Today on Crushing Classical, you'll hear my interview with Ariel Grossman, Founder & Artistic Director of Ariel Rivka Dance. I've never talked with a choreographer before and I just loved finding all of the parallels between our worlds.  This episode is brought to you today by Happiest Musician Coaching. You are amazing, and I believe in you. What are you trying to create?  What do you need your career to be and do for you? What are you not seeing that you need to do and work on?  I love these conversations and supporting musicians like you. For a limited time, I'm offering a free 30-minute call to get you some clarity around your next steps, and see how I might help you get unstuck!  Ariel Rebecca (Rivka) Grossman is a native New Yorker, who trained at LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts and Joffrey Ballet School. In 2008, she founded an all-female contemporary company, Ariel Rivka Dance. Most recently, Ariel received a 2023 Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Ariel's work has been presented worldwide, including BAM Fisher, NJPAC, Bryant Park, NYLA, Baruch Performing Arts Center, Martha Graham Studio Theater, NYU Tisch, Rutgers University, Roxbury Performing Arts Center, and in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Houston, Cleveland, Florida, Oklahoma, Detroit, Memphis, Istanbul, Turkey, and in 2023, Perigord, France and Bari, Italy. She has been commissioned by Dance Lab NY, Konverjdans, Ballet Vero Beach, and Skidmore College. Collaborations include Rioult Dance NY, Taylor 2, Heidi Latsky, Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company, and Sean Curran. Ariel is a past recipient of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (New) Moves Fellowship, Monira Performance Residency, and a Nimbus Arts Center artist residency. ARD is an awardee of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, the Nathan Cummings Foundation, The Charles & Joan Gross Family Foundation, the O'Donnell-Green Music & Dance Foundation, Jersey City Council of the Arts, and New Jersey State Council on the Arts and more. Ariel draws inspiration from the struggles and joys of the human experience, particularly through being a woman and mother of two. Through collaboration, Ariel encourages her artists to bring themselves to the work—molding pieces that are striking, evocative, and multi-layered. This conversation was fascinating. Firstly, because I loved hearing Ariel talk about her art in a way that was both brand new to me and also completely relatable. The connections are so clear and it's amazing to think about movement, interpretation, and leadership in a totally different field than my own.  Secondly, because I loved hearing her take real ownership of her own strengths - I don't hear this nearly often enough from people, even the amazingly accomplished people I'm interviewing right here, and ESPECIALLY from working musicians.  I know you will love this interview. If you are in NYC, catch Ariel Rivka Dance's 15th Annual Season presented by NYU Tisch at the Jack Crystal Theater on May 31st-June 2nd, and a special family matinee co-presented by 14Y Theater on June 3rd.  Here's a teaser for her upcoming collaboration, Never Fade Away Follow Ariel Rivka Dance on Instagram at @arielrivkadance or @arielgrossman; or on Facebook Thanks for joining me on Crushing Classical!  Theme music and audio editing by DreamVance. You can join my email list HERE, so you never miss an episode! Or you could hop on a short call with me to brainstorm your next plan.  I'm your host, Jennet Ingle. I love you all. Over the last year our education model has been flipped on it’s head, and many parents, are finding that the current way public education is modelled is no longer working for them. It’s a huge discussion topic, and over the next few months one we’ll be diving into it deeper as we look at alternative models of schooling and ways to inspire our kids in their education journey. Heather MacTaggart, founder of UnschoolingSchool.com believes there is no “school as usual’ in this Covid moment and now is the time to create schooling that works for kids. Anne Brodie joins me twice this week. First she’s here with the latest entertainment reviews including the edge of your seat suspense thriller The Little Things starring megastars Denzel Washington, Jared Leto and Rami Malik. Plus an understated, and moving performance from Justin Timberlake in Palmer on Apple TV, Penguin Bloom staring Naomi Watts, and Amazon Prime’s Small Axe. How’s your gut? In the past few years we’ve learned that the state of our microbiome can be directly related to everything from mood disorders to chronic disease. Most recently, science has discovered that poor gut health could put you at risk of more severe outcomes if you contract COVID-19. Dr. Sapna Makhija Gastroenterologist and Co-founder of GI Health Centre in Burlington, Ontario joins me to share what you need to know. In the month of January we talked about resilience a lot, but simply talking about and defining resilience isn’t enough. Sometimes you need to see it in action. Heidi Latsky has done just that with her short film Suspended Disbelief, featuring Erin Ball, a circus artist, who when lost on a winter hike for six days suffered