"Artivist is a combination of Artist and Activism. I write about Bayard Rustin who was basically the right hand of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for many years. He was a gay Quaker from Pennsylvania and a black man, and there were a lot of issues with him working with Dr. King. Bayard was able to get all of the celebrities and everybody who wanted to support him at the March in Washington and made a lot of amazing changes. His art, his creativity, and in combination with the activism is what got the name Artivist. Dan Erickson is the creator and showrunner of Apple TV's Emmy© Award-winning series, SEVERANCE. After attending NYU's Tisch School, where he received a Masters in Dramatic Writing. Upon moving to Los Angeles, he delivered food and worked in a string of office jobs, all while conceiving and writing the original pilot for Severance. The script became the first TV pilot ever selected for the annual Bloodlist, which ultimately led to a creative partnership with Ben Stiller's Red Hour Productions, Endeavor Content, and Apple. Atypically, this also led to Dan becoming Showrunner, retaining huge levels of creative control and driving the production - and the show became an instant cult and critical hit largely due to its powerful and original storyworld. In this episode, Dan talks to fellow storyteller and CEO and co-founder of Kinetic Energy Entertainment, Diana Williams about his career and building the show's mind-bending world. Dan and Diana discuss the intricate process of story world design, exploring how Dan's original play - and real life office experience - inspired the show. Dan relates the journey of the show from concept to screen (and as unknown writer to showrunner) including early pitches and his experiences working with Ben Stiller and Chris Black. We also learn what it means to be a showrunner on your first series and the demanding balancing act of creative and organisational priorities it entails. This includes in particular the focus on tone and how establishing the right tone - and maintaining this - is one of the most important and challenging aspects of the role.

It was there her passion for wine knowledge and the spark for her future endeavor was ignited. In 2011, Nicole's good friend Mark gifted her a 32 bottle wine refrigerator as a housewarming gift. Of course, she had to fill it! She had a party asking people to bring wine. She gave them some parameters (She drank red almost exclusively at that time) and sent her friends on a wine hunt around town. It was an incredible success. Her guests got to try different wines and her wine chest was magically filled. Little did she know, she had just hosted her first home wine tasting. In December 2013, her friend Niesha invited her to a wine tasting. She accepted without hesitation. The hostess, Marla graciously welcomed Nicole into her home. The wine tasting was fantastic, conducted by an independent representative of a national home wine tasting company. Nicole tasted new wines, beginning a love affair with South African wines. The group of women she was introduced to that night bonded over their enjoyment of wine. They decided to host a party monthly at each other's homes. In January 2014, Nicole's friend had a wine tasting in her home. The time for the tasting to begin was approaching, Nicole asked “Where was the ‘wine lady?' Her friend answered she didn't know. She had not talked to her in a month. Having a house full of guests, Nicole gathered a few of her wines then called a friend, Taffanee and asked to “borrow” a few more bottles. She brought a case. That night Nicole became ‘The Wine Lady.'Nicole guided the guests through a tasting of twelve wines from around the world, sharing what she learned with others. That night she helped many people find their way from, “I only drink…” to, “Wow, this wine is delicious.” This gave me great pleasure. Her friends suggested she consider getting into the wine business. She started doing some initial research, then moved on with my life. She had plays and streaming series to finish writing. Her interest in being in the wine industry was refueled in Spring 2015 after several incidents occurred at corporate wine tastings – her name not being on the attendee list, her guests almost being turned away, being seated in the back and continuously told to be quiet despite her wine tribe purchasing a lot of wine. The spark was reignited. In June 2016, Nicole attended Open Bite Night, a community block party to support a friend. I mentioned to a friend, Niesha, “There should be a vendor who only sells adult beverages.” She said, “Why not you?” A few weeks later, Niesha contacted me to let me know she had registered me for the event. There was no charge for first-time participants and they provided the table and chairs. I decided to no longer put off my dream and step out on faith. “Sip & Share