Kallie Bonnell has been a friend of mine for a long time. We got closer during a Ragnar Relay adventure in September 2024. Read my recap here. During this episode, sponsored by Athlete Bouquets, we talk about: How I roped Kallie into joining my Ragnar team because she is a yes person when it comes to new experiences The story of when we thought the battery on our Ragnar van died overnight Getting through her last leg of the race even though it sucked Her upbringing in a small farm town in Northern Indiana How her and some college friends came up with their own Little “Little” 500 at Indiana University that involved a stationary bike and alcohol Training for her first half marathon in 2009 Calling off a wedding less than 30 days before the actual wedding and using running to get through it Losing her mom unexpectedly and not being able to move or run at all The car accident that happened the night before we were doing the Rock ‘n' Roll Vegas half marathon (and how we both peed our pants) Her three knee surgeries in three years Traveling for fun and for work (she's been to Russia and has a Russian visa) Why she doesn't do the dating apps anymore (she's looking for actual dates and someone with a passport, people!) We're opening up the playbook on life's second acts, showcasing the sweat, setbacks, and serendipity that fuel a comeback story worth its salt in muscle burn.Mount Washington is more than just a monument to nature's grandeur; it marks a turning point in Marc's family history, from chain-smoking days to trailblazing ways. Marc's story intertwines with his narrative of a health scare that rebooted his life, as we explore the profound impact of the great outdoors on personal transformation. This episode is a deep dive into the grit and grind that shape us, the family legacies that guide us, and the audacious goals that propel a small-town fitness venture into a community cornerstone.Sit back and strap in as we explore the raw, muscle-aching reality of GORUCK events, the resilience built from embracing both the metaphorical and literal heavy lifting, and the communal heartbeat that kept MoeFit pulsing through a pandemic. On November 11, friend of the podcast Allison Mercer ran a new American record for masters women at the Tunnel Hill 50-mile! This week, we got to talk to Allison about how she prepared for the race in the six weeks between running the Berlin Marathon and Tunnel Hill, and we heard all about her crew, her nutrition, her race strategy, her shoes, and of course, how the Ragnar Relay we did together in April contributed directly to her performance.
A special bonus episode that we're also calling "The Outro" for episode 74. We're joined by some members of the "Ultra Penguins" who just ran in this past weekends Reach The Beach Ragnar Relay. They were members of Erika's team and it was fun getting to hear who the 200 mile event went. Hope you enjoy this bonus episode with Knute, Erika, Eric (E2), Karen and Denise. Kate Graham joined us as our special guest co-host on this episode of our NOW Digital Meetup. Kate has an incredible track record providing clear voice and a healthy perspective on the trends, challenges, and innovations relevant to people, work, and technology. We loved following her work at Fosway Group and UNLEASH. Now it's time to check in on Kate's recent move back to the vendor side (what a win for Cornerstone OnDemand!). She had some really fantastic advice for both HR Tech vendors AND consumers. It has to do with transparency, being realistic, and better storytelling. Kate and I can't wait to bring this fresh conversation to the community. BTW, where's Jess Von Bank? She checked in from the course during our Meetup to share their progress! If you've been following us for a while, you know Jess loves to race. During this epsidoe, Jess began a 200-mile Ragnar Relay from the Canadian border (Blaine, WA), running along the glacial Cascade and Olympic Mountain ranges, Deception Pass, and Puget Sound before she crossed the finish line with her team on Whidbey Island, sometime in the afternoon. Go, Jess!

