Hello, fabulous fashion friends! Happy FRI-YAYYYYYY!! Welcome back to the Fashion Crimes Podcast, your weekly dose of style, inspiration, and all things fashion. Featuring your favorite personal stylist and the hostess with the mostest, Holly Katz, we are here to show you how to look chic without breaking the bank.   Wanna see us in the flesh? Check out our YouTube channel for the video of this episode!   This week, we're diving into a super fun topic – How to Mix High and Low End Pieces like a pro! We are about to give you all the secrets on how to elevate your wardrobe with a perfect blend of luxury AND affordable items.   Trust us, by the end of this episode, you'll know exactly how to rock designer accessories with budget-friendly staples. So grab your favorite earphones, turn up the volume, and let's gooooooo!   Outline of Key Topics Discussed:   1. Why Mixing High and Low Works o Create a balanced, effortlessly chic look that reflects your unique style. o Moderation is key. You don't need to wear all high-end or all low-end pieces. o The magic of blending designer pieces with more affordable finds to achieve that high-low vibe.   2. Identifying High-End vs. Low-End Pieces o High-end items: Designer accessories (bags, shoes, jewelry) and classic investment pieces. o Low-end items: Budget-friendly but stylish basics like tees, denim, and everyday items that don't need to break the bank.   3. High-End Accessories: The Key to Elevating Any Outfit o By spending your hard-earned dollars on high-end designer accessories, these are the staples that support and elevate any outfit. o Designer pieces should be used to create a polished, sophisticated look that will "level up" your lower-end pieces. o Example: Pair a $5 vintage baseball hat with a designer handbag and shoes for the ultimate high-low combo.   4. Low-End Staples: The Foundation of a Flexible Wardrobe o Find affordable yet stylish options like Levi's jeans, vintage tees, or a well-cut jacket that won't drain your wallet. o HOT TIP!  Mixing costume with your real jewelry makes all of your jewelry look more refined.  o Example: A vintage rock tee layered with a blazer, paired with designer shoes with an affordable statement earring: priceless!   5. Where to Shop for the Best High-Low Mix o Check out designer second-hand marketplaces like The RealReal or local consignment shops in your area for amazing finds. o Vintage stores and online sites like ThredUp can carry high-quality, less expensive options. o Shop strategically for sales or shop off-season to make sure you're investing in pieces that will last.   6. When to Splurge o Invest in timeless pieces that hold their value over time, like a designer handbag or quality jackets and scarves. o Always shop with fit and quality in mind—don't just buy for the label. o Think about longevity and versatility when selecting high-end pieces to mix into your wardrobe.   Final Words: Mixing high and low-end pieces is not only fun, but it's a savvy way to build a wardrobe that looks unexpected, sophisticated, and totally unique. Remember, fashion is about creating a look that feels true to YOU—whether it's from a luxury designer or a thrift store gem, mix it up and make it yours. And as always, we are here to help guide you through the process. Don't worry. This post is not about how to use cleaning products, of which I have only the most basic knowledge—that is, not much—but rather about keeping my house free of clutter. I don't know if it happens to you, but even though I live alone and am rather careful and tidy, I always end up with a pile of stuff that seems to grow organically. Suddenly, the room is full of clutter. I just don't know how it happened! The other day, in a spurt of energy, I decided to walk through my house and see what was happening behind all these closed doors. I started to clean out my library, which is the room I practically live in. It is my lair. I emptied drawers that I hadn't opened since moving in a few years ago—at the time, I just wanted to put them away. I found all sorts of photos, albums, and mementos from a past life. I found stationery with different addresses and vestiges of a company I owned many years ago. Should I throw it all out and forget about it, or put it in a bigger box and stuff it all in an unused closet? That is the question. I found clothes I hadn't worn in five years when I opened storage closets. They fit, are in good condition, and are of good quality, but will I ever wear them again? Probably not. It's time to get rid of them. I also tidied up the china closet. And ditto, ditto. I had forgotten I owned plates and table accessories that I used for photo shoots or a specific event, plates and table accessories that no longer fit my aesthetics, and odds and ends of unmatched serving pieces with chipped bits and broken handles. Why did I ever return something worthless to the cupboard? I don't know. This year is the Chinese year of the snake, and it is all about rebirth—getting rid of the old skin and making a new one. It is about surrendering what no longer serves you and clearing the path for a lighter, brighter future. So, it seems natural to go through this cleaning exercise. I have sent clothes to THREDUP. They accept anything labeled and clean. It takes a bit to process the bags, but you eventually get a small check. Plates and kitchen things that are in good condition I have taken to Goodwill. I have thrown out paperwork and photos. Frankly, out of sight is out of mind, and I am thrilled to have space for all sorts of new good things. Spring cleaning is not only about taking out the duster and cleaning the library shelves but about reorganizing and lighting up, making room for future projects, opening cupboards, and allowing light and air to come into my life. And with this, I leave you.Sincerely, The Serial Hostess Thank you for subscribing. Leave a comment or share this episode.

