A California murder case is raising explosive new questions about pretrial release, public safety, sanctuary policies, and accountability in the criminal justice system.Marcos Eduardo Iriarte-Valdez was already facing residential burglary charges when police say he was taken back into custody on August 4 for allegedly violating the conditions of his home detention. On August 5, a judge ordered him released on his own recognizance and returned him to electronic monitoring. The next day, prosecutors allege that Iriarte-Valdez stabbed 68-year-old retiree Todd Stewart to death while committing a residential burglary in Martinez, California. Even more astonishing: the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office says prosecutors had objected to electronic home detention for Iriarte-Valdez three separate times. He has since pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and was ordered held without bail after another judge called him a risk to public safety. DHS has also entered the controversy, describing Iriarte-Valdez as a Venezuelan national with Spanish citizenship who had originally been legally admitted to the United States in 2007 and placing an immigration detainer on him after the homicide. The political dispute over California's immigration and sanctuary policies is now intensifying. In this episode, Professor Nez breaks down the timeline, the release decision, the warnings from prosecutors, the immigration controversy, and the questions Americans should be asking about accountability when defendants accused of serious crimes are repeatedly returned to the streets. What do YOU think? Should judges face greater accountability for release decisions involving repeat offenders? What role do intelligence services play under a president that does not heed their advice? That's one of the questions Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter Tim Weiner posits in his most recent book, The Mission, which details how the modern Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has evolved during the era of the global war on terror. Weiner describes the evolution of the missions undertaken by the CIA, which were historically driven by presidential desires to change the world through covert action, and contrasts them with the post-Cold War agency that grapples with trust and reputation in the information era. Weiner also discusses how the delicate interplay between betrayal and trust underwrites intelligence work, the common aim of pursuing secrets that intelligence and journalism share, and why he believes the cumulative effects of partisan purges within intelligence services under President Donald Trump leaves the United States in a dire state of danger. Sir Richard Dearlove and guest co-host Rosanna Lockwood dive into the news stories in geopolitics shaping the world this week: how a secret CIA task force in Cuba may be laying the groundwork for a more American-friendly government, why the construction of a new giant embassy for China is igniting political NIMBY-ism in London, and what US intelligence says about how stray Russian missiles and drones may be Putin's way of testing NATO's resolve. Is the Russian military actually losing ground, or adapting faster than Western allies realize? Fresh off a tour of the Ukrainian front lines, Senior Fellow in the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Michael Kofman delivers a realistic assessment of the latest developments in the Russia-Ukraine war. Kofman explains why Ukraine is in its strongest position since mid-2023, how Russian military commanders reporting false progress to Putin may lead to a mismatch between goals and means in the war, the strategic implications behind Ukraine's recent command changes and political shifts in defense procurement, and why it's critical that NATO learns what it can from Ukrainian force exercises to be prepared to face Russia's next post-war threat. Sir Richard Dearlove and co-host Kate McCann unpack the latest and most significant news stories in geopolitics: the launch of Sweden's own civilian intelligence service, whether President Trump's rhetoric on Iran reflects uncertainty or strategic deception, and the data supporting the skeptical American attitude about AI. AI models in the United States may be ahead of China's in terms of capability, but China far surpasses America in adoption and use. That's what former US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo says about the state of the AI race, and why she believes it's critical for the US and its allies to understand one thing: China is not our friend. She spells out how exactly China is creating technological dependencies, particularly in European countries, why it's still important the West maintains continuous, managed economic competition with China, what social adoption of AI should look like in the US to curb anxieties around job loss, and why she remains optimistic about the promise of AI despite all this. Sir Richard Dearlove and guest co-host Sabrina Singh analyze the events making the biggest geopolitical headlines: FBI Director Kash Patel's upcoming trip to Russia, a nuclear deal between the United States and Saudi Arabia, more changes in defense leadership in Ukraine, and the latest with the war in Iran. Professor Vali Nasr argues that the single objective that's driven Tehran since 1979 has been defending its independence from the US. Author of Iran's Grand Strategy, Nasr says that logic, more than ideology, explains the current war. He unpacks Iran's shift toward hard-nosed nationalism, what leverage it has left, and whether the country will take a more pragmatic approach to geopolitics. Sir Richard Dearlove and guest co-host John Raine talk through the headlines shaping today's geopolitics: Japan's intelligence overhaul, the fallout from Zelensky's clash with his defense minister, China's new AI cooperation push, and the UK's untested new PM Andy Burnham. 