As we celebrate Mother's Day, our guest this week is a mom to young boys who focuses on women's health and running injuries as part of her day job. This physical therapist talks on the “Run the Race” podcast about the benefits of exercise for moms, finding time to do so…the most common injuries she sees at their clinic, how they can be prevented…how motherhood transformed her faith in God…and the misconceptions about exercise during and after pregnancy. (5:17) My judgment-free chat with Rachel Selman starts with balancing motherhood and exercise and work, now that she has 2 sons, ages 1 and 4. (9:52) She talks about what she learned about workouts after having a baby, plus what's safe to do while you're pregnant, with a lot of bad advice out there about rules and limits. She didn't run for the entire 10 months of her first pregnancy, but it was much different the 2nd time around. She saw a gap in guidance and education for pregnant women exercising and post-partem, motivating her to help more with women's health and give specialized advice. She also encourages a (21:44) healthy balance with strength training, for the sake of longevity, not necessarily heavy weights or bulky muscle, but being stronger can also make you a faster and more efficient runner. (23:06) What are the most common sports-related injuries and can they be prevented? The short answer from Rachel is yes. She says people often do Core training in the wrong way, explaining “deep core.” And the stronger the glutes, the fewer issues you have below that. Her 3 top things to focus on: core, hips, and feet! She explains why. Rachel also describes how bring a mom (35:47) has changed her faith and perspective on God, moving more from religion to relationship, pointing to a moment in her life involving a injury to her son, teaching her about trusting in God that doesn't always rescue us either. And she says it takes practice to…let go. (43:18) As a PT and soon-to-be performance/sport scientist, Rachel has a message for women about finding something active you enjoy, what that does for your mental health and how it affects motherhood. (48:07) She also recently took part in a Ragnar Relay, the only female on a competitive male team, running together night and day. Thanks for listening! I met Mark a few years ago while filming my friends Ragnar Relay team (These are relay races done over a 24 hour period usually covering over 200 miles). He was the senior member of the 6-man ultra team (most teams have 12 members). One of Mark's experiences is particularly interesting to me. When his kids were younger, he and his wife took them sailing for 17 months straight. Before their voyage began He did not know how to sail, he didn't own a sailboat & no, he was not (is not) independently wealthy. His motto is "Live fearlessly into the dreams uniquely written upon your heart”. Years prior (before he had any kids) he make a 'bucket list' of things he wanted to do in life. On this list was to sail with his family for a year. Despite some major hurdles, they found a way to make it happen.Blog about Mark & Sue's Sailing adventure4wheelersailing.blogspot.comBook'Born to Run' by Christopher McdougallSocks & Soul Contact InformationFacebook- @socksandsoulpodcastOnline- socksandsoul.comEmail- host@socksandsoul.com
What do you get if you run 12 Ragnar Relay events in a calendar year? You get what's called Immortal Status and that comes with a giant medal to go with a year full of adventure. In this episode of the Mile after Mile Podcast I talk to Kyler Wilson who is a graphic designer in Central Florida who loves to run Ragnar Relay events. A few years ago he set out to achieve Immortal Status and he explains what that is, how it works, how he did it and what you get when that happens. If you want to do this too Kyler has set up a Facebook Group for people who have already achieved this and just people who are thinking about it. You can find Kyler online on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @runsoncarbs. Kyler gave me some photos of his medal and the year of medals check those out in the show notes at www.mileaftermilepodcast.com You can also find the text of the interview there. Kevin Yeanoplos returns to the podcast from episode 17 to share with us his recent experiences in his hobby of road trips visiting historical musical landmarks and his latest relay run! Kevin and John have a deep conversation on having a passion or hobby in life!
The year was 2004, and an overnight running relay race with less than 300 participants was getting underway in Utah. That race, the brainchild of two college students, led to something much, much bigger: Ragnar Relay, an endurance event and running experience that all these years later attracts thousands of runners each year to participate in more than 40 road and trail relay races in the United States. This race experience also is taking place all across the world. Tanner Bell, co-founder of Ragnar Relay, talks with Heather about his humble college-student beginnings as a race organizer (and non-runner, at least in the beginning) during this episode. Tanner, who is married, has 4 children and now serves as CEO of Ragnar, talks candidly about what it's like to see something he started in college grow to become such a successful company and brand. He shares how Ragnar determines race locations and courses, what it was like to live overseas with his family while launching the international race, and exciting things Ragnarians can expect in the coming months.
This was the last year for the road version of the Ragnar Relay race in Arizona, Del Sol. Steve Aderholt was a such a big part of Ragnar Relay over the years and it was an honor to get a chance the day after the race to talk with him about all things Ragnar! Steve has an incredible story of how he was able to become an employee of Ragnar and then excel at multiple roles for the race company. Steve was an integral part of the safety program for this race as well as developing out the trail version of this race. Thank you Steve for all you have done for so many runners and all those who have enjoyed the Ragnar Life over the years! Let's do this!
Chris was an athlete in school growing up, even setting a running record at the school he attended in Washington State. Chris attended University of Washington and continued to run. He has had several knee surgeries but continues to push himself to stay active and run. He was asked to join a team for a Ragnar Relay and he said yes right away! He quickly was made captain of the team. He applied to be an Ragnar Relay ambassador for the races in the Washington State region. Let's do this!
