emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Michaela Coel twice, originally episode 129 from 2016-12-14, and episode 238 from 2018-11-07. Below are the original writeups for context - enjoy this double feature look back in to the past with Michaela!–––––––––––––––––––––––––Part 1:From her early days knocking around Tower Hamlets in a pentecostal upbringing, and how a psalm triggered her interests in poetry, Michaela gets deep into what added up to her present day self, as a multi-talented and well respected TV heavy hitter - from her take on reading and books in general, to spirituality and where she's at with it all now, drama school, reality TV, Uber and its complex personal social code of conduct, how she was discovered on stage, right through to where we find her now as star of 'Aliens', 'Chewing Gum' (and writer of, of course) and 'Black Mirror'... A perfect and full on satisfying listen so go on and get on that immediately!Part 2:What exactly HASN'T she been doing since she was last on? Good lord… Michaela is unquestionably smashing it right now (and has been for a minute), starring in two Black Mirror episodes, feature film Been So Long, BBC drama Black Earth Rising and a lil' indie grindhouse flick called Star Wars: The Last Jedi, no biggie. We can only dream of what she'll be unveiling when we hopefully see her next time on here! A bunch of awesome ground is covered of course, in not that long, including her humble but confident, responsive social media outlook, carving her own paths growing up, the intentions behind any given script, not wasting time on things that don't mean much to you, the hit series Black Earth Rising and the much loved director, heroes and villains, learning about Africa and all the education that came with Black Earth Rising, TV license and the value of it, John Goodman, handling heavier scenes and TONS tons more!

The English is an epic chase Western, from award-winning writer and director Hugo Blick (The Honourable Woman, Black Earth Rising, The Shadow Line). The series takes the core themes of identity and revenge to tell a uniquely compelling parable on race, power, and love. An aristocratic Englishwoman, Lady Cornelia Locke (Blunt), and a Pawnee ex-cavalry scout, Eli Whipp (Spencer), come together in 1890 middle America to cross a violent landscape built on dreams and blood. Both of them have a clear sense of their destiny, but neither is aware that it is rooted in a shared past. They must face increasingly terrifying obstacles that will test them to their limits, physically and psychologically. But as each obstacle is overcome, it draws them closer to their ultimate destination—the new town of Hoxem, Wyoming. It is here, after an investigation by the local sheriff Robert Marshall (Stephen Rea, The Shadow Line) and young widow Martha Myers (Valerie Pachner, A Hidden Life) into a series of bizarre and macabre unsolved murders, that the full extent of their intertwined history will be truly understood, and they will come face-to-face with the future they must live. The series' ensemble cast includes Rafe Spall (The Salisbury Poisonings), Tom Hughes (A Discovery of Witches), Toby Jones (Marvellous), and Ciarán Hinds (The Terror).

The one and only Tamara Tunie joins me in The Locher Room to discuss her upcoming starring role in A Journal for Jordan directed by Denzel Washington opening on Christmas Day. Ms. Tunie is also set to narrate a documentary about the domestic assault on the Capitol complex. Preserving Democracy: Pursuing a More Perfect Union is a two-hour doc, which will air on January 6, 2022 on PBS. She can currently be seen in Netflix's Cowboy Bebop.Ms. Tunie has starred for 18 seasons as Medical Examiner Dr. Melinda Warner in Wolf Films/Universal Media Studio's top-rated series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” She starred as Marie Van Der Veen, the matriarch and the “moral fiber” of a Native American tribe, on Sundance TV's THE RED ROAD. The role is a marked departure from the sophisticated and powerful women she is known for portraying. Ms. Tunie, also, starred in AMC's series DIETLAND and the BBC/Netflix political drama Black Earth Rising. Ms. Tunie has had other memorable roles on television, most notably as the longstanding character Jessica Griffin on the CBS Daytime Drama “As The World Turns,” for which she received two NAACP Image Award nominations and two Soap Opera Digest award nominations. She also appeared in the highly visible role of Alberta Green in Season One of the hit series “24”, as well as recurring roles and guest appearances on “Almost Family” “Emergence”, “Better Call Saul”, “Blue Bloods, “Billions”, “Alpha House”, “Elementary” “Survivor's Remorse”, “Zoo”, "The Good Wife”, “Law and Order,” “Sex and the City,” and “NYPD Blue”, to name a handful. In film, Ms. Tunie worked with legendary director Robert Zemekis, opposite Denzel Washington in “FLIGHT”, and has worked with several other of the most respected directors of the screen, including Taylor Hackford, Brian De Palma, Mimi Leder, Harold Becker and Oliver Stone. Jackson on both “Eve's Bayou” and “The Caveman's Valentine.” Ms. Tunie was also featured in some wonderful “Indies”, like “Irreplaceable You”, “Fall to Rise” and “Bad Vegan”.Ms. Tunie is a founding member of Black Theatre United.Original Airdate: 12/17/2021
