What happens when disaster strikes a historic building? And how do you even begin to move an entire house to a new state? In this episode of True Tales From Old Houses, Stacy and Daniel explore the incredible efforts people make to save history—one building at a time. First, historic preservation specialist Robert Killian joins Stacy and Daniel to talk about FEMA's role in protecting historic buildings and cultural heritage when disaster strikes. He explains how FEMA helps communities rebuild, what compliance rules come into play, and why preserving family treasures is just as important as saving big historic landmarks. Plus, he shares practical tips for disaster preparedness—because you never know when Mother Nature (or an unexpected plumbing disaster) might throw you a curveball. Then, they chat with Pete Galloway, who took his passion for historic preservation to the next level by moving an entire house from Connecticut to Savannah, Georgia. He shares the wild journey of securing funding, navigating city approvals, and figuring out how to transport a whole building. Now the proud owner of Printmakers Inn, Pete also gives us a behind-the-scenes look at running a historic inn, finding the right team for restoration projects, and why saving old buildings is always worth the effort. From disaster recovery to house-moving adventures, this episode has it all! Whether you're a history buff, a preservationist, or love a good "you won't believe what happened next" story, you won't want to miss it! We have a very special anniversary episode for you today with Chad Trammell and Matt B. Davis. We start the episode with Chad Trammell who you may remember from episode 1 (if you have been listening that long) where we talked about his World’s Toughest Mudder win in 2015. In this episode we talk about his 2016 performance where he teamed up with Robert Killian to take a shot at Tough Mudder’s $100,000 bonus for winning AND reaching 100 miles. Chad shares with us the difference in running alone as well as with a team, and talks about his impressive 100-mile finish. Unfortunately, one team beat them out with 105 miles, so they didn’t get the $100,000 but Chad said it wasn’t about the money to begin with. It looks like Chad is looking to go back to WTM 2017 and will be joining Heather and I at L.A.’s Toughest Mudder in March. For the second part we have Matt B. Davis who was on the show before in episode 22. Having Matt on was especially important to us because he has been a major contributor to the success of this show. He also talks to us about his upcoming Tough Guy race. If you have seen Rise of the Sufferfests: A Documentary you will know exactly why Matt is a bit intimidated by this race even though he has been racing for years. You can hear and read more from Matt over at Obstacle Racing Media. This episode is sponsored by Lucky 13 Coaching with Nickademus Hollon. Ryan Atkins, coming off an exceptional race season, finishing 2nd in The Spartan World Championships behind a fearless and relatively unknown Robert Killian, now sets his sites on World's Toughest Mudder. Ryan won this event last year but this year with the stakes up to $100,000 for the first team to complete 100 miles in 24 hours, he has opted to create what many feel is a dream team. Learn who these team mates are, and as a bonus, get a heads up on the all new Online Obstacle Race Training program created by Ryan, Matt Murphy and Jon Albon.
Episode 149 - On today's show we have some hot off the press interviews with the top finishers of the 2015 Spartan World Championships from Lake Tahoe. Robert Killian was introduced to most of us with his 3rd place finish on the televised Spartan race from Palmerton, a few weeks ago. In this episode, we learn about how his previous experience prepared him for success, and how he learned to beat the best of the best. We also learn what he is up to for the rest of the 2015 Championship season. Zuzana Kocumova surprised everyone, including herself, by being the first female to cross the finish line, beating out favorites (and previous champions) Amelia Boone, Claude Godbout and Rose Wetzel. We caught up with her on the phone less than 12 hours before she flew back home to the Czech Republic. How is Spartan getting the rig she won to her house? Will we see her at more races?