Jeff was a really great runner in high school but kind of stopped running for awhile as he got older. That is until he was asked by a friend to run a Ragnar Relay race in 2016. He was hooked right away. Jeff describes this race and community as "crazy awesome"! Let's do this!
We interview one of the founders of Ragnar Relay, Tanner Bell in the first of our new Podcast episodes. Enjoy! #ukrunchat

For Episode 16, I had the honor and privilege to interview Tim Park! Tim is a good friend of mine, and he is quite the adventurer. This episode was a fun one because although Tim has run some races (e.g., LA Marathon, Ragnar Relay, various races, etc.), he is not naturally drawn to running. He goes more into this in the latter parts of the episode! It is also worth noting that Tim has been involved in philanthropic efforts with Love Anaheim. Love Anaheim was founded in January 2016, and it is a service project movement that has mobilized the help of over 2,700 volunteers for 200+ projects across the City of Anaheim. These projects fill the needs of people who need help or assistance. Love Anaheim has an initiative called "Better Way Anaheim" that provides access to resources to help bring an end to homelessness. Especially if you live in the Orange County (California) area, check out their website (https://www.LoveAnaheim.org) to see what they do and how you can get involved! #7: RAGNAR RELAY: REMEMBERING WHAT MATTERS + ENJOYING THE JOURNEY We are Rachel Bellotti and Jenell Riesner, co-hosts of the TRUE NORTH COLLECTIVE PODCAST, exploring everyday people fearlessly finding and living their true north. We have met so many interesting people from all walks of life living fascinating and inspiring lives whose stories aren’t being told. This season we are excited to connect with and celebrate the untold stories of everyday people from Sheboygan, WI, to Santa Monica, CA, who are living their true north and inspiring each of us to do the same. Today we check-in with our own changes and accomplishments over the last 6 months. We remember what it was like to train for the Ragnar in Zion National Park (Utah), move our lives across the country, become chill athletes, and find human connection with a group of people who were willing to throw themselves into nature without technology and limited privacy, running 120 miles in 30 hours. Whoop whoop! *note: this episode includes explicit language appropriate for those ages 16+ RESOURCES MENTIONED: Kickapoo coffee - we miss this coffee shop in Milwaukee where we used to spend a lot of time brainstorming on the TRUE NORTH COLLECTIVE Garmin vivosport November Project Dallas Dallas Dirt Runners Tiffany Parker - lululemon ambassador + olympic athlete Is there such thing as working out too much? Blog post by Jenell Riesner Jackie Haas - former WWE wrestler that works with Rachel Bellotti Ragnar Relays Intro music from Jukedeck - create your own at http://jukedeck.com 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS: It’s a constant journey to find a balance that works for you and your lifestyle versus trying to do more and more and more of what you have deemed as “good”. Because even good habits can become bad habits or said another way, there can be too much of a “good” thing that ultimately is no longer serving you. Doing big physical feats of strength, or having a unique experience with a group of humans, on a team without technology, where you spend at least 24 hours together non-stop, and only focusing on one thing that you are all working towards really brings people together. It exposes you to people’s true colors, heightens your human connection, vulnerability, support, and presence with yourself and other humans. It’s an experience worth having. In racing and in life, it’s ok to slow down, pace yourself, and be present to what you need now. Allow people to pass if they are ready to pass. Follow if it’s your turn to follow. Lead if you are ready to lead. Be where you are and allow yourself to be on the journey and appreciative of wherever that is that you are. Sarah hosts solo, but she’s not alone: She gabs with three of her teammates from the recent Ragnar Relay Northwest Passage race. First up is team captain Julie, a runner for only five years yet marvel that she’s running back-to-back Ragnar races! Laugh along with the two Van 1 teammates as they recount a race highlight that includes a menagerie of a zebra, alligator, beaver, and a literal couple of frogs. Julie offers tips for being a relay race captain, including the all-critical “go with the flow” advice. Next SBS is joined in studio by a duo of Van 2 runners, Rebekah and Ariel. Be transported by Ariel’s description of the stunning scenery. Ponder along with all four gals as they discuss how--and possibly why--van “culture” differs. You might recognize Tina from Episode 31 of the podcast. She’s an 11-time All-American athlete and elite athlete for Great Britain who’s run in two British Olympic Trials. Tina recently overcame amenorrhea by taking a break from training, had a daughter, and is now returning to competitive running. But we’re not here to talk about Tina. We’re here to talk about YOUR questions, problems, and struggles. In this conversation, we’re discussing: If you can only run a few times per week, should those runs all be “hard?” Do compression socks actually work? How do you advance beyond walking to run all of your miles? What are the most important things to remember when training for a Ragnar Relay? How do you pace a long run? And a lot more!

