The legal industry is facing its “Netflix vs. Blockbuster” moment. AI, automation, and alternative legal service providers (ALSPs) are rapidly reshaping how legal services are delivered, and the biggest question is: Who will adapt—and who will be left behind? Roger Pilc leads a $600M+ division at Epiq, bringing experience from McKinsey, Booz Allen, CA Technologies, and Pitney Bowes. With insights from Satya Nadella's vision on AI, Clayton Christensen's The Innovator's Dilemma, and leadership lessons from Peter Drucker, Adam Grant(Author of Think Again), and Daniel Pink(Author of Drive), Roger explains how ALSPs are positioned to disrupt legal in ways law firms and Big Four consultancies cannot. In this episode, we explore how Legal Service Management mirrors IT's digital transformation, why Zach Posner at TLTF is betting on AI-driven legal platforms, and how Nicole Giantonio and the team at Epiq are investing in tech that's changing legal service delivery. Key Takeaways You Can Use Today: Legal is facing a “Simultaneous Equation Problem.” GCs must manage rising litigation, regulatory complexity, and shrinking budgets—but traditional models no longer work. AI & ALSPs Are Changing Everything. Like Netflix disrupting Blockbuster, AI-powered legal service models are creating massive efficiencies for corporate legal teams. The 30% Rule: Leadership is Talent Spotting. Echoing Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Jack Welch, Roger spends 30% of his time recruiting and developing top talent—a critical strategy for legal leaders.

Trends, challenges and opportunities re new ventures and fundingKay Koplovitz is the founder and former Chairman & CEO of USA Networks, the SyFy Channel and USA Networks International, a multi-billion-dollar cable program company. Ms. Koplovitz ran the network for 21 years before stepping down in 1998, at which time it was sold for $4.5 billion. She is the visionary who created the business model for cable networks by introducing the concept of two revenue streams: licensing and advertising, adopted worldwide. It all started with her insatiable curiosity about satellite communications, a concept she first heard from author Arthur C Clark and his work on geosynchronous orbiting satellites. It was the introduction of satellite distribution into the cable industry that launched an industry. In 1998, then-President Clinton appointed Kay to chair the bipartisan National Women's Business Council (NWBC). Her research found that $104 billion in venture capital went over the transom, but only 1.7 percent went to women. VCs in Silicon Valley told Kay they had never seen any women come to pitch them. It was time to open the door to VC capital and bring women in. By 2000, Kay was compelled to launch Springboard Enterprises, which she co-founded as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) accelerator that propels women-led companies in technology and life sciences to raise capital, now powered by a community of over 5,000 industry specific experts. They lift them to scale and sustainability with access to capital, business partnerships and an entrusted global community. In 2014, Ms. Koplovitz co-founded the New York Fashion Tech Lab (NYFTL.com), bringing promising technology companies in collaboration with the fashion and consumer retail industry. Today they are leading Ai technology integration in Retail. In its 25 th anniversary year, Kay continues as Chairman of Springboard Enterprises, where, under her leadership, the organization's mission is to present and connect essential resources to over 930+ Springboard entrepreneurs. The measure of its success is in the results. A strong 25-year track record validated the value of Springboard Enterprises' alumnae, totaling $61 Billion in value since its launch, with 237 exits to strategic acquirers and 28 IPOs.  In 2016, Ms. Koplovitz co-founded Springboard Growth Capital to bring growth-stage investments to women-led companies, building iconic brands with the digital consumer in mind and a path to profitability in sight. She previously served on corporate boards of CA Technologies, Time Inc., Liz Claiborne, Kate Spade, ION Media Networks, Oracle, Instinet, Nabisco, General Re, and over 25 years as trustee on the nonprofit boards of The Paley Center for Media and the International Tennis Hall of Fame.#podcast #AFewThingsPodcast

Clemente Cohen's finance career began in the early 1990s inside the Munich offices of Silicon Graphics, approximately 6,500 miles from the Silicon Valley company's headquarters and 7,500 miles from his birthplace in Argentina. This transcontinental start marked the beginning of a career defined by global problem solving , adaptability and generous helpings of M&A experience. Cohen, who grew up in Germany after moving from Argentina, problem solving perspective to his role. Joining Silicon Graphics as an accountant, Cohen tells us he was able to quickly demonstrate to others a innate curiosity and willingness to go the extra mile. Frequently, his contributions went beyond traditional accounting, delving into financial analysis and supporting the company's rapid growth. This foundational experience in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment would shape Cohen's understanding of finance operations on a global scale. Over the next decade, Cohen's career with Silicon Graphics expanded across continents. He held roles in Germany, the UK, and eventually became the International CFO, overseeing finance and business operations outside the United States. After a dozen years with Silicon Graphics, Cohen joined the London Office of CA Technologies , where Cohen tell us he was able to play a pivotal role in M&A activities and helped drive the company's transition from hardware to software. After spending much of his career at large, global companies, Cohen made a deliberate decision to pursue CFO opportunities at smaller, private equity-backed firms. This shift allowed him to be more hands-on, driving business transformation and growth in a more direct way. The move was not without hesitation, as smaller companies often come with greater challenges and fewer resources. However, Cohen embraced the opportunity to apply his extensive experience in a more entrepreneurial setting.

