Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 24th January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. NISSAN UPDATES LEAF SOFTWARE FOR ALL AFTER #RAPIDGATE First up a public service announcement, following all of Nissans troubles over the last 12months. We first heard about a software fix from Bjorn Nyland who tested a newer LEAF 40, and it took a higher charge speed whilst being pretty hot. He raised questions over the long term health of the battery, but it was an anecdotal story of someone contacting their dealer for the fix, and being turned away which concerned me. If I were Nissan I would be on a PR offensive to superserve my customers. Well now we have more details on the story thanks to Electrive.com: "Nissan is now offering a software update for Leaf models with a 40 kWh battery to correct the significant reduction of the DC charging power that occurred under the so-called Rapidgate." says an article today: "A Nissan spokesman told electrive that they would offer the for all Leaf models produced between 8 December 2017 and 9 May 2018. Electric vehicles with a later production date already have the current software version." I was never able to test it, so i never commented on it at the time, despite a fair few complaints and people saying I was ignoring it because I was in Nissan's pocket. I like to think of it as not defaming a company for something I had no personal proof over, but hey, you feel free to get yourself sued. However as time went on there was a general reluctance from Nissan to hold their hands up and say it was a fault, but instead they recognised the issue and it was expected behiviour. However Electrive did test it themselves: "Our editors put this to the test and could confirm the problem. According to the Japanese carmaker, the Leaf has “safety precautions” to protect the battery during repeated rapid charging processes. These are important for the service life of the powerpack, not least due to a lack of thermal management." And of course the Nissan warranty is unaffected. Is that good enough, LEAF drivers? What else would Nissan realistically do? Should the LEAF be thought of a town car, with very occasional long drives, if this problem rears up on the 62kWh car? And if so, why carry around such a heavy battery on a town car, when a lighter car would be more efficient? https://www.electrive.com/2019/01/22/nissan-updates-leaf-software-after-rapidgate/ TOYOTA AND PANASONIC CONFIRM JV FOR EV BATTERIES "Toyota Motor Corp and Panasonic Corp said on Tuesday they will launch a joint venture next year to make electric vehicle (EV) batteries, leveraging the heft of one of the world’s largest automakers and battery makers to expand their EV push." confirmed Reurters today: "Toyota will own 51 percent of the joint venture, and Panasonic the rest, the two companies said in a joint statement, confirming previous reports." https://www.reuters.com/article/toyota-panasonic/toyota-panasonic-announce-jv-for-ev-batteries-idUST9N1CC01D PEUGEOT 2008 COMING AS A FULL EV "Peugeot will follow up the imminent launch of its new 208 supermini with a new 2008 crossover, due to be revealed in the autumn." reports Autocar: "The most significant change brought about by the new platform is that Peugeot will offer the 2008 as a fully electric model for the first time. Expected to be launched in early 2020, not long after the conventional petrol and diesel variants, the electric version follows on from the platform-sharing 208 and will adapt that car's electric motor and lithium ion battery pack. Details of the electric 2008's range and performance haven't yet been revealed." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-peugeot-2008-be-offered-all-electric-variant PEUGEOT WARNS UK DEALERS TO READY FOR EV REVOLUTION "Peugeot has told its UK dealer network to prepare themselves for the coming EV revolution. During its 2019 National Dealer Conference at the NEC in Birmingham, the carmaker spelled out how its sees the growth of EV adoption will change the face of dealership service required by consumers." according to today's report by Paul Myles for TU Automotive: "David Peel, managing director of Peugeot UK, told dealers to ‘be prepared’ for the energy transition especially with the brand committing to electrifying its entire product range over the next five years." https://www.tu-auto.com/peugeot-warns-uk-dealers-to-ready-for-ev-revolution/ TESLA SAYS IT RECEIVED BATTERY QUOTES FROM LISHEN BUT NO DEAL AGREED "Tesla Inc said on Tuesday it had received quotes from Tianjin Lishen to supply batteries for its new Shanghai electric car factory but had not signed any agreement with the Chinese firm." according to Business Report: "Reuters