You couldn't miss Team MRG at this fall's Reebok Ragnar Relay Michigan, a 195.5-mile trek from Muskegon to Traverse City. And it wasn't simply because our team of 12 women wore matching blue Michigan Runner Girl shirts. Fellow Ragnarians grew to learn, over the 2-day race, that Team Michigan Runner Girl traveled in the two purple-and-pink-and-blue Muscle Milk vans—handing out Muscle Milk goodies along the way. MRG's partnership with Muscle Milk was new this year, but logging the miles on country roads, through quaint coastal towns, and along the Lake Michigan shoreline was not. Team MRG was back again, after last fall's inaugural Ragnar Relay Michigan event, to tackle the distance (and lack of sleep) together. On this week's show: a rundown of race weekend with Heather Durocher and Ragnar teammates Pam Carrigan, Erin Henshaw and Ann Eshleman. While Pam, Heather and Erin were part of last year's Ragnar team, Ann was a Ragnar newbie and she shares how the experience exceeded her expectations in all of the right ways (she also talks about how she was apprehensive going into the experience and had plenty of questions for Pam in the days leading up to race day). The women break down how Ragnar relays work, how 12-person teams split into two "mini teams" with their own van, the challenges and rewards of running a total of three separate "legs," including through the night, and how each van found ways to fuel (at a few delicious restaurants) and rest (a little!) throughout the race. Heather and Ann were in van 1 while Erin and Pam were in van 2. Whether you also participated in this year's Ragnar Michigan, or you're thinking about giving one a try, you're sure to be entertained during this informative and, at times hilarious, episode. (While "what happens at Ragnar stays at Ragnar," this episode definitely sheds some light on the silly and fun things that can happen when a dozen women team up to cover "200-ish miles" together.)
I just had the most incredible experience running 200 miles in upstate NY with 8 other crazies. I recap how I felt throughout each leg, my times, what I ate, what we did pre and post-race, my tips for future Ragnarians, and more. The RunRunLive 4.0 Podcast Episode 4-373 – Bill Sycalik Runs the National Park System (Audio: link) audio:http://www.RunRunLive.com/PodcastEpisodes/epi4373.mp3] Link MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Hello and welcome to this autumn edition of the RunRunlive podcast. I'm a bit tardy with this one because of a perfect storm of scheduling priorities. Like I said I have a new gig in the city where I have been figuring out the commute and putting in long hours, plus I've been in the final stages of a training plan with those long runs and hard workouts. Time has been short and logistics has been challenging for writing and recording. But, this is not the ‘whine about things' podcast. No this is the RunRunLive podcast where we talk about transformational power of endurance sports. Today we interview Bill Sycalik from Run the parks – you may have seen him in that running magazine or heard him on a podcast recently – he's got a good PR presence and it's a great story. It's a good chat. I like what he's doing. It's a good transformational story. Like I said in the interludes comment last week I've been hard pressed with a new professional gig. I had two business trips this past week and have been putting in some long hours. I'm not complaining, I love it and I understand that the first 90 days in any new position, whether it's a contract or a new job or a new role in your current company – those first 90 days are a special opportunity that you need to seize. And that can adjust your life balance. So – here it is Saturday and I'm going to give you the present of a few hours of my thoughtful attention, my RunRunLive friends. Training has been a struggle over the last couple weeks but I did get a nice long run in on the Wapack course and I've got another tomorrow. Am I ready for the Maine Marathon in 3 weeks? Of course. I could roll out of bed on a random Tuesday and run a marathon. Am I in race shape? I give myself a solid B- on that. My engine is still good but my legs aren't keeping up as well. The big news, I guess, is that I got my confirmation letter for the 2018 Boston Marathon. This will be my 20th Boston. I am qualified for this race. For those of you who have been on this journey with me, or more correctly on your own journeys with me, we've seen some ups and downs haven't we? We've been witness to many things. We've experienced the meat and marrow