Lessons from Leeds and Amsterdam on childhood obesity

The Food Programme

Amsterdam and Leeds are two of the only places in the world to have cut rates of childhood obesity — and they've not done it by focussing just on diet. Sheila Dillon finds out how these two locally-based policies worked, and why the political circumstances around them were just as important as the policies themselves. She speaks to parents, academics, policy experts and public health leaders to find out what we can learn from these two remarkable interventions. In Leeds, the local authority has prioritised health in the early years over the last 20 years, and part of that is working with the charity HENRY (Health, Exercise and Nutrition for the Really Young). HENRY has trained council staff to deliver courses helping parents to teach their kids healthy eating right from the start. In 2019 Leeds made national headlines becoming the first city in the UK to see a small, but significant drop in childhood obesity, and a bigger drop of 10% in the most deprived areas. The data shows that overall between 2009 and 2017 obesity dropped from 9.4% to 8.8% in four-to-five year olds, while levels remained unchanged in similar cities. When it comes to improving children's health, Amsterdam's Healthy Weight Program attracted a lot of interest from around the world, becoming the shining example of what can be done to tackle high levels of obesity though action on a city-level. The Program's main principle was ‘the healthy choice should be the easy choice', aiming to reduce childhood obesity through healthy food and drink, exercise and better quality sleep. From 2012 to 2015 the percentage of children who were overweight or obese went down 12%, from 21% to 18.5%, with the biggest fall amongst the lowest socio-economic groups. In the programme we hear from: Alice Wiseman, Joint Director of Public Health for Gateshead and Newcastle, and Vice President of The Association of Directors of Public Health; Dr Dolly Van Tulleken, policy consultant and visiting researcher at the MCR Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge; Jaap Seidell, Professor of Nutrition and Health at The Free University in Amsterdam; and Kim Roberts, Chief Executive of the HENRY charity.Presented by Sheila Dillon and produced by Sophie Anton for BBC Audio in Bristol

Kevin Dedner is co-founder and CEO of Henry Health. Henry Health is a digital community that provides self-care support and culturally sensitive teletherapy.  Henry Health's initial target audience is black men who have the lowest life expectancy of any population. In fact, the stated goal of Henry Health is to increase the life expectancy of black men by ten years within the next twenty-five years.  Kevin has over 15 years of experience in public health (he also has a Masters in Public Health degree) -  He’s worked on a variety of issues including childhood obesity, HIV/AIDS, and tobacco control. He has worked with numerous public health entities including the nation’s largest public health foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. You can connect with Kevin here: LinkedIn, Henry Health Website, Henry Health on Twitter, Kevin on Twitter Links mentioned in the show: Kevin’s Blog Post: Bernard Tyson was our leader, Why do Black Men die so soon? Dr. James Sherman’s 1994 Report: John Henryism and The Health of African-Americans Kevin’s Blog: We All Deserve to Have Our Culture Honored, Especially in Therapy Startup Health: Meet the Health Transformer Addressing Racial Disparities in COVID-19   HERE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT: Kevin Dedner is an expert in public health and has been a public health advocate for many years. He has worked on all of the major public health issues over the last decade from HIV to childhood obesity and tobacco control.  Kevin shares his own experience with mental health. He talks about how mental exhaustion led to depression and a search for help via therapy. He worked closely with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to address health disparities. In that space Kevin became keenly aware of black men having the lowest life expectancy of any population. He talks about how in all of his career he never heard anyone talking about this even though the data has existed for quite a while.  The deeper he looked he found a correlation between mental health and un-managed stress. Untreated mental health is a driver for chronic disease and premature death. After dealing with his own depression and realizing it was stress that really drove him into that depression, he wanted to do something about it and found his way to helping found Henry Health to help black men with their mental health. We talked extensively about how we get more black men to focus on their mental health, and how we get society to focus on this problem. Kevin talks about how we need to teach people how to use tools like meditation, breathing techniques, etc. to manage our stress and mental health. Kevin talks about Dr. Sherman’s research that shows that black men are living life at a higher sense of awareness. Many times, people are unconscious of this. This causes blood to move through our veins faster, strains organs, weakens immune systems and more.  This is why we must solve the mental health issue in order to extend the life expectancy of black men. We talked about how we can get more black men to become aware of their need for help with their mental health, increase their access to care, and providing access to services and content that help black men improve their mental well-being. Kevin explains that while mental health products are exploding on the market, there are very few, if any, culturally sensitive offerings for populations such as black men, or the LGBTQ community. Kevin talks about where Henry Health is in their business life cycle as a seed stage startup, what traction they have had so far, and their strategy for bringing their solution to market. Kevin explains that a lot of people seek culturally competent solutions for mental health regardless of being apart of a certain population or not. For something to become a public health issue, we have to have the political leadership pointing government resources at the problem. We believe that mental health will be the public health issue of the next decade.  We do need to see political will and change though, for this to happen.   Connect with the Stigma Podcast in the following ways: Patreon account, Website, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Email Connect with host Stephen Hays here: Stephen Hays Personal Website, Twitter, LinkedIn, What If Ventures (Mental Health Venture Fund)