earlier on Tuesday reported, citing two sources with direct knowledge of the matter, that Tesla and Lishen had signed a preliminary agreement and were working on the details." https://www.iol.co.za/business-report/international/tesla-says-it-received-battery-quotes-from-lishen-but-no-deal-agreed-18905698 HONDA TEASES NEW EV PROTOTYPE AHEAD OF GENEVA DEBUT Yesterday I talked how the Honda Urban EV won the Readers Vote for the What Car? Car Of The Year Awards, despite still being a prototype. Well today, "Honda confirms the rumors about the world premiere of a new EV prototype at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. The Japanese manufacturer revealed a design sketch of the prototype and said that the production version will go on sale later this year." https://insideevs.com/honda-teases-new-ev-prototype/amp/ VW: SMALL ELECTRIC CARS MAY BE UNAFFORDABLE FOR SOME This is a strange story next. Let me give you basics and we'll work out what it means. "The move to electric vehicles will make cars significantly more expensive, meaning they may become unaffordable for people on low incomes in the future, the chairman of Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) said in an interview published on Sunday." according to Reuters. Hans-Dieter Poetsch told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper: "We have the clear goal of making electromobility accessible to a broad section of the population, that is to make it affordable. The current price level cannot stay the same if these cars are equipped with electric motors. Therefore, it will inevitably lead to significant price increases in the small car segment.” And then: "Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess warned that the European Union’s proposed emissions target for 2030 is too demanding and the resulting push to EVs could make motoring too expensive for some consumers." which was picked up by Automotive News Europe: "Diess said VW Group will be able to comply with the EU's average fleet carbon dioxide emissions of around 60 grams per km by 2030 by boosting sales of its full-electric cars to between 45 percent to 50 percent of the group's total volume. But he warned: "I am not sure how many customers could afford it." As examples, Diess said the retail price of a VW Up minicar that could rise in price by about 3,500 euros to 14,500 euros to be compliant with the 2030 emissions target. The price for the small Polo model could rise by 4,000 euros, he said." So this is where I'm at a loss. Europe has very stringent emissions rules coming in for 2030, it's based on the total fleet of cars you sell and it's CO2 they're measuring. VW say they're going to be an electgric leader and will be making enough EVs by then not be affected by the rules. The first point about EVs being more expensive than piston cars is something you can't comment on unless you have access to VW finances. But a 40kWh pack would add $4,000 dollars when prices come down to $100/kWh. So for a VW Up that size battery would be overkill. Maybe add $1,000 dollars for the motor and ancillaries, so you start at $5,000 and have to build the car on top of that. But this is by 2030 - and remember can't compare 100 year old piston technology to battery technology, in the last 10 years alone the cost of battery's has come down from roughly $1,000 to $150 per kWh. Imagine what tech will be like in 11 years! Remember CEO's don't say things like this for no reason, they have a game plan. And when you're so high up the food chain, pretty much every public comment you make will be politically driven to influence someone. As for the comment that emissions regulations will mean small cars get more expensive to meet those demands. But hang on, aren't we always being told VW will make so many EVs by 2030, the way I see it, that will easily offset the total fleet emissions. So sell a bunch of EVs and which allows you to keep selling the last few piston cars. Final thought – 11 years ago you had never heard of Tesla. The automotive industry relies on stability, and to them it’s natural to talk with certainty about 2030. At best it’s a projection, at worst it’s fantasy guesswork. Truth is, nobody knows what the car industry will be like 2030 and which incumbents have long since gone bust because they didn’t move to EV quick enough. https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-electric-vehicles/small-electric-cars-may-be-unaffordable-for-some-vw-chairman-to-newspaper-idUKKCN1PE0EJ https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vws-diess-warns-emissions-push-could-make-cars-too-expensive-some-consumers INNOGY EMOBILITY UK APPOINTS NISSAN’S KARL ANDERS AS MANAGING DIRECTOR "Former Nissan Fleet