Has former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard's career been scripted and controlled by the strange leader of a breakaway Hare Krishna group? Chris Butler formed the Science of Identity organization in the seventies. Gabbard's parents joined when she was two years old. Gabbard claims Butler has no influence on her political life, yet bombshell reporting by the Washington Post piece unearths 25,000 leaked documents to reveal that her guru may have been pulling the strings all along. The kicker? Gabbard resigned two days after journalist Jon Swaine let her team know the article would be published. Meanwhile, another cult-leader story concerns American-born Abdullah Hashem. Claiming to be the “true and only legitimate pope” (as well as successor of Jesus, Saint Peter, and Mohammed), Hashem and 150 followers took over a former orphanage in England—and have been building a significant online following ever since. On April 29, hundreds of police raided Hashem's headquarters, charging the holy man and eight others with human trafficking, sex crimes, and forced marriage. This is the story of how these two cult operators are influencing minds across the pond. Recent reporting in the Washington Post found that Tulsi Gabbard has been taking policy guidance from her guru. We revisit our episode from May 2023, where we lay out Gabbard's lifelong involvement in this cult: What does it mean for a prominent American politician to come into power as the sleeper cell of an eccentric Hindu-American cult? Does she act independently, or has her God-man got her on speed-dial? Can she bridge the divide between left and right with the radiant glow of Krishna consciousness? Joining us today to help answer these questions is Nitai Joseph. He shares some heritage with Gabbard, because he also grew up in a Hare Krishna sect. He holds an MSc. in the Psychology of Coercive Control and has worked across a range of issues connected to ideology and manipulation, including cultic awareness, child sexual abuse prevention, adverse meditation experiences, and organizational ethics and accountability. Carmen talks about a Washington Post report on how former congresswoman and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard was heavily influenced by her spiritual guru Chris Butler of the Science of Identity Foundation (a breakaway group from Hare Krishna), even to the point that Butler was ordering her to push for various policies and writing her communications. She also talks about Vice President JD Vance's new memoir "Communion" around his faith journey. Apologist Rob Phillips, author of "What Every Christian Should Know About the Trinity," addresses the profound truth of how God can be one being and yet be three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Enes Trumić grew up in Bosnia afraid of the dark, shy, and experiencing panic attacks no one had a name for. That suffering became the doorway. In this conversation he walks me through a spontaneous café moment where he watched his own life play like a movie, a year as a Hare Krishna monk chanting eight hours a day, and the morning it erupted into what he calls a "mental death": infinite, expanding nothingness, followed by a dark night of the soul that played out against the backdrop of the Bosnian war. Enes spent fifteen years with a teacher he loved before walking away from the cult around him to discover: We are animals first Thinking is not the enemy This physical life is the only place awareness can be practiced No one holds the copyright on truth If you enjoy this conversation and want to continue, Enes offers consultations and weekly sessions, plus a free 500-page book on his site. The Hare Krishna movement didn't start with chanting monks in airports, it began over 500 years ago with a Bengali mystic named Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. This video traces the full history of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, from its roots in 16th-century devotional Hinduism to its transformation into the global ISKCON movement, brought to the West by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in 1965. We cover the theology of Krishna Consciousness, the bhakti tradition, and how an obscure regional sect became one of the most visible spiritual movements in modern history.Written by Anmol Kohli Co-written by Filip HolmFind me and my music here:https://linktr.ee/filipholmSupport Let's Talk Religion on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/letstalkreligion Or through a one-time donation: https://paypal.me/talkreligiondonateSources/Recommended Reading:Swami Tapasyananda, Bhakti Schools of Vedanta (Sri Ramakrishna Math Chennai,1990).o Chapter on ‘Sri Caitanya Mahāprabhu: Life', pages 323-407.o Chapter on ‘Sri Caitanya Mahāprabhu: Philosophy', pages 408-451.Bryant, Edwin (2004). A Note from James:If I could tell my children to