Wines” was born.On October 1, 2016, Sip & Share officially opened for business at Open Bite Night: Ridiculous. We SOLD OUT of our handcrafted Red and White Sangrias (now Abundance and Awaken). The Sangrias quickly gained a following, from being served by-the-glass out of a punch bowl to people wanting more than a glass to enjoy as they checked out the various vendors at the different events where we set up.Enter Mason jars with straws in the lids. It was a hit! Then folks begin to ask to take Sip & Share Sangrias home with them. In March 2018, Sip & Share Wines became a licensed federal winery and began the process of producing a diversity of vegan wines.Gratitude to everyone who has supported, continues to support and those who will support Sip & Share Wines on our journey. Welcome to Season 2, Episode 1. Author of The Playwright's Survival Guide and Perfect Ten and ten-minute playwright virtuoso, Gary Garrison swings by Playwright's Spotlight. In this discussion, we discuss progressing as a playwright, structuring a ten minute play, the differences between a sketch and a ten-minute play, and developing characters. We also touch on the necessity of artistic statements, what should be included in character descriptions as well as submission letters. And that's just the start. We cover a wide range of terrain that any playwright will find beneficial. As with each episode from Season 1, I hope you enjoy this conversation. Gary Garrison served as the Executive Director of the Dramatists Guild of America for the past decade. Prior to his work at the Guild, he filled the posts of Artistic Director, Producer and full-time faculty member in the Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where he produced more than 45 different festivals of new work, collaborating with hundreds of playwrights, directors and actors. He is on the Tony Administration Committee for the Tony Awards and the program director for the Summer Playwriting Intensive for the Kennedy Center. He is the author of the critically acclaimed The Playwright's Survival Guide: Keeping the Drama in Your Work and Out of Your Life, Perfect Ten: Writing and Producing the Ten Minute Play, A More Perfect Ten, and two volumes of Monologues for Men by Men. His plays include Too Quick to Pick, Ties That Bind, Skirting the Issue, Caught Without Candy, Game On, Verticals and Horizontals, Padding The Wagon, Rug Store Cowboy, Oh Messiah Me, The Big Fat Naked Truth, Scream With Laughter, Smoothness With Cool, and When A Diva Dreams. #031 - Welcome to another episode of Quorum, where we believe that contributing to a DAO is the best way to find engaging and rewarding work in the new Web3 economy. In today's show I spoke with Frank America, Co-Founder of The Rug — which is a “mostly credible” news source, selling limited edition NFTs of articles that satirize Web3 events. Frank America is an essayist, joke-writer, emcee, and narrator. He has a background in English Literature, Dramatic Writing, and Communications. Frank is the Co-founder of The Rug News, and a Content Manager at Bankless Publishing. We discussed: how to come to consensus on what's funny in Web3, building a decentralized writers room, Frank and my favorite headlines from The Rug, and why Web3 is so serious. ======================= Resources:

Somehow, we keep talking about food on this show. In this episode, we cover vegan Puerto Rican food, spirit animals, and an old tale of an escaped slave named Carabali. A complete transcript of this episode will be available on latinxlitmag.com on Friday July 1. Kim Vasquez grew up in Puerto Rico and moved to New York to study Dramatic Writing at Tisch School of the Arts NYU. The lack of representation and diversity in children's books drove her to write a middle-grade Latinx mystery that she's currently querying while working on another. She's had various articles curated and published on Medium among them, “Green Plantains and Memories of mi Isla” and “An Afternoon in la Plaza del Mercado". She also had a short story, "The Lady in White" published by The Acentos Review. You can follow Kim on Twitter at @KimVwriter

On today's episode, I talk to TV writer Dan Erickson. Originally from Olympia, Washington, Dan earned a Masters in Dramatic Writing from NYU's Tisch School before moving to LA where he worked a number of day jobs and journeyman writing jobs for places like Super Deluxe and things like Spike's Lip Sync Battle Pre-Show. In 2016, his hourlong pilot, Severance, became the first TV script ever included on The Bloodlist, an industry list of the best unproduced scripts. This led to a meeting with Ben Stiller's production company, and eventually the show Severance, which is easily one of the best of the last decade. Its first season on Apple TV+ is just wrapping up, and it's already been renewed for a second! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.
