*Just a reminder, we're back after a long summer sabbatical full of changes, including moving a couple of our kids to college and one of our families moving out of Alaska (listen to the intro to episode 314 for more details)! The episodes you'll be hearing over the next several weeks were recorded in the spring, so some of the references might be outdated but the messages are all extremely relevant. Enjoy!* This week's guest on the podcast is no stranger to brokenness, but her ministry hinges on finding beauty not only in spite of it, but within the broken places of life.
This Mother's Day let's all be thankful our parent did not overshare our childhood details online. In the early 2000's we had Mom Blogs, typically with online journal style blogs sharing recipes, shopping insights, and often their thoughts and feelings on life and parenting. In 2023 the we have Mommy Vlogger (vlog, like video blog), now equipped with an affiliate codes and the cutest candid photo of their mini-me. The internet and social media is an unknown place, so what happens when a child winds up the center of content? Are influencer's kids the new child star? Listen now and join the convo! We are thrilled to have Bumpdate as the sponsor of the Bizzimumzi podcast! Bumpdate is transforming the way we embrace our pregnancies with the first-ever mobile app allowing close friends and families to support expecting parents while they share their expected due dates, pregnancy timelines, gift registry links, planned location of delivery, baby names or nicknames and genders, children's birthdays and ages, and much more in a private, streamlined way. While the app predominantly targets pregnant women and parents, it's also a way for family and friends to intimately follow along their journey and remember to check-in during milestone moments and events. “Plenty of pregnancy tracker apps tell you if your baby is a peach or a cantaloupe, but no app helps you remember the important details about those closest to you,” says Gabrielle Iorio Sylk, Bumpdate Founder and former VP of Operations for a tech startup. “You don't have to tie a string around your finger or add everything into a calendar anymore. Bumpdate takes the work out of remembering, so that our users know when to send that encouraging text or pick out the perfect present.” Bumpdate serves as a private central information source, eliminating the need to continuously ask individual questions about your loved one's pregnancy journey such as expected due dates, what trimester they are in and gift registry links. Add reminders, visible to you alone, that are viewable in your easy to use calendar to keep track of the important times to check in. “Since Gabrielle and I were both pregnant during the loneliest days of the pandemic and then at home with infants, we felt disconnected from our circle of friends,” added Creative Director Tyler Sylk. “Bumpdate enables those connections. It couldn't come at a better time.” A profile takes less than one minute to set up and provides the flexibility of adding as much or as little information as the user would like, while also allowing the user to easily accept or deny friend requests to maintain privacy and limit this information to be viewed by those you trust most. Bumpdate is incredibly user friendly and features a scrollable homepage with an in-app calendar that displays important events by day and month for everyone that a user is following. This week on The Bizzimumzi Podcast, Ashley is joined in conversation by Sarah Armstrong. Sarah is the VP of Global Marketing operations for Google and author of 'The Mom's Guide to a Good Divorce: What to think when children are involved.' Sarah has been on a mission to help dispel myths about divorce, especially as they affect women, and those myths persist despite widespread acceptance of all kinds of blended and nontraditional families. Sarah warns that the stigma of divorce remains, especially for women. Often in the workplace but also on the playground. Sarah offers practical tips and advice for moms striving to create a good divorce and to buffet stereotypes about divorce. In this Bizzimumzi podcast episode we discuss: Dispel the myth of the miserable divorcée by showing your success and happiness with your head held high. Attend your children's events and school meetings with your ex, gracefully acknowledge your children's time spent with your ex as an important time for development for your children, and focus on self-care for yourself. Half-truths about your divorce can mutate and spin out of your reach. Share your situation with a limited number of people, especially at work and among friends too, so that you can control the flow of information and protect your children from misinformation about the details of your divorce. Gossips fuel the myth of the inadequate divorcée. Surround yourself with “energy givers,” Sarah says, not energy takers, which is what gossip is. Don't imbibe them. The media loves an ugly divorce, which fuels the myth that all divorces are ugly. Dispelling this myth is essential to the health and welfare of the children involved. Sarah offers personal stories of how she herself has worked to dispel the myths of being a divorced mom and provides sage advice for taking practical steps to work toward a good divorce. Back in 2018, a business partner and I invested together in a niche website. I had not long sold my Amazon FBA business and wanted to invest some of that money into another online business. We decided to try and find an off-market deal rather than going through a broker. My partner and I started by looking around in private Facebook groups dedicated to website owners. We would simply ask if there was anyone looking to sell. After a lot of back and forth with various potential sellers, we found the site we would ultimately buy - a mom blog! Most of the content was on crafting, cooking, and parenting, and I thought there was a lot of room for growth. You can read more about the process and our initial plans here. In this week's podcast, I want to update you on: how much we bought the mom blog for the ups and downs that we've had over the past 3 years and where the website is today I'll also share with you the sources of income and what it was making when we bought it, and how much it was expected to make in June 2021.