such severe frostbite that she had to have both legs amputated from the knees down. Anne Brodie is back for a second segment this week with an exclusive interview with Emma Caulfield, who plays Dottie, Queen of the Suburbs on Disney Plus’s new Wandavison. If you haven’t started watching this yet, I can confirm it’s a must see and of course once you get to know Emma a little better, you’ll definitely want to tune in. Finally, I haven’t highlighted a lot of Canadian musicians on What She Said recently but when Julie NEff’s EP was sent to me I knew I had to have her on for two reasons, 1) Julie’s voice is mesmerizing and the songs are too and 2) how can I not have someone on who titled their album Over it because if that doesn’t describe every Canadian woman right now, I don’t know what does.

In this episode, Jerron Herman shares his story of defying the odds. Born with cerebral palsy, he was told he would never be able to walk, eat or live on his own. Fast forward to now being a strong advocate for disabled athletes and performers, Jerron speaks of his experiences, dreams and hope for the future. ---Jerron Herman is an interdisciplinary artist creating through dance, text, and visual storytelling. He's based in New York City. Jerron was born and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area where he began his career pursuing performance and playwriting. In 2009 he moved to New York City to study Dramatic Writing at the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Continuing his dream of crafting stories to be performed, he then studied Media, Culture and the Arts, with an emphasis in Art History and Playwriting at The King's College where he graduated in 2013. While in school he was "discovered" by a choreographer who led him to audition for Heidi Latsky, quickly becoming a key member of her company, Heidi Latsky Dance. Jerron has performed at venues like Lincoln Center and The Whitney Museum of Art, resulting in the New York Times calling him, “the inexhaustible Mr. Herman.” As a strong advocate for disabled athletes and performers, he has been a featured model for both Tommy Hilfiger and Nike. His performances have begun to shed light on an often overlooked niche of performance. He currently sits on the Board of Trustees at Dance/USA and is a proud member of The Disabled List and WITH, brain children of innovative thought leader, Liz Jackson. As a writer, Jerron was a finalist for the inaugural Lark Play Development Lab/Apothetae Playwriting Fellowship. I enjoyed my time at The Divulge Dancers Film Festival in November 2018 which inspired 5 essential elements to empower as an artist. http://annettbone.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Divulge-2-11.17.2018-2.jpg () Empower the element of your communication skills. One thing is to work on is enunciation. I had a hard time understanding one of the dancers on Get Lite. Empower the element of possibility thinking. Put the law of attraction into play. One of the dancers did this in Get Lite because he said he was going to Paris and London to teach and it happened. Get the creativity going toward the results you want and not what you don't want. Empower adversity into an advantage. Mother's Balls featured Amber's adversity of a strict background which forced her to be creative. Empower inclusivity in dance and other art forms. Making Waves with the Down's Syndrome dancers was very heartwarming. I am also reminded of other companies that are inclusive such as Axis, Heidi Latsky, Infinite Flow and Leigh Purtill Ballet Company. Empower Other's Skill Set. I love getting around other people that are more advanced in their skill sets than I am. A great example of someone who always empowered others to be better was Gene Kelly. http://annettbone.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Divulge-2-11.17.2018-145.jpg () Links/Info from this session:http://annettbone.com (Get my FREE Audio Resource) https://www.divulgedancersfilmfestival.com/?lightbox=dataItem-jm5ogz3w (Divulge Dancers Film Festival ) http://www.axisdance.org (Axis Dance Company) http://www.heidilatskydance.org (Heidi Latsky ) http://infiniteflowdance.org (Infinite Flow Dance) http://www.leighpurtillballet.com (Leigh Purtill Ballet Company) http://annettbone.com/067 (Interview with Marisa Hamamoto) http://annettbone.com/110 (Interview with Ally Vega) http://annettbone.com/185/ (Interview with Patricia Ward Kelly) http://heididuckler.org (Heidi Duckler) Would you review The DancePreneuring Studio?I would be extremely appreciative if you would subscribe and leave your feedback on Apple Podcasts or Stitcher Radio. Here, choreographer, Heidi Latsky, brings us Soliloquy, a film created from the poetic interweaving of ten movement portraits, which embrace difference and the inherent isolation of being human with fierceness and frankness. The film addresses our propensity to judge people by their physical appearance and defies our preconceptions about dance, revealing virtuosity and beauty in unexpected ways. This is the first of three films being produced by Dance for Film on Location at Montclair State University, a partnership between forward thinking choreographers and filmmakers, which purposes to increase access to dance in the 21st Century.