national EV manager Karl Anders has been appointed as managing director of innogy eMobility UK." says FleetNews: "Innogy eMobility UK acts as a technology and service provider with an eMobility hardware and software portfolio. The company is a supplier to several major automobile manufacturers and has already started the roll out for the Audi UK dealer network." https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/people-news/2019/01/22/innogy-emobility-uk-appoints-nissan-s-karl-anders-as-managing-director COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. FINAL THOUGHTS ON NEW LEAF Cost & Availability vs Bolt / Kia / Hyundai / Model 3 Battery - why use AESC? Production - 5000 for Europe TESLA WILL STOP SELLING MODEL S AND X CARS WITH 75KWH BATTERIES The Model S and X just got a whole lot more expensive, said the headlines today. Which might be if you look it a certain way. "Elon Musk has announced that his company will stop taking orders for the 75kWh versions of the Model S and Model X after January 13th. He didn't directly explain the move, but said "yes" when a Twitter user asked if Tesla was moving away from its longstanding use of battery capacity numbers to denote variants." reports Engadget: "If the starter Model S and X models disappeared with no rough equivalent in place, that would raise the starter prices by $15,000 or more, to $84,750 (from $66,750) and $87,950 (from $72,950) respectively." But why do that? Could it be they just weren't selling many of them? Would they prefer a base S & X buyer to buy a top spec'd Model 3 because they make more margin? Tesla are unquestionably better at making cars now. com say they have a possible answer: "The most logical reasoning for the discontinuation is that Tesla is taking down its 75 kWh pack line to upgrade to a cheaper/more efficient architecture that can handle the V3 Supercharger. Since the 100D’s are Tesla’s highest margin vehicles, Tesla will be able to decrease their cost substantially because Tesla no longer has to cover the lower margin 75D’s in its sales mix." writes Dan Zorilla. My thought: they need to update the S& X, both inside and out, plus under the skin. Carry on making 100kWh packs for now, and change some 18650 production at Giga to 2170. Then introduce a Standard Range and a Long Range S & X. The lines will be more efficient, Tesla will make a better margin, the cells will charge quicker and the largest pack size could go to something like 120 or 125kWh. Gigafactory plays a huge part in this, and you know my favourite topic is to bang on about the effect of Tesla Grohmann Automation! https://www.engadget.com/2019/01/09/tesla-to-stop-selling-75kwh-model-s-x/ https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-s-x-discontinuation-analysis/ VW IS SETTING UP ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING STATIONS IN CHINA "Volkswagen AG is setting up a network of fast-charging stations in China with local partners as part of its multibillion-dollar push to boost electric-vehicle sales in the world’s largest market, people familiar with the matter said." according to Bloomberg today: "Talks for the venture are near completion and it is scheduled to be set up in the first half of this year, the people said. SAIC Motor Corp., another VW partner, is ready to get on board, with more Chinese auto and battery makers expected to join in future, the people said." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-01-10/vw-is-said-to-set-up-china-venture-for-charging-electric-cars?utm_content=business&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&cmpid=socialflow-twitter-business&utm_medium=social TESLA’S GETS SOME LOVE FROM GERMAN AUTO EXECUTIVE According to Teslarati: "Gigafactory 1’s battery production capabilities...achieved an annualized run rate of 20 GWh last year .For BMW Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board Manfred Schoch, Tesla’s long-term play on electric car batteries was a strategic decision. In a recent interview with German publication Manager Magazin, the BMW executive remarked that Tesla’s high investments for Gigafactory 1 are well-spent. Schoch also praised Elon Musk’s decision to closely collaborate with Panasonic early on to produce batteries at a large scale." He said: "“Tesla controls the entire value chain; they understood electromobility. Our board members should finally deal more intensively with this gentleman, who should have been bankrupt by now. In the (auto) industry, too much is complained, and too much is declared impossible." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-ev-batteries-gigafactory-bmw-manfred-schoch/ GRAB SAYS 'RIGHT TIME' TO INTRODUCE ELECTRIC VEHICLES, SET TO ROLL OUT 200 HYUNDAI KONAS "Ride-hailing firm Grab is set to roll out 200 electric vehicles (EVs) into Singapore's streets progressively from Friday (Jan 11)." reports Channel News Asia: "Having purchased 200 Hyundai Kona 64 kWH electric cars, Grab will release an initial batch of 20 vehicles on Friday with the rest being introduced over the next few weeks, head of the company's car leasing service GrabRentals, Kau Yi Ming said in an interview with local media." https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/grab-says-right-time-to-introduce-electric-vehicles-set-to-roll-11105376 ELON MUSK SAYS NEW TESLA ROADSTER WILL FLY "Elon Musk released a new message “The new Roadster will actually do something like this” with an attached animation of a futuristic (“Back To The Future”) vehicle with some kind of rocket boosters" says Mark Kane over at InsideEVs.com. So it's 2019 now and time for race 2, in Africa and Marrakesh. At the first race there was rain in Saudi Arabia and confusion over how to race by the new rules, so it confused the pack a bit. This weekend we'll see who is real out ahead. We'll see the debut of former F1 star Pascal Wehrlein too. It's 8am Pacific, 11am Eastern and 4pm UK on Saturday. FORD SAYS FORMULA E AN OPTION FOR THE FUTURE Mark Rushbrook, global head of Ford Performance Motorsports, told Motorsport.com that FE was "still on the sheet of paper we are looking at" as it considers an entry into what he called "electrified motorsport". His comments come a year after Ford was engaged in high-level talks with FE and appeared close to signing up for the series. Rushbrook insisted that there is "still room" for Ford on the FE grid even though it will hit its 12-team, 24-car capacity with the arrival of Porsche in season six in 2019/20. The US manufacturer is evaluating its future in motorsport as it looks beyond its present commitment to the Ford GT programme, which is confirmed until the end of the 2018/19 WEC and the 2019 IMSA season. https://www.motorsport.com/formula-e/news/ford-entry-formula-e-possible/4321373/ HONDA DELAYS ITS FUN RETRO-LOOKING ALL-ELECTRIC VEHICLE TO 2020, REPORT SAYS A new report about the Honda Urban EV from Electrek says: "Honda’s first next-gen all-electric vehicle was supposed to go on sale this year, but the production has been pushed to “early 2020", the report claims that Honda is planning to show two iterations of the vehicle before starting production. They say that the Japanese automaker plans to unveil a new version of the concept at the Geneva auto show in March and then the production version at the Frankfurt show." https://electrek.co/2019/01/10/honda-delays-fun-retro-looking-all-electric-vehicle-2020/ FORD EUROPE WILL ELECTRIFY EVERY MODEL Ford says: "Every Ford nameplate from the all-new Ford Focus onwards will include an electrified option. This includes new nameplates and new versions of existing vehicles. From Fiesta to Transit, either a mild-hybrid, full-hybrid, plug-in hybrid or full battery electric option will be offered, delivering one of the most encompassing line-ups of electrified options for European customers." Tuesday 13th March 2018. INSIDE EVS WERE RIGHT ALL ALONG The original story was based on a strong, reliable source, but still when we first heard it reported plenty of people doubted it. However now Tesla has confirmed production did indeed shut down on the Model 3 line from February 20-24, in order to tweak the synchronisation of the robots. Tesla said: “Our Model 3 production plan includes periods of planned downtime in both Fremont and Gigafactory 1. These periods are used to improve automation and systematically address bottlenecks in order to increase production rates.” The battery pack assembley still seems to be causing headaches, the Panasonic cell production doesn’t seem to be the issue. Once that bottleneck is sorted I would expect to see a very rapid increase in production. By the end of June they want to be making 5,000 a week. INVESTING IN EVs “DUMB” Elon Musk made a surprise appearance at SXSW Interactive Sunday panel in Austin with a few choice words of advice for any budding entrepreneurs. Elon said investing in rockets and electric vehicles was “the dumbest things to do”. Musk also said he hunts for "things that don’t seem to be working that are important for our life and for the future to be good. If you were to do a risk-adjusted rate of return estimate on various industry opportunities, I would put building rockets and cars pretty much at the bottom of the list." Musk said he "gave basically both SpaceX and Tesla from the beginning probably less than 10% of (being) likely to succeed.” In the early days, he wouldn’t even let friends invest in SpaceX because he figured