We spoke to Ashlan, an Executive officer and soon-to-be president of Cambridge RAG, who spoke to us about organising virtual events and the incredible ways that the Cambridge community were helping others while also struggling themselves. Next, we spoke to fellow fresher Colin about love, lockdown and living back with your family. He discussed his experiences maintaining a new relationship over the term, as well as the return to sharing a study space and his excitement to cook with friends once again... Finally, we round off by chatting to Zara, a Homerton student who was unfortunately denied the chance to return to Cambridge on mental health grounds, and how she found the term in a space she did not plan to be in... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Send in a voice message for next week's episode: https://anchor.fm/switchboard/message --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/switchboard/message

Content note: This episode contains mentions of sexual assault, harassment, and abuse. Nine months after the investigation into the mishandling of sexual assault complaints by senior members of college staff at Trinity Hall was published, the hosts ask, has anything changed? (0:38). Switchboard talks to an anonymous student from Homerton college about the recent allegations of mishandled sexual misconduct and disciplinary complaints. (1:10). Journalists Ella Hill and Chris Cook from the media company Tortoise, who originally broke the story of Trinity Hall’s sexual assault allegations mishandling, discuss how they came to cover the story, and Cambridge’s inadequacy of dealing with complaints compared to other universities. (9:05). The hosts talk to Marina McCready and Antonia Harrison, the founders of the Cambridge Loud and Clear society, about what their society is doing to create a zero-tolerance policy against sexual misconduct in the university, and why college culture has led to mishandling of claims. (14:22). Student university counsellor Freddie Poser talks to Switchboard about his manifesto, which pushes for a centralized sexual harassment reporting procedure, why he believes it’s necessary, and the obstacles in the way of such change. (21:40). Finally, the hosts talk to Chris Down, investigator at Office of Student Content, Complaints and Appeals about the procedure of dealing with reports of sexual misconduct, and how the Coronavirus pandemic is preventing students coming forward. Full episode info and Show Notes - www.wearelookingsideways.com I welcomed the great Nick Jensen onto the show for episode 094. Nick is a skateboarder and artist from London who has been a pivotal part of the UK scene for at least 15 years now. He occupies a really particular place in the UK skateboarding firmament - as a street skater of global renown and influence, and also as somebody with a unique approach to creativity and skateboarding. I’ve been intrigued by Nick’s take on skateboarding for a few years, particularly his video parts or the work his does through Isle Skateboards. There’s always a considered aesthetic at play, and I was interested in how Nick transfers this vision between the different disciplines he’s dedicated his life to. So I headed over to his studio in Homerton, to sit down and discuss the whole thing. As regular listeners to the show will know, I’m pretty interested in that whole area of creativity works, where ideas come from, and how you can still that voice of self doubt in your head to give yourself permission to do the work you’re trying to do. So that's what we chatted about. The result is a super involved conversation about the mechanics of creativity, and the challenges involved in trying to live a creatively fulfilling life. Really enjoyed meeting Nick and getting such an insight into his life and work, hope you enjoy this one. Thanks to Matt Ward for the theme tune, and to my editor Fina Charleson.

