Regular exercise is one of the most effective methods to keep the heart healthy and efficient. In rare cases, however, there are reports of athletes collapsing mid-game due to cardiac arrest. And while exercise is generally also a key part of the rehabilitation process for those who've experienced cardiac events, caution should still be taken. This is where physician input is important, and where testing and regular monitoring can be implemented to reduce the risk of further events. Today, we're joined by experts in the fields of sports cardiology and exercise physiology, as well as an athlete with firsthand experience in the matter, to draw attention to the topic of cardiac health and how it pertains to sports medicine. In this episode, host Myra Cocker, Assistant Professor of Cardiology at Houston Methodist Hospital and Global Director of Clinical Science for Cardiovascular Ultrasound at Siemens Healthineers, welcomes Dr. Jonathan Kim, Associate Professor and Founding Director at Emory University Sports Cardiology and Team Cardiologist for Georgia Tech, the Atlanta Falcons, Hawks, and Braves; as well as Dr. Dominique Hansen, Professor of Rehabilitation and Exercise Physiology in Cardiometabolic Diseases at Universiteit Hasselt in Belgium and Secretary of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology; and retired professional soccer player and cardiology patient Daniel Engelbrecht. What you'll learn in this episode:How cardiac risk can affect older and younger elite athletes differentlyCardiac events can stem from myocarditis, caused by an infectious disease.Red flag symptoms when it comes to cardiac events while exercising, including intense chest pressure or loss of consciousnessThe use of Automated External Defibrillators is a critical first response strategy in the event of cardiac arrest.Implementation of an exercise program can be essential when treating a patient who has experienced, or is at risk for, cardiovascular disease. For patients who have suffered from major cardiac events, their timeline for return to sports or intense physical activity is heavily dependent on a number of individual factors.Connect with Myra CockerLinkedInConnect with Jonathan KimLinkedInConnect with Dominique HansenLinkedInConnect with Daniel EngelbrechtLinkedIn Hosted on Acast. In this episode of the IJGC podcast, Editor-in-Chief Dr. Pedro Ramirez is joined by Drs. Gabriel Levin and Behrouz Zand to discuss ChatGPT-fabricated abstracts in gynecologic oncology. Dr. Gabriel Levin is a gynecologic oncology Fellow at McGill University, and an assistant professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research encompasses population database studies with clinical implication and innovations in medical education and health care. Dr. Behrouz Zand is a gynecologic oncologist at Houston Methodist Hospital's Neal Cancer Center and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and an assistant professor at Weill Cornell College at Houston Methodist Academic Institute. Specializing in innovative cancer care and clinical trials, he is passionate about integrating AI in medicine, a recent alumnus of the physician program at MIT for AI integration in healthcare. Dr. Zand combines cutting-edge research with compassionate patient care to advance the field. Highlights: Reviewers had difficulty in discriminating ChatGPT-written abstracts. Reviewers correctly identified only 46.3% of ChatGPT-generated abstracts, with human-written abstracts slightly higher at 53.7%. Senior reviewers and those familiar with AI had higher correct identification rates, with senior reviewers at 60% and juniors/residents at 45%. Experience and familiarity with AI were independently associated with higher correct identification rates. ChatGPT assists researchers by generating reviews, summaries, and enhancing writing clarity, but it raises ethical concerns and could diminish human expertise. For non-English speaking authors, it improves writing quality and clarity. In scientific writing, it enhances clarity, summarizes concisely, brainstorms ideas, assists with terminology, and offers data interpretation, augmenting human expertise. ChatGPT and AI in scientific writing can lead to ethical issues, factual inaccuracies, and may eventually diminish human expertise and critical thinking.