of many endurance happenings. We've learned a lot. What a long wonderful trip it's been, huh? … Here's a story from one of my first days in the new office. I have been getting into the city early to beat the traffic. Another team member showed up. Just he and I, chatting. I don't know how we got on the subject, maybe it was a segue from the nice cool fall weather, but he starts telling me about the time he ran the Ragnar Relay on Cape Cod. I nod and ask some clarifying questions like, ‘Did you have a 12-person team? Did anyone pull up injured?” Then he tells me about how he ran it with his Spartan buddies and about how obstacle racing is really his big thing. I ask, “Do you run that one up in Killington?” He says, “Yeah, I love the Beast.” I say, “Good for you, that's a tough race.” He says, “Yeah, I did it in like 9 ½ hours.” And the point of my story is that I didn't say a word about myself. I just complimented him on his achievements. Because, I try not to be ‘that guy' in the office. I always have tried not to be ‘that guy' that people avoid because ‘that guy' always drives the conversation back to himself. Let people celebrate their lives and achievements. Don't always be playing ‘who's got the biggest', even if they stumble into your domain of expertise. Celebrate with them. It's not about you. … But just for the record…Remember back when we ran the Ragnar as a Brooks sponsored ultra team with 6 athletes and won it? And, yeah, remember when I talked to Joe DeSena about his Spartan stuff last year and he gave me an entry to the Killington Beast and a ran it in 6 ½ hours as a 54 year old? But, it's not about me, is it! Hah! On with the show. … I'll remind you that the RunRunLive podcast is ad free and listener supported. What does that mean? It means you don't have to listen to me trying to sound sincere about Stamps.com or Audible.. (although, fyi, my MarathonBQ book is on audible) We do have a membership option where you can become a member and as a special thank you, you will get access to member's only audio. There are book reviews, odd philosophical thoughts, zombie stories and I curate old episodes for you to listen to. I recently added that guy who cut off is foot so he could keep training and my first call with Geoff Galloway. “Curated” means I add some introductory comments and edit them up a bit. So anyhow – become a member so I can keep paying my bills. … The RunRunLive podcast is Ad Free and listener supported. We do this by offering a membership option where members get Access to Exclusive Members Only audio and articles. Member only race reports, essays and other bits just for you! Links National Parks Marathon Project - Generosity.com Crowdfunding Page - If you want to include it - I'm Brand Ambassador for Hammer Nutrition (), Gnarly Nutrition (), Teatulia (), Footbeat () and Running Buddy () Social media is below in bio. Bio Bill Sycalik is the founder of the National Parks Marathon Project, his full-time effort to run a self-directed, self-managed, self-measured 26.2 miles in all 59 U.S. National Parks. Until June 2016 Bill was a management consultant leading large technology projects in New York City. Unfortunately, his passion for health, fitness and the outdoors were out of synch with his profession and location. He wanted to break from the corporate world and get back to nature. When he read about the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, as a marathon runner, Bill thought what better way to experience the parks than covering 26.2 miles in each one. He saw an opportunity to promote the National Parks, reconnect with the natural world through long trail runs and inspire people to get out and move in our country's unspoiled wilderness. So, he quit his job and started running the parks. Bill ran 48 marathons in the past 54 weeks completing all the parks in the lower 48 states plus the U.S. Virgin Islands. He is now planning to visit the parks in Hawaii, American Samoa in Alaska. To learn more about Bill and the project go to www.runningtheparks.com. To connect with Bill and join him at a park please reach out via Instagram (@runningtheparks), Twitter (@runtheparks) or Facebook ().