They piggyback off this BYD discussion to also talk about the rumor that BYD will be entering the Canadian market which moves into a broader discussion on BYD and why they are the likeliest EV company to succeed long-term. Lei then moves into a discussion on how companies have begun to lay off staff at the tier 1s. The podcast ends with a deep dive on how the Rivian VW Group tie-up could lead to VW Group abandoning Cariad and a deeper discussion on how Stellantis and VW may have too many brands to manage. Tu also discusses the WSJ post about Tesla FSD in the US and how there's a lack of transparency in the US on whether or not it's causing the accidents that Tesla vehicles are involved in. Mary Ann, Haje and Kirsten are back on the mic for this week's episode, which was is jam-packed with deals, hot topics, and the latest dramaaaaaa in the tech world. For Deals of the Week, Haje wanted to chat about Formation Bio, an AI-focused drug development startup that just raised a whopping $372 million in Series D funding, led by Andreessen Horowitz. Next, Kirsten broke down the surprising partnership between Volkswagen Group and Rivian and how its initial $1 billion investment could grow up to $5 billion. To wrap up our deals, Mary-Ann highlighted Nubank's acquisition of Hyperplane, an AI-for-banks startup. Moving onto our themes, Haje took us on a deep dive into the fediverse, a decentralized network of social media platforms like Mastodon, Threads, and even Trump's Truth Social. The fediverse has seen a surge in popularity, especially after Elon Musk acquired Twitter (now X). Mastodon, for example, has just about tripled its user base since Musk took over. The appeal lies in its decentralized nature, offering users more control and niche communities. Whether you're a photographer, a journalism enthusiast, or just someone fed up with traditional social media, the fediverse has something for you.Last but not least, we discussed the ongoing debate around DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) in tech in a more controversial segment. Scale AI's founder Alexandr Wang recently sparked a debate by advocating for MEI (Merit, Excellence, Intelligence) over DEI. This has drawn support from big names like Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey but also significant criticism. The stats are troubling: new women recruit levels in the U.S. data industry have dropped dramatically, and DEI-related job listings are down.Equity will be back on Wednesday with a new interview episode, so stay tuned!Equity is TechCrunch's flagship podcast, produced by Theresa Loconsolo, and posts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the casts. It's the last Friday of the month as we pay tribute to a Ford leader who broke the mold. We also talk about a hot debate over legacy OEMs flirting with DTC models as well as consumer luxury purchases going on the rise. This morning we pay tribute to Don Petersen, a transformative leader who guided Ford through a critical phase in the 1980s.Petersen, who passed away at 97 on Wednesday was at his home near Detroit in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., his niece Laura Peterson told Automotive News in an email., was celebrated for prioritizing quality and innovation, dramatically boosting Ford's market share and profitability.Under his leadership, Ford introduced influential designs like the aerodynamic Taurus and Mercury Sable, shifting industry standards towards more customer-focused products. He was known for fostering a collaborative workplace, which contrasted sharply with the autocratic styles of previous Ford executives. But at times was also said to have had some passionate outbursts. Petersen also spearheaded strategic acquisitions, notably purchasing a controlling stake in Hertz and increasing Ford's investment in Mazda, which significantly expanded Ford's global footprint and technological capabilities."He insisted on teamwork and excellence in the name of customers and guided Ford through a period of revitalization," stated Ford Motor Co.A recent Automotive News editorial is highliging a hot topic we'll be discussing with the President's of NADA and several State ATA's on the main stage at ASOTU CON. Dealer associations are lobbying against direct sales models for new brands like VW Group's Scout and Honda's Afeela, pushing for adherence to traditional franchise systems amidst a slowdown in EV market growth.Tensions rise as dealers threaten to withhold service and parts for brands pursuing direct sales, fearing the impacts on their business model and the established relationships with legacy automakers. The advertisement by state dealer associations in Automotive News underscores a significant industry rift, as they urge legacy automakers to reconsider direct sales strategies that could bypass traditional dealerships."We believe there is a difference between a brand recently born and one seeded, nourished and grown under the protective arm of a legacy automaker," emphasizes the importance of maintaining traditional retail models for established brands.Despite economic inflation, the U.S. luxury goods market has seen a substantial 86% increase in purchase intent from 2021 to 2024, according to YouGov's latest survey. The survey reveals that 26% of respondents are likely to buy luxury items within the next year, a significant rise from 14% three years prior.Notably, 15% of Americans have actually purchased luxury goods over the past year, marking a 9% increase since 2021, with shoes, accessories, and beauty products leading the purchase categories.Shoppers between 35-44 were willing to shell out over $1,000 on their coveted purchases.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Lei headed over to Germany for Porsche's Annual Press Conference so much of the podcast was dedicated to what Lei learned about during his visit and led to a broader discussion about Volkswagen Group and what Tu thought about VW Group's annual press conference and how important Porsche is to Volkswagen Group's global goals. After a detailed discussion on Germany's largest automaker and one of its most important brands, the discussion moved over to NIO and their reaching 40M swaps. Tu and Lei also talked a bit about NIO's mass market brand Onvo and how it'll be positioned alongside the NIO premium brand and the yet to be launched Firefly brand. The podcast ends with a discussion on not counting VW Group out just yet, although the mountain they need to climb to get back into the driver's seat in China seems insurmountable at this time. Tu also briefly discusses some of the initial quality challenges some BYD vehicles are having in the export markets, but doesn't see anything out of the ordinary or that shoud be cause for alarm just yet. BYD is new to those markets and their products will react to each of the climates differently but it's a learning process that should help them strenghthen the future quality and reliability of their global portfolio.