Stuck on NetflixWhat do a post-apocalyptic fairy tale, a biopic of a famous fashion designer, and a creepy story of a woman trapped in a cryogenic chamber have in common? They're all on Netflix! Just by chance, almost everything Steve and Kate discuss is on the streaming giant, from the family-friendly adventures of a deer boy ("Sweet Tooth") to Ewan McGregor as the designer "Halston" to the French thriller "Oxygen." The whodunnit documentary of an unsolved art heist ("This Is a Robbery") and a serious drama about a survivor of the Rwandan genocide confronting her past ("Black Earth Rising") are too.Books: From Nazis to GhostsKate and Steve both read novels about Nazis—Kate, "In Search of a Name," about a woman investigating whether her great uncle was a hero or a villain during World War II, and Steve, "Ratlines," in which a British officer investigates a series of murders of ex-Nazis in 1960s Ireland. But then Kate travels into Leigh Bardugo's fantasy world the Grishaverse with "The Language of Thorns" and "The Lives of the Saints." Steve gets all noir and ghosty with John Connolly's supernatural-themed mysteries featuring private eye Charlie "Bird" Parker.Popahallics #40 PlaylistOur latest playlist is sweet on the "Sweet Tooth" soundtrack, but we've also got great music from U2, the Pogues, Hozier, the White Buffalo and more. Take the playlist for a spin here.
Adrienne, Claire, Enja, Hazel, Natalie, Sabrina, and Sehrish talk about Snowpiercer (the series), I May Destroy You and Black Earth Rising. Questions discussed: 1. Are there any previous conceptions/perspectives you had that you feel were changed after watching these shows? 2. How diverse were the representations of people of color? Do you feel that the media perpetuated any harmful stereotypes? 3. These shows were quite heavy and covered some bleak subject material. Do you think that these depictions were too heavy, or was it warranted given the subjects being discussed? What are the advantages or disadvantages of shows that are more depressing or violent? Listen and enjoy! To receive the latest content, subscribe on wherever you listen to podcasts and follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @_introspectives. Martin Phipps is the featured guest on this Score to Screen podcast. The Crown: Season Three composer reveals how he captured the emotions of each character to allow the audience to lean more into the drama. Listen to Phipps discuss his experience working alongside show creator Peter Morgan and his team of directors. The third season of The Crown sees a new guard sweep into Downing Street, as Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) and her family struggle to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing Britain. From cold-war paranoia, through to the jet-set and the space age – the exuberance of the 1960s and the long hangover of the 1970s – Elizabeth and the Royals must adapt to a new, more liberated, but also more turbulent world. Written by Peter Morgan, The Crown also stars Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Tobias Menzies as The Duke of Edinburgh, Josh O'Connor as Prince Charles, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, Ben Daniels as Lord Snowdon, Jason Watkins as Prime Minister Harold Wilson and Charles Dance as Lord Mountbatten. Coming from a musical background, Martin studied drama at Manchester University. Fortunately for the acting profession, he decided to concentrate his energies on writing music. Since scoring his first TV drama, Eureka Street (2002), he has won 2 BAFTAs and 5 Ivor Novello Awards, and gone on to write music for many of the most interesting series of recent years, including the BBC's War and Peace, Hugo Blick's Black Earth Rising, Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror. Martin's credits include the Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds movie Woman In Gold (scored with Hans Zimmer), Fox Searchlight's The Aftermath, starring Keira Knightley and Alexander Skarsgård, Harry