… Section two – The First 90 Days - http://runrunlive.com/the-first-90-days Outro Ok my friends you have run through various national parks in various states to the end of episode 4-373 of the RunRunLive Podcast. Please wipe that dirt of your feet before you come in. I drove up to Quebec for an appointment this week and the leaves are starting to turn. It's a pretty drive but there is nothing up there in northern NH and VT. Since the paper mills left there really isn't much industry. There's no traffic either. You can just set the cruise control and nap for a couple hours. Having had an office in Quebec City for a number of years I know this route very well. And, I know that if you want to you can cut through Franconia Notch. There are a string of mountain hiking trails in there, smack dab in the middle of the Presidential Range of mountains. I pulled off, threw my kit on and went for an afternoon run/hike up the falling waters trail up the side of Mt. Lafayette. It's a super difficult trail. You can't really run it. The rangers call it ‘falling people trail' because of all the tourists they have to drag out. It's really pretty though. Runs right up a cascading brook. Not runnable per se but certainly works your legs and gets your HR up. I only fell once on the way back down. Like I said I'm still trying to figure out the rhythms of my new gig. We are all in the same boat. We all get the same 24 hours. You just have to figure out the rhythm that works to balance everything. You have to remember that any change like this causes stresses that you may not be aware of. They can manifest in ways you're not aware of. Just got to keep your head right and try to get enough sleep! I did get a club membership in the building and that should give me more flexibility to work out around the traffic or even just to shower and start exploring Boston with my feet. I've never actually lived in the city and hence really don't know my way around the city proper much. When I'm not traveling I'll see if I can't seize that opportunity to fill in some blanks. I've missed a few workouts with the travel and the exhaustion but I do what I can. That's the secret, do what you can. I'll see you out there. Don’t always be playing ‘who’s got the biggest’, even if they stumble into your domain of expertise. Celebrate with them. It’s not about you. But, it’s not about me, is it! Hah! On with the show. … I’ll remind you that the RunRunLive podcast is ad free and listener supported. What does that mean? It means you don’t have to listen to me trying to sound sincere about Stamps.com or Audible.. (although, fyi, my MarathonBQ book is on audible) We do have a membership option where you can become a member and as a special thank you, you will get access to member’s only audio. He saw an opportunity to promote the National Parks, reconnect with the natural world through long trail runs and inspire people to get out and move in our country’s unspoiled wilderness. Please wipe that dirt of your feet before you come in. I drove up to Quebec for an appointment this week and the leaves are starting to turn. It’s a pretty drive but there is nothing up there in northern NH and VT. Since the paper mills left there really isn’t much industry. There’s no traffic either. Lafayette. It’s a super difficult trail. You can’t really run it. The rangers call it ‘falling people trail’ because of all the tourists they have to drag out. It’s really pretty though. Runs right up a cascading brook. Not runnable per se but certainly works your legs and gets your HR up. I only fell once on the way back down. Like I said I’m still trying to figure out the rhythms of my new gig. We are all in the same boat. We all get the same 24 hours. You just have to figure out the rhythm that works to balance everything. You have to remember that any change like this causes stresses that you may not be aware of. They can manifest in ways you’re not aware of. Just got to keep your head right and try to get enough sleep! I did get a club membership in the building and that should give me more flexibility to work out around the traffic or even just to shower and start exploring Boston with my feet. I’ve never actually lived in the city and hence really don’t know my way around the city proper much. When I’m not traveling I’ll see if I can’t seize that opportunity to fill in some blanks. I’ve missed a few workouts with the travel and the exhaustion but I do what I can. That’s the secret, do what you can. I’ll see you out there. A common theme among most participants of a Ragnar Relay race is that of initial wondering what they got themselves into. That is quickly replaced by the experience of the team and this great community. KelleyAnn shares how she was introduced to doing a Ragnar race, and then how she loves to get the chance to do as many as she can that fits with her busy schedule. We had a great time talking about how much fun this is to enjoy the Ragnar Life! Lets do this!