Hello and welcome back to Fashion and Founders The podcast. My name is Victoria Smith and this week I'm joined with Claire Illmer, the Co-Founder and CEO of Future Reference.Claire's experience before founding Future Reference includes working at Google for five years, at YouTube in search and discovery, and at ThredUp in search and discovery as well. She is now building a fashion tech company revolutionizing how we sell our clothes. Future Reference is a digital wardrobe and a cross listing platform. Their software allows you to digitize your wardrobe by just connecting your email as they pull your online receipts. Not only that, but they make the resale listings for you. So you just click on the product in your closet that you decide to sell and they cross list it to their partners like Depop, eBay, Poshmark, etc. They are solving a problem I think so many people have faced when trying to sell their clothes. Also right now, while you're looking at your wardrobe on Future Reference, you can go check out your wardrobe wrapped. So basically Spotify wrapped, but for the items in your closet. They have so many data points on your wardrobe from resale value, amount spent per item, color palette, and so much more.I am loving using future reference. I think it's just at the beginning of all the potential that they have and it is so exciting. I can't wait to see all of their success. I'll let Claire share more. In this Fast Five Short we discuss how JD Sports has recently launched a new pre-owned shoe shopping platform called Rejd, aiming to provide consumers with significant discounts on gently used footwear. This initiative positions JD Sports uniquely in the aftermarket space as one of the few retail-owned platforms, rather than being brand-led. While the concept has potential, concerns arise about profitability, as similar resale platforms have struggled to maintain sustainable business models. The discussion highlights the challenges of managing inventory and logistics in the resale market, questioning how JD Sports can ensure financial success in this competitive landscape. Ultimately, the hosts recognize JD Sports' innovative approaches and their growing presence in the U.S. retail market, suggesting that they are a brand to watch as they navigate this evolving space. The launch of Rejd by JD Sports signifies a transformative step toward sustainable retail, providing consumers with an opportunity to buy pre-owned shoes at attractive prices. This initiative distinguishes JD Sports from other retailers, as it is one of the few to embrace an aftermarket platform not directly tied to a specific sneaker brand. Through Rejd, JD Sports aims to offer a wide variety of footwear options, ranging from casual sandals to high-performance shoes, ensuring that they cater to diverse consumer needs. Each product undergoes a thorough inspection and cleaning process, along with a grading system that informs buyers about the shoe's condition, enhancing the shopping experience and building trust in the quality of pre-owned items. The discussion explores both the excitement and the apprehensions surrounding JD Sports' new venture. Speaker B shares insights on the potential advantages, particularly JD's access to data from original shoe purchases, which could streamline the resale process and reduce waste by reintroducing products into the market. However, the conversation also addresses the precarious nature of profitability in the resale sector, citing challenges faced by platforms like ThredUp and Depop. The speakers delve into the economics of inventory management, questioning whether JD Sports can maintain a profitable balance while holding stock and managing returns. This tension reflects broader issues within the resale industry, as companies grapple with the implications of sustainability versus financial viability. As the episode unfolds, it becomes evident that JD Sports is not just testing the waters; they are making bold moves in the retail space. The speakers acknowledge the need for JD to remain operationally vigilant as they innovate and expand their offerings. With a proactive leadership team and a commitment to exploring new retail strategies, JD Sports stands at the forefront of potential change in the footwear market. Their willingness to experiment with new concepts like Rejd could position them as leaders in a sector that demands creativity and adaptability, fostering a retail environment that embraces both sustainability and profitability. Takeaways: JD Sports launched Rejd, a platform for pre-owned shoes at discounted prices. Rejd stands out as a retailer-owned resale platform, unlike typical sneaker brand outlets. All shoes on Rejd undergo inspection and cleaning, ensuring quality for buyers. There's concern about profitability for JD Sports' Rejd amidst struggles in resale markets. The model involves managing returned products, raising questions about long-term financial viability. JD Sports is taking