Brown and Brighton Rock. The Score to Screen podcast series is produced and hosted by Crossover Media's Max Horowitz. Listen to The Crown: Season Three Soundtrack here and get the vinyl here. It's time for the second episode of You Can't Take Our Youth Away - the second part of the Black Lives Matter podcast miniseries. Darius chats to Yasmin Sidhwa, the Artistic Director of Mandala Theatre Company, and two of the amazing young people she works with: Akasha Daley (her daughter) and Luis Riberio. Akasha studies in Germany and she is a dancer and choreographer, she uses her gift for physical theatre to add more depth to characters. Luis also started off as a dancer and then got into theatre and has never looked back. They discuss the pain of seeing black trauma on social media every day, the reduction in protest news coverage, the necessity to amplify black stories especially black women and black trans people and so much more. They also give some good suggestions of things to watch on Netflix such as Dear White People, 13th and Black Earth Rising. With racial equity issues top of mind, we speak with educator Erin Jones. In 2016, she came within a point of winning the race for the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and was the first black woman candidate to run for statewide office. We talk about a series of online courses for adults and children on racial equity that Erin is teaching during the pandemic. And we get her thoughts on how we can be engaging in the difficult but necessary conversations we need to have in this country on race. Bart studied theatre design at Rose Bruford whilst selling vintage clothing to support his education. He first became aware of Angels during this time and realised that he could make a career by combining his love of men’s clothing and storytelling, leading him to apply for a trainee position.Over a six-year period he learnt all there was to know about being an in-house costumier as well as a deep understanding of the history of men’s clothing. During this time he also had the advantage of working with the best costume teams around, thereby forging good contacts and links with the freelance industry. When he left Angels, he spent 11 years working alongside a wide variety of designers and their teams on productions including:Atonement; The Theory of Everything; One Day; RocknRolla; Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Night Manager.Three years ago, he began to work on his own projects as costume designer. He has designed two feature films Churchill and My Name is Lenny and TV work including the BBC/Netflix eight-part series Black Earth Rising and the aforementioned White Lines.https://bartholomewcariss.com/https://www.angelsbehindtheseams.com/

In This Episode: I will be celebrating Black History Month with a difference. Instead of concentrating on the history of Africans after slavery, I would take you straight to Africa, it’s people and entertainment. I want you to experience the rich culture of our people, as well as some great movies and series that educate you about Africa. As I celebrate my 50th episode, I would love to share the greatness of Africa and her children. We are rising together as a people and the world is paying attention. Our audience knows the drill, so let's get into this, shall we? The podcast is simply called The Grindhouse amd it's powered by the Afronerd Radio machine. It airs religiously every Sunday at 6pm eastern LIVE. Listen to our ever present and prescient podcasting brain trust as they wax poetic about these new topics: we give our impressions of new film releases-Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman and The Meg with Jason Statham; for the umpteenth time, news that Sierre Leonean/Ghanaian-British actor, Idris Elba might be tapped to portray James Bond went viral and then was quickly debunked......again; noted director, Antoine Fuqua hot off the heels of his Equalizer sequel is purportedly in talks to direct an unknown MCU property; Marvel may be making an appeal to Disney to rehire GOTG director, James Gunn (who else has plans to usher in Marvel Cosmic); is Star Trek 4 still a go if negotiations with Chrises Pine and Hemsworth are breaking down? And with a boatload of Star Trek product on the horizon is ST4 needed? (unless this Tarantino's version); more trailer releases-including The Deuce S2 and Black Earth Rising; Cyborg news-both on TV (Doom Patrol) and film....maybe; is Sony looking for their own FOX parachute via their Marvel rebranding-Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters (SUMC); And lastly, what about Oscar's new popular film category (what...the other films are unpopular?).