read one post of mine, it would be this post.Influence is how they will navigate a world of uncertainty.Robert Cialdini is the most influential person in the world. And by that I mean, he wrote the book Influence, which sold 3 million copies and defines the six critical aspects of all influence. Now he has a new book, Pre-Suasion, going 10x deeper into the concepts of persuasion. I got him on my podcast so I could ask the 1,000 questions I have.Small story from the book:If you name a restaurant “Studio 97” instead of “Studio 17,” people are more likely to tip higher. If you ask a girl for her phone number outside a flower store, triggering feelings of romance, she is more likely to give it to you than if you ask her outside a motorcycle store. And 500 other stories. The environment is just as important as what you say. Before the podcast began, I gave him a book as a gift: The Anxiety of Influence, a history of poetry. What would poetry have to do with influence and marketing? In all art, since the beginning of time, artists have built on the work of the artists of the generation before them.Beethoven depended on a Mozart to be a Beethoven. Picasso depended on a Cézanne. Without Michelson, there would be no Einstein. But poets, for some reason, would deny being influenced.“I never even read Ezra Pound,” shouted one poet at a critic.Poets want to be seen as original.Nobody is 100% original. This is the anxiety of influence.Almost all of our decisions, and even our creativity, are outsourced to the people around us who influence us: peers, teachers, religion, parents, bosses, etc.Our personality is our own particular mishmash of influences. How we deal with that anxiety, how we recognize the influences, learn from them, and build from them, is the birth of all of our creativity.Let me summarize the seven aspects of influence:Reciprocity: If you give someone a Christmas card, they will want to return the favor.Likability: Make yourself trustworthy. For instance, outline the negatives of dealing with you.Consistency: Ask someone for a favor. Now they will say to themselves, “I am the type of person who does James a favor.”Social Proof: If you are trying to get someone to do X, show them that “a lot of your peers do X.” For instance, if you are at a bar and you are a guy trying to meet women, bring your women friends and not your guy friends with you.Authority: “Four out of five dentists say…”Scarcity: “Only 100 iPhones left at this store!”Unity: You and I are the same because of location, values, religion, etc.I've used each of the above in business. They work. They will make you money. The entire purpose of language is to influence. We are not strong animals. We are weak. The language of influence saved us.Probably a word like “Run!” was the first word spoken.A word of influence. And it worked.I'm still running from the things I fear.So speak to influence.Don't speak to call a flower yellow.Speak to breathe spirit into an idea, to be enthusiastic, to convey emotion, to influence. This is the only way to have an impact with your unique creativity.I gave Robert the book as a gift — reciprocity — assuming we would have a great podcast. And we did.But then I thought later, I can't even remember how Robert got on my podcast.I highly recommend his book in the podcast and even in this post.As he got into his car after the podcast in order to go to his next interview, I started thinking:“Hmmm, who influenced who?”Episode Description:Robert Cialdini wrote the book on persuasion — literally. His classic Influence became one of the defining books on why people say yes, how decisions get shaped, and why the smallest cue in the room can change the outcome of a conversation. In this episode from the archive, James talks with Cialdini about Pre-Suasion, the idea that persuasion starts before the actual pitch. It begins with what people notice, what they feel, what is in the environment, and what frame has already been set before the first real ask is made. They talk about flower shops, restaurant names, voting booths, Warren Buffett's shareholder letters, Anwar Sadat's negotiation instincts, and the rabbi who helped save thousands of lives with one sentence. But the episode is not just about marketing. It is about how people make decisions under uncertainty — and how to use influence ethically, whether you are asking for a job, building a business, negotiating a deal, writing a sales letter, or trying to become more trusted. What You'll Learn:Why persuasion often begins before the message — and how small cues in the environment can make people more receptive. How Cialdini's original six principles of influence work: reciprocity, consistency, social proof, scarcity, authority, and liking. Why Cialdini added a seventh principle, unity — the feeling that “we are the same” — and why it can be even stronger than liking. When to use social proof versus authority, and how to decide which kind of evidence matters most in a given situation. Why admitting weakness first can build trust, and how Warren Buffett uses honesty as a persuasion tool instead of a liability.Timestamped Chapters:[00:00] Introduction and episode preview[01:25] Interview begins — James introduces Robert Cialdini and Pre-Suasion[03:12] The flower shop study: why context changes the answer before the question is asked[05:48] Valentine Street and the hidden power of unrelated cues[06:42] Wine stores, voting booths, and fluffy cloud mattresses[08:10] Are humans irrational, or are shortcuts necessary?