Small Biz Matters: People, Policy, Purpose ~ Episode #236 Broadcast date: 4 June 2024 Host: Alexi Boyd, Small Business Advocate & Policy Advisor Guests: Roger Gregg, Sabby Gill, Aly Garrett We all know that data, in the wrong hands can be destructive. But we also know the power of data to make us more efficient, save us time and the potential to make us better advisors and business owners. There's a tug of war going on right now. As small businesses, advisors and Fintech companies, how do we work together to simultaneously embrace data's potential and control its misuse? How do we take into account the needs of businesses and consumers and the advisors in the middle? And who owns the data anyway? In today's panel we unpacked all this and more including AI's impact on small businesses and software development and what Australian policy makers can learn from the rest of the world to resolve the issues around data privacy. We're lucky to have such an esteemed group of guests. Our expert panel consists of leaders in the fields of accounting and small business, Fintech Founders and renowned international software, data and AI policy experts. Roger Gregg - Hospitality leader and founder of software companies like LightYear Sabby Gill - CEO of Dext and Chair of the international Digital Leaders professional network, Aly Garrett FCA - All In Advisory Architect and Accounting Adventures Podcast host. This podcast was recorded back in 2023 at the Xero Mastermind Community Precon and co-hosted in collaboration with Heather Smith, Host of Accounting Apps podcast and international speaker on AccountTech. PEOPLE –  - How should or could advisors embrace AI to make their practices run more efficiently (yes we do include some good practical examples). What is the reality and do small businesses in different industries even have the time to implement AI and what happens to them if they get left behind? POLICY -   Potentially, we could be looking at more regulations placed on accountants and bookkeepers as government knee-jerk-reacts to community concerns. What will be the impact on advisors and clients if regulations tighten in data privacy with the number and severity of cyber attacks? PURPOSE -   The impact of CDR consumer data rights could have been disastrous for advisors and their clients; luckily we dodged a bullet here in Australia but it's a great example of how too much restriction can strangle innovation. From the perspective of those who rely heavily on data to function (the advisors and their clients) what would happen? Roger Gregg is a seasoned professional with a diverse background in management accounting, manufacturing, retail, fintech and hospitality. Born in Northern Ireland, prior to moving to Australia, Roger was involved in the manufacturing sector in Belfast, and was Chairman of the Northern Ireland Furniture Group. Then when he moved to Australia in 2007, Roger was recruited to be Director of Operations for Keystone Hospitality Group, taking the group to win the prestigious Australian Group Operator of the Year award in 2008, 2009 and 2010.  It was there that he saw (and felt) the need for Accounts Payable automation and in 2011 he co-founded the Accounts Payable tech start-up invitbox with his brother Chris.  Despite neither of them having any tech experience, invitbox was awarded Xero's Emerging App of the Year for Australia in 2013, just prior to being acquired by Intuit in 2014.  Building upon their previous success they founded Lightyear in 2018 to continue their mission of solving Accounts Payable headaches for SMEs. The company operates both domestically and internationally, with a staff of 60 offices in Belfast and Sydney, servicing 6,000 businesses across 22 countries. In addition to Lightyear, Roger is involved in a number of hospitality businesses as a partner in House Made Hospitality, as well as helping Bondi Brewing Company take it to the big guys. Aly Garrett FCA is a multi-award winning fellow chartered accountant, tax agent and podcast host (check out Aly & Andrew's All Aussie Accounting Adventures) who founded All In Advisory Pty Ltd in 2018. All In has won Boutique Firm and Start up Firm of the Year at Accountants Daily and are Xero Cloud Champions of the Year. Aly has worked in the accounting industry for 30 years, with big, small, traditional and innovative firms and everything in between and has helped many of them work through their digital journeys.  She knows the challenges and opportunities this can present and likes to use her experience to bring positive change in our accounting and bookkeeping communities. Sabby Gill was appointed CEO of Dext in October 2022 and brings more than 35years' experience in the technology sector, spanning sales, operations, development, support and customer service.  He has spent his career supporting businesses of all sizes with technology that looks to unlock their potential—both at home and in international markets. Prior to Dext, Sabby was CEO of Thomas International, which is a leading talent assessment and psychometric provider.  Other past roles also included UK & Ireland Managing Director of Sage, in addition to senior executive leadership roles at Epicor, IGT, HP, CA Technologies, Oracle, PeopleSoft and Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC).Sabby currently is a member of the UK's Digital Economy Council with Secretary of State, and the Chair of Digital Leaders Advisory Board, which has over 180,000 members across the UK. Tracy is the former Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) turned Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) at Intellimize where she brings a holistic perspective and approach to the organization to drive end-to-end revenue generating strategies.  Prior to Intellimize, she has led teams at Fountain, SparkPost, CA Technologies, Cisco, and TiVo.  Tracy has 20+ years' experience helping GTM teams drive brand awareness along sustainable and scalable revenue streams. She has served on the board of Women for WineSense, is an active member of CHIEF, and co-founded a non-profit for lung cancer, for which she received a Bay Area Jefferson Award.  Tracy has also been an adjunct professor in digital marketing at UC Berkeley and San Francisco State University and has authored a book on digital marketing. In the fifth installment of Revenue Rehab's My Journey series, on the couch in this week's episode, Brandi and Tracy tackle My Journey with Tracy Sestili: Going from CMO to CRO Bullet Points of Key Topics + Chapter Markers: Topic #1 Going Wide and Varied or Going Deep [07:10] Tracy describes a key conversation that guided some of her decisions on next steps for her career while she was at TiVo; “I went to lunch with the CMO there and she said, ‘What do you want to do with your career?... your resume is very deep. And you know, you can go wide and be very varied. Or you can go deep in one area and sort of make that your career path. Have you thought about what you want to do?'” Topic #2 Finding Your Career Path: Taking Time for Reflection [15:30] “I think it's hard for people to take a break, and sit back and consider that it does take, literally taking time off,” Tracy says.  “I always recommend to people, when you kind of feel like you're burned out, maybe they'll take a staycation or something and try to decompress and really give it some thought about what you want to do.” Topic #3 The Journey from CMO to CRO [25:05] “It is not something that I sought out, it kind of fell in my lap,” Tracy reflects.  Built off an existing solid relationship with the CEO, who offered her the position, she considered that rapport as well as the company culture when she finally decided to make that move. “I also really love working for my CEO, he's just the kindest human and he's a very good thought partner. And I think that that's important if you're going to make that transition, to have a good relationship with your CEO and have a good relationship with finance. Because that, that's all that the CRO does, right? And those are the reasons why I said yes.”   So, What's the One Thing You Can Do Today? Tracy's ‘One Thing', when it comes to evaluating making the transition from CMO to CRO, “I think you need to get in the trenches with sales,” she says, “and see if you can shadow a salesperson from like, start to finish to really determine first, if that's something that you want to do, right? And then from there…seeing if you really understand the bigger picture of what's happening across the org from a data perspective, like, do you have insight to understand that? To me, those are the two things that I think would really help you decide if you want to do it.” Buzzword Banishment: Tracy's Buzzword to Banish is ‘attribution.  “I think now that I've gone from CMO to CRO it drives me even more crazy,” Tracy says, “[attribution] just really trips up marketers as a whole to try to figure out who gets credit for what, it's exhausting you know, if it's working, it's working and there's no need to fight over credit in my opinion.” Links: Get in touch with Tracy Sestili on: LinkedIn Twitter Intellimize e-Book: Filling in the blanks of your ABM program Subscribe, listen, and rate/review Revenue Rehab Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts , Amazon Music, or iHeart Radio and find more episodes on our website RevenueRehab.live