Today, we are all in the EV space chatting about broadening lineups for Hyundai, VW, and Jaguar.Hyundai is gearing up to expand its electric vehicle lineup with the IONIQ 9, a first-of-its-kind three-row electric SUV from the automaker. The IONIQ 9, Hyundai's first three-row electric SUV, follows the success of the IONIQ 5 and 6, with the IONIQ 5 ranking as the sixth top-selling EV in the US last year.Utilizing Hyundai's E-GMP platform, the IONIQ 9 promises exceptional space and performance, possibly offering more rear legroom than luxury competitors like the Cadillac Escalade.Set to start production in the first half of the year, with US sales expected in mid-2025, the IONIQ 9 will be manufactured at Hyundai's new EV Metaplant in Georgia, aiming to qualify for the $7,500 EV tax credit. The brand is expected to unveil the model in June.Volkswagen, once embroiled in the Dieselgate scandal, is now at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution, embarking on its most ambitious product launch to date on its way to a 100% EV future.VW's transformation into an EV powerhouse is marked by the announcement of over 30 new models across its brands, aiming for a record year in 2024."We will invest in our last-generation of ICE vehicles,” which are especially key for hybrids, board member and CFO Arno Antlitz said. Then, he said, “These investments are going to be phased out.”In 2023, the VW Group saw deliveries rise 10% globally with an operating profit of €22.6 billion (about $25 billion.)Jaguar is embracing an all-electric future with plans to exclusively produce electric vehicles by 2025, including luxury SUVs. This bold transition marks the end of the line for its internal combustion engine (ICE) models as Jaguar seeks a fresh start with a trio of new electric vehicles on a brand-new platform.Jaguar will discontinue all current ICE and EV models, including the I-Pace, by 2024 and 3 new electric vehicles, including SUVs, will replace the existing lineup, signaling a major shift towards sustainability and innovation. The introduction of a 600 bhp electric four-seat GT car, comparable to the Porsche Taycan, will kickstart Jaguar's new era, with indicative pricing around $127,000 and a range nearing 400 miles on U.S. EPA methods."The most powerful and impressive Jaguar ever produced" signals the brand's aim to compete in the high-performance electric sedan market against rivals like the Audi e-tron GT.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

GOVERNMENT U-TURN ON TAX OF DOUBLE-CABSIn a crazy few days, the UK Government went from declaring that double-cab pickup's tax category was going to change to that of a car, but still be classed as a light commercial vehicle (LCV) from 1 July 2024, to u-turning and saying no they wouldn't. This came around due to a court case where it was ruled that they have a dual purpose of carrying people and cargo, therefore cannot be classed as “primarily” transporting cargo. The reaction from the public was loud and angry. The blanket move, with what appeared to be very little thought on the use of these vehicles and who these changes would hit, was decried not just by management consultants, architects and dentists who would have to change their vehicle as the tax loophole closed, but by those who genuinely need a multipurpose vehicle. Lei starts this pod out with a brief history lesson about Vitesco which was spun off from Continental's powertrain business that had some roots at Siemens.Lei pivots to talking in detail about his time behind the wheel of the new-ish XPeng G6 including letting the City NGP function take over for parts of his journey. Tu then points out that as the price war has heated up, more and more complaints have arisen from customers who are purchasing these EVs. Tu takes a moment to differentiate between fails vs. (too) complicated design and how the latter can still be categorized as a fail. Lei moves on to a discussion about Xinzhou Wu, XPeng's head of Autonomous, leaving XPeng to join Nvidia in the US. Lei outlined the numerous reasons this could be and they all could've contributed to his leaving XPeng. The pod then shifts over to a discussion of Pony and Toyota co-investing $140M in autonomous vehicles. Toyota had already made an investment in Pony and this just deepens their partnership with Toyota hoping that Pony can be their ADAS / AV solution for China. Tu and Lei close out the podcast with a discussion of the rumor that Jetta was looking at LeapMotor to advance its EV situation by licensing their EV platform, similar to Audi's partnership with SAIC. If we are keeping score, that's three major deals for the VW Group with a Chinese partner if we include the VW + XPeng investment as well.