African American men have the lowest life expectancy of any group...67 years of age. This number is in stark contrast to their white counterparts who see life spans into the early 80s on average.Dr. Sherman James described this impact as "John Henryism" based on the folktale of steel driver John Henry. As the story goes, John was a black man and the best in the land at driving steel into mountainsides - necessary for the building of railroad tunnels. He was challenged to race a machine - a steam-driven hammer. He defeated the machine, and then had a heart attack and died. Dr. James saw this as a metaphor for the life of the American black man. Basically: work at full capacity ALL THE TIME, with all the extra stresses and striving, which results in a shorter life.So with this as a backdrop, Kevin undertook his own personal journey in mental health. His epiphany from the experience: finding a provider is a big challenge AND cultural context of your therapy matters. Henry Health (named for John Henry) was born in 2018. The company is building a digital platform that provides culturally sensitive teletherapy services. Their first community is, as you would expect, black men. Hello listeners! Welcome back to another episode of Tech Forward. This week, I hope you'll enjoy the rebroadcast of my conversation with Kevin Dedner, Founder and CEO of Henry Health. Henry Health's mobile app provides self-care and mental health support through culturally sensitive teletherapy, serving the population with the lowest life expectancy in the U.S. — black men. Kevin is an experienced public health leader, and through Henry Health, he is committed to leveraging the power of technology to add 10 years to the life expectancy of black men in the next 25 years by focusing on their emotional and mental health. Today on the show, Kevin will be sharing with us some of the challenges black men face when receiving mental health support, and how his product helps address that need. “There is a weight,” Kevin says, “a stress associated just with being a black man.” Unaddressed, that stress in combination with untreated mental health issues plays a significant role in the low life expectancy of black men in the U.S. While they do seek solutions, black men face considerable hurdles in receiving culturally competent mental health care. Behind Henry Health is Kevin’s vision of a trusted source for providing mental health services and self care support for black men. At first, Kevin approached this issue from an academic angle, drawing on his experience working in public health and researching the social determinants of health. Along the way, however, he had his own experience with depression, through which he discovered “that my suffering could be helpful to others.” Kevin’s first hand experience with depression has been crucial in the development of a product that truly addresses the emotional and mental health needs of black men in the U.S. In fact, he brings many facets of both his personal and his professional life to his work with Henry Health, because he sees his entrepreneurship journey as a mirror of life. “My entire career has prepared me for the work I’m doing now. But when I first started to think about what I could do to address the mental health needs of black men, I met a lot of resistance. As an entrepreneur, you know this happens, and you’re more in tune with it. If you can push through that initial resistance, you will find what you need to advance your idea.” Through Henry Health, users have access to teletherapy with professionals who have undergone training to understand the unique experiences of black men in America. They also have the option to participate in moderated groups where they can discuss issues related to stress in the workplace, single parenting, relationship issues, and self care. Also offered within the app are daily motivational messages from lecturer and researcher Dr. Dennis Kimbro. When it comes to utilizing social media in a positive way, “sharing these messages and affirmations really does play a tremendous role in people’s current condition and mental state.” Kevin, thank you so much for coming onto the show this week to share the important work you’re doing through Henry Health with our listeners. The Awesome Black Dad's Show

Happy New Years good people    We made it to another year and I'm truly thankful for the blessing and lesson from 2018. I am sincerely grateful for all of you. Thank you for the feedback and continued support you are responsible for the growth of this show and more importantly my growth as well.    Now I know we've been slacking on the content for the month of December but it's not without good reason.  For 2019 we wanted to do things a little different. Since the inception of the awesome black Dads Show we have largely interviewed fathers for their authentic stories about their challenges and successes in fatherhood. Don't worry, we are not getting rid of that. However we are going to be adding more content that's geared toward inspiring Dads to execute on becoming the best version of themselves.    So here's how we plan to do that:   1st. According to Henry Health a company whose goal is to make access to mental healthcare easy and convenient, removing all barriers to seeking treatment the 5 stressors for black men are:    Money & finances Race & Racsim  Jobs & career Health & Illness Relationships   We have created themed months where our conversations will be rooted in specific topics connected but not limited to those 5 stressors.  I fundamentally believe that our growth and development as better fathers is hidden in the discussions and stories based on these 5 things. In these conversations you will still get the raw stories but you will get more tips and tools that will help you become More awesome.    2nd. In an effort to engage more with you; I will begin each month with a solo opinion episode dealing with either current events, social issues, and topics relating to the theme months. After the release of the opinion episode I would like to give a listener the opportunity to be on the show to respond or debate my opinion or position.  To be considered please send an email to info@awesomeblackdads.com with a short reaction to the opinion and why you agree or disagree.  I will review each response and choose a listener to be on the show to have an awesome debate.     Lastly, Because growth doesn't happen without action we are kicking off our monthly awesome challenges today. Join the challenges to become better Physically, Intellectually, Emotionally, and Spiritually. I hope to see all of you join us on the journey.  Go to awesomeblackdads.com/challenge to learn more and join.    I'm looking forward to an awesome 2019. If you haven't already follow us on Facebook and Instagram at awesome black dads we would also appreciate an iTunes review, it will not only help us get better but it helps us move up the charts.    Thanks for listening and May your 2019 be better than what expect.
