A few months ago, mega-star and Czar of the Americana Empire Jason Isbell announced on social media that he was sorry to push back a few dates at large venues across the country to attend his daughter's school play. In this episode, we discuss whether modern families — especially fathers navigating shifting expectations across their various responsibilities — achieve balance or if we should even try to achieve it.In honor of this topic, we discuss work-life balance, the low bar dads have to live up to as parents and some Donnie and Dave's favorite Isbell songs.Donnie also tries to convince Dave it's time to get a cowboy hat. Show Notes02:26: Work-Life Balance: Before discussing Isbell's decision, the guys talk about the term “work-life balance” and whether it has a place in modern family life. They touch on how this may apply to primary, stay-at-home parents and those who work completely remotely. Dave also sneaks in that he is a rocket scientist. 08:47: What does balance look like now? Dave and Donnie touch on what kind of balance is prevalent today in a post-pandemic work, school and family environment. 11:58: Initial reactions to the Isbell news: Dave admits he was very uncomfortable about the news from Isbell -- well more about the news about the news of Isbell's announcement. 17:36: Responsibilities of a Public Figure and the Low Bar for Dads: The guys touch on the similarities to the Eric Church Final Four show cancellations and how the “family first” argument is sort of a copout which leaves the bar incredibly low for dads. This gives Dave a little bit of the ick. 31:02: There's No Easy Right or Wrong Answer for Dads: Is Isbell's situation so much different than the guys that they can't understand his decision? Or is it that there is no easy, straightforward answer when dealing with these issues? It's getting Meta on this podcast. 33:12: The Dad Life Sound Check: In honor of talking all about him for more than a half an hour, the guys talk about their favorite Isbell songs for the Dad Life Sound Check.40:41: Change My Mind-- Dave Can't Pull Off a Cowboy Hat: Dave asks Donnie to change his mind about why he, too, can wear a cowboy hat. The RACI matrix (as well its cousins DACI, DARCI, etc.) aims to neatly categorize stakeholders into roles—who's responsible, accountable, consulted, and informed for every decision your team makes. We spend a lot of time filling out those RACI boxes, because it's supposed to give us order and predictability—a single source of truth for all future choices. We're all about achieving real clarity, but we often see RACIs treated as a one-and-done exercise, rather than something that evolves with a team. People end up in the “R” or “A” space without having the actual authority to execute a role, and then we make those roles the fall guy for a system never set up for them to succeed. In this episode of At Work With The Ready, Rodney Evans and Sam Spurlin explore the good intentions that lead us to make RACIs in the first place, where they fall flat, and why decision making is always more complicated than what can be captured on a chart. They discuss the flaws in the left versus right paradigm and how it hinders productive political discourse. Lewis argues that these labels do not represent consistent philosophies but rather a broken paradigm based on social conformity. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Wrong answer bias, published by lukehmiles on February 2, 2024 on LessWrong. The correct answer leaves nothing to be said. The wrong answer starts a conversation, a research program, an investigation, a journey, an institute, a paper, a book, a youtube channel, a lifestyle, a tribe. Why is reading a textbook so boring? Very few people do it. It just has right answers and few great questions to ponder. Blogs arguing about nutrition are great reading though. If you write a research paper saying "all that shit is dumb just do the obvious thing" then you'll probably have trouble getting it published. I tried once but my professor shut it down saying it's a bad strat basically. "Clean energy" is great as a conversation piece or phrase in your mission statement but "just deregulate nuclear lmao why are you wasting your time" is definitely not in my experience. It's fine if bad ideas are all we ever talk about but the trouble comes when it's time for someone to sit down and do their work. The doctor trying to cure a thing mostly heard about the RCTs on all the shitty methods that barely do anything, so they pick their favorite of those. The AI safety implementer mostly heard discussions about bad methods and probably tries to patch one of those. (And fixing the mistake in a bad method is a not a good way to make a good method.) The parents in the parent group of course mostly talk about their failed attempts to fix the problems they do have, and mostly forget about the problems they never had or quickly fixed. Have hope, you can combat wrong answer bias with these simple tricks. Do not write or speak Do not read or listen Hate the process of fixing things Savor the experience of shit working like it should Act like you have no time or money and won't ever have any (helps if you don't and won't) Assume your answer is too complicated Assume your question is too loaded Assume any task is actually really easy you're doing it wrong Hate struggle Hate nuance If you look impressive then you're doing it wrong Love true success If it looks like you barely did anything at all then you're doing it right Observe people & orgs who get shit done or don't have a problem you have Turn your back on anyone struggling with anything for any reason. They're probably looking for a frend or comunity instead of just focusing on nailing shit all the time like you. Thanks for listening. Episode 31: Right Question, Wrong Answer (Mark 11:27-12:12)Welcome back, friends,  I'm your host, Jeremy McCandless and I'm thrilled to continue on this biblical journey through the Gospel of Mark with you. In today's episode, we're diving into Mark 11:27-12:12, where we'll explore the art of asking questions and the consequences of our choices. So, grab your Bible, find a comfortable spot, and let's dive into the Word together.Episode NotesAsking the Right QuestionsThe Setting (Mark 11:27)Our episode begins with Jesus back in