03:16 Japan Builds Spy Agency07:35 Ukraine Defense Shakeup11:14 China Pushes AI Rules14:49 New UK Prime Minister18:24 Guest interview begins23:20 From Islam to Nationalism28:15 War Pragmatism and New Leaders32:27 Proxies and Forward Defense38:21 How the War Ends43:43 Gulf Markets and Hormuz48:12 Buying Peace49:49 Energy Shifts and Long Game55:37 One Decision to Watch56:23 Takeaways and Wrap Up Show Notes: Iran's New Grand Strategy: How a Remade Islamic Republic Will Reshape the Middle East | Foreign Affairs: www.foreignaffairs.com/iran/irans-new-grand-strategy Hosted by Sir Richard Dearlove (former MI6 Chief) and guest co-host John Raine (International Institute for Strategic Studies) Learn more about your ad choices. Send me a some feedback! What if the only thing standing between you and the life you truly want is permission? In this episode, Mike Kitko explores one of the most profound realizations from his work with entrepreneurs, leaders, and high performers: the people who transform their lives aren't waiting for better circumstances—they finally give themselves permission to become, do, ask for, receive, and feel what they've wanted all along. Through powerful personal stories and client transformations, Mike explains why permission is the gateway to receiving. Whether it's building a dream business, feeling financially secure, expressing your authentic self, or asking for what you want, lasting change begins the moment you stop waiting for someone else's approval and start giving yourself permission. Key Takeaways1. Permission Is the Beginning of Receiving Receiving doesn't begin with circumstances changing—it begins with a decision. The moment you give yourself permission to want, ask for, receive, and feel what you truly desire, your life begins to change. 2. Most People Are Waiting for Permission They Already Have Whether it's starting a business, changing careers, speaking up, or pursuing a dream, many people remain stuck because they're waiting for someone else to validate what only they can authorize. 3. Your Nervous System Will Resist Growth Growth feels uncomfortable because your nervous system prefers what's familiar. Learning to move through that discomfort is part of becoming more receptive to life. 4. Receiving Includes More Than Money Receiving means allowing yourself to experience confidence, fulfillment, peace, security, significance, love, and every other internal state you've been postponing until "someday." 5. You Become Free the Moment You Stop Waiting You don't need permission from your parents, your boss, your spouse, society, or anyone else. The freedom you've been searching for begins the moment you give yourself permission. Notable Quotes"You don't need permission to be who you want to be, to do what you want to do, to want what you want, to ask for what you want, to receive what you want, or even to feel what you'd rather feel. The only permission you've ever truly needed is your own.""I didn't build Melanie's business. I didn't build Corey's business. I didn't build Matt's business. They did all the work. What I gave them was permission—the permission they wouldn't give themselves—and that became the spark that changed everything.""Receiving starts with one single decision, and that's to give yourself permission to want what you want, ask for what you want, receive what you want, feel what you want, be who you want, and do what you want. It all begins with permission.""Sometimes the greatest act of receiving is giving yourself permission to ask for what you want. I don't need anyone else's permission to invite someone into my work—I only need to give myself permission to be on the receiving end of life.""If you do need permission, then consider this your permission to be who you want, do what you want, want what you want, ask for what you want, receive what you want, and most importantly, feel what you want. Why would you settle for anything less?"Call to ActionIf this episode challenged the way you've thought about permission, spend a few moments reflecting on where you've been waiting for someone else to approve the life you already know you're meant to live. Where have you been withholding permission from yourself? What would change if you simply decided that today was the day you gave it to yourself? If you're ready to stop waiting and finally become fully receptive to the life that's calling you, join Mike for the Built to Give, Rebuilt to Receive Workshop on August 28–29, just outside of St. Louis, Missouri. “Send Coach John a message”I saw a gentle and