We've got a new series to talk through movies that were snubbed for or didn't win major Oscars as we lead into awards season! We start off with a living Looney Tunes cartoon, which makes sense given that Looney Tunes based itself off these movies. The Marx Brothers were already comedy legends when this film came along, but director Leo Carey brings a dash of satire that makes for an incredible film, all wrapped up in under 70 minutes of run time. This isn't just a comedy, it's a masterpiece, and we're catching up on it today. Hail, hail Freedonia as we watch Duck Soup on Have a Good Movie! The latin beat was all the rage when my dad was a teenager and young adult. You can tell he fell for it in a big way with all the Mambos, Cha Chas, Rhumbas, and Salsas he has in his collection. And like I've said before, it's hard not to dance when the bongos, congas, timbales, and claves are working their magic. Dana and Tom discuss the original political satire in Duck Soup (1933): directed by Leo McCarey, music and writing by Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby with Arthur Sheekman and Nat Perrin, starring Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo Marx.Plot Summary: "Duck Soup," a classic comedy directed by Leo McCarey and starring the irreverent Marx Brothers, is a cinematic tour de force that gleefully satirizes politics and war. Released in 1933, the film unfolds in the fictional realm of Freedonia, a nation on the brink of bankruptcy and political chaos. Groucho Marx, in his iconic role as Rufus T. Firefly, is appointed as the country's leader, bringing his signature wit and anarchic charm to the forefront. As Firefly navigates diplomatic relations with the neighboring nation of Sylvania, chaos ensues, leading to a riotous blend of slapstick humor and razor-sharp satire."Duck Soup" remains a timeless masterpiece, celebrated for its brilliant wordplay, absurd antics, and a biting critique of governmental absurdity that resonates across generations. The film's legacy endures as a testament to the Marx Brothers' unparalleled comedic genius and their ability to use laughter as a powerful weapon against the follies of the world. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast) or find our Facebook page at Greatest Movie of All-Time Podcast. For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/duck-soup-1933For the entire rankings list so far, go to:Full Graded List - Greatest Movies of All-Time Ronny Duncan Studios

Not a fan of the Marx Brothers' “Go West”? Wish it had been written by the guys behind “Duck Soup”? Well, that was the original plan. Acclaimed screenwriter Scott Alexander returns to help us examine the film's early scripts, as penned by the legendary team of Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby. Groucho as a leering divorce lawyer, Chico as a phony fortune teller, Harpo chasing women and actually acting like Harpo...who couldn't love that? Apparently, MGM couldn't; as they eventually changed everything...including the century in which the film takes place. Scott gives us a screenwriter's perspective on what happened, theorizes why Kalmar, Ruby, and their work were discarded…and portrays Margaret Dumont in a possible career-changing turn. Need we say more?
The Rising Star Ranch is one of Harry Ruby's favorite places, and Virginia Gregg, their livestock leasing coordinator, one of her favorite people. That's why, when Virgina suspects something is going on at the ranch, Harry brings the case to Will. Is it a family squabble, or something much more sinister? It'll take the brains of all three Rubys, as well as another secret talent of Frankie and a VERY smart horse, to figure it all out.