Jerusalem, specifically in the temple courts. This comes after He had dramatically cleared out the temple the previous day, a significant event that set the stage for the confrontation with the religious leaders. The Question of Authority (Mark 11:28)The religious leaders, including the Chief Priests, the Scribes, and the Elders, confront Jesus with a question about His authority. They seek to trap Him with this question, as they have already decided to oppose Him. Jesus, in a masterful response, answers their question with a question about John the Baptist's authority. He challenges them to consider what they believe about John and, by extension, Himself.Their Internal Debate (Mark 11:31-32)The religious leaders find themselves in a dilemma. If they acknowledge John's authority, they will be questioned about why they didn't believe him. If they deny it, they risk alienating the people who hold John in high regard. In the end, they respond with, "We don't know," avoiding the trap they set for Jesus.Jesus' Silence (Mark 11:34)In response to their evasion, Jesus refuses to disclose the source of His authority because He knows their hearts are hardened against Him.The Parable of the Vineyard (Mark 12:1-9)Jesus tells a parable about a vineyard owner who entrusted his vineyard to tenants. He sent servants to collect the fruit, but the tenants mistreated and killed them. The Owner's SonFinally, the owner sends his beloved son, hoping the tenants will respect him. However, they plot to kill the son, thinking they can inherit the vineyard. The Owner's JudgmentIn response to this wickedness, the owner will come and punish the tenants, giving the vineyard to others.Jesus as the Cornerstone (Mark 12:10-11)Jesus quotes Psalm 118:22-23, referring to Himself as the stone the builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone. In reviewing changes to the top of both the Draft Top 250 and the pro Top 100 on this week's MLB Pipeline Podcast, Jim Callis, Jonathan Mayo and Jason Ratliff agree that "there's no wrong answer" when debating whether Paul Skenes or Dylan Crews belongs atop the Draft list and when discussing Jackson Holliday or Elly De La Cruz at No. 1 of the Top 100. The crew also breaks down the end of the College World Series and the Draft Combine before Jim talks to Kent State lefty Joe Whitman about his Combine experience. The trio also somehow finds time to talk about the Futures Game rosters before answering a question from the mailbag. I covered some of this in last week's column in the Jewish Standard, but I have limited space for my columns and there's so much more to talk about, so even if you read the column, listening to this episode.  The word “defund” has only one meaning, regardless of what dictionary we use. To defund something is to take away the money from that something. The slogan “Defund the police” is just another way of saying “let's get rid of the police altogether.” That slogan, though, is what stands in the way of dealing effectively with police violence.  We should be advocating, instead, for the right ways to meet the problems that are so readily evident in such cases as the deaths of George Floyd and Tyre Nichols.Support the show

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary has officially declared a new “Word of the Year” for 2022, but the word itself has actually plagued human relationships since the dawn of time! (:30) The Santa Tipline has returned!  Call 833-431-0905 and leave Santa a voicemail about who has been naughty and who has been nice.  Anna and Raven will play the funniest messages on the air! (2:55) It's nice to pay it forward during the holiday season, so if you find yourself in a drive-thru line and refuse to participate, that's all I need to know about you! (5:41) Are you up to date on this week's biggest news stories? Anna and Raven will get you up to date on what's trending, including the political ramifications of the latest US soccer match! (9:39) The Holiday season is a time of joy but also a time of scams!  Anna and Raven spoke to Eden Iscil from the National Consumers League to learn some tips on how to avoid getting scammed this holiday season! (13:18) Everyone always says that money can't buy happiness…until now!  Anna read a study that money can in fact buy happiness, as long as you're spending it the right way… (17:15) Anna read a statistic that 26% of couples will get engaged during the holidays!  But instead of bringing her joy, the stat brought up some unpleasant Christmas memories… (20:42) Ever had something crazy happen with your Christmas tree?  Producer Sean is spending his first Christmas with his girlfriend and her son, and he wasn't prepared for how elaborate some of their holiday traditions are! (27:43) Last year it was Natalie and Steve's turn to host Christmas day at their home. That morning, Natalie's sisters (and their families) along with her parents all canceled due to Covid concerns. Natalie was outraged, why wait to the last minute to cancel? No one actually had Covid, they were just worried about getting it. Everything had already been prepped. This year, it's her sister's turn to host and she wants to deny the invitation out of spite. Steve says it's not fair to their kids not to see their grandparents and cousins because of her pettiness. Their relationship with her family has not been the same since this happened last year. What would you do? (34:59) Josh has a shot to win $200!  Can he beat Raven in pop culture trivia and claim the prize? (44:16)

Nicholson Baker is the author of 18 books of fiction and nonfiction. He has written for The New Yorker, Harper's, and many other publications. His latest book is Baseless: My Search for Secrets in the Ruins of the Freedom of Information Act. "In the end, I don't care how famous you get, how widely read you are during your lifetime. You're going to be forgotten. And you're going to have five or six fans in the end. It's going to be your grandchildren or your great-grandchildren are going to say, Oh, yeah, he was big. … So I think the key is, write what you actually care about. Because in the end, you're only doing this for yourself. … So maybe do your best stuff for yourself and for the three, four, five people who know in the coming century that you ever existed. That's all you need to do."