small reminder that I think we all take for granted a lot during life. It comes from Alan Stein, Jr. (@AlanSteinJr) who is the author of a couple of great books that I read and I think it would be great if you connected with both of them at some point - “Raise Your Game” and “Sustain Your Game”. His quote is this: “One decision can change the course of your entire life. The power to choose is our greatest gift.” I've heard that a few times that our greatest gift we have (and it could be one of a few), is that of choice. I think it's worth it for us to keep working on our choices in life. It's our thinking. Our actions. Our habits. Our words. There's many things that we get to choose throughout life. One thing for sure I know I can keep getting better with the choices I make AND I know I need to do that for sure. Thanks for listening. When Nicola first reached out to me, she said she needed help to lose weight. What she didn't realise was that this journey would change far more than her body. In this episode, Nicola shares her story with complete honesty. From the years of starting over, losing confidence, and feeling trapped in the same cycle, to finally finding an approach that didn't just help her lose weight, but helped her build a completely different life. We talk about what was really keeping her stuck, the biggest mindset shifts she experienced, and why this time felt different from every other attempt before it. But this conversation goes far beyond health and fitness. Since starting coaching, Nicola hasn't just transformed her relationship with food and exercise. She's built lifelong friendships, travelled abroad with us on retreats, stepped outside her comfort zone, and made one of the biggest decisions of her life, leaving a successful career as a Cardiology Specialist Nurse to retrain as a Personal Trainer. This episode is a reminder that when you start changing one area of your life, it often gives you the courage to change others too. If you've ever felt stuck, convinced you've tried everything, or wondered whether lasting change is really possible, I hope Nicola's story reminds you that you're not broken. Sometimes the life you're searching for begins with one decision to finally invest in yourself.

“If your law school experience was anything like mine, chances are they taught you nothing in law school about the business of how to manage a law firm.” – RJon Robins, author of Profit First for Lawyers Sometimes the right book arrives at the right moment. For estate planning attorney Colleen Robinson, Profit First for Lawyers arrived in the mail just as she was in the midst of looking for solutions. She didn’t know what was missing, only that there must be a better way to run a law firm that would give her the clarity, control, and future she wanted. In this episode, Colleen shares how one unexpected gift became the catalyst for a completely different way of thinking about running a law firm. She didn’t just read the book from cover to cover. She acted on what she learned. Each step created forward momentum, ultimately changing her business model and implementing Profit First. Throughout this process, she was able to significantly increase her firm’s revenue while redefining what profit means for her and her family. One Decision Led to the Next Colleen began by learning the Seven Main Parts of Every Successful Law Firm and writing her first business plan. Working with her CEO helped clarify her vision for a business that aligned with her personal, professional, and financial definition of profit. Along the way, she discovered that running a successful law firm wasn’t simply about practicing law better. It was about intentionally building a better business. Profit Changed More Than the Numbers Implementing Profit First changed more than Colleen’s finances. It changed the way she experiences business ownership. Instead of worrying about unexpected tax bills, she sets those funds aside before they’re due. More importantly, she has redefined profit to include time with her family, flexibility in her schedule, and the Total Owner Benefit her business provides. Now the business she is building reflects the life she wants to live, not the other way around. Colleen’s transformative journey began with a book in the mail and a willingness to learn, the courage to act, and the discipline to keep moving forward one decision at a time. Action Steps Complete an honest assessment of why you started your law firm and define what success looks like for you. Create or revisit your business plan with your long-term personal and business goals in mind. If you’ve been waiting for the “perfect” time to implement Profit First, start small and begin today. Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
