In 2020 a black 15 year old schoolgirl, known as Child Q, was strip-searched by police while on her period after being wrongly suspected of carrying cannabis. A safeguarding report on the incident concluded it was unjustified and racism was "likely" to have been a factor. New data published by the Children's Commissioner has found what she calls a “concerning” number of children have been strip-searched by the Metropolitan Police without an appropriate adult present. BBC reporter Celestina Olulode joins Jessica to talk us through this data and we also hear from Jacqueline Courtenay, a mother from North London who organised a rally about this issue. Following the launch of the Women's Health Strategy we speak to the new chief executive of NICE - the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. The agency makes recommendations to the NHS in England and Wales on medicines treatments and procedures. Dr Sam Roberts took up the post in February 2022. Before joining Nice, she was Managing Director of Health and Care at Legal and General but began her career in clinical practise and spent some time working as a junior doctor in a London hospital.

The Metropolitan Police has been handcuffed into ‘special measures' by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary after a series of damaging scandals and “systemic failings” in the force's work.It means the Met will now be under intense administrative scrutiny by the watchdog. The announcement follows outrage over awful incidents that included the rape and murder of Sarah Everard shattering public confidence, the failure to stop serial killer Stephen Port, the strip search of a black schoolgirl, Child Q, as well as not logging 69,000 crimes yearly.Crime in the capital is up over 10 per cent, including a year-on-year 8.5 per cent rise in violence against the person — almost 250,000 crimes — sexual offences up 26 per cent and knife crime up five per cent, although homicide decreased by 10 per cent and youth homicide is down by a third. How can the capital's famous constabulary redeem its reputation and restore confidence among Londoners? To examine the latest on the scandal inside Britain's most famous police force, The Leader is joined by the Standard's City Hall Editor Ross Lydall. Why are a disproportionate number of black children being strip searched? File on 4 hears from teenagers taken in for a ‘strippy' so often, it's become part of life. The strip search of ‘Child Q', a fifteen year old black girl in a London school, was headline news, sparking outrage and official inquiries. Her teachers claimed she smelled of cannabis, but no drugs were ever found. A safeguarding report said racism a likely influencing factor in Child Q's ordeal. The Metropolitan police admitted the strip search should never have happened. But for some black girls and boys, humiliating – and sometimes unlawful – strip searches are nothing new. File on 4 hears from young people who've been strip searched so often they've lost count – in their bedrooms, in children's homes, and in the back of police vans. We know children from ethnic minorities are being disproportionately strip searched. File on 4 can reveal that in the last five years, on average fifty children a week were strip searched in England and Wales - a disproportionate number of them from ethnic minorities. School should be about play, fulfilment and learning. But it is also a place of surveillance, discipline and discrimination. Activist scholar Remi Joseph-Salisbury has researched policing, racism and education in the UK. He tells Rosie and Alexis what happens when policing enters the classroom, its impact on students and teachers of colour, and the need for wholesale reform – including a truly anti-racist curriculum.Plus: how can we break the “school-to-prison” pipeline? What is Critical Race Theory and why has it prompted a backlash? What does it mean to really receive “an education”? And what's the harm in the trope of the “inspirational super teacher”, as found in films from Sister Act to Dead Poets Society? This episode was recorded prior to news being made public of the experience of the pupil known as “Child Q”, reported in mid-March 2022. In this episode  Nadia, Fran and Eugene sit down to reflect on the case of 'Child Q'. 'Child Q' was 15 years old when she was subjected to a strip search by police officers because a teacher in her school smelt cannabis on her. Despite searching her and her items, the police were still called. The strip search took place without knowledge of the child's parents and without any appropriate adult present. Reports on this incident found no reasonable justification for this child to be stripped searched and states that race was a factor in this approach to policing. The aftermath of this incident and subsequent inquiry have caused a further loss of faith in the police and questions about how we safeguard children. Tune in to hear our thoughts and reflections on what is a horrific case of abuse by those positioned to protect. If you  enjoy this episode then please share with your friends, leave a review and follow The Social Matters Podcast on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. There's been outrage over the way a 15-year-old black girl, known as Child Q, was strip-searched by police while she was at school. A report on what happened says the search was unjustified and it's likely that racism played a part. We speak to the most senior black female police officer in the UK, Commander Dr Alison Heydari, BBC reporter Celestina Olulode who's been following the story, and Ebinehita Iyere who's the founder of Milk Honey Bees, which supports young vulnerable girls. A Boeing 737 operated by China Eastern Airlines crashed in southern China with 133 people aboard.  