How does your zip code affect your life expectancy? The impacts of climate change, toxic water, and dirty air aren’t evenly distributed. Low income and communities of color bear the brunt of these impacts. Today, we dive into conversation with Peggy Shepard, a pioneer of the environmental justice movement who has worked for more than three decades to shine a light on the ways damage to the natural world intersects with issues of race and class. She co-founded WE ACT for Environmental Justice, a community organization based in New York City with the mission of ensuring that the right to clean air, water, and soil extends to all people, no matter where they live, what color their skin is, or how much money is in their bank accounts. Many of the environmental protections she helped to fight for in her community have been scaled up to the national level, benefitting people around the country and even the world. Feb. 4, 2015. Highlights of the collection of Rosa Parks, a seminal figure of the Civil Rights Movement, on loan to the Library from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation for 10 years. Howard Buffett decided to purchase this special collection in 2014, when he learned that it was languishing in an auction warehouse. He wanted to bring these rare items into public view and ensure their preservation. The Rosa Parks Collection reveals how deeply she believed in a moral imperative to oppose discrimination and the denial of individual rights. That belief most famously resulted in her decision to challenge the bus segregation laws in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955. But her autobiographical writings reveal numerous times in her life when that conviction motivated her to act. The collection documents many aspects of her private life as well as her public work on behalf of civil rights for African Americans. While the 7,500 manuscripts and 2,500 photographs span 140 years, the content focuses on the 1950s through the 1990s and includes Mrs. Parks' own writings, letters from presidents, her Congressional Gold Medal and Presidential Medal of Freedom, and hand-drawn cards of appreciation from scores of schoolchildren. This video contains highlights from the collection and a look behind the scenes at how the Library's team of experts in cataloging, preservation, digitization, exhibition and teacher training are making the legacy of Rosa Parks available to the world. On the opening weekend of the Newseum’s newest exhibit “40 Chances: Finding Hope in a Hungry World – The Photography of Howard G. Buffett,” Emmy award-winning journalist Ann Curry moderates a panel of photo and video journalists who discuss how their work brings a sharpened focus on critical development issues.
In 2006, Warren Buffett told his son that he was leaving the bulk of his fortune to making a difference in the world. That’s when he gave his son Howard G. Buffett a billion dollars and told him to go fix the hard problems. As a professional farmer, Howard G. decided to go out and fix hunger. Over time, he has realized that you can’t fix hunger without dealing with conflict, with property rights and just about every other aspect of society. In his book 40 Chances (co-written with his own son Howard W. Buffett) he tells the story of how the average farmer only gets 40 Chances to plant a crop between the first time he climbs on a tractor and the last time he climbs off it. A farmer has to make the most of those 40 Chances. Rather than ploughing cash into the same projects that have always gotten cash, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation has chosen to adopt an experimental approach to development that looks above all for self-sustaining solutions that keep themselves going long after all the aid workers have left. 40 Chances is available on Amazon. You can follow the book on twitter @40Chances.
The Howard G. Buffett Foundation is looking to Morehouse for help in developing a new breed of leadership for the region. Eventually, the future Morehouse Men are expected to help lead the region forward.
Three generations of philanthropists sit down to discuss business, charity, farming, and their 40 Chances in life, moderated by Tom Brokaw. If you had the resources to accomplish something great in the world, what would you do? That's the question legendary investor Warren Buffett posed to his son in 2006, when he announced he was leaving the bulk of his fortune to philanthropy. Howard G. Buffett set out to help the most vulnerable people on earth—nearly a billion individuals who lack basic food security. And Howard has given himself a deadline: 40 years to put more than $3 billion to work on this challenge. 40 Chances: Finding Hope in a Hungry World captures Howard's journey to make a difference in the world, and the lessons learned along the way. Warren joins his son and grandson, Howard W. Buffett, to celebrate the accomplishments so far, and embrace the new challenges ahead.