In this episode, guest Amanda Schaefer shares a powerful devotional about the woman with the alabaster jar who anointed Jesus. She shares about how we can all find ourselves in the woman's story; sinful, often invisible, well-aware of our shortcomings, longing to be seen and accepted by our Savior, Jesus Christ. Guest Bio: Amanda Schaefer is an author, speaker, publisher, and podcast host. No matter what vehicle she uses to share, Amanda is always telling stories. Amanda attended New York University, majoring in Dramatic Writing but was not a believer at the time. She would never have imagined using all of the things she learned there to create a Christian podcast. This endeavor, the “A Cup of Gratitude” podcast, is being listened to worldwide! It has far surpassed any of her expectations. Amanda's goal was to provide a platform for people to share their stories and, as a result, to share God's story. With no agenda other than finding the way to view lives through the lens of gratitude, she has chosen to keep this podcast as a ministry with no monetization of any kind. Hi, welcome to Write Better Now, a podcast of quick, weekly writing tips meant to help you become a better writer. We're your hosts with NYT bestselling author Carrie Jones and copyeditor extraordinaire Shaun Farrar. Thank you for joining us. Last week on our podcast we talked about theme, and we're going back there again. We know! We know! So scary. Why risk it again? We risk it for you, dear listener. Like a matyr-parent from the early 2000s, we're writing your college essays and yelling at the soccer coach and doing the work. Once again, what actually is a theme? So, the theme is the central idea of your story. According to aresearchguide.com: “A theme in a story is the major idea that the story leans or surrounds. It comments on human experience, and more often a story relates to real life situations. All stories have at least one theme. “A theme gives the general view of the story. It gives the reader the insight into how the story characters live to pursue something good, the results of conflicts and how all these choices come to pass in their lives. In a story, there can be major and minor themes. A major theme is an idea the writer keeps on repeating in his work, portraying it as the most significant idea. The minor theme is the idea that appears briefly in the story. “A theme needs to be compelling and captivating. You need to think carefully when choosing a theme for your story.” Let's go simple: It's the idea your story is about and it's good to include a verb in that idea and a noun/subject. Some writing coaches will say to never ever explicitly state your theme. Some coaches will say you should absolutely have a character state your theme early on in your story (first act) but have your main character not get it. Over on the blog writerswrite, they give examples of themes: Crime pays.Honesty is the best policy.Who dares wins.Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.Home is where the heart is.The past is a foreign country – they do things differently there. You never really know anybody.People are predictable.People with nothing to lose are dangerous.Love conquers all.Blood is thicker than water. You can choose your friends but you can't choose your family. What does not kill you makes you stranger. That site uses the Lajos Egri Theme Cheat Sheet, which is from Ljos's book: The Art of Dramatic Writing. To see that and the other three-step program, please head over to carriejonesbooks.blog because all our notes don't fit here. So sorry! Hey, thanks for listening to Write Better Now. These podcasts and more writing tips are at Carrie's website, carriejonesbooks.blog. There's also a donation button there. Even a dollar inspires a happy dance in us, so thank you for your support. The Mark B Perry Interview Mark B Perry is the writer and producer of the new Dark Shadows Reincarnation series currently in preproduction. Mark B. Perry grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia, where his childhood love of Carl Reiner's The Dick Van Dyke Show inspired him to pursue a writing career-after all, doing what Rob, Buddy, and Sally did all day sure looked like a great way to make a living. Because the University of Georgia lacked a prestigious film school at the time, Mark cobbled his own degree together from film and TV classes in the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism, supplemented by studies in play-writing, acting, directing, and cinema in the theater department. Before graduating with a bachelor's in broadcast journalism, Mark won the Claude P. Callison Award (or "Claudie" as it