innovative approaches in retail, aiming to differentiate itself in the market. Online resale may be a hot retail buzzword now, but ThredUp has been around for over a decade building out its business. This week on the Modern Retail Podcast, ThredUp CEO and co-founder James Reinhart spoke about rising demand for resale and how the platform has expanded its offerings. Not only does ThredUp have its own marketplace business, but the company has been building out its resale-as-a-service offering, allowing brands to use its infrastructure to create their own consignment programs. "In some ways, I describe us as really the infrastructure and backbone of how resale works on the internet," Reinhart said. Compared to some of the recent fast-fashion upstarts, ThredUp is an older player. The company was founded in 2009, and went public in 2021. Still, ThredUp has been able to stay current with recent business movements. The rise of Shein and Temu -- as well as the backlash to their fast-fashion value-focused offerings -- has given ThredUp some helpful tailwinds, for example. "It's easy to have a boogeyman," Reinhart said. Reinhart also said that resale as an industry should be treated like other nascent technologies contributing to a greater good, like electric vehicles and solar energy. As such, he's calling for more government assistance as companies try to figure out ways to build new sustainability-focused technology. "I'm a big believer that government has a role to play in bridging the economic and innovation gap that it takes to develop some of these new technologies," he said.

In this episode of The Eric Ries Show, I talk with James Reinhart, founder of the second-hand resale platform ThredUp. A history major in college, James started his career as a teacher. That might not seem like it has much to do with fashion, but, as he explains, his early education and experiences actually led him not only to be a dual degree student at Harvard's Business and Kennedy schools, but to a long-term view of ThredUp's power to effect real change.  We get into the reasons why having a harder mission can be counterintuitively easier and why, as he says, “intrinsically good businesses are good for bottom lines and good for the world.” Not only did ThredUp generate 80 million dollars in revenue in the first quarter of 2024, but James has an uncanny track record of being able to accurately predict what's going to happen ten years ahead.  Those details alone should be more than enough to pull you in, but they're just a fraction of what we talked about. I hope you'll enjoy this conversation with the founder whose mission is to inspire the world to think secondhand first.  • What it was like to be an entrepreneur at Harvard Business School before the days when everyone was doing it • How his education background fed into his business acumen • The value of investors who believe in you • The advantages of having a mission that all your stakeholders are passionate about • His experience going public and advice for founders • Why he built a company culture around humane principles based on employee feedback • The change he's working towards and believes is possible • And so much more — Brought to you by: Mercury – The art of simplified finances. Our special guest this week is James Reinhart the pioneering CEO of ThredUp, the fast-growing online consignment and thrift store. We learn about James' fascinating journey from teacher to entrepreneur and how his passion drives one of the most successful purpose-driven retail brands. We go deep on the drivers of the re-commerce market, how ThredUp differentiates itself, and the implications of a shift from hyper-growth to more sustainable profitability. We also unpack ThredUp's insight packed annual "Resale Report."As usual, we kick things off with the most important retail news, dissecting Shein's "charm offensive" and how Hims & Hers is exploiting a loophole to pursue GLP-1 market opportunities. Then it's on to the most interesting earnings reports from last week, which include another weak quarter from Target, very strong progress at Marks & Spencer, a bit of preliminary optimism on Macy's new strategy, and yet another solid quarter from TJX.  About JamesJames Reinhart is the CEO and cofounder of ThredUp, one of the largest online resale platforms for apparel, shoes, and accessories. By making it easy to buy and sell secondhand, ThredUp is changing the way people shop and ushering in a more sustainable future for fashion. James' passion for circularity and the role that education plays in our communities is what drives his vision of reducing the fashion industry's negative impact on the planet. These values are reflected in his work prior to ThredUp, in which he helped develop one of the nation's premier public schools, Pacific Collegiate School. James is a graduate of the Harvard Business School and the Harvard Kennedy School where he earned a joint degree in public policy and business.