My guest, Carrie Ahern, is a dancer and an independent choreographer whose work shows a powerful sense of visual order and psychological depth. We met in the dressing room at St. Mark's Church, home of Danspace Project, to talk about "Red," which premiered there in 2006, and her new piece--"The Unity of Skin"--which will premiere on April 3 and run through April 5. To listen to original music composed for "The Unity of Skin" by cellist Greg Heffernan, visit http://www.carrieahern.com/calendar/calendar.html. BIO Carrie Ahern, a Wisconsin native, is an independent dance and performance artist who has been based in New York City since 1995. She worked primarily as a freelance performer/choreographer for over a dozen dance and theater companies until forming Carrie Ahern Dance in 2005. Her current evening length project, "The Unity of Skin" is commissioned by Danspace Project for performances April 3-5, 2008 and is being presented at Baltimore Theatre Project March 6-9, 2008. Investigations into "The Unity of Skin" were shown at Dance Conversations at the Flea, Danceworks in Milwaukee, Movement Research at Judson Church and at Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX) as part of their 2007 Space Grant Residency. Her studies of Ancient Greek Philosophy for this piece were funded, in part, by Fractured Atlas' Creative Development Grant. Carrie's first evening length work "Red" (2006) was commissioned both by Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church and the Guggenheim Works-and Process Series. Her shorter works have been seen at over a dozen venues in New York City such as Danspace Project, P.S.122, Dixon Place, the Angel Orensanz Foundation, Dance Space Center (now DNA), Chashama, The Flea and Soundance among others. Nationally and internationally, her work has been presented at Baltimore Theatre Project, Danceworks and Walker's Point Arts Center in Milwaukee, Le Regard du Cygne in Paris and at the Festival D'OFF in Avignon, France. She self-produced two seasons in conjunction with her frequent collaborator, Jennifer A. Cooper: "Alteregomania" at Cunningham in 1999 and "Exploding Plastic Acorns" at the Williamsburg Art Nexus (WAX) in 2003. In 2002, Bessie award winning dancer Carolyn Hall commissioned a solo, with an original score by Grammy award winner Matt Darriau and Ivan Goff. As a performer Carrie has had the pleasure of working with many artists here in New York City including, Pat Cremins/Wyoming, Heather Kravas, Heidi Latsky, Allyson Green, Nina Winthrop, Jeffrey Frace, Ridge Theater, Donna Bouthillier and Jennifer A. Cooper. Upcoming choreographic experiments include a collaborative effort with The Nietzsche Circle -the exciting and daunting task of using Nietzsche's "Thus Spake Zaranthustra" as a jumping off point for a dance. She is exploring remounting 2006's "Red" for the crumbling and infamous Eastern State Penitentiary. Ahern is a sought-after teacher of pilates and yoga throughout NYC. She has taught improvisation at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and dance technique in the New York City Public Schools.