The Kouri Richins defense did real damage on cross-examination — and still lost on every count. This look back, with defense attorney Bob Motta and retired FBI Behavioral Analysis Chief Robin Dreeke, examines a strategy that exposed genuine weaknesses in the state's case and asks why it wasn't enough. The cracks were there. The jury saw video of investigators pressing the prosecution's central witness, housekeeper Carmen Lauber, for details that would help convict — before her account changed. The lead detective confirmed that four years of investigation produced no fentanyl physically connected to Eric's death. Lauber's credibility was hammered on cross, and her drug-court violations came out mid-trial. The defense rested without calling a single witness, betting it had already built enough doubt through the state's own people.Motta walks through the strategy and the execution, and isolates the one decision he believes may have tipped it. Dreeke breaks down the behavioral side — how a jury weighs a thin physical case against an overwhelming motive narrative, and why the absence of a murder weapon didn't create the doubt the defense needed. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting. This is a clear-eyed autopsy of a defense that found the gaps and still couldn't get through them. Richins has maintained her innocence and indicated she will appeal.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? President Donald Trump has continued his pressure campaign on European defense spending. But in the lead-up to the next NATO Summit, there is another core question to ask: How is Europe coordinating its defense production? This might be the key issue that determines how Trump's pressure campaign pays off in the long run. Kate McCann and Sir Richard Dearlove are joined by Ambassador Julianne Smith (Former United States Permanent Representative to NATO under President Biden) and A. Wess Mitchell, Ph.D. (former senior State Department official who helped shape the first Trump administration's Europe strategy) to break down what's really at stake in Ankara. Plus: Should NATO stay laser-focused on Russia and leave China to the U.S.? How deep is the lingering trust deficit after the Greenland dispute? Got a question or comment? Email us at hello@onedecision.com or drop us a comment on YouTube. We might answer it in next week's episode. Leaders make lots of key decisions—but one decision can be the separator between leadership that sustains and leadership that thrives. In this week's episode, John reveals how the choice to be intentional transforms good leaders into great ones and empowers you to make a real difference. After his lesson, Mark Cole and Traci Morrow unpack the practical steps you can take to apply these principles in your own leadership. Key takeaways: Generational greatness demands intentional actions, a growth mindset, and a commitment to serving others. The best leaders shine their light in the darkest times by focusing on solutions and courageously solving problems rather than cursing the darkness. Daily disciplines, consistency, and a focus on adding value to people are what make a powerful leadership legacy possible. What if the hardest season of your life is actually the doorway to becoming the strongest version of yourself you've ever met? In this conversation with Ken Rideout, I sat across from a man who has lived more lives than most people ever will. From growing up in chaos and addiction, to becoming a Wall Street trader, to falling deep into opioid addiction, and then rebuilding himself into one of the fastest marathon runners in the world over 50 years old. His story is not just about winning races. It is about becoming someone you can respect when no one else is watching. We got real about what it actually feels like to win. Not the highlight reel version, but the truth. Ken said something that stopped me in my tracks. Winning is not the explosion of joy people expect. It is relief. It is the quiet moment where you realize you endured something most people would have quit on. That hit me because it is exactly how success has felt in my own life too. We also went deep into identity. How do you build belief in yourself when you were not raised with it? Ken opened up about going from confidence as a kid, to losing himself in addiction, to rebuilding his identity through effort. Not talent. Not luck. Effort. He made it clear that the biggest lie people believe is that they have limits. That belief alone is what keeps most people stuck living a life far below what they are capable of. One of the most powerful parts of this conversation is how his entire life changed from one decision. Getting sober. That single decision led him to running, which led him to discovering a level of greatness he never knew existed inside him. It is a reminder that you are one decision away from a completely different life. You do not need the whole plan. You just need to start. This episode is for you if you feel stuck, if you are battling something internally, or if you know deep down you are capable of more but have not tapped into it yet. Ken Rideout is living proof that your past does not define you. Your decisions do. Key Takeaways: Why winning rarely feels the way you expect and why relief is often the real reward The lie most people believe about their limitations and how it keeps them stuck How one decision can completely redirect the trajectory of your life Why effort will always outperform talent when sustained over time The difference between quitting and pushing through and how to know which is which How to rebuild your identity when you have lost belief in yourself Sign up for a $1 per month trial period at https://shopify.com/mylett
