In the ever-evolving world of neurorehabilitation, Dr. Ryan Lovell, PT, DPT, NCS, ATP has carved out a unique path that blends his clinical expertise with a passion for research and storytelling simply through curiosity and exploration. As a physical therapist, doctoral student, and podcast host, Ryan's multifaceted career serves as an inspiring example of the diverse opportunities available within the neuro field. Ryan's journey began with a strong foundation in the medical field, influenced by his mother's work as a registered nurse. Drawn to the intersection of sports medicine and neurology, Ryan found his calling in physical therapy, particularly after a fortuitous opportunity to intern at Casa Colina Hospital. This experience ignited his interest in neurorehabilitation and set him on a course to pursue a neuro residency, specialized certifications, and eventually, PhD candidacy in Rehabilitation and Movement Science. As a researcher, Ryan has tackled intriguing questions, from exploring the use of transcranial stimulation devices for stroke and spinal cord injury rehabilitation to investigating clinical biomarkers in post-concussion syndrome. His work has highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between clinicians and product companies, ensuring that new technologies are not only safe but also truly beneficial for patients. Ryan's passion for storytelling has also found expression through his podcast, The Parallax Effect. Recognizing the power of narrative in making complex scientific concepts accessible, Ryan has used this platform to share diverse perspectives and foster meaningful dialogue within the neuro community. His ability to seamlessly blend his scientific expertise with creative flair serves as a testament to the value of interdisciplinary thinking. As Ryan continues to navigate the realms of research, teaching, and podcasting, his story serves as a reminder of the boundless opportunities that await those willing to embrace the intersection of science, technology, and storytelling. Our summer-long 'Power of Play' series starts now with special guest Allie Ticktin. Allie's mission is to empower children and their families through sensory play so that they can thrive through childhood and beyond. Allie is the author of the book, Play to Progress, where she provides parents with an overview of all 8 (yes, 8) senses and gives parents ways to enhance those senses at home. Allie uses the science of child development and the joy of play to boost childrens' confidence and enhance development within all areas of their life, from social and emotional to physical and academic. Allie believes that the best way to support children is by arming their parents, from inception, with the knowledge and skills necessary to encourage their child's development for success through childhood and beyond. Allie began her work in pediatric development at the University of Michigan, where she earned her B.S. in Movement Science, and continued her studies at USC, where she received her M.A. and Clinical Doctorate in Occupational Therapy. Allie is certified in Sensory Integration and hopes that one day one day quality open ended play will be considered as important as learning the ABC's. When not at work, you can find Allie at the beach engaging her own sensory system, outside enjoying nature or on her spin bike. Allie also loves to bake vegan treats, read and color in mindfulness coloring books, which are her own regulation tools. This time we do it through the unique lens of translating research into practice. In episode 102 we're once again joined by David Geslak, a pioneer in the realm of autism and exercise who was on the podcast in episode 69. David is joined by Dr. Haylie Miller, an acclaimed researcher on autism and exercise from the University of Michigan. Our conversation is an eye-opening exploration of the theory and research on exercise and autism, aimed at equipping fitness professionals with the knowledge to successfully bridge the gap with the autistic population.Dive right in as we illuminate the unique challenges faced by individuals with autism and how the research informs an evidence-based methodology for working autistic individuals. Born with a mild form of Cerebral Palsy, Trent experienced pain and stiffness every day from the time he was a child. However, Trent's creative problem-solving abilities kicked in transforming his movement capabilities to participate in his love for sports. What Trent discovered to repair his own body became the foundation for what would be his life's work. He attended Western Michigan University where he received a BFA in Dance requiring studies in Movement Science and Training –Feldenkrais, Laban Movement Analysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Kinesiology, and Anatomy. Trent pursued a career as a professional dancer where he performed on stages throughout the country and abroad. As a movement professional, Trent saw a path where he could help others who had movement limitations. He opened up his studio as a way to work with clients and train other movement professionals in the work he had been practicing to repair his own limitations. For more than 20 years, Trent has taught his transformational neuro-movement methods and tools to thousands of clients and movement professionals across the globe. Trent's work has helped many people move past their most debilitating situations -- children who struggle with focus; seniors who have lost their balance and mobility, individuals experiencing neurological conditions; and athletes who have suffered concussions, injuries, and other debilitating situations. Today, Trent's mission is to get his methods and tools out to everyone who needs help. The Fire Up Your Brain program was created as a fun, engaging, and affordable way to support this mission. In addition to his professional teaching, Trent spends his time problem-solving and educating the world through his AskTrent Live programming, building a network of BrainSpeed Coaches, and speaking engagements to further educate the public on enhancing brain performance.

Dr. Phil Wagner is founder-CEO of Sparta Science, a physician and a strength coach whose own athletic career as a football and rugby player was cut short by a series of avoidable training injuries. Dr. Wagner's commitment to data-driven coaching and athlete development began as a strength coach for U.C. Berkeley and UCLA and as a professional rugby coach in New Zealand and Australia.Frustrated by the lack of evidence-based approaches to athletic performance and injury prevention within professional sports, Phil received his medical degree from USC focused on biomechanics. Phil's passion for protecting athlete health and longevity through injury resilience coupled with his medically-oriented human performance mindset inspired him to found Sparta Science, a movement technology and data science company focused on improving musculoskeletal health.During Phil's time as a college athlete and strength and conditioning coach at UC, Berkeley, he became frustrated with the lack of evidence-based approaches to performance injury. This experience inspired Phil to blend machine learning with practitioner expertise to generate data that helps us better understand the complex human body. Learn More https://spartascience.com/

What do you DO with your newborn when you get home with them? Today we're chatting about activities you can do with your baby. Today's guest is Allie Ticktin.