they would lose their money. SpaceX is alive by the skin of its teeth. So is Tesla. If things had just gone a little bit the other way, both companies would be dead.” https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2018/03/12/elon-musk-sxsw-rockets-and-electric-cars-dumbest-possible-business-ventures/416670002 CLEANING UP EV MILES Today here in the UK the diesel lobby grasped on a single stat, that of pure BEVs having a bad month of sales, so say it was the start of the end for electric cars. Truth is electrified vehicles are up 15% because plug in hybrids took up the slack. Monthly figures go up and down. As commentators and newspapers latched onto an easy story they started peddling the myth that EVs are dirty because they charge from the grid – this was a coordinated attack on electric cars from those feeding stories to the media. So let’s take a look at that claim because I spent a lot of time on Twitter correcting people. Most of that was about the energy people use to charge their cars. The most common error reported today was to compare emission at the tailpipe vs the lifetime emissions of an EV based on grid carbon and the battery production. But as an EV podcast listener you probably know the nuance anyway – where the battery is made is probably China or Asia which can have dirtier grids. Most places are decarbonising quickly though so it’s a moving target. Many of those who compare the carbon emission of EVs charged on gas and coal take the worldwide average, but an EV in the UK doesn’t pop over to coal heavy Australia to charge. Finally a common trick is to take a small city car and compare it to an EV knows like a Tesla Model S, again skewing results. The truth is, and the general consensus, is that EVs are 50-60% cleaner than fossil fuel cars when charged from the grid. Layer in those who charge at home from solar and it’s a no brainer, but remember what films like An Inconvenient Truth point out, the aim of those fighting for diesel and denying climate change isn’t to win the truth, it’s to create just enough uncertainty in the wider public to make them question it. https://www.euractiv.com/section/electric-cars/opinion/are-electric-vehicles-cleaner-the-evidence-points-firmly-in-one-direction HONDA URBAN EV DESIGNER Pistonheads.com talked to Iwaki-san, designer of the super cute Honda Urban EV which will enter production in 2019. Read the article I’ve linked to for more, but highlights are when he said: "With a battery EV, people typically expect that they're going to see something new, something unconventional. So it was difficult for us to kind of break through that mental barrier." "So far as the autonomous driving technologies are concerned, these technologies will not really have so much influence on interior design. However, the connectivity will have a larger influence because we are planning on using AI technology which means that the system can take over many of the operations. So the interior design will be much more simple, because we don't need all of those switches." "The importance of design holds for battery EVs, hybrids and combustion engined cars - it's always a priority. But the challenge was in the expectations people have of battery EVs: 'Ah, this is an EV, so it must look like this.' I wanted really to put it aside, so that's why we had a more rational approach to the battery EV design." https://www.pistonheads.com/news/features/hondas-urban-ev-designer-ph-meets/37690 BMW M BOSS SAYS IT’S A NOISY FUTURE With the newly announced BMW i4 joining the i3 and i8, plus the iX3 SUV coming, electrification is coming to the BMW fleet. The BMW M CEO Frank Van Meel told BMW Blog: “There have been so many changes regarding engine sound, with the change from naturally aspirated to turbocharged where you lose the air intake. Suddenly you had backfire and things like that. It just changed.” “And now these cars (EVs) have a completely different sound than current cars.” But like all new technologies, there are refinement levels involved that simply take some time. Take oil burners, for example. “Diesel cars first sounded like tractors and then they were improved and later you have Le Mans racing cars running on diesel that sounded pretty nice. Le Mans diesel later came into series production cars. So you can see there are always solutions.” “If you look at ‘Stars Wars’ pod races, that was completely artificial, and yet all the kids who watch the movie say that’s exactly how a pod should sound. That’s accepted. So with electric cars there will be sound also. I don’t know exactly what it will sound like, but we will find a solution as always. There will be artificial, or enhanced sounds. They will come to the mind as completely natural one day.” http://www.bmwblog.com/2018/03/12/bmw-m-boss-says-future-electric-vehicles-will-not-be-totally-silent/ Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. Gears and Beers: The Unashamedly Unprofessional Automotive Podcast