Russia moves into the Ukrainian seaport city Mariupol.  LeBron James moves into 2nd place in NBA All-Time scoring. In Climate: (6:37) In the continuation of the slow death of civilisation at the hands of ourselves, apparently the Arctic & Antarctic suffered 'extraordinary' levels of heating, which I'm sure will raise no alarms to the powers that be.In Education: (20:28) We return to the lives of teenagers, specifically teenage girls and the genuine epidemic of girls with mental health issues. In Race & Society: (35:59) The story of Child Q, a girl who was strip-searched by police in school, has caused people to protest and even school kids walking out of school in defiance. I'm just wondering what kind of power trip you need to have to traumatise a girl in this way.Lastly, in Tech: (46:36) The rise (rebirth?) of 'Dumbphones' - built in the essence of pre-smartphone mobiles - has given people a place to go if they're sick of the worst parts of having a smartphone. Ketanji Brown Jackson is the latest nominee for the US Supreme Court. Her confirmation hearing is ongoing so we compare how that's going with Amy Coney Barrett's and Brett Kavanaugh's and the additional poise that seems to be required. In royal news, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (Wills & Kate) are on a tour of the Caribbean and are being challenged by protests about their visit. Is it time to ditch the concept of The Commonwealth, and what is the difference between 'slavery' and 'human trafficking'? Humans have a history of being selective in what they choose to see. We look at the acceptance of refugees from Ukraine compared to other war-torn areas of the world and the cosying up to problematic regimes because they have oil. Similarly how, in the UK, teachers, police officers and society looked the other way whilst Child Q was strip searched at school.

The recent resignation of DUP First Minister, Paul Givan, from Stormont last month, has left people in Northern Ireland without a properly functioning government. On top of that, an election is coming - one that could bring massive political change if recent polls are to be believed. Leading unionist and DUP MLA Diane Dodds joins Emma on the programme to discuss Brexit, the Northern Ireland protocol and cooperation in Stormont. A damning new report has revealed how a black schoolgirl was strip searched by the Metropolitan Police while on her period after being wrongly suspected of carrying cannabis. The review conducted by City & Hackney Safeguarding Children Partnership took place without another adult present at the girl's secondary school in Hackney in 2020. The report states that during the search the girls "intimate body parts" were exposed and she was made to take off her sanitary towel. Emma speaks to Antoinette Bramble, Hackney's Deputy Mayor and cabinet member for children's services and Shabnam Chaudri, a former Detective Superintendent at the Metropolitan Police. Charlotte Mendelson's new books features the Hanrahans a big, arty family living in their bohemian North London home. Ray and Lucia are both artists, she has surrendered her career for his and their grown-up children seem dazzled by their outrageous, talented father. But, things are not as they seem and family secrets are bubbling under the surface. Charlotte joins Emma. Even in the face of war, food has a special power in bringing people together. Russian Chef Alissa Timoshkina and Ukrainian Chef Olia Hercules are best friends who have joined forces to set up Cook for Ukraine, a culinary campaign raising funds to support the humanitarian effort in Ukraine. They are encouraging people to celebrate Ukrainian and Eastern European culture by cooking traditional food. You asked; I answered: How do I get my spouse to understand my ADHD? How do I help my partner understand our ADHD child?   ADHD is a family affair! It doesn't only affect the person who has it. The entire family is hurt by this neurological disorder.   That means that it can also be a huge point of contention in a family.   But how can we get a neurotypical person to understand what it is like inside our brains? Are there books they can read or videos they can watch to learn about ADHD? What can they do to be better partners to us? Don't they get that we're not just lazy???   Listen in and I'll give you my 2 cents on the topic.   @drbeckyatgoodinside @drannlouise.lockhart   Click here for the Show notes and transcription.    Sign up for class now: Learn how to manage your daily life with productivity skills meant for ADHD moms.