And then all of a sudden I even remember where I was sitting in this auditorium, when they said, and there is a professional physical therapy, this profession helps patients recover and they set this example. For example, if you have a patient that is in a car accident or if they have a stroke, the physical therapist helped them walk again. At that moment, I felt like That is exactly what I want to do. And I honestly don't even remember what came after that because I kept thinking about, Oh my God, there's somebody that helps people walk again.” 26:25 “The part that was most impactful to me is they did a phenomenal job in the bomb shelter, all of the walls in the hallway. Once you get down there, there are pictures of patients that were injured during the war and have pictures like one family that the whole family had amputations and the physician who is, she's the director of all of the ICUs, you could see her explaining about that family and what they went through and you could see in her voice, how hard it was for her to talk about that. She went through all of the pictures on the wall and really educated us about what was happening to that country and how civilians, how people just like us were being affected. So that was a very powerful moment.” 30:20 “I'm going to share with you because this was one of the unique moments: For all of us, I was teaching one of my classes and the director of the ICU came in with the the director of all of the ICUs with the director of the ICU, one of the ICUs, and then translator came to me and said, Chris, the doctor is asking if you can interrupt your class for a moment. I said, sure. She needs to address all of the doctors. And she went there, that was, we have been there for about four days at this point. She went there and she told the physicians. I want you to please listen to the Americans. You have no idea what they have done to our patients in the past. Wow. Our patients that were on the ventilator, that we didn't think that they could be extubated. Not only they are no longer on the ventilator, but they're not in ICU anymore. And she was saying that now we have all of these beds in ICU because our patients are leaving the ICU. And please listen to the Americans. They know what they're talking about because we are only four days. And it already changed what hospital that gives me chills.” 35:34 “For all of us who work in acute care,
In this episode, Dr. Sandeep Sahay, a pulmonologist at Houston Methodist Hospital, discusses the concept of disease modification in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension (PH). He explains how traditional PH therapies focus on vasodilation, reducing pressure in the pulmonary artery by dilating blood vessels. However, newer therapies, such as sotatercept, work in different ways to reduce smooth muscle proliferation and thickness of the artery walls. Dr. Sahay suggests that if a drug is labeled as disease-modifying, it may be used in combination with existing PH medications from the beginning of treatment. However, he notes that further research, regulatory approval, and payer considerations are necessary for this to happen. @MethodistHosp @SandeepSahayMD Learn more about pulmonary hypertension trials at www.phaware.global/clinicaltrials. Today we are speaking with Dimitry Sayenko. Dimitry is an MD, PhD and an associate professor in Neuromodulation and Nuerosurgery at Houston Methodist Hospital, in Houston, Texas. Our conversation starts off with an exploration of Dimitry's fascinating beginnings, studying muscle atrophy and bone density in the context of aerospace in both Russia and the U.S. We also talk about his current work studying transcutaneous electrical stimulation and end with a lively exchange of when new discoveries should be implemented in the population. It's a great conversation that addresses the balance between a researcher's drive for mechanism and safeguards against the burning desire of the community for functional recovery and risk assessment. About The Guest: - Dr. Kyle J. Godfrey is an assistant professor in the Departments of Ophthalmology and Neurological Surgery and the Ophthalmology Residency Program Director at Wild Cornell Medicine and New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York, New York. - Dr. Evan Kalin-Hajdu is an assistant professor at the University of Montreal and a member of the department of Ophthalmology at Maisonneuve-Rosemont and Ste. Justine hospitals in Montreal, Quebec. - Dr. Amina Malik is the director of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and an associate professor at the Blanton Eye Institute at Houston Methodist Hospital. Summary: Dr. Kyle Godfrey hosts a discussion with Dr. Evan Kalin-Hajdu, Dr. Amina Malik, and Dr. Gary Lelli about three selected articles from the current issue of OPRS Journal. The first article discusses the predictability of the phenylephrine test in congenital ptosis, the second article evaluates the incidence and risk factors for poor postoperative visual outcomes after excision of orbital cavernous venous malformations, and the third article presents a surgical technique for reconstructing large full-thickness lower eyelid defects. The experts provide their insights and opinions on the articles, discussing the findings, limitations, and potential implications for clinical practice. Key Takeaways: - MMCR is a viable option for moderate levator function congenital ptosis, and the phenylephrine response appears to be the most valuable predictor of surgical outcome. - Surgical excision of orbital cavernous venous malformations carries a risk of vision loss, and the incidence and risk factors for poor postoperative visual outcomes should be carefully considered. - The reconstruction of large full-thickness lower eyelid defects can be achieved using remnant eyelid rotation, semicircular skin and muscle flaps, and lateral tarsoconjunctival flaps, providing good cosmetic outcomes and avoiding the need for a second stage reconstruction.