We long to be, under the sea, in the Octopuses garden in the shade. Hi everyone, wow, apparently Boeing are now making submarines, that’s right, subs! We start off with the news that Boeing is to supply 4 large unmanned submarines with a very large payload to the US navy. We would rather use them for science and building an underwater habitat, but hey, this means the tech needed is becoming a reality. Trust me, this is a cool topic to check out. Then we look at unions in the gaming industry and discuss what that could mean. Not everyone will be a fan, but if it helps protect people from overwork and burnout then it is worth considering as the owners and management of a lot of the software developers are only interested in themselves. Then DJ has news that Marvel is poaching another character and ruining it, Conan the Barbarian is now going to be a Marvel character in the new Marvel Suicide Squad, oops, erm, we mean Savage Avengers. Sorry for the confusion there, but it is easy to understand the confusion when it appears that once again Marvel is presenting content that is so similar to DC. Then we have our games currently played, and the plethora of shout outs for your enjoyment. We hope you enjoy and if you think of anything we should cover (other than the DJ in gaffer tape) let us know, until next week, see ya.EPISODE NOTES:Extra Large Unmanned Submarines - https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/navy-ships/a26344025/navy-extra-large-unmanned-submarines-boeing/?fbclid=IwAR3bKUe869x4urVpp3dMSv7QfYXdkgzmsN0QqzbVVWTgUh3aKr5HlOfE5dsUnions in the Games Industry- https://variety.com/2019/gaming/news/game-workers-unite-fire-bobby-kotick-1203139767/- https://www.kotaku.com.au/2019/02/an-open-letter-to-game-developers-from-americas-largest-labour-organisation/Savage Avengers - https://comicbook.com/marvel/2019/02/14/conan-barbarian-savage-avengers-marvel-gerry-duggan-mike-deodato/Games currently playingBuck – Tentlan – www.tentlan.com/ Professor – Tetris 99 - https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/tetris-99-switchDJ – Apex Legends - https://www.ea.com/games/apex-legendsOther Topics DiscussedYellow Submarine (Beatles Song) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Submarine_(song)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2uTFF_3MaATomahawk Missile - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomahawk_(missile)A wild Orca attacked a diver - http://www.takepart.com/article/2014/02/24/did-wild-orca-really-just-attack-diver-new-zealand/United States ship naming conventions- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_ship_naming_conventionsNintendo CEO Satoru Iwata takes a 50% pay cut - https://www.wired.com/2011/07/nintendo-satoru-iwata-pay-cut/Japanese Airlines CEO pays himself less than the pilots and takes a bus to work- https://boingboing.net/2011/02/25/japan-airlines-ceo-p.html- https://www.cbsnews.com/news/japan-airline-boss-sets-exec-example/The Hand (fictional supervillain organization)- https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Hand_(Earth-616)Adelaide pilot leaves a message on flight radar- https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-02-20/bored-adelaide-pilot-leaves-message-on-flight-radar/10829262Kissing Sailor statue vandalised - https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/02/20/kissing-sailor-statue-graffitied-metoo-death-george-mendonsa/Hugh Jackman & Sir Patrick Stewart share Guinness World Records - https://www.cnet.com/news/hugh-jackman-patrick-stewart-share-guinness-world-record-for-xmen-roles/Shoutouts19 Feb 1878 - Thomas Alva Edison patents the gramophone (phonograph), the first device to both record sound and play it back. This KERB Life podcast lifts the biodegradable lid on the London vegan movement in the midst of a plant-powered revolution - on the streets with KERB, across the capital and now in the shopping basket. Whether it’s the record 160,000 who pledged to stay away from the animal foods for a month during ‘Veganuary’, Tesco reporting a 40% increase in demand for vegan products, or that joke about vegans - we’ve all heard about veganism this year. And ever more are changing their eating habits as a result, citing animal welfare, environmental fears and their own waistlines as motivation. In this episode, reporter Robin Leeburn joins the leading lights of the London vegan scene, from KERB’s leading food traders to Vevolution’s thought leadership events and markets run by social media influencer Fat Gay Vegan and Vegan Nights, drawing young Londoners to the most switched-on of joints: a meat-free one. We talk trends with Meriel Armitage of Club Mexicana, whose new spot at the Spread Eagle in Homerton is bringing conscious crowds flocking; innovation with Biff Burrows of Biff’s Jack Shack, where the ‘chick’n’ wings and jackfruit burgers have helped open vegan menus to fast food junkies; plus business and investment with Grace Regan of Spicebox, who secured £450,000 to grow her plant-based catering co. So with investors looking to cash in, is the vegan movement an unstoppable force?. Cast a glance across the pond, and the tens of millions of venture capital dollars poured into the likes of vegan burger startup Impossible Burger and it might seem so. Yet it’ll take a lot to wean many of us humans off our taste for flesh. Taking the debate form the other side, we talk food culture, sustainability and consumer choices with committed omnivore Cristiano Meneghin, founder of KERB mainstay Tongue ‘n Cheek and its famous Heartbreaker burger. Plus we go right to the source, venturing to Suffolk pig farmers Dingley Dell Pork to hear about animal welfare and environmental sustainability and ask if the meat industry is worried about the coming vegan force. So what do you choose? Whether you join the vegan revolution or indulge your carnivorous desires, it’s time to start considering our values when it comes to what we eat...