Show #1449 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Thursday 28th  April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. VW SAID TO CONSIDER BUILDING ID. BUZZ, ELECTRIC PICKUP IN THE US - Ever since Volkswagen unveiled the ID. Buzz in early March, the automaker constantly had to answer questions regarding the possibility that the electric van will also be made in the United States. - reports claim that Volkswagen is considering an expansion of its Chattanooga plant in Tennessee. A source close to the matter told Reuters that the automaker plans to build an electric pickup and the ID. Buzz at the new facility. - VW has not confirmed plans for an electric pickup yet, although VW Group CEO Herbert Diess and VW of America CEO Scott Keogh have vaguely hinted at such plans. - The report ties in with another one from Germany's Manager Magazin from earlier today. The publication wrote that Volkswagen was planning to build a second production plant in the US that would increase its annual capacity to up to 600,000 vehicles. - VW Group announced on March 21 that it plans to invest at least $7.1 billion in North America over the next five years. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/582632/vw-said-to-consider-building-id-buzz-electric-pickup-us/ VOLKSWAGEN REPORTEDLY CONSIDERING A SECOND US PRODUCTION SITE PLUS NEW BATTERY CELL PLANT - With competitors like Nissan, General Motors, and Ford Motor Co. all manufacturing EVs in the state of Tennessee, it is very quickly becoming a mecca for electrification in the US and could soon be number one, according to the head of the Tennessee Valley Authority. - Current ID.4 production capacity in Chattanooga is expected to be from 100,000 to 120,000 units per year as the automaker adds a third production shift creating about 4,500 jobs. Combined with existing production for VW's Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, the Chattanooga plant would essentially be maxed out. - The report also states that VW is considering a battery plant near the Chattanooga plant(s) as well. - According to VW exec Scott Keogh, the company's current plan is to source its EV battery cells from  SK Innovation at the new $2.6 billion factory it is building in Georgia. In terms of a potential US battery plant, Keogh said VW will need units. Original Source : https://electrek.co/2022/04/29/volkswagen-reportedly-considering-a-second-us-production-site-plus-new-battery-cell-plant/ VOLKSWAGEN & BP LAUNCH PARTNERSHIP TO ROLL-OUT EV FAST CHARGING IN EUROPE - Volkswagen Group and energy giant bp have launched a strategic partnership that will aim to boost the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across Europe, unveiling the first charger in Dusseldorf, Germany. The partnership aims to rapidly building a fast charging network across Europe by 2024. - The roll-out will feature Volkswagen's Flexpole 150kW charging units, each of which feature two charge points, and an integrated battery storage system. - The Flexpole units can be directly connected to a low voltage grid which removes the requirement for a dedicated substation and costly construction work, while providing fast charging speeds of up to 150kW - The first phase of the roll-out will see up to an additional 4,000 charge points at bp's Aral retail sites in Germany and bp retail sites in the UK over the next 24 months. - bp's charging network will be integrated into Volkswagen, ŠKODA and Seat/Cupra in-car dashboards ensuring drivers can find their nearest charger seamlessly. Original Source : https://www.autofutures.tv/2022/04/28/volkswagen-bp-launch-partnership-to-roll-out-ev-fast-charging-in-europe/ USPS HIT BY CAROLYN MALONEY ON LIMITING ELECTRIC VEHICLE PURCHASES - he U.S. Postal Service used “faulty” assumptions in limiting its purchase of electric mail-delivery trucks in its $6 billion fleet replacement plan, a top House Democrat said Tuesday. - The postal service used a low gas price and assumed higher maintenance costs for an electric vehicle than for gas-powered, said Representative Carolyn Maloney, a New York Democrat who is pushing for the service to buy more battery-powered vehicles. - The service last month said it had doubled, to about 10,000, the number of electric vehicles in its initial order. The trucks will be among 50,000 Next Generation Delivery Vehicles from Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Corp. - Maloney referred to a Government Accountability Office report released Tuesday. The congressional watchdog said the postal service used a gas price that is almost $2 per gallon less than the current national average price of gas. - The Postal Service is moving forward over objections of the Biden administration with its $6 billion plan to purchase as many as 165,000 mail trucks over the next 10 years, with up to 90% of those running on gasoline instead of more climate-friendly batteries. Show #1405 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of information. It's Tuesday 15th March, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. TESLA RAISES PRICES FOR SECOND TIME IN DAYS ON RISING COSTS - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) raised its prices in China and the United States for the second time in less than a week, after CEO Elon Musk said the U.S. electric carmaker was facing significant inflationary pressure in raw materials and logistics. - The increases come as costs of raw materials are surging, exacerbated by supply chain disruptions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. - Tesla, which has a diversified supply chain, has bought "millions of euros worth of aluminum" from Russian aluminium giant Rusal, CNBC reported on Monday, citing internal documents. Rusal's billionaire founder Oleg Deripaska has been sanctioned by Britain. Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-raises-prices-some-china-made-vehicles-2022-03-15/ TESLA PRICES RISE AGAIN: AT $48,190, BASE MODEL 3 NOW COSTS A THIRD MORE VS. A YEAR AGO - The Tesla Model 3 was launched with the promise of a $35,000 base price, but now the base Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive starts at $48,190. That's an increase of $2,000 from its most recent (higher) price, and nearly a third higher than this time last year, when you could get a Model 3 Standard Range Plus for $37,190. - Tesla's other Model 3 variants saw price increases as well. The Model 3 Long Range now starts at $54,490 (up $2,500) and the Model 3 Performance starts at $61,990 (up $3,000). - The base price of the entry-level Model Y Long Range increased $3,000 to $62,990. So the most affordable Model Y now costs about $23,000 more than it did around this time last year. - March 2021 the now-discontinued Model Y Standard Range had cost just $41,190. - The Model Y Performance then was just $62,190. Tesla then increased the base price to $64,990, and it now starts at $67,990. Original Source : https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1135329_tesla-prices-rise-again-base-model-3-costs-a-third-more-vs-a-year-ago TESLA INCREASES PRICES THROUGHOUT WHOLE LINEUP - As for the flagship Model S and Model X, they were not spared in the wave of price increases. The Model S now starts at $99,990 – an extra $5,000 over the previous price - The performance version also received a $5,000 price increase. Model X surprisingly escaped many previous waves of price increases from Tesla, but not this time. The electric SUV is seeing a price increase of $10,000 to now start at $114,990: - The Plaid version also saw a big price increase, and now it finally sells for more than the Model S Plaid – the fact that it didn't before made no sense. Original Source : https://electrek.co/2022/03/14/tesla-increases-prices-whole-lineup-cheapest-electric-csr/ INFLATION: TESLA'S AVERAGE TRANSACTION PRICE TOPS ALL BRANDS IN 2022 - Tesla's average transaction price increased by 4.1 percent from January 2022 to February 2022. During the same timeframe, many automakers saw a drop, and the industry as a whole saw a decrease of 0.6 percent. - That said, there are certainly other brands that also had a notable increase, such as Acura, Jeep, Mini, and Toyota. At any rate, Tesla's average transaction price rose from $63,263 in January to $65,837 in February. - If we look at the bigger picture, from February 2021 to February 2022, Tesla's average transaction price soared by 14.8 percent. However, the industry average increase year over year is at 11.4 percent. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/573684/tesla-average-transaction-prices-rise-2022-inflation/ VW GROUP CEO PRAISES TESLA'S GIGA TEXAS DURING AUSTIN VISIT - Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess is an outspoken admirer of Tesla and its boss Elon Musk, praising the EV maker for its achievements and innovation on several occasions. - While the German executive's "bromance" with the US billionaire entrepreneur has annoyed some members of VW Group's board, especially works council boss Daniela Cavallo, Diess has made it clear that Tesla cannot be ignored. In November 2021, he gave this reply to those who criticised him for comparing VW with Tesla, as per a Reuters report.  "Even if I no longer talk about Elon Musk: he'll still be there and revolutionises our industry and keeps getting more competitive quickly." - the CEO praised Tesla's Giga Texas plant during his visit to Austin for the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival this past weekend, where the VW ID. Buzz has made its first public appearance. - "Elon's new factory - he calls it 'the machine that produces the machine' is impressive: 1.2 km long, 400m wide: all under one roof, no logistics from cell production to the final assembly. Once up and running it will very likely set some new benchmarks." - "I am so happy that we decided a new plant for Wolfsburg. Without that - no chance to compete." - Set to open in 2026, Volkswagen's new state-of-the-art facility will have an annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles. The first model to be built there will be the Project Trinity electric saloon. The up-and-coming flagship model was first announced in 2021, which will spearhead the next generation