[10:17] How the pictures on your wall can change what you write[11:36] The six — now seven — principles of influence[12:00] Reciprocity: the Hare Krishna flower example and the power of personalized gifts[16:40] Consistency: Anwar Sadat, Henry Kissinger, and giving people a reputation to live up to[19:30] Cialdini's undercover research with sales organizations[23:30] Social proof: medical no-shows, restaurant menus, and what happens when a message backfires[26:43] Social proof as feasibility: “people like me can do this”[29:07] Authority: when expert endorsement beats crowd validation[33:55] Why companies lose with better products when they fail to frame the decision properly[35:10] Building authority from zero by using honesty and scarcity[37:05] The Avis “We're number two” campaign and the trust value of admitting weakness[38:24] Warren Buffett's shareholder letters and the persuasive power of leading with mistakes[41:30] Unity: Cialdini's seventh principle of influence[44:24] The rabbi, the Japanese tribunal, and the sentence that saved a community[48:30] Applying unity in job interviews, dating, and negotiations[51:10] Loss aversion and how uncertainty changes persuasion[55:00] Why long sales letters can outperform short ones[55:30] Cialdini's practical framework: find what is true, direct attention to it, then make the case[59:00] Fake scarcity and why false urgency destroys trust[65:00] Closing thoughts on ethical influence and genuine specificityAdditional Resources:Robert Cialdini — Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion — Cialdini's classic book on the core principles of persuasion and compliance. Robert Cialdini — Pre-Suasion: A Revolutionary Way to Influence and Persuade — the follow-up book discussed throughout the episode, focused on what happens before the persuasive message itself. Berkshire Hathaway Shareholder Letters — referenced in the episode as a real-world example of trust-building through candor and weakness-first communication. Daniel Kahneman and Prospect Theory — Cialdini references the role of loss aversion and uncertainty in persuasion; Kahneman received the 2002 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for integrating psychological research into economic decision-making. Chiune Sugihara — the Japanese diplomat connected to the story Cialdini uses to explain unity and shared identity. The Avis “We're Number Two” Campaign — discussed as an example of turning a weakness into credibility by being honest before making the positive case.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We're back… HardLore returns with a very special episode in honor of our late co-host, friend, and brother, Bo Lueders. Youth of Today was Bo's favorite hardcore band of all time, and a constant through-line on this show since the beginning. Now, we're finally joined by YoT/Shelter vocalist and trailblazer of straight edge as a movement: RAY CAPPO, for a 3.5 hour career retrospective interview. It doesn't end there, as our first ever guest co-host is also extra special, we're joined by Harms Way vocalist James Pligge (aka “Youth Crew James”) to round out this perfect tribute to our fallen friend. We start from the very beginning in Danbury, CT, where Ray and Violent Children got a historic head-start from an opportune visit to a radio station, discovering Hare Krishna through Harley Flanagan, meeting Porcell and evolving into Youth of Today and spreading straight edge all around the world, thoroughly BREAK DOWN the Youth of Today discography, founding Revelation AND Equal Vision Records, and the spiritual path that lead to the end of Youth of Today and the humble origin of Shelter. The goal remains the same, carry on the love and dedication for our favorite bands that we've shown every week the last 4 years… But with the new mission of honoring Bo every step of the way. This week, some of the stories on our show inspired college student art — including a vivid image of a bear smashing a clarinet. Also, a Hare Krishna community in West Virginia serves vegetarian food made in three sacred kitchens. And, COVID-19 exposed the contempt society has for marginalized people. One author says, these folks are anything but passive. You'll hear these stories and more this week, Inside Appalachia.

Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam says that when you control the tongue, then all the other senses become controlled after that. Then, by that practice of chanting Hare Krishna, you will come to a point where it tastes good and you don't want to stop, and then automatically—systemically—you'll feel satisfied. All the senses become satisfied when you please Krishna by chanting with your tongue: jihvā ādau—first thing, the tongue. And toleration. We do various kinds of duties, and we also do austerities, and in those things you have to learn the art of toleration. Krishna mentions that in the Bhagavad-gītā in many different places, but it serves us well. I'll tell you how to do it. It's called "Tender Loving Neglect." So, there's a way in which there are urges that come up, agitations. You don't say, "No, get out of here, never ever come back!" You just say, "Yeah, I know you're there. I'll get to you later. For now, I'm not going to do anything." As Haridāsa Ṭhākura did—when a prostitute came, he didn't say, "Scram!" He said, "I'll be with you in a minute, I've got to finish my rounds." We know how to put things off. If you've ever had an important paper to write, and then you kept doing everything else—you washed your whole room, you figured out a formula for creating more efficient gasoline, whatever you might do to avoid writing the paper—that's procrastination. Do the same thing when there are sense urges: neglect them. TLN instead of TLC. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://vaisesikadasayatra.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://thefourquestionsbook.com/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #japajolt #makejapagreatagain #chantharekrishnaandbehapy #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose

“In the Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika (115) it is said that the two brothers Jagai and Madhai were formerly the doorkeepers named Jaya and Vijaya, who later became Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu. Jagai and Madhai were born in respectable brahmana families, but they adopted the professions of thieves and rogues and thus became implicated in all kinds of undesirable activities, especially woman-hunting, intoxication and gambling. Later, by the grace of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Shri Nityananda Prabhu, they were initiated, and they got the chance to chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra.” (Shrila Prabhupada, Chaitanya Charitamrita, Adi 10.1.20 Purport)
The main objective of varṇāśrama, is to surrender to Kṛṣṇa ultimately—but while we're practicing Kṛṣṇa consciousness, there are ways in which we can also make sure that we have, so to speak, "two feet on the ground." Consider the fact that chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa is sufficient for going back home, back to Godhead; nothing else is needed. That's proved in the last verse of the Śaraṇāgati by Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, where he describes how, by his chanting of the mahā-mantra, Lord Kṛṣṇa personally comes and takes him by the hand—or more accurately, the Holy Name comes and takes him by the hand—back to Godhead, and introduces him to his relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead in the spiritual world. However, you'll find in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta that although Lord Caitanya says there's no need for any initiation even for chanting the Holy Name of the Lord, the purport is specifically about (and it's written by Jīva Gosvāmī; Prabhupāda's transcription of his directions on this) that initiation is very much needed because, in order to purely chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, one also has to have the pāñcarātrika system. I'm making a parallel between this and the idea of varṇāśrama, because there's a way in which, when we come into the material world, we're prone to confusion. There are complexities and impurities. Therefore, when we have a regulation of the daivi-varṇāśrama—a way in which we can be properly situated at the various segments of our life when we have a particular psycho-physiological nature—then we can remain steady in the chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra. So, we have a dual existence in this world: we have our body-mind and we are the ātmā. But the endeavor to continue chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa and be engaged is helped by the regulation that we get from the varṇāśrama system. Therefore, the two things complement one another in that sense. However, if somebody thinks that varṇāśrama is the ultimate goal and forgets about Kṛṣṇa, then it's useless and has no real purpose, because it's related to the three modes of material nature. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://vaisesikadasayatra.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://thefourquestionsbook.com/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose

