light. They are often idiots or jerks. They do this because of the reality that dad issues drive many problems in people's lives. This is why being a good dad is so important. Many men think being a great dad is something that “other” guys do but it is too hard for them. The truth is very different! Every man can be a great dad, but it will take work. Being a great dad doesn't happen by accident.Today's show focuses on the number one decision men can make that helps them be a great dad.Take ResponsibilityBefore you can be responsible for others, You need to recognize that you are responsible for yourself.Your growth isn't something you can push off on othersYou can't blame a schedule or jobIt's a matter of priorities. The Core 4Growing in the 4 fundamentals: Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual is importantYou can't be lopsided in your lifestyleYour commitment to your growth is a commitment to your loved onesLack of emotional growth = less connection with wife and kids as they get olderFailure Isn't FinalEven if you've blown it, you're still here to overcomeGrowth is a matter of direction, not arrival.Intentions vs IntentionalityTalking doesn't help, start doing one thingCHALLENGE:Being a Great Dad takes you committing to be a great manQuit waiting for perfection and get movingRESOURCES TO HELP YOU THRIVE AS A MAN========================Thriving Man Coaching Resources4D MODEL FREE PDFLearn about the 4 fundamentals of a Successful LifeDiscover OUR SPEAKING AND HOW WE HAVE EMPOWERED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ACROSS THE WORLD

AT OUR AGE is a special podcast that I create to feature everyday people doing extraordinary projects, having a full lifestyle even in their seventies, eighties and beyond. People who are sixty-five and older are my focus on this special podcast. I highlight people who are active and adventurous: John is the first being interviewed. He plays bacci, tennis, he is our master "composter" at our Gulfport Community Volunteer garden. He does this and more with eleven grandchildren. Nice one minute interview and you'll never guess his age because he exudes youthful humor and energy. The second interview is with George, our garden resurrectionist.. he rescued our Gulfport community garden that had been neglected. He has been the "planting orchestrator" for over nine years. Even more interesting is that he travels to the Western U.S. from May through mid October in his renovated "camper van" that has everything for comfort. He is a fun west coast swing dancer ( I knew him in NY and we had lots of fun dances together), he and his wife still venture to partner dances. He has begun playing pickleball. Amazing, Active and Adventure guys! Can you ride a unicycle? For how long? Sure, some guys can but most of us need a little extra support to keep from crashing. The same goes for parenting. You can try to ride it out solo, hoping for the best, but having supportive people in your life to lift you up when things get shaky is a great idea as a dad. Ted Lowe, Bobby Lewis, and Reggie Lewis talk about how to be a great dad and why all fathers shouldn't try to handle the task of raising kids on their own. Society tells men to be strong and self-sufficient, the hero who solves every family problem. But asking for help isn't a sign of weakness. It's a sign that you care enough about your kids to do whatever is best for them and leads to their flourishing. It takes courage to build a support team to help you weather meltdowns and share the journey. Why is important to ask other people to help you be a great dad? Consider this:1. You may be missing something. 2. You may be giving your kid bad advice.3. You sometimes need to bring a pro. 4. You feel less pressure as a dad. The research is clear. We need other people in our lives to help us be the dads we want to be. Who do we choose to help us? Is it a coach? Pastor? Neighbor? Who can you trust to speak into your child's life to create a strong support system for them and for you? Answer this question and the weight of parenting will become a little lighter. Ben is a friend I first met at the epic PDX meetup last year. He had told me a little about his past as an evangelical who wanted to be a pastor or some kind of biblical scholar, but I had no idea how far he had come from his early adulthood. It's really an honor to bring you this story that goes all the usual places with problematic evangelical culture and dodgy theology and ends up with Ben just trying to heal and be the best father and partner he can be. I was moved by Ben's willingness to be his authentic self and talk about his life. Toxic masculinity is just as destructive as we think it is—to society and men alike. But author and professor Nancy Pearcey's data shows more of the whole story: of the power of a great dad and a good man to change their corner of the world. As a little girl, I looked up to my dad so much. I was the youngest of four, but I can remember being scared of the dark, and I ran into my parents' bedroom. I would snuggle in between my mom and dad, and I remember my dad would put his arm around me and I would feel so protected, and then my little head would move into his rib, and I could feel and hear his heartbeat. I felt so cared for and protected. I loved my mom. I had a great relationship with my mom, but there was something about my dad that made me feel safe. I always wanted his attention. I wanted to be seen by him because he was so important to me. -- Ann Wilson Show Notes and Resources Connect with Nancy Pearcey on her website: nancypearcey.com and get a copy of Nancy's book, The Toxic War on Masculinity Go to familylife.com/comingsoon to sign up for the Art of Marriage live event and to be notified of when pre-orders are live!