of zero-emission VW cars. - The new factory will be built near VW's main plant in Wolfsburg. - VW said investment totals to around €2 billion or around $2.2 billion with the current exchange rates. - Construction for the new Wolfburg plant for the Trinity is set to begin as early as spring 2023. According to the report, VW Group CEO Herbert Diess even wanted to get out of Lower Saxony altogether to produce the flagship Trinity project, or at least “outside the brick walls” of the existing Wolfsburg main plant. With his taunts, Diess not only angered the works council but also started a power struggle within the Board. In the end, Diess will now get his plant outside the current plant boundaries, but VW brand chief Ralf Brandstätter, who will soon move to Beijing, is considered the architect behind this solution - Throughout the 2030s, the main plant could then be converted entirely – and Wolfsburg could build up to 750,000 electric cars per year. The car will be aimed at the mass market and targets a range of over 700 km (435 miles). It will be technically ready for Level 4 autonomous driving and will debut VW Group's SSP electric "super platform" that will replace combustion-engine and full-electric platforms used by brands including VW, Skoda, Seat, Audi and Porsche. - VW aims for a production time of 10 hours per vehicle for the Trinity model, similar to how long it will take Tesla to build cars at its new factory in Gruenheide near Berlin. It still needs to obtain an operating licence before production can officially begin, which should take roughly two weeks, a spokesperson for the local government told Insider. - Officials said they expect the plant to begin producing cars this month. Over time, Tesla intends to scale production to 500,000 vehicles per year and employ 12,000 workers at the plant. In 2021, Tesla produced just over 900,000 vehicles between its two facilities in Fremont, California and Shanghai, China. The document reportedly has 536 pages and contains a long list of requirements the company has to fulfill. Once it does, the final operating license will be issued. Of course, this was good news. Tesla announced they would get it done within two weeks. This would have meant they could have started producing those ‘Berlin Model Ys' at the end of this month. Some 2,000 vehicles were already made during test runs. - late on Friday night, The Administrative Court in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany's smaller Frankfurt located at the Polish border, found a procedural error which has implications. When Brandenburg's Environment Agency issued a permit for the delivery of millions of tons of additional water for the factory, it forgot to involve the public which had the right to comment on the decision. This process will have to be made up for. Obviously, both the inhabitants in the area and Tesla need water. The factory will use 1.4 million cubic meters (50 million cubic feet) of it per year. - For now, Brandenburg has the option to suspend the implementation of the court decision until the matter is resolved. That way, a long delay could be prevented, at least in part. It gave the XC40 Recharge a subtle mid-cycle update that brings a new-look front end, among other changes, and it unveiled an entry-level version of the C40 Recharge with one electric motor. - the lower part of the front bumper is more chiseled, the Thor's Hammer accents in the headlights are more, well, hammer-like, and the body-colored insert that replaces the gasoline-burning model's grille loses its frame. These changes bring the battery-powered crossover in line with the C40 Recharge - XC40 Recharge models also gain pixel LED lighting technology. This system relies on individually-controlled LED elements to illuminate the road ahead without blinding other motorists - Moving on to the C40 Recharge, a front-wheel-drive version with a single electric motor is now available in some markets as a cheaper alternative to the dual-motor all-wheel-drive model. It's fitted with a 69-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, and it offers a maximum driving range of about 270 miles - the existing dual-motor C40 Recharge is equipped with a 78-kilowatt-hour battery and its powertrain is rated at 402 horsepower Original Source : https://www.autoblog.com/2022/03/04/volvo-xc40-recharge-design-updates-c40-single-motor/?ncid=edlinkusauto00000015 NIO ET7 TEST DRIVES OFFICIALLY BEGIN, FIRST DELIVERIES EXPECTED ON MARCH 28 Original Source : https://cnevpost.com/2022/03/05/nio-et7-test-drives-officially-begin-first-deliveries-expected-on-march-28 THE NIO ET7 HAS 621 MILES OF RANGE AND ALL THE BATTERY Original Source : https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/nio-et7-has-621-miles-range-and-all-battery PEUGEOT E-208 AND E-2008 CHOSEN AS THE FIRST EVS TO JOIN THE AA DRIVING SCHOOL'S FLEET Original Source : https://electriccarsreport.com/2022/03/peugeot-e-208-and-e-2008-chosen-as-the-first-evs-to-join-the-aa-driving-schools-fleet/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What's the best looking EV on the market right now?