Mark Blocksom found himself inside Synanon in the 80s, a notorious rehab program criticized for abusing its members, and was rescued by friends who were actively working to help deprogram members of the bigger cults at that time, including the Moonies and Hare Krishna. They hired Mark to help share his experiences, but what he gravitated to were the actual rescues of cult victims, which were generally illegal kidnappings requested by family members.Mark shares his adventures and the inner satisfaction and the global fame he earned doing this work. His own life story was more complicated, and while he ultimately prevailed over his personal battles, he recently passed away. Rest in peace, Mark. It's Witness Wednesday! Join Todd on campus in downtown Atlanta where he meets an interesting cast of characters, among whom is a Hare Krishna devotee who is radically inclusive in his religion… but is he right? When real people are introduced to the Jesus of the Bible, worldviews are challenged, and hearts are changed. Segment 1 • Tim (Hare Krishna) claims every religion works—including Christianity—so does truth even matter? • If God is “everything,” is He also a lamppost? The worldview starts to unravel fast. • Big question: can mutually exclusive religions all be true at the same time? Segment 2 • Tim affirms Jesus… but only as a “spiritual master”—not the only way. • Jesus' exclusive claim (“I am the way”) directly collides with Tim's mix-and-match belief system. • Are you allowed to reinterpret Jesus to fit your worldview? Segment 3 • Hannah admits she's “on the fence,” citing science, church history, and bad Christian examples. • The deeper issue surfaces: are objections really intellectual—or rooted in something else? • If a God exists who solves guilt, shame, and death—would you actually want Him? Segment 4 • Hannah claims moral goodness—then walks through lying, stealing, lust, and guilt. • The standard shifts from her view to God's law, exposing real accountability. • If we're truly guilty before God, what's the solution? ___ Thanks for listening! The 1960s weren't just a musical revolution—they were a spiritual one. In this episode, we reflect on George Harrison's role in that shift: from global superstardom to sincere spiritual seeker. After "meeting everyone worth meeting" and reaching the height of fame, George realized something was still missing. That insight led him beyond counterculture and into mantra meditation, the Bhagavad-gītā, and open support of Krishna consciousness. We explore how his faith, humility, and conviction helped carry the Hare Krishna mantra into the mainstream—and why his search for a "higher taste" still resonates today. ******************************************************************** LOVE THE PODCAST? Krishna bhakti went global not through wealth, planning, or infrastructure, but through faith — the kind of faith that sends teenagers across oceans with no money, no guarantees, and no backup plan. In this episode, recorded at Govardhan Eco Village, Raghunath speaks with Mahāmāyā and Bali Mardana, whose personal memories reveal the unpredictable, humorous, and deeply human early days of the Hare Krishna movement — a time when chanting became survival, surrender became strength, and Śrīla Prabhupāda's presence inspired ordinary people to attempt extraordinary things. ******************************************************************** LOVE THE PODCAST? This week, some of the stories on our show inspired college student art — including a vivid image of a bear smashing a clarinet. Also, a Hare Krishna community in West Virginia serves vegetarian food made in three sacred kitchens. And COVID exposed the contempt society has for marginalized people. One author says, these folks are anything but passive. You'll hear these stories and more this week, Inside Appalachia.

On today's episode, Lawfare Managing Editor Tyler McBrien sits down with Joseph Kellner, an assistant professor of history at the University of Georgia to discuss his latest book, “The Spirit of Socialism: Culture and Belief at the Soviet Collapse,” which examines the millions of Soviet people who embarked on a “spirited and highly visible search for new meaning” during the dissolution of the U.S.S.R.They discuss the questions of epistemic authority, of cultural identity, and of history's ultimate meaning that drove people to seek new spiritual meaning during this period, as well as the era's many colorful characters, including Hare Krishnas, astrologers, doomsayers, and neo-Pagans who pushed bio-healing, folk baths, and other answers to these questions. They also talk about why, when a superpower declines, shared reality dissolves. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare.