was known back in the day) for excellence in filmmaking by a student. After a brief sojourn writing and producing industrials for the local newspapers and a variety of companies including Southern Bell, General Motors, and Oral-B, Mark moved to Los Angeles in 1986 where he worked as an office temp by day while churning out sample feature screenplays and television scripts by night. Two years later, a chance viewing of a new series called The Wonder Years changed his trajectory forever. Mark's spec script for that top-ten show led to a freelance episode and a staff writer gig where the highlight of his first day in the room was the announcement that his spec script, "Summer Song," was to be purchased and produced as the premiere of the 1989-90 season. After racking up eighteen writing credits on The Wonder Years, a Humanitas nomination for his Thanksgiving episode, "The Ties That Bind," and his first producer title, Mark went on to write, produce, and sometimes serve as show-runner on such diverse series as Northern Exposure, Picket Fences, Moon Over Miami, Law & Order (which still sometimes gets him excused from jury duty), Party of Five, Push (to this day a sensitive subject), Time of Your Life, Pasadena, First Years, That Was Then, One Tree Hill, Windfall, and What About Brian. After helping to successfully launch the second season of ABC's Brothers & Sisters in 2007, Mark was a co-executive producer on CBS's Ghost Whisperer, then an executive producer on the first two (and arguably best) seasons of ABC's Revenge, followed by a stint as executive producer on NBC's Heartbeat. In 2018-19, Mark wrote the first season finale of Netflix's Dolly Parton's Heartstrings, "Two Doors Down," an LGBTQ-themed episode starring Academy Award-winners Melissa Leo and Ray McKinnon and directed by Wendy Stanzler. As a writer-producer on the first season on David E. Kelley's Picket Fences, Mark shared an Emmy Award for Outstanding Dramatic Series. For his "Falsies" episode of Party of Five, Mark was nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award for Best Achievement in Dramatic Writing. And for his writing and producing services on that same series, Mark shared a Golden Globe Award for Best Drama. Today I am joined by playwright Eleanor Burgess for a conversation on her hit play The Niceties. The Niceties is everywhere this season—I just saw it last week in Milwaukee, but you can also find it in other major cities across the US and in London—and it is chock full of things to discuss. For anyone new to Burgess and her work, she grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts, studied history at Yale College, and has her M.F.A in Dramatic Writing from NYU. Her other plays include Chill, Start Down, These Dying Generations, and Mocha, and she is also writing for HBO's upcoming Perry Mason. But today we'll be talking about The Niceties, and if you don't know the play, that's okay. We won't really be talking about the play itself (which is better left unspoiled anyway), but about the subjects it covers, like race, history, and American progress—as well as the tremendous uncertainty that exists in any conversation on deep moral subjects like these. The Niceties tells a story about a white history professor meeting with an African American student at an unnamed prestigious university. As the professor challenges the conclusions of a paper the student has written, the women are soon swept up in an intense debate rooted in their vastly different perspectives on American history. I won't give away more about it than that, but I will say that it is such an accessible, yet excitingly intellectual play that I actually found it a bit trickier than usual to form interview questions on it. It's not that doesn't invite questions, but rather, it poses so many, and digs so directly into them, it was hard to know to begin without simply summarizing much of the play in the process. What we ended up with was a discussion focused on questions more than answers, and the importance of humility and understanding in a culture that so often prioritizes the loudest, most uncompromising voices. If you're feeling the fatigue of living in a country with a very polarized and often combative political climate, I think Burgess's openness and hope for more understanding will resonate with you. Is incremental progress something to celebrate or reject? Is the story of America one of great achievements or great injustices? And for a new parent like Burgess, how do you raise a child in such a morally complex world? We don't have all the answers, but Burgess serves as an excellent guide through these conundrums of American life.