Sarah and co-host Adrienne Martini chat with four mother runners (including one whose voice will be very familiar to you if you listen to National Public Radio!) about how they manage to merge running with their non-traditional work schedules: Guests include a midwife, dairy farmer, ER nurse, and Tamara Keith, NPR’s White House correspondent and co-host of NPR Politics podcast. Interspersed throughout the episode are Voice Memos from numerous shift workers and other folks who work unconventional hours, adding to the lively conversation about how mother runners rack up miles on little sleep, “catch-as-catch-can” nutrition, and stand-all-day legs. Hear why healthcare workers make ready-to-run Ragnar Relay teammates, and why farmwork is built-in cross-training for running. Find out if Tamara laces up her running shoes at the White House. All these ladies impart important reminders to us all, no matter what our work/life schedules, including “running is not going anywhere” and “it’s going to be great.” (Just... Sarah and Dimity have a virtual sit-down with Jennifer Roe and Katie Foster, two of the stars of the new documentary “From Fat to Finish Line,” which chronicles a team of 12 runners who lost a combined weight of 1,200+ pounds as they run a Ragnar Relay in Key West. Producer Jennifer leads off the conversation, telling how her running and weight-loss journey started with a vow to run “a 5-mile marathon” and why this slightly misguided intention was her $100 “action step.” Jen, a mom of a special-needs son, shares how running one mile nonstop for the first time shattered all her self-constrained limits about herself—and how now she’s training for her second New York City Marathon. Find out what she “1000% recommends” to change your mindset toward a race. (Apologies in advance: Jen has several coughing jags during the show; she was getting over a cold.) Next up is Katie “Runs for Cookies” Foster, who walks through how a bike riding experience morphed her into a runner. Katie shares details of the lower-body... Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 15 of the Agriculture Proud podcast brings a brief review of my Team Beef story, how I came to be involved in the program and tips for those who want to join in. You can find out more about Team Beef programs in your state, by checking with your Beef Council or joining the Team Beef USA page on Facebook. For those of you in Montana, sign up for our awesome Team Beef Montana! And of course, I explain more about what the program is in this week's podcast. You should definitely check out my previous posts about Team Beef on the blog. You'll see quite a few posts about the Montana Running Ranchers. This is a 12-member relay team I'm part of, primarily consisting of ranchers or those of us working with ranchers. Each year we participate in a 200-mile Ragnar Relay, which is a great opportunity to connect with thousands of other runners while sharing a great message about beef and ranching. This year we're headed to Hawaii, October 14-15. Learn more about this event and how you can sponsor us on the Montana Running Ranchers' Fundraising site. In the podcast, I also mentioned the 30-day Protein Challenge as a great opportunity to evaluate what you're eating and as a guide that helped me get back on track eating enough with balance as I've ramped up my mileage. Find more on my experience with the Protein Challenge in a previous post. Here's a link to the MyFitnessPal app mentioned to track my food each day. Give this week's episode a listen and let me know what you think. I'm excited to share a piece of what has made running with Team Beef special. Hopefully, this will be the start of several Team Beef episodes where I can highlight a member in each state. I hope you enjoy this episode of the Agriculture Proud podcast. Even though this podcast starts out seeming like it should be called “Another Mother Swimmer,” eventually Sarah and Dimity turn to talking about running. After briefly recounting a few of their own 2014 races, the gals let other mother runners do the talking: more than a dozen women call in to share their most memorable race moments of the year. From first 10Ks, half-marathons, and marathons to encounters with a snake during a duathlon, the stories cover the gamut. While there are many laughs, you should have a box of tissues handy as many of the tales are moving. Along the way, Dimity and Sarah debate whether one gal pukes or poops roadside during a Ragnar Relay, and... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The overnight relay race is one of the most memorable events a runner can participate in. Besides having fun, one of the most important things to plan for is your nutrition. Find out how to prepare for a Ragnar relay, what to eat during and the importance of recovering after each of your legs.
Fresh of running 205 miles (with 10 other bada** mother runners!), Dimity and Sarah tell the tale of their Ragnar Relay from San Francisco to Napa Valley. They are joined by a teammate from each of their vans, Kelly and Melissa. Kelly hits the nail on the head when she describes the 38-hour relay race as, "a sleepover with my best friends I'd never met before." During this hour-long podcast, find out what a Honeybucket is - and why Kelly played Candy Crush in one. Then learn why the gals in the team's second van quickly adopted the Minions' motto of, "I was born to be awesome, not perfect." And hear how Sarah's team saved her on a brutal 11.4 section mile of the race. Also, if you haven't yet taken our quick mother runner survey, please follow this link to take it. At most it'll take 10 minutes of your time, and you can opt out of some questions... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Sarah and Dimity talk about nothing—doing nothing, that is. Rest is a crucial part of an exercise program, whether it’s a rest day during a training plan; recovering properly after a race; not overdoing it on “easy” days; or getting enough sleep. The gals cover all these forms of rest as they crack each other up. This podcast also reveals such personal details about Dimity as her family dinner routine, her bedtime, and her astrological sign. This is a repeat podcast as the mother runners are running from San Francisco to Napa Valley in the Ragnar Relay. Oh, the irony of them talking about sleeping and resting when they’re coping about 2 hours of shut-eye in the past 24 hours! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
