Send us a textHawk Call might be the son of OCR legend Hobie Call, but he's rapidly making a name for himself as one of America's most promising mountain runners. After finding success on the track at Utah Valley University with a 14:42 5K PR, Hawk initially followed his father's footsteps into obstacle course racing. However, the explosive growth of trail running soon captured his attention, and in 2024 he established himself as a force in the mountain running scene by winning both the Cirque Series Grand Targhee race and the Speedgoat 28K.Now selected for the prestigious Trail Team Elite 2025 squad, Hawk shares his methodical approach to the sport and his plans to tackle the Golden Trail World Series with races in Italy, Broken Arrow Skyrace, and Austria. What sets him apart is his dedication to sub-ultra distances in a country often fixated on ultramarathons. "I like the sub-ultra scene on the trails," he explains. "They're just short enough where you can push yourself so hard the whole time... if you want to compete and win, you have to go fast the whole time."Despite working full-time, Hawk maintains a rigorous training schedule, rising at 4:30 AM for his first workout of the day. This discipline clearly reflects his father's influence - "One thing I definitely learned from him was it's not a 'have to,' it's a 'get to' kind of thing," Hawk shares, describing the positive mindset that drives his pursuit of excellence.Follow Hawk Call's journey as he aims to close the gap with Europe's elite mountain runners and help grow the American sub-ultra trail running scene. His methodical progression, work ethic, and pure love of the sport make him one of the most exciting athletes to watch in 2025.Follow Hawk on IG - @hawk_callFollow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff on IG - @steepstuff_pod

This week's episode is full of live interviews from the Spartan Sprint and Super weekend outside Las Vegas (technically in Arizona), and my own recap from the race. I spoke with Veejay Jones all about his race, racing against Cody Moat and Hobie Call, and a little bit about the upcoming show Million Dollar Mile. I also spoke with Hobie Call about his return to racing this year, and Cody Moat about racing neck-and-neck with Veejay, and I ask them both about their Sprint race and what races they'll be at this year. I wasn't able to grab an interview with Cera Edgley at the venue, so I gave her a quick call on the road and Cera told me about her podium finish at the Sprint on Saturday, and more about the disqualification she and Timmie Brann received on Sunday.

Hunter McIntyre is not only one of the most accomplished endurance athletes in the world, but he also has the kind of physique that almost every red-blooded man on earth would love to have. However, his story doesn’t begin with success and a jacked body. After years of hard partying and run-ins with the law left him with nothing but a boatload of heartache and unfilled potential, Hunter found himself participating in a Spartan Race on a whim. Still hungover from the night before, he finished only 8 minutes behind world champion, Hobie Call. Obstacle Course Racing instantly became the catalyst to the change he needed in his life. Now known as “The Sheriff,” Hunter has become a dominate force on the OCR circuit. He’s a champion of Stone Cold Steven Austin’s Broken Skull Challenge and an Elite Spartan Athlete. In this special episode of Renegade Radio, co-hosted by my good friend and world-renowned strength and conditioning coach, Joe Defranco, Hunter shares his story and secrets to success. From his intense training regimen to his unconventional approach to nutrition, he details the methods and mindset that have helped him pummel his competition and become a champion. Listen as we discuss: Why he has decided to pursue his passion for the iron. [8:45] His colorful past and superhero origin story. [9:43] “Work hard and you become hard.” How hitting rock bottom and going to rehab led to his new life. [13:01] How his training has evolved in his pursuit to be a well-balanced athlete. [17:46] What does a typical week of training look like now? [22:07] How many hours does he train per day and what does a high intensity workout look like? [24:08] Has he sustained any serious Injuries doing OCR? [27:20] How he manages to break the “rules” of nutrition and still stay ripped. [28:21] What methods does he use to recover from brutal races and high intensity training? [30:06] How to use social media “like a battleship”. [33:05] What mindset do you need to become successful at OCR? [34:24] Great resources to help you build a stronger mindset. [36:22] This episode is brought to you by Cured Nutrition. “You'll never know the highest highs until you’ve experienced the lowest lows. I’ve been there.”Hunter McIntyreAt odds with the world seemingly since birth, the future wasn't looking so bright for Hunter McIntyre.A misfit kid with uncontrollable attention deficit disorder, Hunter realized early and often he functioned on one mode no sedative or bipolar medication could possibly curb: full blast.Discovering drugs and alcohol at 14 give his ill-at-ease nature comfort, but trouble soon follows. A downward spiral that invites increased school suspensions; escalating run-ins with Johnny Law; and even a short-lived, unsuccessful stint at military school in West Virginia.Facing jail time or rehab for a drug-fueled senior year prank gone terribly awry, Hunter's despairing parents ultimately ship him off to outpatient care in Montana, hoping clean air and big skies will bring grounding and perspective to young Hunter's errant ways. But dirty drug tests follow, leading to