We're back for episode 36!It was Geneva International Motor Show this week, so we had much news to talk about, plus many arguments and tangents are to be found in this episode.Mitch has finally found an electric car that he likes, and the other guys hate it; the Honda Urban EV.We then talk about the Bugatti Chiron Sport, which eventuates into a debate as to what should be considered a 'supercar' and what should be considered a 'sports car'.Performax, a right hand drive conversion company, will be bringing the Ford F-250 Tuscany Black Ops to Australia. The price for which is $199,000 AUD.Then it's Joel's Motorcycle Minute, where he is given 1 minute to talk about his favourite topic; motorcycles. We then play 'What about this car', and this week it's the 2003 Volkswagen Beetle, which Matt concedes that he cannot put a positive spin on.Mitch then talks about Peugeot, their acquisition of Opel from General Motors, and a
Saturday 10th March 2018. BEST 7 EVS GENEVA According to Popular Mechanics: Polestar 1 - Two electric motors drive the rear wheels, and a turbo- and supercharged 2.0L I4 drives the front wheels Lagonda Vision - batteries in the floor and motors in the wheel hubs Volkswagen I.D. Vizzion - a peek into what autonomous cars will look like when they no longer come with steering wheels or pedals, controllable only by voice and gesture when driven “manually.” Steering wheels are here to stay for now though Honda Urban EV - windshield-spanning touchscreen cleans up the dashboard and replaces a myriad of switchgear and gauges, both modernist and utilitarian at once. Honda Sport EV - Honda claims the Sport EV to be a proper sports car because of its low centre of gravity, which is part design choice and part a result of the now-standard packaging of batteries in the floor. Renault EZ-GO - The EZ-GO is Renault's vision of the near-future's taxi cab, a fully autonomous glass box you hail from your phone or at one of its permanent depots dotted throughout cites. Get in through a front hatch and sit in U-shape. New Formula E Racer - Heading into its fifth season for 2018-2019, Formula E says goodbye to the first-generation and hello to the second-generation racer, which looks like the Batmobile. It'll be the first season in which drivers don't swap depleted cars for fresh ones halfway through races. The new Formula E car doubles battery capacity over the outgoing from 28 kWh to 54 kWh, giving it enough juice for an entire race. LEASE OR BUY AN EV? According to Nerdwallet, they say leasing is growing in popularity — now making up almost 30% of all new car sales. But when it comes to electric vehicles, 80% are leased, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Using research from ‘Swapalease’ here are their 5 reasons to lease and what I think of them. They say: “You can get tech upgrades faster. Year-to-year changes in conventional cars are often minimal. The technology going into EVs means each year sees more range, more performance, and more autopilot features.” I say wrong: OTA updates can keep your car current They say: “You avoid the steep depreciation. If you bought an electric car and decided to sell it even a year later, its value would have depreciated dramatically — “like a used bedsheet,” as one commenter wrote on car sale site Autotrader.” I say wrong: in the UK at least, used EV values increased last year They say: “Battery quirks aren’t your problem. Since the lithium ion batteries that power EVs are relatively new, there isn’t a lot of data on how long they last and how quickly they’ll stop holding a full charge.” I say wrong: EV batteries have incredibly low failure rates, and are often covered under very long warranties. They say: “you’ll get more incentives more often. Electric cars are incentive magnets. Federal and state governments seem to want to reward EV owners to support clean energy” I say wrong: Tax credits in the US are ending for some models. They say: “You can scoop up loyalty bonuses. Carmakers also offer both loyalty and conquest bonuses to try to retain customers or lure shoppers away from the competition.” I say wrong: I’ve never heard of any EV maker offering a loyalty bonus if you lease. There’s obviously the famous Tesla referral code which could bag you anything from free supercharging to a new Roadster. But what other EV does that? Have you ever heard of loyalty bonuses to lease an EV? Email me if so, hello@evnewsdaily.com Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