Other mass layoffs recently included Intel, Wish and LinkedIn in the San Francisco Bay area. At the beginning of September, Rapid7 announced a restructuring plan following disappointing second-quarter results, resulting in the layoffs of about 18% of the company's workforce. Similarly, AppSec firm Snyk laid off 128 people in April. Cloud security vendor Zscaler announced layoffs after what it called a rough fiscal second quarter. Software tools giant Atlassian laid off 5% of its workforce as it “shifted priorities.”    ----   Our upcoming events: AUSTIN TX – MASTERMIND LIVE (March 28-29th) http://bit.ly/kernanmastermind https://kernanconsulting-mastermind.mykajabi.com/mastermind-event Use “EARLYBIRD” as the coupon code to save $200! OPENING QUOTE:“That last mile is about standing there with the CEO, with the Chief Marketing Officer, with the product people that are on stage, and saying how can we take this script that we have right now, these pieces of content, and just create a bigger bond with the audience over those things.”SUMMARY:Chris Janese is the CEO and head of client strategy at The Green Room, an extraordinary event production agency with roots in the entertainment industry.

Executives are typically optimistic and excited about their fledgling program, riding the high of their early wins. And then something emerges and threatens that momentum. But like maintaining good health, the companies that stay the course learn to anticipate their customers' needs, allowing them to deepen relationships and deliver bigger financial results in the long term. That's what happened at CA Technologies. In this episode, I continue my conversation with Dayton Semerjian. What do you call the space between you and your customer? According to Dayton Semerjian, that's where you'll find the true value of a customer relationship. Dayton is general manager of global customer success and support at the IT services firm CA Technologies.  CA's customers tend to be large companies, and the decision to buy its software and services is usually made by big groups of people armed with heavy analysis. Customer relationships can be very complex, involving many internal teams that handle sales, implementation and tech support. It's not that uncommon for some customers to feel like they've fallen through the cracks in situations like these. In this episode, Dayton shares what it takes to earn promoters in complex client relationships. Learn more: Do Your B2B Customers Promote Your Business?