incarceration-type rehab stays in Nevada and New Mexico.Ultimately Hunter's sobriety officer intervenes, hooking him up with a logging job back in Montana.Hunter bulks up. Sober up? Not so much. The next chapter finds Hunter in Los Angeles, failing upward with lucrative modeling gigs for companies like J. Crew and Abercrombie and Fitch while setting his sights on becoming a celebrity personal trainer. But life goals are eclipsed by an ever-escalation in partying. Living the sun-drenched frat boy lifestyle in a Malibu bro-house, days and nights revolve around girls, ecstasy, mushrooms, acid, more girls and even more alcohol.A spontaneous booze-fueled, chest-pumping whim leads to Hunter and his Malibros challenging each other to sign up for a local Spartan Race — unchartered terrain for all involved. But come race day, only Hunter is able to drag his hung over body out of bed. Despite several beers enjoyed that morning, he nonetheless finishes ninth overall, just eight minutes behind world champion and 2:16 marathoner Hobie Call. And just like that, the lights turn on. It's the wake up call Hunter needed. The rest is history.Immediately parting ways with his partying ways, purpose and focus take center stage. Almost overnight, Hunter morphs into the man they call The Sheriff, transforming himself into one of the world's best obstacle course racers. A rare talent with the body and size of a cross fitter who not only excels at strength, speed and agility but also boasts the endurance of a Kenyan.Sponsorship offers soon follow. Magazine cover stories abound. And notoriety ensues, outpaced only by The Sheriff's now famous, quickly growing ego.Full blast finally found a life.If you know anything about Hunter, you know he has a huge, at times controversial personality. But there is a thoughtful, far more contemplative side to this brash, outspoken athlete than meets the eye. I think you will be surprised by our conversation. I know I was.Specific topics explored include:* Hunter's colorful past* what is OCR?* replacing superficiality with performance* Hunter's typical training day* ego rightsizing* the importance of meditation* exploring the vegan lifestyle * Hunter's Achilles heel* Hunter's daily routine* the SEAL dream* advice to the younger self* Joe DeSena & the Death Race* the importance of surrounding yourself with selfless people I sincerely hope you enjoy our exchange. Episode 69-In today's show, we revisit a couple of events from previous episodes. Sam Abbitt is the founder and CEO of Savage Race. We first met him back on Episode 7 in July of 2012. Since then, Savage has put on many successful races in several markets. We catch up with Sam to find out what they are doing right and what is next. Next we catch up with Hunter Brucks, the new "man with the plan" over at Extreme Nation. EN has resurfaced and their first event is scheduled near Tampa, Florida in February of 2014. Hunter tells me they still plan on having large payouts ($40k) at each race. Also, Hobie Call and his vision of a spectator friendly "coliseum" style course are still part of the plan. Listen in to find out what's going to be different this time around and how they plan to make it a success. Remember, you can still donate to our Indiegogo campaign to get greatly discounted race entries, swag, and have your favorite athlete followed at World's Toughest Mudder. Today's episode is sponsored by Pretty Muddy and by Ruckus Obstacle Race.
If you have not heard by now. Hobie Call lost for the first time in any obstacle race less than half marathon distance. He was beaten by Hunter "The Sheriff" McIntyre at the Superhero Scramble Intimidator in Clermont, Florida on Saturday. With less than a mile to go, he was actually in 5th place before turning it on to finish 2nd. In today's episode, you will hear interviews with Hobie, Hunter, and David Magida. David placed 4th less than 30 seconds behind Hobie. They will all talk about how important swimming was at this race and how that race affected the future of OCR. I will then play my interview with Rachel Moraes. She is a mom, an english teacher, and part time college student. She runs marathons, OCRs, and ultras. We crossed paths online one day and I was excited to speak with her. This interview took place a few months ago, so I am glad to finally bring it to you.
In honor of the Spartan Race World Championships taking place in Lake Tahoe, CA, this week's episode is all about Seasoned Spartans! Our main interview is with Hobie Call, a Utah-based father of five, a member of the Spartan Race Pro Team and someone who is often referred to as the Godfather of Obstacle Racing. With a background as a distance runner, he ran first Spartan Race in 2011, and has since run 84 obstacle races, picking up a stunning 57 first place finishes and becoming a fan favorite along the way. In 2015, he stepped away from professional racing – prompting some to believe he had retired. But he wasn't done, and nothing proved that more than when he showed up to the 2016 Spartan Race World Championships and walked away with his third world championship title. This year, he's making one more run at glory, working toward becoming the first masters athlete to top the overall elite podium at the 2017 Spartan Race World Championships – before officially retiring for REAL this time. In this episode, Hobie talks about the competition that almost prompted him to throw in the towel (and potentially miss out on an illustrious obstacle racing career), what he believes to be the most important thing when it comes to racing (spoiler alert: it's not winning!), and why he decided to call it a day after this current "retirement party" season.
